    Great show in Minneapolis last night! Thank you for the behind scenes look at our State Theater. What a stellar group of musicians (although I admit that I am partial to you, Russ, and Lyle. 😊
    I especially enjoyed seeing you in the lobby and flashing the “special finger greeting” as we passed by.

    I appreciate the tour of a venue I’ve attended. Quite the place. I’m impressed with the cleanliness. Now days, one has to shell out some damn good money to get a seat on the main floor. Hundreds when you add on all the “convenience” fees, convenient for those who do the gouging. I refuse to pay it. Thanks for the tour. I wish I could have afforded to be there but I’ve seen Lyle at least five times, maybe seven. Always great shows. Saw him once there at the State from up in the balcony, too far removed from the stage for me.

    The State Theatre is an historic theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. It is one of four restored theatres in the Hennepin Theatre District.[1] It is one of four restored theaters on Hennepin Avenue, along with the Orpheum Theatre,[2] the Pantages Theatre, and the Shubert Theatre (now The Cowles Center).
    The theatre seats 2,181. It opened in 1921 and was then considered the most technologically advanced and elaborate theatre in the United States. It was designed by the Chicago architect J.E.O. Pridmore in a free Italian Renaissance style and boasted the first well-driven air conditioning system in Minneapolis. The original stage floor was glass, lit from underneath to create stunning visual effects. The opening night program featured a silent film, newsreel and travelogue. A Wurlitzer pipe organ was installed in 1925 and concerts were held every day. The State's original neon marquee ran the entire width of the theatre; it was replaced with electric bulbs and large letters reading "STATE" in the 1940s. The neon sign was recreated for a modern remodel and now adorns the theatre's frontage. Between 1921 and 1978, the State was used primarily as a movie house, but also hosted vaudeville acts, concerts and ballet. The movie screen was the largest screen west of the Mississippi River at one time. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid set a national record at the State in 1970 for the longest run of a motion picture in America. The final movie shown was Tommy on New Year's Eve 1975.
    old photo of house and additions
    Walker home at 803 Hennepin Avenue
    The theatre was built on the site of the first mansion constructed by T. B. Walker, at 803 Hennepin Avenue, in 1874. The home stood for forty years until it was demolished to make way for the theatre complex.[3]
    From 1978 to 1989, the building housed the Jesus People Church. Exterior State signage was replaced by church signage. Interior alterations were also made.
    The Minneapolis Community Development Agency purchased the LaSalle Plaza block, including the State, in 1989 as part of the LaSalle Plaza development. After nearly two years of renovation at a cost of $8.8 million, the State Theatre re-opened under its original name in November 1991 with the Minnesota Opera's production of Carousel. The restored proscenium spans almost the full width of the building and curves 100 feet (30 m) above the stage. The six chandeliers in the house are original, as are the murals on the walls. Since the re-opening, the State has hosted live Broadway touring productions such as Avenue Q, Sweeney Todd and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, concerts by Patti Smith and Gordon Lightfoot, author and adventure speaker series and films including the world premiere of the Minnesota-based and filmed movie, Grumpy Old Men. The theater appeared in the 1996 film Jingle All the Way with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sinbad. Hennepin Theatre Trust has been the owner and operator since 2005.[4]
    Historic Theatre Group's original partner was Jujamcyn Productions. SFX (now Live Nation) bought Jujamcyn Productions in 2000.[5] Live Nation sold most of its theatrical properties, including its Minneapolis operations, to Key Brand Entertainment in 2008.[6] Steve Vai recorded his 2007 State concert, releasing it as both the live album and concert video, Where the Wild Things Are, in 2009.[7]

Thank you for the walk around tour and your exploring the building as you have done with many of your documented visits. @@artemisXsidecross I find these venues very interesting particularly when it appears preserved in time and also the lack of people in public. We have virtually little if any preserved buildings as they have all become disposable to make way for sardine can accommodation at a premium price. Many choose to live that way appearing to be able to boast they are from an affluent suburb whilst they step over the homeless and needy.☮️

      Yes, developers are forever tearing down and building without any thought of what they are taking away nor a thought of the value they are making in its place. Their focus is pocketing the immediate money with little concern for the future. They are never a part of ‘reap what you sow’.
      They are no different than carnie barkers saying what they need to take your money and get you into the tent.

    Hennepin Theatre Trust was established in 2000 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to assume responsibility for and guarantee the future of the State, Orpheum and Pantages theatres along Hennepin Avenue in downtown Minneapolis. In 2005, the Trust executed a long-term financing arrangement with the City of Minneapolis to transition ownership of these three theatres from the City to the Trust.
    The City of Minneapolis originally owned the State Theatre as part of the LaSalle Plaza redevelopment project. Prior to this, our community routinely demolished older buildings - including historic theatres - to make way for new construction. The State Theatre is widely seen as the hallmark case of preservation in Minneapolis and it helped turn the tide against the automatic demolition of historic buildings. While the State Theatre was still undergoing restoration (completed in 1990), the Orpheum Theatre became available for purchase when singer/songwriter Bob Dylan and his brother put it on the market.

    • @Mark_Brooks
      @Mark_Brooks 2 місяці тому +2

      The City quickly moved to acquire the venue, began operating the theatre almost immediately and subsequently completed restoration in 1993. In August 1996, Ted Mann, who owned the Pantages Theatre, sought a demolition permit. The City rejected demolition and assumed ownership of the Pantages, which reopened after the restoration was completed in November 2002. The Trust is currently retiring more than $20 million in City-issued bond debt that was incurred to pay for the restoration.
      In 2011, Hennepin Theatre Trust established the New Century Theatre, a flexible use performance space on the street level of City Center. Seating up to 300, this venue was used for local and touring performances and education initiatives offered by the Trust - such as the Broadway Confidential series, student cabarets and training for Spotlight Education. The New Century Theatre was named in homage to the Century Theatre, one of four historic theatres that used to operate near the site of what is now City Center. The original theater opened in 1908 as a 2,000-seat vaudeville house called the Miles. It was rebuilt several times, eventually named the Century Theatre in 1929 and transformed into the 1,145 seat Century Cinerama in the mid-1950s. The Century burned in 1964 and was bulldozed the following year. The New Century Theatre closed May 31, 2017.

    • @Mark_Brooks
      @Mark_Brooks 2 місяці тому

      Today, Hennepin Arts continues to operate, preserve and program these historic theatres. As the long-term owner, operator and principal programmer of these amazing venues, they are positioned to create a bright future for them, presenting a broad array of live entertainment that enriches our community. We have hired Historic Theatre Group, LLC, to oversee the daily operation of our theatres. We also work with a variety of outside organizations, including Broadway Across America, to assist us in securing the very best in touring Broadway engagements. The Trust has brought current works to our stages through valuable local partnerships with The Jungle Theater, The Loft Literary Center, Theater Lattè Da and Cantus, the History Theatre, Actors Theater of Minnesota, Chanhassen Dinner Theatres, the Guthrie Theater and National Geographic. The Trust continues to foster a broad range of partnerships to ensure a diverse mix of programming for our patrons.

    Without Yogi do you now have someone else that sets up your bass and amp? Also when do you get a chance to practice? We see Brad practicing and would love to see how you prepare for a show too!

    Leland, .. thanks .. I'm Minnesotan (be it, outer Minnesotan) .. never having been in this theatre. It does look interesting, though. Another place, .. the Fitzgerald, in St Paul, I think, where Garrison Keillor had his "Prairie Home Companion", would be fun to see. But anyway, .. classy interior, I imagine this calling back to the golden age of Hollywood movies. Those back aisles though .. I feel a bit of claustrophobia, setting in. .. :)

    Lee - I just heard Steve Lukather telling a story that had me rolling on the floor... Did you really shoot a cup of coffee with a BB gun during a session?😅

    There are less than 20 [17, I think] Orpheum Theatres operating in the country...1 in my hometown of Memphis. Come to Memphis, Lee!
