When it comes to electric car sales there are two brands that stand head and shoulders above everyone else. We won’t give you any prizes for guessing the first one - it’s run by a quiet unassuming chap called Elon - but the second biggest may surprise you… It’s BYD.
Last year, BYD sold more than 911,000 pure electric cars and if current sales trends continue, it won’t be long before it’s even bigger than Tesla. Part of the reason for BYD’s incredible growth is the fact that it wants to build smaller, more affordable cars. Cars like this - the new Dolphin, which has just landed in the UK. These are going to be the kind of cars that really open up electric car ownership for the masses. In fact, we’re prepared to go as far as saying they will be the ‘peoples car’ for the electric age.
Are we about to see a big change in attitudes towards car brands? Is BYD going to be the new Volkswagen? We figures that the only way to kick start that particular conversation was to compare their latest contenders: the BYD Dolphin and the new ID.3.
On paper, the BYD is cheaper, comes with more kit and a larger battery while offering the same amount of interior space. However, it doesn’t come with the Volkswagen badge, which, for many, is just as important as a few extra gadgets.
Join Ginny and Nicola as they pore over the details and compare the two back-to-back. Which would you choose from these two? Are you happy to spend your money on a relatively unknown brand in the UK? As always, we love to hear your comments.

Nothing wrong with brand bias and loyalty as long as the brand doesn't take it for granted. As customers, we need competition to bring the price down and the quality up, to get our hard-earned money's worth.
The BYD Atto 3 has in no time become one of the most common EVs here in Sweden. They are litteraly everywhere, these days. I will be surprised if the Dolphin, Seagull and Seal does not follow in the Atto's footsteps....
I'm waiting on the BYD Seal reviews and tests with the EU spec car, It might tempt me away from a Polestar 2.
Oh no! Hopefully European brands step up!
@@ArpanMukhopadhyay93let me guess, brainless Modi sheep? 🤡 🤡 🤡
they've taken off here in NZ too. We don't have any of the others yet, but I think the MG4 will make it hard for the Dolphin.
@@ArpanMukhopadhyay93 exactly - they don't seem to know how hard to push for the future and many of them seem to be scared of going full-on EV, like the chinese. First they release somthing futuristic, then dial it back a bit to comfort the traditionalists - all while the chinese goes goes full spped ahead... I am currently driving a Renault Zoe - i wonder if there will be any valid european EVs to choose from, once I have to look for itäs replacement in 5 or so years...
Despite BYD being a relative unknown in Europe/UK, it's pricing is pretty unbeatable. I think the VW Group have been getting so much more expensive in recent times that they're shooting themselves in the foot.
and they are still way more expensive than China, even SE Asia... I think AUS and NZ also have better prices for BYD.
Blame VW's years of knuckle dragging before Dieselgate exposed them
Pricing and default equipment...
ID3 is 162,888-192,888 in China, which equvilents to 17,820-21,110 pounds.
@@johnsmith-cw3wo we have much better pricing, even better than the Kiwis.
you would have to take into account we have 10% GST where you have 20% VAT, we have a free trade agreement with China and you pay 10%, and we are lot closer for shipping.
Base model is $AUD 40,399 including on road cost, plus in Qld we get $AUD 6,000 EV rebate which is about £17,700
My wife has ordered the Pemium - 60 kWh battery, 150 kW motor version with panoramic sunroof $AUD 46,500 on the road minus the $6,000 EV rebate
which is about £20,800
i will choose Dolphin, blade LFP + heat pump + interior
@@hugocosta666 no I am from Shanghai, China
I have been driving the VW for more than 25 years. As far as I am aware, the Chinese have a significant advantage in terms of price and technology, particularly when it comes to batteries. Therefore, I am considering trying out a Chinese brand and based on that experience, I will make a decision about my future choices. It would be interesting to explore a new brand!

I go for BYD over NIO and Xpeng, cuz BYD has been manufacturing cars for decades
yangwang u8
battery alone i'll go for BYD as it uses LFP blade battery, where as ID3 uses LG chem Li ion... the most recalled battery in the world...
BYD LFP battery can be charged 100% full and drained to 0, giving you a longer range in real world
So can lithium ion though. It might not be the best idea for long term battery life but how often will people need to drive to zero percent. Once in a blue moon. Nothing against lfp, I think they're supposed to be safer too 👍
@@timscott3027 LFP also handles being left at full-charge better than other chemistries (NMC?), and you can charge to 100% daily (e.g. if you have a long commute, or drive for work, etc)
BYD LFP battery management does not handle well going below 5%.
Suddenly it shows empty, and goes to limp mode.... that can be fixed via software update, btw update how's that going on VW???😂😂 not good
Like people use that range of percentages in their daily lives.
LFP last much longer vs NCM in ID3. Expectation to have single digit % range loss after 100k miles. Unlike VW battery with recommended 🔋 operating range 20-80%, BYD LFP can be charged up to 100% daily.
Disadvantage of LFP - slower charge speeds when cold.
I vote BYD
BYD for me, think they have thrown down the gauntlet with legacy auto. If the traditional brands want to survive/thrive, they will likely need to take a hit on their pricing. That is the only thing that (IMO) will combat BYD's intergration into our car market. Especially in today's finace hit economy here in the UK.
Band them and force them to make them in Europe.
They're setting up factories in Europe now. But I don't think this is the point.
China is the base of Chinese brands' competitiveness:
Cheap n stable energy supply, efficent logistics network, lots of good educated workers, and so on.
China's gov is servicing for their people n economy, some govs are servicing for the elections.
@@tigerwild1164 It interesting that in some places in china the average wages are the same as the UKs. So that aspect of competition is fading away.
PPP vs. GDP. That's a big issue.

I imagine they will sell a tonne of those Dolphins across Europe, I have the Atto 3, and it's a super car. Build quality, drive, and tech, are all great, the infotainment screen is the best of those that I test-drove. Yes the DC charging is a little slower than some others but I charge 95% of the time at home so it's a nonissue for me.
BYD's new EVs are garnering a Tesla-like brand loyalty... because they tick so many boxes for the "average" driver. I too have the Atto 3 - for over a year now - and will upgrade to their Seal variant's SUV when it becomes available next year. I am thinking of the Dolphin for my wife (if we can get a decent trade-in on our Toyota) as she just needs a nicer "shopping cart" seeing she travels just 1000km/year on average.
@@remakeit2628look into the seagull when it gets released. They will have a variant with 102HP and 290 miles of range. It’s very small tho but for a city car it is kinda perfect size
@@remakeit2628 I actually hated BYD for launching the Dolphin. I'm currently driving the BMW i3 and nothing beats that in it's class (especially when i bought it used), since BYD launches the Dolphin with some promo offer, I'm selling the i3 back to the BMW dealer for very small amount of loss and collecting my Dolphin on Friday.
BYD for the win. That interior! Wow!
Thanks for the video. I realy like the BYD brand. I wouldnt call the VW ID3 more "grown up".
To me, for the VW the word "boring" is more befitting.
But for both, we will be waiting for a more sporty-like 2 door version.
Like 65% of the masses, we belong to the 1 or 2 person houshold and never had any use for 2 extra doors.
In China, that BYD is below $17.000. In the Netherlands the BYD is $32.000, almost double.
The VW ID3 is $45.000 in the Netherlands. . . . . . idiotic price for an entry level "Golf"
Best car of those, by far. . . . the BYD with the much better LFP batteries that have about double the life of the VW.
And with 30% cheaper it is a handsdown win for the BYD.
ID3在中国实际售价和海豚一样,不过销量不到海豚的5/1。大众在中国只能降价求生存😂
Having just sat in the Seal (not yet available for a test drive in Brisbane Australia) their 3.8S model exudes class and performance with stellar looks. Not sure why you want only 2 doors when this 4 door car is one of the fastest production cars in the world under AUD$70k.
I like the inspirational "Build Your Dreams" on the car. BYD is doing exactly that. They have been a company on a mission since inception, like Tesla. They have worked through many obstacles and are now on a good path to success.
I actually sat in the Dolphin at the fully charged show in Harrogate and was very impressed. Vastly better than the MG4, would be interesting to see what they are like to drive.
I drove the Atto3 at Farnborough and the regen braking was rubbish. if the Dolphin has the same regen braking I'd go for the MG4
@@gavkenny Yeah I probably would as well if it came to regen. I was thinking more in terms of interior quality,
@@gavkenny the regen is synced to the brake pedal.
It’s a clever way to keep the ice feel to those transitioning.
people have this superstition about one pedal driving and think other methods waste energy. with a byd if you step on the brake gentally you will only strengthen regen (look at the number on the left) and brake pad is not engaged. so don't hesitate to use the brake, you are not wasting energy if done right.
I've driven both. The Dolphin is a comfy family mover, gets the job done with great energy efficiency, has better interiors, but the MG4 just handles better.
The ID3 would be a great car, if it wasn’t for the price, the weight, the software and the haptic buttons…
not much left then ...
They will fix the screen and the software next year. This will get the one from id7.
If they manage to make it cheaper and add nice heatpump, people will buy id3
So basically it's a terrie car.😂
@@poxer1 That's good, what about the haptic buttons?
The haptics work very well once you own the car and use them regularly. They are better than an extra lever for cruise etc.
As for weight... it's not really heavy for what it is and it drives really really well.
Ginny and Nicola fantastic vlog , I would go for BYD myself , I feel VW have had it to good and now don’t really offer quality anymore
This is a great duo! You guys nailed it! The filming and the scenarios are on point and the jokes just complement an already well thought out review. Thank you for making my afternoon a brighter one.
I do have the ID 3 now with 125000 km (~80000 miles) on the odo. Looking away from the severe SW issues (they are not just bad they are catastrophic) the id 3 is a very nice solid and comfortable car.
But how on earth does VW expect to justify what is a 10k € price difference and much less equipment....
The LFP chemistry in BYD's car is much more robust and you don't need to limit your daily charging to 80%.
The batteries will last 3-5 times longer than in the VW. Yes they take a little longer to DC charge.. but....
I simply cannot see VW not reducing the id 3 cost with ~7k € and balance in equipment.... but I expect they will stubbornly and German-like wait until the market share is lost and the BYD brand has had touch down in the market.
id3 price in China 125,900 yuan (around $17,500) - BYD Dolphin price in China RMB 116,800 ($16,140) - way more reasonable price gap.
in their previous video, she said that BY dolphin has better charging curve, so it might charge even faster than ID3 - because this one has only in peak 120W
@@LittleBoobsLover also have standard heat pump... try charging in winter the id3. 😆
BYD Dolphin for me all the way. Currently own a BYD Atto 3, and I am so happy and impressed with it 🙂👍
We were promised lower pricing for EVs once volumes grew, yet prices have gone silly in the U.K. here’s hoping that BYD and others put the pressure on the established brands to make their prices more appealing.
EU is accusing Chinese selling EVs "too cheap" in Europe (although it's almost 50% more expensive than what they cost in China ), and trying to put a higher tax on them. Bad news for EU consumers.
my dolphin is 108,000 yuan adding 4000yuan insurance and no other tax(112,000yuan totally, Assuming the exchange rate is 7.30,about 15,342usd driving home) in china. Could you share your price to drive home in your contry?@@brian.z6592

I’m buying the byd hands down. I live in Canada so hopefully we can get them asap
I remember there is a BYD electric bus factory in Ontario. There are no signs of cars yet. Musk said that they will bring their parts suppliers to the United States to set up factories. If successful, BYD will likely enter the North American market. Because many of Tesla and BYD’s suppliers are the same.

The Dolphin is awesome! We have an Atto 3 which is the bigger model BYD, and we love it. But sitting in the Dolphin, it just feels so much better.
Ginny and Nicola are two of my favourite presenters on UA-cam. So entertaining and informative. Keep up the great work.
Our experience of VW build quality and dealerships has completely us off the brand. Multiple dealerships near us (different franchises) basically refused to offer test drives in the id3, one even cancelling a test drive as it had 1 other booked before it so wouldn't have enough battery left. Several ICE VWs in our family have recently had major mechanical issues, with dealerships taking up to 6 weeks before they will even run a diagnostic scan on the car to identify what is causing a fault light. I can't see us running back to VW anytime soon.
Nice presentation by both ladies. Someone already mentioned that we would be interested in how many dealers will BYD have, and location. More importantly, what will the depreciation be, in comparison, and what discounts will buyers be able to get off the new car prices?
BYD. Ahead on tech, more affordable, they got rid of “the build your dreams” sillyness across the back. Not to mention VW’s tarnished emissions reputation… love the dynamic between Nichola & Ginny, Fun VLOG… x
Yes, with new treatment, they have mostly managed to hide the stench of slave labour, organ harvesting and brutal dictatorship
BYD Dolphin looks cool , yet another car that US market would love.
I have always really loved the exterior look of the ID.3. However, VW really took their eye off the ball with interior design and quality. They panicked and launched before all the bugs were fixed, hoping that the VW name would be enough. Sadly, now, due to the recent price cuts across the whole VW brand, it just wasn't enough. If they admitted defeat and redesigned the interior and did a whole new launch admitting to customers they didn't get it right 1st time round, then I think the whole ID range cud do really well for VW. (However they will never do this) this means where VW used to be a bench mark its now playing catch up with most brands, including Chinese models and being a child of the 80s and 90s i never thought I would say that.
Already book the BYD Dolphin 👍🏼. Very nice entry level ev car for starters.
Really enjoyed this video, what a great comparison between 2 similar cars. The BYD looks better value for money and I feel for a lot of people thats all thats going to matter as EV's loose so much within 3 years from new. My ID3 lost 40% of its purchase price within 2 years (!), so I am not buying an overpriced VW again, BYD have the Denza 9 with 7 seats coming soon which is similar to the ID Buzz but VW have still not released the 7 seat version (huge mistake) guess which one I waiting for?
EV depreciate fast because newer models get better fast. with ICE you don't see much change in 10 years. but as ev gets more popular, ICE will depreciate faster too.
The BYD interior looks vastly better in grey than it did in Lilac.
Nnah
Ι drove BYD Dolphin and it has every thing I search and wish a new car to have....... The interior and the comfort of the riding is uper level.... The screen is tesla like..... If it had a better face and profile I would have bought it yesterday..... Now maybe I will wait for a face lift or other small model...... But my next car will be BYD.
The initial selling price of Volkswagen ID3 in China was 170,000 CNY (22,000 EUR), but they found that Chinese people did not consider European cars at all when buying pure electric cars. If Chinese people want to buy electric cars, there are many Chinese brand cars. You can choose, but later Volkswagen had to reduce the price to sell ID3, and the price dropped to 120000CNY (15000EUR) before there were very few sales!
China is the world's largest automobile consumer market, and it is also the largest electric vehicle market. Competition among Chinese brands is very fierce. Tesla's most entry-level model in China, Model 3, only sells for 220,000 CNY (30,000 USD, 28,000 EUR). It was even higher than this price before. High, if the price is not lowered, few consumers in China will choose it! A few years ago, Chinese people even had to pay a premium to buy Japanese cars. Today, it has become a joke , because Chinese car brands are so competitive. If the prices of European cars, American cars, and Japanese cars are not reduced, no one will buy them. . Today, China's electric vehicle market already has vehicles equipped with 100kw/h batteries with a range of more than 1000 kilometers. Huawei's 600kw charging piles have begun to be deployed, and charging one kilometer in one second has become a reality.
The future electric vehicle market will be dominated by Chinese brands. Only by supporting China and supporting Chinese cars can people around the world drive high-quality and low-priced electric vehicles!
It would be the BYD Dolphin all day long , with one caveat , how widespread are their Dealerships going to be
Remember how Hyundai and Kia started out?
As someone who is older and had become accustomed to certain creature comforts with the changes in cost of living for me the BYD would likely take my money out of these two if I could justify changing. The current Skoda Enyaq (possibly more Volkswaggonny than the VW) is currently my front runner for an EV though. It's not cheap but the dealership that I've known for over a decade have been very good. I'm not in a position to change to the charger yet so plenty of time to evaluate other options. A great informative channel folks. Keep up the great work
If you do a bit of math, see if the monthly running costs are within your budget. Petrol cost vs electricity. Oil changes, etc. My Leaf has only seen a dealer for tire rotations and soon the brake fluid.
7:39 “…given it’s designers more than 20 quid.” Ouch 😂
Thank you, Ladies, for a brilliant vlog! BYD for me.
Ginny "it doesn't crash all the time like the old one does" - please can you not spread false tropes about the ID3 infotainment? Ours has done 18000 miles and only ever crashed once. All that took to fix was a straightforward reset of the infotainment screen (hold button for 10-15 seconds) and it was back up. It works really well since the software update last November and is indeed virtually the same as a new car. It's ludicrous to review any ID3 now - even a 1st edition - in the context of the software when the car very first came out.
Also, it has cupholders in the centre armrest?
Bit of a piss take review really. I actually really liked the Dolphin when I sat in it at Fully Charged but the way you talk down the ID3 and give so many false impressions means I just can't trust what you say about it.
I can't get over the headlights of the Dolphin. They make the nose look ... shrunk? That and the motivational quote in the back, but other than that very nice looking piece
When I looked inside the ID.3, a question popped in my head "Why do they mount a dashboard in the middle?"
Thank you for the video. I love the channel ❤
I would like to point out a couple of things: first, as many other UK channels that have international audiences, you could provide the range and specs in both: international and imperial units.
Second, driving a Tesla, these cars are technology. My parents own an ID4, and the software is abhorrent. Reviews and comparisons should get into features, navigation, etc. Does it have Spotify? Voice recognition? How good or bad is the driving assistance? Is the phone app any good? Etc. I would not buy a VW just because of the OS and the useless app. Reviews should give this info to get the full picture.
in China , Dolphin's price is just half compare with Model3. So `````

Vw rubbish dealer service puts me off for any vw product. But you're videos are always great. It's Baaaam!
Bit of a no brainer for the Dolphin particularly here in Australia where it starts at 20K GBP.
2 different cars are different from each other😂, I think you can’t ignore the Cupra Born, a more rounded ID3 for £5k less. The Smart #1, Renault Megane, FIAT 600 and Jeep Avenger are also very good options.
Where do you go if you have a problem with your BYD? Are there dealers in the UK?
Wait dor long-term engine and battery deprecation and value counts vw vs byd
I was fortunate to drive the Dolphin for over 15,000 km before purchasing the VW ID 3. I won't comment on the appearance, as it's a matter of personal taste. In terms of performance, suspension, long-term reliability, handling, braking system, noise and vibration, battery performance, build quality, and supply chain reliability, the ID 3 excels. The Dolphin, however, surpasses in software and UI, offering a more cost-effective maintenance experience.
Living in China, I've owned both vehicles. The ID 3's interior feels more plastic-like and cheaper but conveys the sensation of owning a car. In contrast, the Dolphin's interior, though less plastic-like, resembles a toy. After 15,000 km, the Dolphin began to show signs of wear and tear, with interior design covers easily damaged. I noticed clear noises when driving on uneven roads, likely due to poor sealing, but this wasn't an issue with the VW even after 25,000 km.
I personally prefer the Dolphin's display dashboard and entertainment system over the ID 3's, which I believe is the car's only advantage. I personally recommend only ID3.
The dolphin is brilliant. Have to wait to win the lottery before I can buy one🙄.
"The ID3's interior is less Ryanair than in the earlier version"... eheh that was lovely! The whole video was informative and quite funny.
Regarding the BYD Dolphin overall price/specs/quality, it seems like a tough nut to crack for legacy makers... and then there will come the Seagull...
Personally I quite liked the Dolphin's interior design. Very nice, it could belong to a Mini!
As a life time VAG owner , I can say the BYD looks like a contender. ID3 is nice, Tesla has the brand notoriety, Polestar is up there also. But all have a price tag that puts many off. The BYD if it actually comes in at the prices stated, it will sell well.
I don't agree with this but many will be happy to know that BYD will be dropping the "Build Your Dreams" from for all models except the Atto 3 in most of Europe
The BYD Dolphin is an example of VW's self sabotage (as well as other established western brands like Toyota)
BYD's rise was born out of serious R&D for batteries and electrification of Buses, industrial, commercial and eventually private transport.
We think Tesla is a head of the game but BYD, Cheri, Geely and more have affordable, accessible electric (and PHEV) options that aren't chasing the same premium crossiver dead end like it's 2008 again
If VW knew its worth they better start on making that ID.2, and an ID.1 like new Lupo or improving the e-UP. Or that fabled 1L microcar they always greenwashed to sell Turbo Diesels.
The wider German economy will depends on it.
Thank you so much... I wish VW would have a look at the 'poll' results in the comments. In 2023 we should be having nice car interiors.
Cars developed for the chinese market first have one common issue, their fast charging isnt that fast as the chinese standard seems to have a 80kW limit.
Compare with another now chinese brand, but born in europe ;the polestar2 charges at 200kW.
Very slow top speed as well vs other evs. Often limited to below 100mph.
To be fair, where in the UK can you open up to 100 mph? Nowadays, I'm always seem to be stuck behind drivers going 10miles under the speed limit, 30 instead 40, 40 instead of 50 etc
Not true. BYD has a model currently selling in China now that charges at the speed of 280 kw. Every 5 minutes of charge gets you 150 km.
Btw, the fastest charging EV in China is X Peng, 480 kw, 5 minutes get you 200 km.
The ID3 Makeover is now the new VW Golf ( E ) Electric 😊
I take the BYD please just for the price & warranty 👍
The Dutch bus-company Keolis had big problems last year with their new Byd-busses. A representative of the employees even sent a letter to the European executive of Byd....
i thought the ide had smart charging?
BYD Dolphin has flat Charging curve and go 100% faster than id3
I think that the new colours on the new ID.3 look really good and are a lot better than the insipid colours that were on the old one. Unfortunately BYD have gone for the insipid colour look and will hopefully add some better colours. When I was buying a new car in 2002, the choice was narrowed down to a Honda Jazz and the Ford Fiesta. The Jazz had insipid colours as well and it was one of the reasons for buying the Fiesta. I ended up with the 1.6 Fiesta Ghia in dark metallic green and it looked really good.
I pick BYD every day.
Unfortunately, we probably will never have a Chinese made EV in the United States.
Heat pump is a must in an ev ?
Nice review, thanks! Since I would have (in both cases) to deal with monthly Installments for the purchase, I prefer the solidity of Volkswagen!
Because you have not EV yet.
Once you did it, you won’t want to drive petrol car anymore.
Vw and Germany car has a good reputation on exterior design. But this competition, byd beat id3 no doubt.
BYD has LFP battery. Safety first.
Funny thing is that I did find out a while back that having a cathedral did not make you a city. But I still call towns with cathedrals cities. Even when I know it’s wrong. I live in a city that is a city; it has a cathedral, was one of the first Roman settlements in Britain (Noviomagus Reginorum), was a “Burh”, is a County Town with a City Council and had a castle once. But a city without a cathedral doesn’t feel like a city somehow….
I hate the attitude of companies like VW - fixing the unlit sliders, larger screens etc coming as on their other iD models, but not yet, still got old stock to use up... So they're telling their potential customers "Don't buy it yet" then.
Please find out who is VW's battery supplier? I am not surprised if it is CATL.
Hi Nicola, how are you? My name is Alexandre, I live in Brazil, I would like to know how Byd Dolphin plus is accepted in your country. How long has it been released there? Do you think it's worth going from a Volkswagen TCross 1.4 to a Dolphin plus? Thanks
Optional pano roof is only a good thing though. Not everyone wants that
Still holding back for the BYD seagull which is pretty much the more affordable option
How about a 3-way head to head: ID.3, EX30, BYD
Could also add the Smart #1 and MG4 and whilst your at it the Cupra Born - loads of cars now in the same sector vying for peoples money. Looking forward to the EX30 :)
I don't know why this wasnt a 3 way Vs with the MG4
I believe the MG4 press cars are quite hard for journalists to get their hands on at the moment.
any crash test report to compare both? esp BYD brand
Well the predictions are coming true - we have said for years that unless the legacy manufacturers sort themselves out and deliver value, they will be trampled in the rush for the keys of cars like the BYD. VW really stuffed up with the ID range (Buzz poss exception) and the ID 2 is too far away. Screwing the public for options that come as standard with competitors is the final insult. I hope they survive the invasion but the signs are not good.
Also the Build Your Dreams badge on the rear will be removed for UK cars as BYD bow to our normal weather like attitude x
I read that this applies to all BYDs bar the Dolphin as the rear badge is part of the light bar. BYD is a much better name/logo tho.
Will they? Gosh I hope they do remove it also here in Norway, it's just embarrassing!
BYD is definitely the new VW. Politically well connected party sponsored industries that subsequently gets an international market 😜
Price first. Which one is cheaper and green ?
BYD, cheaper, better looking exterior, better looking interior, more tech and no need to tick the extras boxes...... VW are surely going to lose that battle. My next car will be...... one with an ICE 😂
Even if they're the same price, I'd still pick byd on the battery and interior alone. Vw is exactly as said "boring". The interior is where you spend the most of your time so I'd say interior is by far more important than exterior
agree!
BYD is the winner. Better Software, Better Battery, Better extras package, Better price, Better infotainment system, Better interior. And we are speaking about much better.
This is why VW already closed 3 factories in Germany last month and selling with 0% apr with no success. BYD is the largest battery powered cars manufacturer in the world.
I'm sorry VW. It got a BYD already and I love it.
I am convinced there are robots with non programmable brains whispering to decision makers telling them that piano black is good and improves the perceived perception of luxury in cars. (They are and will be forever wrong)
What's the byd support infrastructure like in the UK compared to VW?
Btw you state that the ID3 doesn't have cup holders in the rear, actually it does pull down the centre arm rest , not all of it just the first bit and they are in it
"it's a small car it's not running for president" 😂😂😂
like to see women talks about cars and their knowledge is spot on. kudos and yes, I am to quite excited about Dolphine. might want to check it out soon...
A good report ladies. But . . . how about kW and Nm per tonne? Acceleration claims 0-100kph? I read somewhere that the base Dolphin only has 70kW engine and takes over 12 seconds to do 0-100kph. We don't get VW EVS in Australia yet except the Cupra.
BTW, excluding subsidies the Dolphin starts at $38890 AUD or equivalent of about £19000.
I own the BYD Atto3 and just love it. Top spec model here costs $51000 AUD or £25500 before any subsidies.
90% of new cars are bought on pcp, which is effectively based on the depreciation, not the retail price. Then consider the dealer network and access to spares.
Haha, no one is driving a car called a 'Seagul' with 'Build Your Dreams' scrolled across the back of it! 😂
I disagree, and byd have said they will be removing the lettering from UK cars going forward (which I personally think is a bit sad that people here are so snooty about having a happy, if cheesy, slogan on a car, it would make me smile when I saw it)
Two wonderfully likeable presenters. I wonder though would it have been better to wait until the BYD could have been driven beside the ID3. For a long time VW set the benchmark for quality. Buyers were happy to pay a bit extra for them due to that image. They need to get back to that quickly before these Chinese brands eat into their market share and they might never recover that once cherished brand loyalty.
That ID3 interior is still fairly "basic" looking. And kinda boring.
Which is a shame because the front styling is cool AF.
Another entertaining review. I'm with Nicola - Volkswagenny is definitely not a word but, since it's instantly understandable, maybe it should be.
I'd definitely go for the BYD. VW have dropped the EV ball so badly that they will need to either drastically cut price or dramatically improve their equipment in order to compete.
One last little nitpick, it would be nice to have prices rather then the difference, and BYD have already announced they're not having "Build Your Dreams" on the back of any UK cars.
I do not understand BYD’s pricing strategy to date, an unknown Chines brand charging as much as makers people are very familiar with. The Dolphin is much more competitively priced than the Atto 3. Starting at £25,490 before the inevitable discounts, they might actually sell some.
I think byd dealers priced their cars to sell what they have for europe, which is not a lot. when the supply become more they will adjust prices.
@@qilu2004 surely BYD sets the list prices. If they handed pricing power to their dealers, it is just another mistake
@@bill_heywood that is dealership works in US and europe. byd needs to work with dealers to get into a market. maybe they should do direct sale like tesla does but that brings more overhead cost.
@@qilu2004 it is not how Polestar have done it and I think they have much better control over how their cars are sold. Direct sales, a handful of showrooms, seems a lot more efficient than using dealers
BYD is selling well in Australia after Tesla. Having V2L and cheaper price are good selling points. Tesla still have the better software, driving experience and reliable charging network. Space wise I was surprised with the Dolphin but being front wheel drive with cheap tires that come with them I did lose tracking a couple times when test driving it.
