It’s a shame that it’s always overshadowed by the Anjou/Kafei quest line. Both are great, but I always preferred Romani and Cremia as characters over Anjou and Kafei. Though I guess it’s probably mostly just bias from having liked Malon in OOT lol.
@@Keyring7031 The main issue I have with the Kafei/Anju quest and why I feel it's overrated is because Kafei never really sees you as an equal as you're helping him. In his mind, he's the adult/man with the plan and your just a helper set by Anju to help him unite with her. He never acknowledges or appreciates that you are selflessly helping him during the world's final moments and never even directly says "thank you" to Link at any point. Romani and Cremia both show their gratitude for your deeds in adorable ways which always makes me want to perform their side quests in every 3 day cycle I play.

She was going to ask Link to come next year to the Carnival to help but then came to the idea of boarding Link as her bodyguard and practice archery until the next alien attack.
It crushes my heart if you do everything at the ranch and stay with the sisters at the third day, because Cremia gives Romani the milk and tells her shes an adult now
I think that was more of an excuse for Romani to not ask questions as to why is her sister giving her the Chateau Romani, It doesn't matter if they die anyway, Cremia just wanted Romani to not know what was about to happen until the end. (In case you didn't know, the Chateau Romani is implied to have alcoholic properties)
A Popular Theory of Majora's Mask: The Grief Theory states that each area in the game reflects one of the five stages of grief (Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance) though it's not in the usual order, you do see the sisters go through all 5 stages through their dialouge and the characters around them.
Also if you talk to them on their way to the house Cremia asks her to sleep together that night. The supposed alcohol might help but I think it's all about doing what she was always telling her to wait and bonding as sisters knowing there is no tomorrow. It has a further meaning for her because it's not simply a random kid that wants to drink say beer, they are the owners of a traditional business and she'd be the next generation.
I always have tears whenever I think of Cremia’s character. Her parents passed away and she’s forced to take care of her sister & the ranch all by herself at a relatively young age. At Cremia’s age, maybe she had dreams & wanted to do more outside of the ranch, but now she can’t bc it’s become her responsibility and she won’t leave her sister behind. Not only that, but imagine knowing that the world is ending in 3 days and you want to tell the one person you love that you love him, but you can’t bc you know he’s getting married to your close friend on that same day. Not to mention, that close friend’s family is blaming you for Kafei’s disappearance, when in reality, you had nothing to do with it at all. And now, that close friend even questions her friendship with you, bc she considers that maybe you rlly did run off with her fiance. And deep down, you know it’s nobody’s fault. Its just how things turned out to be. That’s why on the 3rd day, you see Cremia saying “I guess that’s how life goes. There are some things you can’t change, no matter how hard you try.” I honestly just wanna give the poor girl a big hug and cry with her. She’s so strong and she doesn’t deserve any of this.
And it makes even more sad that on the final day Cremia let's Romani have Chateau Romani milk (Which milk is a euphemism for alcohol in the game. You can see Gorman getting wasted at Latte every night) and asks her to sleep with her. So she gets her little sister drunk and comforts her so she won't know or feel when the moon comes crashing down.
Is Kafei exclusive to this game? Cuz I thought one of the big undermining trivia about this game is that those around Link are people based on those he has met in OOT and unless I’m missing something, I don’t think I recall Link ever meeting any potential original counterpart.
I Wish he stayed there instead of going back to Hyrule where he was a nameless child that bacame (possibly) a knight... I mean, Twilight Princess' Link could do without him
"Actually... I know... We're not safe here, either... That's how life goes, I guess. There are some things in life that you can't change no matter how hard you try." - Cremia I think she's also referring to her feelings towards Kafei & his marriage. One of the sadder parts of the game because even when the new day dawns, she still has to live with it.

I have played this game for many MANY years, how have I never seen this conversation!?! It blows my mind that Cremia actually liked Kafei, I thought Anju's mom was just spreading rumors.
@@TheodoricEichen She mentions it during a conversation on the second night. You can only hear this conversation if you're in the Stock Pot Inn's reserved room and you don't tell Anju to wait for Kafei. Back in 05' I didn't have internet, was home alone for a week, and didn't know anybody in town yet. Yeah, I booted up this old game and spoke to everyone with every mask.
I always thought it was ridiculous that Anju's mother was accusing Creamia and Kafei actually being together and just thought it was a Mother assuming the worse in a man and just jumping to the person closest to both people. It really adds so much depth seeing this now so many years later that there actually is SOME founded basis on her accusation. I also always thought Romani was a little smitten over Link but I think her wanting him to live there with them is just her childish attempt of "I like you and really wanna be with you" and it's super cute. Granted it could legimately be just wanting him there to help the cows for next year but given how eager she is about it I'm more aimed at she's childishly smitten.
to be honest its kinda fitting considering the events of Ocarina of Time. It's really wild how some things are different but stay the same in some ways in Termina from Hyrule. From Young Link making a bond with Epona with some girl teaching him a song after helping her wake up her lazy family member, to a girl who looks the exact same getting saved by Link from aliens, and also getting attached to him.
There is a base to the accusation, but it ends up falling flat since Kafei only talks about Anju in the sidequests involved with him. Cremia’s feelings towards Kafei are unreciprocated, since he can only think about his marriage to Anju and getting the Sun Mask back from Sakon in time. Plus there is a conversation where Cremia talks about “her friend getting married” on the day of the carnival. She has feelings for Kafei, but Cremia also values her friendship with Anju more.
@@Kruegernator123 Picture this: Cremia tried one last time to convince Kafei to love her instead of Anju, and did the "prize" thing she did with link. Anju's mother saw that and thought it was consensual, but right after she went away, Kafei stops Cremia and tells her that he only thinks about Anju, apologizes for not having the same feelings for her then they part ways. Maybe right after that Cremia felt alone, Skull Kid saw that and felt empathy for her, since his a loner too, he's been abandoned before, so he cursed Kafei so that he would never be able to marry. I Think this is my new Headcanon now
This is just one of the main reasons why as a kid I absolutely adored Majora's Mask. It was never like other Zelda games or even other games in general. The people there had such personality and the entire game was built around learning everything about each character in the game. It was a very groundhog day game. You follow people around each day and see what they're doing and where they go. You learn about indivuals and spend time helping each one out and you slowly learn that every single character essentially had a story to tell and you got to see how each of the town folk interacted with each other and helped each other out. I really cant think of another game like it. The people really actually felt alive. You got to see their fears, their regrets, their passions and you helped ease their pain when they were hurt and tried to do things right. It was one of the few games where side quests felt a lot more rewarding because usually it was another piece that helped you along the way or you got to know more lore and stories about Clock Town itself.
@@BlaxeFrost-X I always just called her Malon while playing MM. She will always be Malon to me... but yeah MM has a lot of cool dialogue and character building
That and Cremia's reaction, standing in the barn with the roof blown off, worrying about her sister, the cows, and the ranch. It was really depressing.
I remember discovering this in the game too wondering what the Kafie mask would do! Great find! You need to see the hidden conversation with Cremia! To accomplish this, help out both sisters and at the end of the final day before they go to bed and Cremia is outside with the cow talk to her. She’ll let you know that she knows they won’t make it, and because she knows this; she’s willing to consider Romani as an adult there by allowing her to drink Romani’s Milk. This means that before they die, they’ll be fast asleep next to each other and won’t feel any pain. That’s why she’s asks her to sleep next to her thst night as a means of protecting her.
@@MrVampirePirate There's tons of unique dialogue. Like if you wear the Bremen mask, the people in the bomb shop compliment it and say you're ready for the carnival.

the part where she says her sister is in love with someone made me think about Kafei a bit. Many townspeople claim that he was cheating on Anju before he got engaged, and the saddest part is that Cremia says Anji is his best friend. @@Drew_150 this game is very realistic. I played it when I was a kid and I didn't know what attracted me so much, but when I grew up I started to reflect too much on the stories of the game, the theory of this game being based on grief may not be true as the directors said, but the game does an analogy to grief and loss in any form and in any NPC story
What if Kafei actually did like them both and flirted with the idea of running away with Cremia but when he was cursed and lost everything he realized he would give ANYTHING to have Anju back?
I've never seen any game that can be compared the realistic characters with Zelda MM. Yep. Thankfully it never happened. Cremia values her friendship with Anju more than her feelings for Kafei, and Kafei cannot think about anything else besides the marriage to his fiancée, Anju.
Maybe it happened. Someone else has pointed out that Kafei and Cremia rhymes with Coffee and Cream. Just imagine a nice hot cup of coffee with lots of cream mixed in ;)
@@andredelacerdasantos4439 Holy fucking shit. Though, even more disgustingly, in the Majora’s Mask demo, it’s apparently revealed that Madame Aroma is Cremia’s Aunt, which would make Cremia and Kafei cousins. This didn’t make it through to the final version, but. EUGH.
Cream is much thicker than angels, that's for sure ;) And I see no problem with getting the hots for your cousin, people marry their cousins all the time (too bad for their kids, though)
I think Link's crush-like relationship with Romani and Cremia is just a reflection of his relationship with Malon in OoT. In Termina, the alternate versions of Malon seem to meet a particularly cruel fate, IF Link doesn't step in to save them. When you save Romani she offers you her bed, when you help Cremia she boob smothers Link with a hug. The game is quite blatant about the feelings Link has towards girls who (literally) have the same face as Malon. Even without the Hyrule historia confirming things, when looking at TP Link's house, job, and horse - it is clear he has a connection to both Link and Malon. This creates a really cool dynamic varying over 3 games, Ocarina, Majora, and Twilight Princess. There's a really interesting relationship waiting to be discovered if you dig beneath the surface.
This conversation adds much needed context to a conversation between Anju and her mother in which it's suggested that he went to Romani ranch to be with Cremia. Of course we know he didn't, but it comes out of nowhere unless there's a conversation to suggest that Cremia likes him.
Dang. Link, the hero with no family left to speak of, being offered a family in a land he knows he can't stay, by a girl that admires him so much, but he knows it's possible he will never see any of them again once he goes back to Hyrule...

This whole interaction is so heartbreaking and sweet and sad... I think what got me was when Romani said that she'll be an adult "someday", knowing full well the world is going to end. And then her asking Link to live on the ranch with them and calling him Grasshopper is so precious I just- This is why Majora's Mask is my favorite Zelda game. It's so hopelessly melancholic but also healing in its own way. ❤️
I wonder if she wants Link to stay with them on the off-chance that the ranch is far enough from the point of impact to not kill them; wanting Link to live. After all, Anju and her family are off to the ranch to hopefully not die. Tho, I think they mention some doubt of it being far enough.
@@Schwarzorn Or maybe she just feels less scared if he's around, with him as her protector. She probably hopes for him to be there with her when the moon comes closer and closer and fate becomes uncertain.
The English screen text writing in Zelda was atrocious before MM. I love OoT, but looking back at its dialogue makes me remember how boring it is. The lines in Link's Awakening are especially a travesty. Daniel Owsen really wasn't very good at portraying the emotion in the text. Jason Leung, on the other hand, did an incredible job doing just that in MM.
@@Sephiroth08150 Majora's mask was made in a little over a year as well, it had a shorter development time than Ocarina, which explains the reused assets and game engine.

'Cream' (Cremia) and 'coffee' (Kafei), enough said. The dialogue is triggered when you put on Kafei's mask. The proof is in the pudding as they say. Even twenty years on, I am amazed of all the little bits of knowledge that are still out there.
There needs to be more games where there's no music playing during text dialogue except for ambience and sometimes the characters grunting or something. Extremely immersifying
I disagree, as I actually think the remake does a good job at playing up the weirdness, bizarreness and colourfulness of termina’s world. Plus it actually adds details to parts of the town such as posters which make the world feel more alive imo.
What makes this scene extra sad is that, if you come back to the ranch during the final hours of day 3, there is a dialogue where Cremia gives Romani a sip of Château Romani. She says something to the effect of Romani is 'old enough' now.
where'd you get "she doesn't recognise kafei's mask" from she clearly does recognise it; she gets annoyed due to it because so many people have asked her about kafei due to anju's mother thinking kafei ran off to have an affair with her. this isn't even mentioning the fact they're childhood friends.
She did say, "I recognize you as an adult" then gave him a permit to access the milk bar which clearly sells fermented milk. That's probably the first step of pursuing him now that her previous love interest is marrying Anju. What's not to like? A capable guy who can defend the farm, look after her sister, and has a bank account of over 5000 rupees. The only odd thing about it is that cow's milk doesn't have enough sugars to make a good alcoholic drink which is why people either use horse milk or add sugars when using cow's milk. They must do something with their milk that makes it special enough to properly ferment. Considering that you can't get that kind of milk yourself proves they do something to it. Maybe it really is watered down as rumors have it, but with a water treated with boiled honey then mixed with yeast, then mixed into the milk.
@@bartzbuddy Not in the child timeline, where Link is sent back in time by Zelda to prevent the events of the game basically warning Zelda about Ganondorf's plan when they first meet. Link remembers the averted timeline but nobody else, and because Zelda never sent him after the other two spiritual stones in that timeline, he either never met her there or saved her probably asking for nothing in return, so no engagement ritual took place. And Majora's Mask kicks off the child timeline divergence, followed by Twilight Princess a generation or so later. Ganondorf is caught and unsuccessfully executed, then banished to the Twilight Realm because of Link's warning. Then Link eventually dies, with regrets that made him a restless spirit, the Hero's Shade that teaches TP Link the hidden skills. It's likely that the grown up version of child timeline Link, before he died, joined Hyrule's armed forces, likely as a knight or royal guard, which is where he grew his already impressive swordsman skills - likely also explaining where he obtained the hidden skills he posthumously teaches to TP Link.
This is why I find Majoras Mask to be the best zelda game, even when you thought you knew all there was. Who knows how many private conversations I've missed
Do you think that there were people on the development team who had to take on the role of writing dialogue for specific characters? Like one person gets Cremia and Romani, another gets the mayor, etc. Like, the attention to detail in this game is incredible so there's no way only a few people could've written every little thing in the game!
I wonder how they make the dialogs maintain consistency, with so many of them scattered throughout the game. Maybe they made a dialoge tree in a board so they could see all of them at once?
@@y_s4021 I don't know for this game, but usually there are main writers who write the main dialogues + a "bible" containing all the lore so that other writers can write side content that follow the bible's rules so that it stays coherent with everything else
Yoshiaki Koizumi was one of the directors and writers of this game, he also had the same job positions with Super Mario Galaxy. He also wrote the story for Link's Awakening. The man has a talent for presenting emotional themes in the games hes been involved with. It's a shame these are the only games he has written for, and it will likely remain that way.
After oot, they had very little time to develop the whole game (no time to create lots of new NPC, for example) , and so the people of the team took inspiration from their real lives to write the different subquest. Is like we have a part of the personal life struggles of the dev team within the game. True art.
Other Zelda games, and games in general, will always have some hidden cash stash, or undiscovered treasures chests with nothing of value inside. Majora's Mask instead has hidden dialogues which further builds on some characters, making them even more relatable. Moments like this, with hidden pieces of character development, found in conversations with no music playing, just some ambiance, is why Majora's Mask will always be my favorite Zelda game, and one of my favorite games of all time.
Majora's mask has always been my favorite for those very reasons, a lot of the dialog just feels... Real. Usually in games of that era, side dialogs like those tend to be some small irrelevant talk, but in Majora's, a lot ot them are depressingly real, like Cremia basically wanting to bring Romani to the milk bar before the moon crashes, possibly so she can get her sister drunk and prevent her from suffering the intense anxiety and fear of their now impending doom. its... hard to believe this game was made in only about a year, they had to literally duct tape something together so they could release something instead of the intended "Ura Zelda" project, which was meant to be an expansion for OOT released on the, now flopped, N64 Disc Drive.
This game is so bittersweet. I enjoy how realistic the character are in that no matter what you do, you can't save everyone, not everyone is going to end up happy. I like to think this game is trying to tell us that. We'll always have problems in our daily lives whether it's the world ending tomorrow or our friend marrying our crush, it's just a fact we learn to live with eventually.
I have nearly 100 hours on the game and just found out Cremia actually did like Kafei through this?? This game is so amazing all from just a year of dev time is insane!
I honestly never knew shit was a love triangle, and now finding out after all these years I think I was unnecessary to involve Cremia in a whole my best friend's wedding drama, the rival ranchers and alien cattle thieves were enough and satisfying to me.
It's implied that she likes either Kafei or Anju, depending on how you interpret what she says about both of them. I think they left it ambiguous on purpose, that's something I like about this game
@@Cirquet Well, it's more likely they were hinting at Kafei lol remember, this game was made in 90s Japan so I don't think the designers would have been so progressive as to suggest Anju, although today we have no problem doing that. ☺
Oh, that's not what I'm trying to do at all. Just considering it as a possibility, based on some other bits of text in the game (mostly the lines in my previous video where Cremia reacts to different masks). I never said it was definitely the case, just a possibility. Also, Cremia and Anju aren't related. There's a line in a demo version of the game that implies that Cremia and Kafei are cousins, but it's not clear whether or not that was a mistranslation.
Damn, Kafei really had it going on, didn't he? Getting married to the owner of the town's most successful business AND having the eye of the ranch owner. Imagine if he wasn't getting married and there was a side quest to help him choose who to marry. I think I might end up choosing Cremia every time.
You forgot to mention you also need to defeat the aliens. I've seen this, and thought everyone knew this conversation, because you can do all three days with them, with multiple different outcomes, depending if you save the cows or not.
God... this one moment alone shows so much about this game. Romani knows Cremia loves Kafei, but now he's marrying Anju, so they can never be together. Cremia has to run the ranch by herself at a young age, probably no older than Adult Link from OoT, dealing with the two dumbasses who run the horse races, and caring for her sister. Romani has to deal with alien invaders every year, and her and Link only BARELY managed to fend them off this year. Will she be able to handle them alone next year? Romani has grown to like Link, and doesn't want him to leave. But deep down she knows he's probably very busy, never staying in one place for long, so she ultimately drops the subject. Cremia has to come to terms with the fact that the world is about to end, and she'll never get to see her sister grow up. So she's letting Romani have the legendary milk right before they both die, and wants her to be by her side when the world ends. And while it's heavily implied Romani is unaware of the world's imminent demise, deep down, I think she DOES know, but is just staying quiet about it so as not to upset her sister. Younger siblings always have a way of hiding the truth from their older siblings. Link, for as incredible as he is, is all alone in this world, no home, no friends, no family, nothing. The only home he's ever had is Kokiri Forest, and the only friend he's ever had was Saria, and the only family he's ever known was the Great Deku Tree. But he never goes back to Kokiri Forest following OoT, Saria is a sage in the Sacred Realm, most likely after being killed in the Forest Temple, and the Great Deku Tree is gone. While he did have Zelda for a time, he probably never saw her again after he departed Hyrule with the Ocarina of Time. And Navi ends up leaving when his first adventure ended, so she was gone, too. Link is truly alone in this world, and while he did eventually marry and have children in the future, hence why he has a descendent in Twilight Princess, his spirit's sorrow and regret he speaks about in that game makes it very clear his death was a tragic one that left him unable to rest for God knows how many years... When you stop to put all the pieces together, Majora's Mask is DAMN depressing. I'd argue mostly with Link himself, especially given the context of Twilight Princess. Although he accepts life as the hero now, it's clear there was never a happy ending for this guy, and he left this life unsatisfied and unfulfilled, displeased with himself.

There are some things you can’t change, no matter how hard you try.”
I honestly just wanna give the poor girl a big hug and cry with her. She’s so strong and she doesn’t deserve any of this.
Hey wait who's chopping onions here
And it makes even more sad that on the final day Cremia let's Romani have Chateau Romani milk (Which milk is a euphemism for alcohol in the game. You can see Gorman getting wasted at Latte every night) and asks her to sleep with her.
So she gets her little sister drunk and comforts her so she won't know or feel when the moon comes crashing down.
This kind of hits too because you know Link doesn't have a place to call home or any friends/family. He's completely alone.
To add to this, Termina ceases to exist once Link leaves. So all the friends he made there are gone forever.
Is Kafei exclusive to this game? Cuz I thought one of the big undermining trivia about this game is that those around Link are people based on those he has met in OOT and unless I’m missing something, I don’t think I recall Link ever meeting any potential original counterpart.

Cremia is hotter than Anju imo
True, but hey, she gets to live! She has a future and so does her little sister. The possibilities are now endless ❤
I have played this game for many MANY years, how have I never seen this conversation!?!
It blows my mind that Cremia actually liked Kafei, I thought Anju's mom was just spreading rumors.
Anju's mom mentions Cremia?
@@TheodoricEichen She mentions it during a conversation on the second night. You can only hear this conversation if you're in the Stock Pot Inn's reserved room and you don't tell Anju to wait for Kafei. Anju's mom will convince her to go to Romani Ranch and warn Anju that Kafei might be there with Cremia.
So the plot thickens
Back in 05' I didn't have internet, was home alone for a week, and didn't know anybody in town yet. Yeah, I booted up this old game and spoke to everyone with every mask.
I thought cremia liked anju-
I always thought it was ridiculous that Anju's mother was accusing Creamia and Kafei actually being together and just thought it was a Mother assuming the worse in a man and just jumping to the person closest to both people.
I Think this is my new Headcanon now
I think she's just really scared and hoping that Link will protect her from the apocalypse like he helped with the aliens.
@@andredelacerdasantos4439 She's thinking about next year, until the end Romani doesn't know the world is ending, Cremia makes sure of that
This is just one of the main reasons why as a kid I absolutely adored Majora's Mask.
I couldn't have said it better, I loved this part of the game so much, MM is really one of my favorite games ever.

Especially on the last day with the ground shaking... 😍🤣🤣🤣 jk
That’s why she’s asks her to sleep next to her thst night as a means of protecting her.

the part where she says her sister is in love with someone made me think about Kafei a bit.
The characters in Majora's Mask are so relatable. Having gone through a nasty breakup this year, I get why going into town would be hard for Cremia.
I hope you're gonna be ok, too
I've never seen any game that can be compared the realistic characters with Zelda MM.

I never knew Cremia was into Kafei, that's insane. Now I understand why Anju's mom kept insinuating that Kafei ran off to Cremia.

Fr real but that's normal since OoT is older than MM so Nintendo had time to improve some aspects of the game
I’d still say OoT is the better game overall though.
OoT had the excuse to be experimental. Majora's Mask was the second 3D Zelda game, and thus devs had insight.

I disagree, as I actually think the remake does a good job at playing up the weirdness, bizarreness and colourfulness of termina’s world. Plus it actually adds details to parts of the town such as posters which make the world feel more alive imo.
The only problem I have with the DS remake is that it completely screwed up the swimming controls. Everything else was a positive in my opinion.
I have a weird kind of nostalgia for the textbox sounds and the fire crackle. Its fascinating
Honestly, Romani has more awareness of things that Cremia gives her credit for.
All the more fitting Cremia eventually calls her an adult then :)
What makes this scene extra sad is that, if you come back to the ranch during the final hours of day 3, there is a dialogue where Cremia gives Romani a sip of Château Romani. She says something to the effect of Romani is 'old enough' now.
How did I miss this? Thankyou for upload. MM has unreal depth to it.

Other Zelda games, and games in general, will always have some hidden cash stash, or undiscovered treasures chests with nothing of value inside. Majora's Mask instead has hidden dialogues which further builds on some characters, making them even more relatable.

Zelda Devs really be f***** up writing this kind of dialog with full consciousness of what happens in the story
00:33 getting Houston and Coster film vibes seeing "Bodyguard". Cue Whitney Houston song.
You forgot to mention you also need to defeat the aliens. I've seen this, and thought everyone knew this conversation, because you can do all three days with them, with multiple different outcomes, depending if you save the cows or not.
Cool video.
God... this one moment alone shows so much about this game.
Although he accepts life as the hero now, it's clear there was never a happy ending for this guy, and he left this life unsatisfied and unfulfilled, displeased with himself.
oh snap MM has a love triangle? I never knew that wow...
