    Here's another quick video about how I setup my rig for surf fishing. For my gear setup, I use a 10' salmon rod and a Shimano Stradic ci4+ spinning reel. I use 20# braid fishing line. For bait, 2" gulp sandworms work best for surf fishing on the Oregon coast.

    Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.

    I went out surf perch fishing for the first time yesterday at Winchester bay and I had luck with just casting out far past the waves letting the bait sit on bottom and I just set my rod on a holder in the sand. It was easier for me to tell if the fish was biting. I caught 5 I just fished for 1 hour. Thanks for showing the rig set up. Great video.

    I was turned on to the same worms at a local bait shop as soon as I crossed into the southern border of Oregon. WOW what a miracle day I had of fishing. It was early July and I was surf fishing in Reedsport area near a jetty I believe. It was literally every single cast I landed a red tail!

    Hey PK, I just wanted to thank you for putting out these awesome videos on fishing for surf perch in Oregon, and for answering a bunch of my questions in the comments. So, following your recommendations, I am (almost) completely set up with two rods and reels, and learned how to rig Hi/Lo and Carolina. Plus I got a couple of rooster tails, and a Lucky Craft minnow. I live at the beach in northern Oregon, and have gone out about 10 times and had an absolute blast, even though I'm still kind of debugging the process. But learning at such a fast pace is great fun. So is catching fish! Anyway, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! I sincerely appreciate your help. Oh, also, my 86 year old mom has been enjoying your videos. Cheers.

Great commentary! Keep up the great work. I real love his conservation ethic. Only keep what you can use, leave them for future generations. In another video he showed how he bleeds the fish and kills them. I used to bonk my bottom fish on the head to stun them and then cut the gills to bleed them out to get blood out of the gills. In MA 2 hooks is max, except for ice fishing, which 5 is max, a treble counts as one, a lure, jig or device with multiple trebles is 1 hook. I wish the state would allow for 3 hooks so I could set 2 poles out for bottom fishing while casting a 3rd.

      I lived in Brookings and some people think the fishing is better near a fresh water source. I used to fish in Northern Cal at the mouth of the Smith River. You can drive up the beach or I would paddle across from Ship Ashore. I’d you get there and there is a sea lion in the water watching you, just go home. They will follow you up and down the beach scaring the fish away. I use the same Gulp bait as this guy. The meat is a little mushy but it’s better if you never let the fish meat touch fresh water. Clean the fish in salt water. I only use the meat for tacos.

    In watching anglers trying to catch stripers, they inadvertently catch huge barred and redtail surf perch using lures! By downsizing a bit, you could probably catch large surf perch. You'll catch more with sand worms or sand crabs, butif larger ones are your target, try bass lures!

    Hey PK, what’s your opinion on fishing the afternoon low tide. I thought I’d try 2 hours before low tide and at about 1 1/2 hours before low tide I started getting one or two every cast and they were all very nice size. I’ve been watching and following you for some time now. You’ve gotten my wife and I hooked and it’s been a blast. By the way, we stay at seaside a lot and fish from Gearhart north to the wreak. Today’s fishing at low tide was just about three hundred yards north of the sunset beach approach. Have a great day and I hope for your thoughts on this. Maybe one day we’ll run into each other on the beach... Blessings, Mark and Whitney

    • @oregonlife
      @oregonlife  4 роки тому

      Hi, Mark. It should be good. The general "rule" is 2 hours before high tide to 2 hours after high tide is best, but of course, people have caught fish outside of that time period. Time of day doesn't matter either as they are always feeding. More importantly, look for troughs, rip currents, or where you see waves stacking near shore. And move around a lot too if one spot doesn't produce.
      Hope to see you on the water. Tight lines.

    PK, how about a video how to catch surfperch from the boat in the bays? I looked around and there are practically no videos about it. I also went a while back to Winchester bay and caught no surfperch, but people catch red tail and shiners in the bay all the time...

    • @oregonlife

      I had that in mind for a while now. I hope to this year once they go in to spawn in the spring/summer.

    • @michaelo6124
      @michaelo6124 6 років тому

      PK Yi I've heard many times from people that surfperch go to bays to spawn, but I doubt it. I might be wrong on that point, and I searched online for evidence of this... What I know is that surfperch do not congregate in the summer, when they are pregnant, around rivers. They are abundant everywhere, in California oftentimes hundreds of miles from any river, pregnant or not, and they often live in the bays without leaving them. They are always present in SF Bay, regardless of the season. I know that because I fished in there a lot.
      I've seen people with surfperch in the boats in Winchester bay in the winter. I think they are everywhere and go to bays and maybe stay in bays in search of food but not for spawning.

    Hey PK, have you noticed any difference between the Gulp Sandworms coming out of the new packaging vs the old packaging? I've gone through two packs of the new ones and felt that the worms were smaller and less durable than the old ones. Also looks like they introduced a partial vacuum seal as part of the new packaging which causes the bag to press up tightly against the worm and gives them a "flattened" appearance when you take them out. Not sure if I just picked up a bad batch or if this is just the future for Gulp...

      Never noticed it. Haven't opened any new batch. I've got some old batch from over a year ago I've never opened. When I began drying them out, they last so damn long, I think it'll be a year before I open my new packets. But Thanks for the heads up, I might have to open a new pack to test it out. If it's the case, then that's not good.

      +PK Yi Wow that is crazy, I go through at least a bag almost every month. I've tried the drying out method but unfortunately it doesn't seem to work as well on the fish in my area, so I am stuck with using them straight out of the bag. Looking forward to hearing your feedback.

      Yes. You can catch surf perch year round. Very important to check the swell report before you go. Good luck.

    are rods n reels made for sea fishing so they wont rust etc? how would i know if any of the rods i got at home are sea worthy?

    • @oregonlife
      @oregonlife  3 роки тому

      Any fishing rods can be used for ocean fishing. Just rinse it out when you're done.

      @@oregonlife well some rods have eye rings made from steel ,yes they can be cleaned but what about reels? those also can easly get rusty from the salt water and sea air ,i know that sea fishing reels are made for such purpose ,i tried using my fresh water reel one time and i can see some rusting that needed to be cleaned fast specially if it gets in the gears or on the bail etc

    I am greatly saddened that Cabela's stopped selling their Tourney trail Salmon/Steelhead rods. I own a number of them and think they were one of the best value rods on the market. They were such a good deal when they went on sale. And I really liked the improved reel seat design on the IM8 ones. I don't like the feel of the more expensive Fish Eagle ones nearly as much.

      Sportsman's warehouse still carry them, and some high-end Lamiglass.

      The Tourney trail fishing rods are Cabela's own brand. They aren't sold anywhere else. The are(were) an exclusive of Cabelas. Maybe they bought out some old remaining stock at some point. Not offered now. :(

    What do you think about the Shimano SpeedMaster XTC 14000 for surf fishing?

    • @oregonlife
      @oregonlife  4 роки тому

      (For the Oregon coast) I started out with a Ultegra Ci4+ 14000 years ago, but soon discover that it was way overkill. I'm down to a size 3000 or 4000 and that works a lot better. You don't need heavy gear for surf fishing the Oregon coast. Keep it light but that's just me. Good luck.

      Oh sorry, I'm going to keep mine. I actually got only 2. But I was at Sportsman's Warehouse today and saw a couple of rods that seems really nice for surf fishing. They are the Shimano Scimitar, and the Okuma SST rods. They are about $50 which is cheaper than the Cabela's. I will be picking a few up and do a review, stay tuned. Here is the link to the Shimano Scimitar:
      fish.shimano.com/content/sac-fish/en/home/products/fishing-rods/stickbait/scimitar-ss.html . The 9 foot spinning is the one I got my eye on and will get that one.

    A twelve inch perch is considered "huge"? We regularly catch them from 20 to 22 inches in Gold Beach. 12 inches would not be worth keeping.

    Curious if you live anywhere near Newberg, Oregon? I am a member of NW Steelheaders and a lot of members are interested in Surf Perch fishing. Are you interested in being a guest speaker at a meeting? If not do you know of someone?
