I took notes for us☺️ 1) Register your business (LLC or corporation) 2) Register with IRS (SSN for business) 3) Create business bank account (credit union preferred) 4) Bookkeeping Your Expenses (Quickbooks recommended) 5) Create Business Email (can customize later) 6) Content Marketing Plan (Advertising) 7) Build a website (Wix, Weebly, Square space recommended) 8)Trademark your business (the TM symbol)
TRADEMARK TIP I WANTED TO SHARE FROM MY LAWYER TEACHER: I just wanted to share this for those who are starting out and want to direct their budget on something they find more important, because registering a trademark can be quite pricey! I had an instructor who was a lawyer for intellectual property (legal stuff so you don't get sued for your work) and she teaches a class on that exact subject in the college I went to. She mentioned that you DO NOT have to pay to trademark your logo, because once you create it, it's your work. So, in order to protect yourself from someone else taking your logo, you can simply add the TM symbol next to it and you're good to go! Now, if you want to make it registered trademark THEN you can go ahead and pay that fee, and the symbol would then be changed to the R symbol.
Yalethia Lee That’s a fair comment, I just wanted to share that as a possibility for the people who might want to put more focus on getting started. At the end of the day, you work is your work, and someone steals that from you registered or not, you can always take it to court with the proof that you were the one that created it first. Again, this is information coming from a licensed professional, but I see where you’re coming from. Kind of like what happened with the man who created automated windshield wipers. Ford claimed they invented it first, but in reality he invented it and eventually won the lawsuit. For some people getting their business started and fully functioning is more important than paying to register a logo, but I 100% agree with you in the sense that it’s recommended to make the investment early to prevent possible theft of artwork. Thanks for your input!
Mjé Of course! I still have a long way to go when it comes to intellectual property, but i’m always willing to help and receive feedback whenever possible!
The people who deserve to go far are the people who are not selfish with the knowledge they have acquired from their journey, and are willing to pass on the information. Thank you for this beautiful information! I will be using this video as a checklist as I go. I pray you continued Peace and Success!

God really sent your video to me, I have been wondering the steps I need to take to start my business and I haven’t started out of fear because I didn’t know what to do, I have been asking and some people only want to give bits and pieces but you gave me everything I need to know and I appreciate all information you have shared. k0p I don’t think this comment is really called for. There is so much information out there that sometimes it is possible to feel overwhelmed. Everyone prioritizes these steps differently and many entrepreneurs also follow so many different variations of these steps. What benefit is there in giving such a negative comment when you don’t even know the person or what they’ve done or are dealing with? Maybe try encouragement or, better yet, if you don’t have anything nice to say, silence is just as useful.

Wow, I remember watching this last year when I first tried starting a business, but at the time I didn't understand the full gravity and importance of these steps because the excitement wasn't honed in on building this important foundation. Fast forward to two years later and this video comes up at a time where I'm ready to do what it takes to make this business actually happen (and almost on the exact date that this video came out). So thank you for making this, it was actually what a needed at the time that I needed it!

You are sharing a WEALTH of information that a lot of channels fail to tackle! Love it. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into this video to help a ton of other people on their way. BTW, your makeup looks incredible!
Great video very informative! 1. Some states/counties/parishes require occupational licenses 2. Some states require registration for sales/use tax at the state and local level
What she didn’t say was that these things cost lots of money upfront. So be sure to count the cost and save up the capital before getting up excited. Trademarks cost around $3,000. Registering with the state costs around $225. A good social media advertising budget is around $500 (especially on Instagram or Facebook). A general advertising budget outside of social media can cost around $3,000-$8,000 minimum. Don’t let her sell you dreams. It’s attainable but do research. Also, what she didn’t mention was the importance of a business P.O. Box if you are working from a home office. Also, the necessity of a home office when you are in the first 5-10 years. Great advice … but lots of holes left for you to fall through in the delivery.
omg thank you thank you for this video...I have listened to tons of podcasts, and other videos that just always talk about themselves and how they got started etc...this gets straight to the point and involves real steps that we need to take ....this was so so helpful.
Very nice content and advice. One thing I would also recommend as a #9 thing to do, Business Insurance. It's actually inexpensive and it can save you a huge expense if you find yourself in a position where someone wants to sue you for something you or an employee did or said.
I love that you mentioned the first 3 things. I created my domain name, email, website and social media accounts and called it starting a business. I never thought about the LLC nor doing what I have to do with the IRS.
OMG!!!! you're a Great Teacher straight out of a Business School! I just felt the Bonding you tried to create unknowingly....I neded those words of Utter Wisdom, that PUSH to Do Something....Thank You so Much!!!!! you're Lovely...
Thank you for this information 💜 my business launches in 22 days and I felt like I have had so much to do, and hearing this from someone else and knowing I have almost everything done on this list is a great feeling! Thank you again!
Generational knowledge that can help others is what you just provided we at Jamaica Ave Grill would like to wish you nothing but success in all your business ventures
Thank you so much for this" too the point" and organized video. So many other UA-camrs are chatty, unprofessional and just look ghetto. I love to see a sister claiming her spot in the world. All the best to you. Your information was so vital and your video was so easy to watch. Thank You!
Took the words right out of my mouth ! Been searching for someone I can actually watch without over talking or every 10 second hair flip and lip popping 😒
How does someone look ghetto? You don’t have to down talk others to prove your point. Those same people had enough courage and information to share what they know. Woman, especially black woman, need to stop tearing each other down. It’s disgusting.
Hi Erin. Just wanted to say how much I enjoy and appreciate your content. So valuable and actionable and well designed. And your accent is so cute. I'll be launching my new UA-cam channel this month and it's largely because of you! Wishing you tons of success this year!
This video was EXACTLY what I was looking for! Thank you so much for sharing your invaluable experience. You are now officially a cornerstone for my families exciting new journey.
Just stubble across and yes thank you for validation!!! I just started a business and creating is the fun part of it but the REAL business side is WORK. Thanks for breaking that part down. Because I learned real quick the difference between business or hustle. I think a lot of people think social media is just posting pics etc. This is a big disclosure that is quiet. I feel if your paying for any kind of marketing looking for potential customers your a business. All business are open ,marketing, having sales etc it not whenever you want extra cash. It's day in and day out. Mad props to ALL who are striving to this direction.
Thanks a bunch. I followed these steps a few months ago and created a small biz for a friend of mine. I'm working on one now for my son as 18th bday gift. Thanks and keep up the good work. Yo people here for it!!
“You change your instagram name and think that’s your business name...uh uh boo” 😂 It’s the little things you mentioned that are the gems. Thank you 😌🙌🏽
1:44 // don’t be out here saying you gotta business on Instagram, that ain’t a business boo boo. 😂😭🤣 *currently starting my binge watching of your YT videos after I found your channel last night* lol 🔥
I keep writing down what I need to do to get started because I love organizing but I need to start executing. Can you make a video one day on procrastination when it comes to being your own boss and setting your own schedule and actually holding yourself accountable? New subscriber and o think I’ve binged watched all your videos already lol 🥰💕
You are an angel! After starting to build & then putting a hold on my business because of the many road blocks and confusion, this video was so informative and refreshing. The internet is over-saturated with info but you made it cut and dry. Thanks for your help. Could you do an in-depth video on the different taxes, license and permits that are required? More tax filing information and also a list of great wholesalers?
THANK YOU! I’ve watched so many videos saying they will explain step by step how to start a biz and they never get to the point or the actual real life steps! This is the best video I’ve seen on this topic! I’m following you now!
I had to like without second thoughts when she said “c’mere let me tell you somethin’. Social media does not count as your website. OKAY.” 😂 yes sis. The truth be told.
Thank you I’m starting a business and you basically gave me a extra push and I appreciate that, I’m greatful hope I’m able to launch and shout u out for helping me BABYGIRL, keep pushing..
This video helped me so much! I am a 20 year old photographer who did not know a THING about the business side of things! Thanks so much for this video!
Great tips, love your videos, delivery style, and enthusiasm! Just wanted to offer one helpful note, after you mentioned the costs associated with clothing for your channel. I’m not a tax professional (for the record:)). But for anyone who does their own bookkeeping and or taxes, I would just be extremely cautious about writing off any deductions for “clothing,” (specifically), as it can be a red flag/ trigging an IRS audit. From what I understand/ (have been personally advised), even though clothing passes the “ordinary and necessary” rule when deciding wether or not the expense is a reasonable deduction for schedule C.... Well, you know the IRS, and in this case, they’ve gone out of their way to further define or rather, constrain us, in making it rarely deductible. Unless it’s part of a uniform, or something that one would where “nowhere else but work.” Entertainers can deduct the cost of “theatrical costumes and accessories” as long as “they’re not suitable for everyday wear” It’s deductible if it’s: protective wear (like a hard hat or work gloves, special performance footwear), something you are required to wear as a condition of your employment/ or profession such as a uniform or scrubs, promotional wear (like a shirt with your logo printed on it), a “costume” which strictly means- it passes the test of whether or not you’d be able to wear it in public/ outside of the business. To boil it down: if one can potentially wear the clothing on the street, then it’s nondeductible. Even if you invested in clothing that you had planned to wear specifically and exclusively for filming, or you buy a suit intended for wearing once at a speaking event, the IRS considers the costs “nondeductible,” because “it could be worn on the street/ outside of a workplace.” I’m not giving legal advice, as I’m just a small business owner, and of course everyone should do their own research/ homework for their situation, or read the IRS publications/ consult a tax attorney, CPA or trusted professional. I would highly recommend visiting the small business-self employed section of the IRS. gov website, as they have an online learning tool for small businesses there, not all that exciting, but still a free resource for those searching for tax info or help understanding what is and is not deductible :)
Incredible video, Erin! I recently launched my own business in February and did the all things as you recommended except Trademark the business name -- didn't even think about that! The fact you include a vendor list in your description is super helpful too, I plan on reaching out to LaConya for some help on the trademark. Keep up the great content, looking forward to more! -A new subscriber
I love listening to your videos bright and early. Gets me motivated! "You don't get that time back, just do it." I needed to hear that today. Keep posting!
I am impressed with your points that are direct and simplistic. I'm a 66 year spin instructor that has found a pleasure in teaching spin classes. The decision to venture has been put in place. I have my LLC, EIN, city business license, business checking account, website, and business email. The business plan is my challenge. This is a small residential business of 10 bikes. I have contacted SBDC. Suggestions on credible business marketers to assist in creating a business plan.
This information was right on time for me! I am in the beginning stages of starting my own beauty brand, and I was trying to figure out where to start. I am so glad I came across your video. This was so helpful! Thank You!!!!
This helped me out a lot. You were clear and kept it simple enough for me to understand and follow. A lot of other UA-camrs say the same thing like you but they add a lot of extra information that just confuses me.
Register your business , registered tax, business back account,, track money flow (quick books), business email, marketing plan, business website, trade mark.... How are you going to keep your customers? Thank you for this great information
FINALLY! I'm so glad I found your account. This is the information I was looking for when starting a business. I wish I would have seen yours a few months ago when I had to figure it all out myself. Thank you for this precious gem.
Hey Erin, I want to preface this by saying I really enjoy the type of content you're putting out. I have one small complaint in that I think you might want to consider adding a de-esser to your audio because there are a lot of high "ssss" sounds that are piercing with headphones on. Again, I really enjoy the information and want your content to be as good as it can be thanks. God bless!
This was awesome . All the video I’ve been trying to look at was missing this information and I was so relieved to come across your video. Thank you so much . ❤
Hi! My upcoming book is all on tips to starting and growing a business and about how I became a Beverly Hills Boss! Check out my most recent video for more.
Thanks a lot for these tips. I have done about three of the points you suggested and some others are being processed but your video helped me realize that I'm on the right track. Thanks again.
Hello, thanks for sharing! For one who is just starting out is it wise to get an LLC or try the business out as a sole proprietor at first? Keep up the great work!
I cant wait to reopen by business full time. Im relocating and Ima need your Mom. ♡♡ IM bac in Minnesota. Ow but I do miss the D, What up Doe!! Lol Tha is for the tips.
Do we have to wait to make expenses for the business until after it's established? What if I bought expenses on my personal account, but want to write them off for my business come tax season? (Amazing & informative video btw thank you!!!!!!!)
Erin, I've literally been trying to find a straight to the point video that details all the BEFORE components.. THANK YOU! Many "how to start a business" videos start with marketing, website creation, xyz.. and skips all the key before pieces. You crushed this.. so comprehensive. Happy Monday!
Thank you so much! That tip about the trademark was especially helpful cuz I was stressed when I say th prices on that BUT would make a great Business Goal/Milestones to look forward to in early stages
What a great video and I love how clear and professional you were without rambling about pointless and time consuming things that don't have anything to do with the subject matter of the video title. So many people ramble and carry on about nonsense or things that shouldn't even be in the video. Thank you for staying on track and to the point. To keep yourself from losing track of where you were in a presentation mark a content draft quickly on the side of where you are so your eyes will know where to return like a highlighter mark or something easy and bright to the eyes to not break eye contact for too long. Amazing quality in you my dear. May the Almighty God of Yisrael bless you and help you because you helped me. In Jesus Name AMEN
I took notes for us☺️

Persephani-Monét yes I do! it’s jjpina@alumni.fullsail.edu

Have you guys noticed that :
eating out is very difficult and expensive.
in an area, typically,
you might find an outlet selling pizza,
you might sometimes find a restaurant in which meals are quite expensive,
and that's it.
Here you barely have : very few foods, and they are expensive
You can eat almost nothing,
Do you guys see ?
This model is very inefficient
Eating out is nearly impossible
Something is definitely missing
it is : a restaurant where food keeps changing, food changes every day
Chefs also rotate
A meal is going to be cheap
You get new foods every day. After a period of time : you will have eaten thousands of foods
Do you see the difference now ?
This model is way better
Eating out will finally become possible.

How does someone look ghetto? You don’t have to down talk others to prove your point. Those same people had enough courage and information to share what they know. Woman, especially black woman, need to stop tearing each other down. It’s disgusting.
Exactly!
You made this so straightforward. I love itttt!!! Thank youuu Queen ♥️
Thanks Cynthia!! xo E
Great video! Love seeing our people helping our people.
here it is, the list I've always wanted. God Bless you
Thanks a bunch. I followed these steps a few months ago and created a small biz for a friend of mine. I'm working on one now for my son as 18th bday gift. Thanks and keep up the good work. Yo people here for it!!
congrats on 10K!! I love seeing you grow, your channel is awesome!
JonellSequiraXO almost 70k now! 👏🏽
I love the time piece that you implemented at the end that was super wise and encouraging!
“You change your instagram name and think that’s your business name...uh uh boo” 😂
It’s the little things you mentioned that are the gems. Thank you 😌🙌🏽
Respect. Thank you. DUALY NOTED: pay it foward moment.
Omggg when I tell you I needed this!! I'm giving you a virtual hug right now . Just subscribed!❤️❤️
Wow this might be the most useful video I have ever seen.
Wow! This is an amazing compliment! Thanks for watching! xx
1:44 // don’t be out here saying you gotta business on Instagram, that ain’t a business boo boo. 😂😭🤣 *currently starting my binge watching of your YT videos after I found your channel last night* lol 🔥
AND "Instagram is NOT your website." 🤣 I love this lady! Good luck to you👍
coralie santiago 😂 that part got me
GIRL!!! I love your vibe... The shoutout to momma for her business was heart felt. Thank you for all the info.....
She is so animated I freaking love it !! “Social media does not count as a website” 😂 I’m subscribed !!!
Life can be cruel, I understand. Take it for what it’s worth, life it’s a gift from God. All good things come from Him!
Her energy and vibe is great and really helps you focus and remember what she is saying. Keep it up queen.
Kayla Elease omg this is me procrastination is my biggest enemy
This is called "analysis paralysis."
FOR ME PROCRATINATION COMES FROM THE FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN.
I wish I had this list before I rushed to launch my online business years ago. Had to sub!
Wow, this video was worthy of my time. U Rock Erin. Looking forward to your NEXT video
This was helpfulllll !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I know where to start 🥺😭👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 I could cry right now .
Thank you I’m starting a business and you basically gave me a extra push and I appreciate that, I’m greatful hope I’m able to launch and shout u out for helping me BABYGIRL, keep pushing..
I love that we are actually out here making it happen! This is amazing!
This video helped me so much! I am a 20 year old photographer who did not know a THING about the business side of things! Thanks so much for this video!
I just started my real estate company, so I appreciate the content marketing plan reminder.
Omg I'm doing my research to build a foundation for my business ..very informative info!
Unless it’s part of a uniform, or something that one would where “nowhere else but work.” Entertainers can deduct the cost of “theatrical costumes and accessories” as long as “they’re not suitable for everyday wear”
It’s deductible if it’s: protective wear (like a hard hat or work gloves, special performance footwear), something you are required to wear as a condition of your employment/ or profession such as a uniform or scrubs, promotional wear (like a shirt with your logo printed on it), a “costume” which strictly means- it passes the test of whether or not you’d be able to wear it in public/ outside of the business.
To boil it down: if one can potentially wear the clothing on the street, then it’s nondeductible.
Even if you invested in clothing that you had planned to wear specifically and exclusively for filming, or you buy a suit intended for wearing once at a speaking event, the IRS considers the costs “nondeductible,” because “it could be worn on the street/ outside of a workplace.”
I’m not giving legal advice, as I’m just a small business owner, and of course everyone should do their own research/ homework for their situation, or read the IRS publications/ consult a tax attorney, CPA or trusted professional. I would highly recommend visiting the small business-self employed section of the IRS. gov website, as they have an online learning tool for small businesses there, not all that exciting, but still a free resource for those searching for tax info or help understanding what is and is not deductible :)
I spent a week watching these videos, writing everything down and creating the jewelry I plan on making. Even in school I wasn't that productive :')

So glad this was helpful for you!! LaConya is AMAZING. She will get you all the way together. She specializes in business law. xo E
Hi definitely new to all of this. How would I contact Laconya?
Chyna Doll contact info is in the description box
I love listening to your videos bright and early. Gets me motivated! "You don't get that time back, just do it." I needed to hear that today. Keep posting!
Did your mom ever start her bookkeeping business?
right because i need her... ASAP lol
@@millj1962 I need her as well for the Book keeping
@@kaeoguin6676 I provide bookkeeping services
same question here :(
Wondering the same
I am impressed with your points that are direct and simplistic.
Straight to the point.
Great video sis...much needed! Love your aesthetic & appreciate your professionalism💕
Girrrllllll I was just thinking Michigan first! So glad to find so many successful michigan women on here ❤❤❤❤
I would include the costs involved because it’s a little more than time. Other than that, this is a great video!
Register your business , registered tax, business back account,, track money flow (quick books), business email, marketing plan, business website, trade mark....
How are you going to keep your customers?
Thank you for this great information
OMG thank you for this I'm in the process of starting a business and really appreciate videos like this!!! Keep the tips coming girl!!
k0p 🌽
Thank you for taking the time for this video. Your video explains everything from the beginning to the end. Thank you so much.
Erin, you recommended using a credit union and I yelled out, "yasss girl" right on the middle of my workout.
It’s like you know I want to start this business! ❤️ Thank you !
Hi! My upcoming book is all on tips to starting and growing a business and about how I became a Beverly Hills Boss! Check out my most recent video for more.
Thank you so much for this! SO informative!!
Launching a business can be really overwhelming! This video is extremely helpful. Love it ❤️
Thanks a lot for these tips. I have done about three of the points you suggested and some others are being processed but your video helped me realize that I'm on the right track. Thanks again.
I’ll be contacting your mother for my book Keeping!! ❤️
Thanks for laying this out so simply and clearly. So many of these tip videos give a bunch of info that doesn’t pertain to every business.
Hello, thanks for sharing! For one who is just starting out is it wise to get an LLC or try the business out as a sole proprietor at first? Keep up the great work!
Thank you! Much needed info. I love the Basics because when you don't know where to start, you must start somewhere!
I’m so glad I discovered your channel! Awesome content 💕
Thank you so much! Welcome to my internet home :) xo E
This. Is. What. I. Have. Been. Looking. For.
Thank you for this content ! Life saver !!
I cant wait to reopen by business full time. Im relocating and Ima need your Mom. ♡♡ IM bac in Minnesota. Ow but I do miss the D, What up Doe!! Lol Tha is for the tips.
I’ve been so lost on where to start. Th k you for laying this out
Do we have to wait to make expenses for the business until after it's established?
This was very helpful! I'd love to see a step by step video of how you trademarked your company name and how long the process was
What a great video and I love how clear and professional you were without rambling about pointless and time consuming things that don't have anything to do with the subject matter of the video title.
This video was just what I needed..
