- How do you catch California Surf Perch?
What rod do you use for Surf Perch?
What Line, lures, and tackle, etc. So I get asked a lot about the different ways I catch Barred Surf Perch from the beach in California. So spent some time going over rigging I use for surf perch and the rest of the gear that I use here on the beaches on the California Coast.

Surf Perch Fishing California - • Epic California Surf P...
Seal vs Angler: • SEA LION AGAINST ANGLE... .
What are you going to be using this season?
RHYAK big hammers and underspins
Buck tails n shrimp
Carolina rig, in England we call it a running ledger . We generally use a very short hook length, approximately 6 inches, whole squid as bait, on a 2/0 hook. This is used for fishing for Bass or rays or cod or whatever else is stupid enough to eat the squid. Rarely plastics are used, if not squid then ragworm which is very commonly used.
Thanks for the tips, I just moved to Monterey CA area and have just started getting into Surf fishing. Just caught my first perch last week, I’m hooked. I will be testing ur tips here.
I just moved here a couple weeks ago. Can you recommend any general areas where there's decent structure sandbars/cuts that would be productive to fish from shore?
for the 110 I coat it with clear epoxy got tired of buying it over and over cause the paint always came off. works like a charm
UPDATE: I used the lucky craft 110 zebra minnow with garlic sent near Cambria and nailed a near 2LB barred perch . your video helped me change the way I fish the beach completely thank you ...and keep making more videos!
AWESOME MAN... CONGRATS ON THE PIG
Not a kayaker, but as someone that almost exclusively surf fishes this was a great video. I'm further up the coast in SF where the swells are nastier than the Central Coast or SoCal, but your tips and setup would absolutely produce fish up here. Well explained and put together and thank you for putting links in the description. Helps out a ton! Tight lines.
P thanks for the feedback appreciate it
P I was gonna say the same! Rhyak I've seen many "how to" Surf Perch videos man and yours is the best one by far. Concise, informative, and the explanations of the lures where to the point.
I would add that Surf casting a LC Flash Minnow in windy conditions sucks big time! I have a couple of Surf Pointers that cast a little bit better than the Flash Minnows, may wanna try those on your next BSP trip. They too catch some slabs. Thanks again for taking time to make this video and sharing your knowledge.
Peace! ✌🏾
Sup P. Where do you like to fish? Ocean beach is hit or miss but fun.
One of the best, informative videos. I fish So Cal beaches and the plastic grubs and sand crabs work good on the beach. We also have some piers which requires a little heavier line (15-20 ) to land the fish on the pier. Blood worms and lug worms are great on a pier but must be dropped in the surf with a Carolina type rig. There's many videos to watch but few tell you the rigs, lures, and techniques like yours. Most just show some guy fishing with a go-pro and leaves you wondering what was used. Thanks again, I've been fishing these beaches for a while and am gonna try the 6 inch lure on the beach for the first time.
GUADALUPE VERACRUZ DE LA VEGA thanks man, I know the guys kill it down south on the minnow in the surf. Pretty sure usually March they start getting some Halibut on them regularly.
Great tutorial..that second rig with a round 1 oz. weight on the bottom and 2 hooks about a foot apart is a killer in San Diego beaches, with the 2 inch sand worms. 10 lb. line. I seem to cast farther with the weight on the bottom than the Carolina rig...but it works good too. Last week we used blood worms on the pier where the surf breaks..15 lb. line and caught 12 fish....Corbina, Croakers and perch.
Awesome! Just got into surf fishing here in Santa Barbara! Nice to have a central coast angler that knows what and how to fish our waters! Keep the videos coming! Thanks man!
Hey man there were some big cabbie in carpenteria in the early 80's. I used to fish the oil piers.
one of the best explanation videos I saw on surf perch!!!
good job man!
I can’t wait to go back surf fishing this time I wanna go to north Cali and move up the coast making an adventure of it. I was in Florida and walked the beach from 10pm-7am had a blast and met a few night dwellers like myself
Sounds like a blast man...
RHYAK it was I don’t get many chances to have adventures so i make the best out of them whenever i can
Great low-key informative video on the basics for catching perch. I am on my third day of surf fishing for perch at mouth of Klamath and have hooked two.Need to tune up my tactics.
Good luck up there thats a productive spot for sure.
Hi .
Thanks a lot for your videos. I am just starting to use a rod to fish and I learned some valuable things from you.
I lately used some Gulp sandworms here in Maryland around the sandypoint area but didn't get any bites on them.
I liked that double rigged set up. I haven't seen that been used in SoCal yet. I should give that a try. I normally use LuckyCraft Flash Minnow or the Pointers for the surf. I also use the Perch Grub or Sandworms too. Nice Video.
Damn Ryan, you were killing that perch on that bro! Nice!!!
Thanks for the video. I bought a new rod and reel. Lamiglass was my choice. Thanks!!
Good video on equipment & their uses. I use the same rig you showed and Berkely Gulp grubs almost exclusively. I did buy 2 Lucky Craft #110's recently & plan on using them in non-windy conditions. I'll send you a comment when I try them out.
Have you tried them out yet?
hey frankie is james your dad? in santa cruz?
So yeah I do what you do. thanks for the video. I caught a 3 and half foot stripper with a carolina rig and a 3 oz sliding egg weight. the bait i used was just the head of a pacific mackerel. mind blow when it happened.
Dustin Baker Nice man...
This is the best video I’ve found so far in what to use for surf perch. Thank you sir. Just subscribed.
I just came back from a Santa Barbara fishing trip. Went to Leadbetter Beach and I caught some pretty nice surf perch using Berkeley Sand Worms (no sandcrabs, unfortunately). I was surprised at how well it worked.
There is a reason they call it Perch Crack
Nice video. I'm going to have to try your drop shot set up. I think a couple things you left out. Specifically for someone just starting out is where to find the fish. It's important to move up and down the beach looking for the troughs, holes, and rip currents. Also, I see a lot of beginners just heaving as far out and straight out as they can. I always stress that perch are normally relatively close to shore and that fan casting is the best way to locate them. Lastly, you should check out lugworms. They're a bit pricey, but I find they work way better than their artificial counterpart.
Philip Grasso love the drop shot feel it's cleaner then a Dropper loop in the surf.
we should fish sometime. I regularly go to ventura or carpenteria. I use a daiwa bg 5000 on a 10 foot heavy power daiwa blank. I catch surf perch on a spoon then use the perch as cutbait for sharks or predators. Such a good time
Thanks for all this useful information!!!
Thx man! Good info! I am in Ventura and about to get ready to fish this summer and was looking for a video like this to dial me in !
Great tutorial. Thanks man! See you on one of the NCKA meetups. Shelter Cove in May!
Good info. Will give that first rig a try here in Nth Florida in the next couple of days. Fish have had lockjaw for the last couple of weeks cuz of the tropical storm remnants blowing through. Going to try adding trailers of Fish Bites that are manufactured here locally to increase the odds for success a bit.
With world of Respect to my fisherman brother from a different mother ! like and enjoyed your video !! definitely going to put it into the use , !! The only thing I guess you forgot to say is that definitely have to change the triple Hooks on the lucky craft or any other lure like that , I just saw the Brother lost a big fish that bent one point and broke the another hook point on the same lure , thanks for good work bro !! And please let us know about different Beaches and technique in south California , and the excellent work on links that you provide to us
Super informative and clear! Looking forward to trying that carolina rig!
Thanx for the different setups
keep it up, much appreciated.
Great video, but even better description! Looks like you put a lot of effort into making this video convenient for viewers 👍🏼
Oh yeah thanks for the tips brother I'm going to pismo on the next month I want to do some surf fishing, for sure will try this thanks again brother
Moving back to Santa Barbara from New Mexico next week. Going to get back into fishing. Loving these vids! You got a new sub here!
I love the camo worms. Always a bite from the perch.
Try the blood red sandworms too. Sometimes they like them more than camo IMO.
new to surf perch fishing but i like your info
Great video. Headed up near Lompoc next week.
I am trying to get in to suf fishing I enjoyed the video. keep them coming
Thank you
hey man! im so glad i found your channel. youre fishing the same beaches that i am!
Good stuff bud! Thanks from Huntington Beach, CA
Thanks Andrew, Have you been able to get out and fish lately
Yes bud, my son and I been out on surf and Huntington Beach pier a few time in last 2 weeks and caught a total of 12 Corbina, 4 corvina, 1 surf perch, 1 24inch ugly arse guitarfish. Fun stuff... all on sand crabs. No luck on 2 inch gulp sand worm:(.
Nice video man. Helpful
the BG's are a fantastic reel... classic as it gets
Very informative thank you for sharing greatly appreciate it
Very informative👍 great video! Helped me a ton!!!
Thanks alot. You gave me a nice idea about a rod.
Dude, super helpful n easy to follow. I just started catching perch n this was timely. U should have tons more subs 👍
Nice one RHYAK! really enjoyed the tips :)
Super informative video man, really appreciate the content!
Good information. Well done. Thanks for this.
Just subscribed, hoping to try surf style fishing on Lake Winnipeg this year ( once the ice has gone!)
Thanks for your tips, can't wait to start fishing in Vandenberg.
Some good tips and lures.
Great information. Much needed
Thanks for the tips! I have had mediocre luck fishing during the winter along the oregon coast. I fish a high low rig with a 2oz disk weight and worms. I would love some tips on beaches that are more productive!
I'm done using shrimp and sand crabs! Always hate using bait and sinkers.
Right on, way more fun to get them on the retrieve
Good stuff, looking forward to trying the Flash Minnow up my way.
Die Hard Fishing let me know how it goes.
Nice video did a great job in describing the items! Be cool(er) if could do a still of the Gulp/hooks and so on of the packages would make it a tad easier to see. Seeing that is my only whine as I do too often keep the videos coming.
Mark E. thanks for the feedback
Thanks for the video! very informative!
Great tips dude I might have to change up my approach a little bit.
Mike's Tackle Box thanks man, definetly more then 1 way to get these guys.
Dude, awesome vid! so informative! cant wait to try these and hit the water! liked and subscribed!
Thanks Man! Have you been able to hit the water and give any of it a try
Thanks for an awesome and informative video!! Would you recommend changing the hooks on the lucky craft lure for stronger type of hooks?
I ordered the floating pinched crawlers, I have grubs and I'll order the 2" swim baits. That will make good days of perch fishing
good stuff man. I'm fishing san diego, pretty new to surf fishing. finding it hard to find them.
I.Deal Baits keep moving don't spend 10 minutes in one spot if your not catching them. I pretty much give it 5 cast tops and move
RHYAK ok cool, I've been on the move but spending more time then that at each spot. thanks for the advice!
Thanks for the info 🤠
Cool vid bro. March 1st is opening day on rockfish right? Watching your kayak vids got me pumped up and i ended up getting my own kayak last year. I was able to go out 3 times last year and fish the kelp beds, had an awesome trip every time! Im officially addicted. Thanks man 😁👍🏼
mario irvin yup March 1st for down south most of our stuff is still not open till April 1st
Thanks for the great videos. Your advice has resulted in the slaying of a lot of BSP and smelt in pismo. I was going to try the lucky craft 110sp but because the price of the lure I was wondering if you could tell what colors or patterns you would recommend if you were going to buy a couple. Thank you.
Honestly have pretty much stuck with the Sardine pattern. But any natural bait color would probably work.
Very practical advice. Thanks for presentation. Going to central coast in August, any advice?
Thanks.
hey i live in morro bay and go fishing quite a bit and just wanted to know what your favorite fish to catch is, loved the vid
Dang, that answer can be pretty loaded. I love to catch new species as often as possible like that challenge. But hard to beat an albacore on a flylined bait or any tuna for that matter.
Great video man
great vid, very informative....
Catching surfperch with the Berkley sandworms in San Francisco. They seem to like the smell of the juice.
awesome channel! just found it, trying to explore surf fishing a bit more and get a round about setup for northern/central california (Im closer to the bay area). Appreciate the tips here!
Good video buddy..Going to be doing my first trip out next week in Santa Cruz area. Will definitely be trying out a few of your tips. Keep ya posted 👍🏻
Hell yea bro thanks for the great info
Great video
I have has a lot of success on the east coast on Long Island using poppers. 6 inch flat nose. I want to go to Pismo Beach later this month. Do you think I would have any success out there? And what about Calico Bass?
Calico bass are extemely rare north of santa barbara county, but perch all day man. i would say to start go witg sand crabs strait from the surf, or the 2inch grubs
thanks for the tips, hopefully I'll limit this weekend.
How did it go man, did you get that limit
Yea I actually limited both days, I was using the clam necks I got the same morning
Well done Seal Beach Ca
I want to start surf fishing and fishing off rock walls and peers around LA, what is a good lure to use to catch the big ones off the shore? And what’s a good all around pole?
If fishing off the piers and walls your probably gonna want something a little heavier in the 10-25lb range. Hard to beat swimbaits off the walls. But just to catch fish just catch some bait and use that.
My father in-law stays in Morro Bay and I have always wanted to surf fish and this video was awesome and informative. Just one question though do I need a certain stamp on my license or is the California fishing license all that I need?
This far north no stamp needed. Down south you do need a enhamcement stamp
Thanks for the tips
Quick question 110 in anchovy are out of stock next best lure in your opinion thanks enjoy your vids
have you ever thrown a smaller popper? or would it get washed to shore pretty easily?
I wonder if a black body silver wing spin n glo would work. My thought is it would mimic a sand crab
Do off-set worms hook like what you’d use for freshwater bass work!
Have not tried them but bet they would work
First and foremost thanks for putting the setup at the opening of the video. I wanted to know if i can use my set up that have which is a 6.5 pole medium heavy fast action 8-10lbs test, shimano with a shimano seinna 2500. Will I still be able to use it to fish for perch if I put some braided line?
Rockdahouse Would say that should get the job done for sure.
You should do one on surf fishing for halibut on the central coast
Have anyone use 2” powerbait shad? Thinking about trying that versus sandworms . Plan to use a high/low rig and put one bait on each hook. Which bait will win? Most likely sandworms will win but I got to try it out. I saw the Berkley earth worms in sporting goods store and thought about trying that too. Thanks for the info and happy fishing.
SF Crabberman im sure they would kill it
Good informative video. The first of yours I have seen. Innovative ways to catch surf perch. Thank you. I live in Sacramento, so my infrequent but favorite type of coast fishing is 2-3 hours away, minimum, to SF Bay Area or Pacifica beaches. Do your methods apply here equally? Where is your general surf fishing area?
I'm a beginner surf fisherman and will be primarily be fishing between San Francisco to Bodega Bay. Are there certain times in the year that are best to go perch/striper fishing, or is it good to go all year long?
Hey man I live in the central coast and I wanted to know what else I can catch out in the surf. I'm a novice and I love to learn from others
Mainly perch but there are stripped bass, and sharks and rays.
Love the info, do you add weight to the lucky craft for heavier surf?
Good video bro
I think I asked on another video of yours. I went to tackle shop here. All out of 110 sardines. So they suggested 115.. there's a few sellerrs on ebay 110 saltwater flash minnow but what color works best? There are lots to choose from
EL FishY keep it in the natural colors and the 115 should do the trick since it dives to 3 to 5 which will dive plenty deep enough
I tried the 115 metallic sardine for about 30 mins today. Caught a big bat ray and couple croaker. Mailman delivered TWO 110's both same color 635 MBP .i'll try em sometime in next couple weeks when I get a couple free hours.. thank you for replying
Do you ever catch any halibut from the surf? I usally surf fish from Santa Cruz to Oceano and all i catch is BSP. I recently fished in Ventura Beach and hooked into a few halibut.
Not up on the Central Coast but down in Santa Barbara the shorts are hard to keep off.
Thanks man. Me and the kid are trying to get into/back into fishing. We got skunked at Port San Luis today, watching schools of perch swim past our squid. Haha. But it was a last minute thing and I don’t have my license, so I’m stuck on the pier for now. Do the same rigs work off piers?
Nice Video
Jeff Horton thanks Jeff, hope to see you on the water soon
Central coast!!! 5 cities.
Quick question have you ever look at mystrey tackle box inshore and thought it might work for our coast line?
Jorge, It would probably have some useful stuff in it from time to time. Did the bass version for almost a year and ended up not using most of the stuff so been reluctant to start a new subscription.
HI i loved your video what is the Best season to go fishing perch?
I usually spend more time on the beach fishing for them in the winter/spring when the season on the water is closed but honestly have caught them all year. They do not travel far and once you find a beach that has them catching them should be consistent year round.
When is the best time of the year to go surf perch fishing? I was thinking winter time. Or does it really matter?
I'll use the lucky craft metalic sardine, and gulp sand worms and live sand crabs
hey i live in guadalupe just started fishing here and oso flaco and havent caught anything is my size 6000 reel to big and my 9 foot pole med heavy too much to feel a bite i been using grubs and lures
It should get the job done, but down size and you will feel more bites and have a lot more fun. Lets face it would you use that set up for a 12 inch fish in a lake when throwing light tackle for lets say bass. Lets hook up soon and fish.
