Say what you will about Taika Waititi and his films, but you’ve got to respect that he takes Native and Indigenous representation seriously.
❤❤Recommending Whale Rider and Smoke Signals! Amazing films! ❤❤
I just bought a DVD of Kanehsatake (270 Years of Resistance) and two of the other films by that director. Really changed how I feel about my country and helped everything make more emotional sense.
If you're into these, I suggest checking out these other amazing Indigenous films:
- The Body Remembers when the World Broke Open
- Wildhood
- Beans
- Night Raiders
- Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner
There's so much amazing Indigenous cinema out there, happy it's being given the platform it deserves
Thanks for this! Added a few to my watchlist!
Surprised you did not feature our indigenous Australian director Warwick Thompson, particularly his award winning and punch in the face film "Samson and Delilah" it is brilliant
Co-signing Empty Metal, that movie is AMAZING and totally wild
A fantastic watchlist, i've only seen a couple
Damn these all sound like bangers
Can we get a list of these?
We need to care more about the opinions of native people. Thank you letterboxd for this addtion.
came here for the hope of seeing a Malni-Towards the Ocean, Towards the Shore rec
Next year invite indigenous filmmakers from Latin America, Asian, and African countries too. Even if they´re not English speakers as this selection is biased towards indigenous filmmakers from nations colonized by English speaking nations
