Sao might’ve been the only anime I constantly think about. It set high expectations for any other anime I’ve watched.

I feel the exact same way, Attack on Titan was my first and I thought it was the best thing in the world. The same was for SAO and Death Note, I can't hate them because they got me into something I love. Though, two years ago I would've been ashamed to admit that.
2016 I believe had the worst communities I've been in, everything was toxic and the four bigs of that year we're constantly bombarded with hate and praise it was like a mine field. The Crunchyrole Awards made it incredibly worse. At that point in time I was a borderline eIitist, I had just binged watched a ton of classics and was really into reviewers. I thought I needed to showcase my "good" taste by shitting on the hype show of the season because everybody else was. But After a while I started not enjoying watching anime, every new show wasn't good enough and I needed to change my outlook.
When things calmed down in 2017, I watched shows with an open mind and I ended up enjoying myself. I watched the four bigs that year being Erased, Re:Zero, Konosuba and Yuri on Ice, 3 of which I enjoyed after setting aside my initial salty attitude. That year really made me stop being so critical and hateful towards shows that were popular, I realized that every show has merit and reason why people like it so much. That's why so I'm so forgiving towards shows I see potential in and if something isn't for me I won't hate it for that.

Ouch that hurt Death Note doesn't get much hate. SAO is generally hated for many reasons though. Attack on Titan on the other hand, is a different case. It blew up in popularity and with it came many obnoxious fans, just like with Rick and Morty. The difference is that AOT is very well written, has great themes, characters, action, depth and much more. There's a few nitpicks, but that's it.
The "UA-cam critics" usually spend much of their time in the comunity, so it's not wierd that they've come to hate the series. There's alot of bias when it comes to Attack on Titan, becouse of the "hype effect". it's both overrated and underrated at the same time. Many fans only want action and titans. While many critics don't care about the depth and clever writing it has.
Fearch 93 the best example of the hype effect is Erased.
Attention is my drug I wouldn't say so. It was hyped and started out strong but it's downfall was it's own fault, not the hype. Very contrived, bad villian and it makes less sense the more you think about it. The part with the abused girl was pretty well portrayed though. It also had great soundtracks and animation.
Fearch 93 it and Sao had something in common, the concept and the first episodes were good compared to the rest. In my opinion that set both of the series off poorly

Kirito said he was a solo player a lone wolf next episode he joins a guild, random girls coming from outta no where talking about pink hair bitch and purple hair bitch. Throw away character remember that dude in the first episode who kirito told him the basics of the game yeah him, he served no purpose what so ever, literally he did NOTHING no character development. The girl that we were suppose to be sad about her death, guess what I wasn't sad because we know NOTHING about her, she said some none important stuff and dies then she like had some revival thing so we got the second best girl the one with the pet, because she got screen time best girl asuna in sao the one with decent character development. So barly any character development the baby girl thats made out of computer shit was just there for the plot, she did nothing ngl I kinda liked her in the first episode she got introduce but then she kinda just became boring and I didn't give a shit about her. The final boss was there to be there he fought kirito showed us that he was strong kirito found out that he was the bad guy because plot and he wins. And what happend to the ice dragon.
SaO was basically the first anime that i watched that made me realise what anime actually is and not just a tv show id tune into to watch after school staying up late trying to keep up and to know if my fav characters would actually survive the world they are in. I will always love SaO and the ending of the first season did bring tears to my eyes as it was unfolding. I wouldnt say its my fav anime but it’s definitely a anime that will stay in my heart.

Dude I love Sword Art Online and that says a lot because It has the magic sauce. The music, the story, the characters, the romance.. It's super cheesy, but so endearing and lovable :)
Although I'm happy that you have reviewed some of my favorite shows (Kaiji, Gintama, JoJo), although I'm happy that you gave Junni Taisen the justice it deserved when no one else would, this is probably my favorite video you've made so far, it just feels like a love letter to anime. I love this show. Watched it more times than I care to admit (thanks to a boring job) and I get it. I get why people dislike it, I get the criticisms of it but that doesn't stop it being my favourite anime. I even love the abridged youtube series for it; I know it's not the best, of ones I've seen I'd say FMA/FMAB are the best, but I won't ever stop liking it or its characters. And your video does a great job defending it while not excusing it. Thank you for that. You deserve more views, man!

The more you watch, the more you realize that maybe the anime that introduced you to the medium has its apparent flaws - but even so, that doesn't change the fact that I hold it close to my heart, because I had so much fun while watching it and it made me feel all sorts of things.

I think after watching or at least seeing videos in my recommendations of stuff like "____ is Garbage" and other videos like that. It's cool to see that there are still videos like these. I would love to hear someone tell me why they love an anime that usually gets a bad rap. That might due to the burnout of hate videos, and those videos don't need to go away, but I still don't think we get enough videos like these.

no matter the circumstances, everyone's first and only anime they've seen, is their favourite anime, at least during that time
it's when you get into a medium that provides such a broad spectrum of almost everything just by sticking with one series alone, if the characters and core messages hits close to home, it can be hard to be detached from, that was me when i first dived into this universe when watching and gushing over naruto
that feeling slowly goes away once you find out that you barely scratched the surface of what the medium has to offer, as you watch more and more shows, and you grow out of trends of certain shows that you had previously embraced as a fan

Okay, sorry it’s off topic, but I personally enjoy A Lull in the Sea, and that and SAO are absolute gorgeous. SAO was great, I probably will read some of the light novels too! It is just entertaining, and by now I have watched plenty of anime’s, and I have 3 things I want them to be. These include: entertaining, eye pleasing (I don’t really watch old anime), and age appropriate. So, yes, I enjoyed this anime. (Please don’t hate on me!!)

I understand what you're saying. Personally, when I go into a show, the first thing I expect is entertainment and then the quality of the show may come to be when I look back on the show or rewatch it. A lot of the time I watch a show and really enjoy it, but later on I start realizing that it isn't as amazing as I thought it was when I first watched it.
One of my gateway animes was actually Your Lie in April. The first time I watched it, I was blown away by just how beautifully stylized and emotionally gripping that anime was. However, as much as I still enjoy that anime, I start noticing many of the small hiccups to larger problems with the series and my absolute love that I used to have for it has suddenly faded. Many of the problems I start noticing was due to having a large portions of my time afterward to really think about the quality of the anime and I also started watching other animes that have a similar tone that I felt were more well put together than an anime that really felt like it was trying way too far to get a particular emotion out of you, whether it be sobbing like a baby or laughing hysterically at the odd humor.
But if I didn't experience the thrill of watching Your Lie in April, or other animes like Death Note and Little Witch Academia, I wouldn't have sat down and watched amazing animes like Full Metal Alchemist, Nichijou, Baccano!, and Nana. Even if I have problems with Your Lie in April, it still holds a special place in my heart for getting me into anime in the first place and I'm very grateful of that :)

It's kind of nice to hear a rather reasonable and fresh take on this topic. Honestly, Sword Art Online is my favorite anime, and I don't see that changing any time soon. I won't say it's the best, because it's objectively not, but SAO really connected with me in a way that doesn't happen often. Most of the criticism I hear is filled with either distortions or outright lies, which really rubs me the wrong way. But, I really don't care what other people enjoy or want to think. I know SAO isn't everyone's cup of tea; I just want people to stop shaming myself and the other people who find it enjoyable and quite good.

Kirito is a boring character, his design is unorigibal and cliche, he is overpowered, he doesnt have any flaws, he always wins and gets the girls, he has no personality and now Azuna, decent at first but later becomes a princess in need of saving, and the rest of the characters are all bullshit, they are unmemorable and cringe and when they actually create a good side character that didnt want kiritos japanese cock what do they do to him? Turn him into a fucking sword.

For me, it was when Jacksepticeye, of all people, (back in early 2016) played the AoT game which finally pushed me enough to start watching anime after multiple failed attempts by my friends recomending anime.
Though in the end they're just shounen trash anyway... a.k.a. Naruto, One Piece (Heard its fine) and Fairy Tail... A LOT of Fairy Tail fans in my class...
Thank Haruhi that AoT had no "fanservice", or else I would've given up on the medium at that point. When I was watching, I thought: "Huh, so anime isn't just hentai..."
Though (because of "specific pirate streaming site's sidebar advertisements), my second anime was then SAO.
Finished both seasons in two consequtive midnights.
I somehow *didn't* even thought about the fanservice in the show. (Most probably because my brain still having a filter from AoT's complete lack of fanservice.)
I remember myself loving the show quite a bit. Though was disappointed that Kirito and Asuna's relationship weren't the focus after the first arc...
Also, was watching with my (at the time) 7 year old cousin... Then that tentacle scene... yeah... good times?.....
I had this period from February 2017-August 2017 where (because of me being easily influenced along with those online influences, ehem...) I hated SAO to the guts.
It wasn't until I rewatched the series again and I realized... it wasn't that bad... Maybe a 6/7...
Then from watching a random YT vid talking about SAO, I saw that person's watchlist had a show called Henneko.

Heh, I remember when I thought the anime adaptation of Love Hina was amazing since it was one of the first ones I learned about. Now I recognize it as trash, but I do look at it fondly for introducing me properly to the medium. As an older fan, I understand why a newcomer may like a series I despise. The hook of anime is very strong and many series have that hook no matter how flawed they may actually be.
The good thing about starting low, is that things just get better from there.
Man, me too. Love Hina holds a special place in my catalog. I followed it up with Galaxy Angel, if you know what I'm referencing. ;)
I feel the same though at times limited perspective can be frustrating. It’s not the anime at fault though. It just needs fans should help nurture that love from potential fans and help them discover something they may enjoy. Open up their perspective. Of course it’s important to have patience and don’t rush them. Be as accepting as possible. Show them we’re a great community even if it at times gets a little rowdy.
Also, gateway anime are so fun to watch even 10 years later.

I enjoyed SAO 2 a lot, actually. Didn't seem to try to be more than it is, unlike SAO 1. It also had more explanations, better pacing and knew where it was going. It wasn't better than a 6 or 7/10 for me, but it wasn't bad.

I totally get you. The anime that got me into the medium to this extent was Highschool DxD. It is not one of the best anime ever made but it was my gateway and without it, I would have never seen so many great shows...

I have conflicting feelings on Sword Art Online as there are parts that I absolutely love(the end of season 2 being my favorite) but the rest felt really meh to me. Couldn't really tell you why but I just got tired of the girls falling in love with Kirito when he already had Asuna. I love your videos and really respect your thoughts on SAO. At one point I didn't like SAO at all but I realized even with its problems, I enjoyed my time with SAO.
Your videos are great and I don't know how your videos don't get more views. Great job and keep it up. Some video suggestions are Star Driver, Jing the Bandit King, Clannad, Heat Guy J, One Outs, and Hikaru no Go.

Couldn’t agree more on how my life (on a certain level) would be different if it wasn’t for SAO laying the foundation down to where the medium is for me now.
Of course you’ll have new favorites later on down the road. Or be able to distinguish between good or bad as you keep watching shows. But, no anime will be as close to your heart as your first. :)

To be honest sword art online is my number one favorite anime. And That's something I cant just through out their without getting criticised or anything like that. Because out of nowhere people will talk Crap about why it's the worst anime ever and some of their points are just stupid to the max. I liked the story, the pastimg, even the characters, Sword art online was amazing I had fun watching it for the first time I cried and laughed and so much more. I've watched a lot of AMAZING anime in my life some before and some after SAO and yet Sword art online is my favorite and will forever be my favorite no matter what. If someone criticize someone for loving Sword art online then that makes them a complete asshole and yet those are the same people that complain "know what oppinions are" but anyway ya thats my story. Its easy to get caught up in the hype no matter how much anime experience you have. I myself remember when digimon and pokemon where a huge thing. That was my hate way in a way. I've love anime ever since and have always kept an open mind with what I watch. Shows like sao and fairy tail are by far two popular series that people like to shit on. Its hard finding a youtube video that actually gives these Shows some merit. Yes there not perfect but I still enjoyed them and at the end of the day it what you like that's the most important. So yeah ignore the haters and troll and just enjoy your anime for what it is.
When I first started watching anime I always looked at reviews and such, so I didn't end up watching SAO until I realized it's something I kinda needed to watch so I could have an opinion on it. By then I've already seen too much to like it, and I just had to stop watching at 20 eps in.

Well if you only watched one element of a set and you declare it best of the set you're a bit illogical. Not to toot my own horn but when I watched only One Piece mainly I still said it was just my favourite not the best.
