I’ve started using empty 2L bottles, I cut off the top and bottom, and the glue strip (where the label is attached). Then I cut the middle section in half so I end up with 2 pieces of approximately 6” wide and 6.5” tall. I stack these along the back of a moss pole using Velcro tape and overlap the plastic just a bit. One plastic bottle gives me a 6” x 12” backing. It really helps keep my poles moist and keeps plastic out of the landfill.
This was an ambitious project. Thanks for sharing your thought process and the amazing results. Looks like it should be an amazing story. Looking forward to progress videos.
Love your poles so much I've now got 50 yes 50 of my plants on poles in Hope's of getting the mature leaves you have, I've only gotten one that has been extended so far but they are all doing well, thanks so much for this channel I'm a huge fan. I’m always drooling over your plants! Thank you for this video, that was such a genius idea that I’m going to do the same with all my traditional moss poles. On newer plants, I’m already using the D-shaped poles, reduces the need to water so often. I sooo wish you would sell your bottom plants, would kill to get my hands on one!
I made a similar aroid mix like you and reported my peace Lilly, syngonium and caladium. All three started drooping. Lilly is doing a little better but other two have gone to plant heaven
Jan congratulations on this beautiful plant’s post surgery outcome. Thank you for taking us on this unknown journey. You and Craig Miller Randle are fabulous innovators and plant doctors. Human Doctors have so much book learning, simulations and dummies and cadavers…..and are super sure before they touch a body with a beating heart….and still they make mistakes. Jan you worked through the problem and goal, the surgery chaos (do you have Secateurs ?) and winged it beautifully well done!
Last year i fell in love with your adensonii and im glad i made my moss pole fatter than yours and its about a year since i have made the tiny cut it only had 1 leaf, so now its a foot and a half with some good sized leavs almost as big as my biggest from when i had it hanging but that took 12 feet of hanging to get big leavs, so now im excited to see how big itl get this next year.
Hi Jan and Brad💚 Thank you for showing the process of changing over to the other type of moss pole (even if it was bit chaotic lol) I do believe the way of growing mature leaves have certainly got to other plant tubers have seen a lot changing over to your way of thinking. ( must be instagram 😉)
Hello Jan. Thank you for your wonderful videos. I live in an area of the U.S. that has cold winters, so I move all my tropicals indoors. Yes, my home looks like a jungle in winter. I'm inspired by you to create some moss poles and repot some of my plants before moving them inside this year. I just ordered all the needed materials and plan to do this this week. I'm wondering if this experience has made you consider going with a larger diameter on your moss poles. Thanks again. Your videos are very helpful and I appreciate that they aren't too technical. Love your creative approach.
Hi: Enjoyed this video very much...a quick question..how do you keep the leaves looking so healthy and green? You mentioned that the larger ones can't be put in the bathtub, and spraying would seem difficult with your carpets....wiping them is the option of course, but that's a lot of time spent with so large a collection...it's very obvious where your love lies...congrats on a wonderful, helpful series...can't wait for the next one!
@@sydneyplantguy Sorry...I forgot you have that nice terrace you can use...the plants must love a good bath now and then...with our winter chilly weather here in Tuscany, putting out greenery outside for a clean up isn't possible...so we use a ground-floor bathroom shower..works like magic....hauling them around is a chore, but they are so much better off, and seem to grow a lot healthier. We don't have the taller moss pole aroids, but many smaller peace lilies, ferns, and other tropicals....all in a day's work. Again, many thanks for informative, fun videos.
Thank you so much for your content!!! I’m just starting my “go big” journey and am curious why a larger diameter pole with an equal increase in moss (compared to the plastic backing) for the roots to grow into wouldnt result in larger leaves. My inexperienced logic reasons that if the sphagnum moss was doubled or tripled in volume via increased diameter, that would also support an increase in leaf size. Wondering what your thoughts are. Thanks in advance for your gracious sharing of knowledge!!!
Thank you for you amazing tutorial! I bought monstera albo with 1 small (5 cm) leaf. Just curious how many years will it take for my monstera to grow at least a third of your monstera dubya? 😅
Great work! Did you consider doing a larger diameter of your normal moss poles? Interested to hear your thoughts on whether this would or wouldn't be feasible
Awesome vid. Question - I'm 3 months in to my first moss poles and some of my plants aren't rooting into the poles as well as others. Have you tried watering your poles with clonex when this happens? Does it help? (I think the real reason is I stuffed those poles too tight, but I'd like to remedy this in the extension pole)
Hello Jan, I really do enjoy your videos and find them very informative, as a matter of fact some of my plant purchases were based on info you provided, so thank you! I would like to know which plant that is to your right with the variegated leaves please??
Jan, the next time you cut your laniata, won't it be a problem if the steak is inside the d-shaped moss pole? you have to lay it horizontally to get the top part off.
Another killer video Jan! Unrelated question but pls HELP... I just bought a Verrucosum cutting that has 2 nodes rooted into it's moss pole. The leaf is beautiful but has been getting more and more droopy for the 3 days I've had it. It's going to start browing or die if I don't help it soon! It's got medium / bright indirect light, a moist pole, 70% humidity, 22ish degrees, and the base is planted in MAB. The only thing I can think of to help it is to plant the base in moss with some Growth Tech rooting hormone. Maybe the base which has no roots and is too dry. The plant looks de-hydrated to me. Maybe I should air layer the nodes for now as well? Any tips appreciated!
Wouldn’t the bottom plant grow larger leaves faster? I would think the top cutting would go through the process of shedding all of the buried leaves and then growing a new underground root system, stunting its growth and I would think the bottom cutting being re-potted with fresh soil and a new pole would grow larger foliage faster since it already had an established root system and large leaves. I’d love to correct my thinking if it’s wrong so can someone help explain please?
The bottom leaves are older and are already deteriorating, while they will re-shoot and can produce large leaves again soon, the plant is just not as easthetically pleasing :) of rooted properly, the top half will not shed leaves :)
How do you deal with the moss in the pole breaking down and acidifying? Do you have to fully replace the moss every year? With orchids I know they get very sickly when the moss gets acidic and I was curious if it is the same for these aroids.
Hi Jan, are all philodendron plants climbing? I'd like to give them a go at climbing but unsure if the ones I see at the garden stores are all potentially climbers if given the moss poles. Thanks.
Actually on this note - i really want to try this with a couple of mine while they are smaller and more manageable. But i do not want to import grow verticals to the UK to only use the backing (tho im defo going to buy some for new projects) - does anyone know what the plastic is used ? So i know what sheets to search for ?
Soooo I have a question for Yan or anyone else who may know... I have a monstera that's about 2 years old. Very big and wild and never put on a moss pole. I did use a wood steak that hasn't been much help for the last year maybe but she's a bit unruly. Can I still repot her onto a moss pole? Although the bottom may look a little weird because of the shape of it now but should I leave her or try to change her? She isn't growing as much anymore. And she's currently in a pretty large pot. Any advice?
Ultimately there is no right or wrong ... it really depends on what you want the end result to look like. I personally would take a propagation, root it & then start in fresh on a ole. However, I if we're talking about a deliciosa, I don't think you really need a moss pole for growing purposes, maybe for propagation purposes eventually :)

How do you connect the plastic to the wire. Or is it a whole moss with the plastic as backing?🤷♀️
@@michelejones4282 from what I understand it's a whole mosspole and the bottles get attached "on top" of the mosspole with velcro tape :)

At first I did read the title of the video, I thought it was a monstera deliciosa, so damn, that's a big adansonii !
