Morty fell to betrayal out of unresolved anger towards dad, but he fell to Chaos only to save his legion. He didn’t do so out of desire for power, but because when the pain was too much for him, he knew his sons were dying without death. He is a sad case

I would say he fell to Chaos long before then. Who but someone already corrupted by Chaos (even if he wouldn’t admit it to himself) sacrifices his bodyguards and legion geneseed in a secret ritual to summon a daemon?
The emperor offered him the idea of redemption what this will do to his mindset going forth would be interesting to see
It was really sad when the villagers were celebrating their first victory on Barbarus and he had to ask Typhon what the fuck they were doing because he had no concept of joy

Mortarion is like Perturabo - embodying something he thinks he hates. Perturabo thinks he's a sensitive artist, but he yearns for the trenches. Mortarion thinks he hates the Warp, but was more about superstition and ritual than MAGNUS. It may have been bad circumstances that broke them, but they were broken.
This guy is so similar to Sanguinius in his fall. Angel boy was about to sacrifice himself too but got interupted by his medic child Meros
I do wonder what a successfully cloned Mortarion would be like.
Imo Morty's Primarch Novel was the best of the bunch. Gave you much added depth to the character.

I love mortarion prob my top 2 primarchs I think we have to look at the interaction from the emperor talking to Morty in god blight where he tells him that he will free him / return eventually but not yet …. Either this is just a carrot gesture for giving GW future choices in lore or it is planned.
I think as well mortarion also realised the emperor is also a being of the warp in a fashion so would never be able to truly trust him / it .
add in the way he was denied help with handling the overlord and in essence trolled .perhaps it was planned from the big e as he did like think millennia ahead .
It’s kind of ironic now mortarion is the one thing he despises supposedly much like pertursbo if it becomes cannon he is also a daemon primarch now as well
Wish they would flesh out mortarion relations with his brothers though especially in current setting with Magnus and angron

That's not a rumor. That's a thing the emperor claimed after deus ex machina him away to save Gulliman. And I think that that would be bad for all death guard players and also really dumb. Why would mortarion ever join an Emperor he hates?
There is zero chance. One throwaway line in one novel isn't... anything.

Morty is a wanker who cant decide what he wants and Big E would take a knight off the table and bunch of Nurgle Power.
Morty would have to stop being stubborn and swallow his pride.... not going to happen without the best possible writing in play.
So I'm predicting a redemption arch for morty. Here is my reason why cause it can be expanded upon. So nurgle has that aldari god of healing and life imprisoned as a undying test subject that always has a factory reset which can cure all corruption and papa nurgle isn't happy with morty and that Uncleanone for having some his garden burn during that dark imperium saga and nurgle personally blames the two I can see morty freeing the aldari to cure himself or his legion but the aldari god of healing presents him with a choice him or his legion can be saved... and he chooses the emporer to be saved and the corpse king and the holy emporer himself is back in the grimdark
if the emperor had only given mortarion the means to survive the poisonous atmosphere then mortarion never would have turned traitor😊
He was tricked. Typhus and morty were in the warp going somewhere and the ship got stuck in the warp if I recall. It was a plan by typhus to change morty to follow nurgle. One reason why they don't really like each other. The book this is in is called (the buried dagger.)
Mortarion is the ultimate hypocrite. Doesn’t like psykers, uses psychic powers. Doesn’t like the Warp, signs up when faced with death. He would’ve been the greatest if he had just taken death over eternal servitude to Nurgle
I think it would of been interesting to see a even more haggard Morty fighting off Nurgle attempts to claim him and where he goes, a plague bloom follows since he would have so many little plague minions trying to get him to give him
The Pale King makes me think how we NEED that Horus: The Luna Wolf novella.
Give it to Wraight or ADB, no Warmaster, just who HE is and we'll be rethinking this list (love the series)

Truely the greatest. Really cares for his sons and respect like no other primarch. If you have read pale king and lords of silence you know.
So brave. Sacrifice the entire imperium and make your sons slaves, to stop them, and only them from feeling pain.

I don't care for morty but his case is tragic
Like the series but nothing about what you just described of the Pale King would have me being able to consider him the greatest of the Primarchs.
morty was either the second or third most resilient primarch, not in the top five strategists or tacticians, was not a psyker
his resentment for being saved by big E was deep
but his fall was the result of him being a hypocrite about the warp, he was the most anti psyker ( a lot more the Russ, who I don't think is that anti psyker as some think), but he had no qualms about killing his own honor guard in their own gene seed vault in order to summon a demonic half breed
so no he is not the greatest, by far not

Pah Magnus did nothing. Mortorian became the monster he always feared. Mortarion saved his sons from death. Mortarion's fall like Angron's was not his doing but those closest to him. Mortarion is one of the three traitor primarch I respect out of the 9 only Conrad and Purturobo are worthy of my respect.
