@@NORTHERNEXOTICS hey, i have a question about the video! Is rat food okay instead of rabbit food? Because I already have rat food, so it would make it a bit cheaper for me
Hya, I checked out all these videos a few months ago when I started getting in roach breeding. They didn't breed stall and where dieing if anything. After really sticking to the tips from this video and after a couple of months I noticed baby's, all from one male because the others had died. Fast forward 6 months and haven't had one die in ages and millions of babies all from that one male that just keeps going 😆 thanks for these vids definitely on point!!
Hi, from the USA your tip on feeding oranges to get the Dubia breeding really paid off now I have hundreds of Dubia .Thanks so much !I love your channel!!!
So its 2 years after the video was uploaded and here is what I use feeder tubs for.... catch cups because I own tarantulas and I have actually got about 5 with slings in them and they are thriving. You sir are an unsung hero for saving that roach.
Whenever I mix up a batch of roach chow I just grab whatever I have in the kitchen. Graham crackers, cereal, cat food, brown sugar oatmeal, whole oats, sunflower seeds, etc.
This mix is the bomb. I'd previously made a mix based on recommendations from the guy I picked my roaches up from, but they were very slow to grow. This recipe has made such a difference! I was unable to source just rabbit nuggets, so I went with a rabbit food mix that's nuggets, freeze dried veggies, some greens etc. I also added some Exoterra multivitamin that our gecko hated.
In case anyone is wondering I use this for all my roach species though this is not a staple offer fruits and veggies along with this chow it really helps them breed faster
2/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 equals 1 and 1/3... lol. Thanks for the info., I just bought my daughter a Leo and so will start a small dubia roach colony soon. But how do I keep the colony from growing so big? :). Also, how hot can they get? I am in Texas and my garage gets up to 120 F (48C) is that too hot?
instead of using the rabbit food ive found that chicken feed and chick starter works better. those feeds are also grained based witch is what they would usually eat in the wild. using chicken feed can also be a lot cheaper and its more readily available.
The problem with grain based diet is to much potassium in the dubia roaches can transfer to a reptile and hinder the absorption of minerals into the reptile
@@NORTHERNEXOTICS man you are honestly so knowledgeable about roaches and reptiles in general. I hope 1 day to have even a 5th of your knowledge and I would be a happy man.
Great idea about using the tubs to store the chow, I've used mine for few different uses, egg laying tubs for locusts, chameleon egg hatching and incubation, feeder tubs for placing beetle grubs in the vivarium and i also use them to hand feed sometimes just put a few roaches in and hold the tub while my chameleons feed from it is a good way to earn their trust.
I love the video! I just started my colony but I also added some of the pellets that my bearded dragons eat and some of the cricket food to the mix. I feed this to both the crickets and the roaches! Talk about good gut loading!
@NORTHERN EXPOSURE i had left over coco coir, so I use my left over live food containers for growing red worms in the moistened and ground up coco coir. To feed to muh Toads.
A dark container is better for stress levels And ya can stand up your egg cartons With a small piece of cardboard between each so they slide right out and don't hang up on each other Thanx for the chow making tutorial Rock On
Great video, I do a mix very similar to this. Also something I do with my little containers that are left over like you are using. I mix up a big batch, fill the containers up and then I put them into my freezer. This keeps any sort of other critters, like weevil, that I don't want in it. Then when I need a container, I just pull it out of the freezer. Let it defrost and boom Bob's your uncle. I have never had any issues, with it getting wet from defrosting and the ice thing. As long as there is no moisture in the containers prior to freezing them. Love your videos!!
Did you mean 1/2 +1/4 + 1/4 ratio? 😁 I had a colony going so I hard for several years I couldn’t keep up with how many I had and with over ten lizards including a Savy and two blackthroats. I started selling them to the local pet shops. But I don’t care what anybody says, they can get out or dropped or whatever. Sometimes dust or sediment gets on the plastic and the babies can climb that. So wipe down when cleaning just a little tip. My wife hated finding them. She’s gone now so I’m starting another colony up. Just seeing what’s been new since my last colony, thanks for the vid. Ps.. I had a tokay gecko that ran loose in my reptile room, he cleaned up the escapees for the most part... lol a little bit of lizard poo is better to clean up than roaches.
Currently setting up a dubia colony in preparation for an ackie, your videos have been super helpful and fun to watch. Thanks for the content, just subscribed!
Should I substitute the rabbit food as I've been using puppy food for years, fortunately, I only have a leopard gecko a.t.m.o. and she's never shown interest in the Dubias, go figure lol but I use a mix of puppy food, wheat bix, corn flakes and oats and use as the substrate for mealies and the dry food for feeders, I haven't noticed an issue with her but I do intend to expand upon my animals over time and don't want any possible issues with other species. I also use water crystals as well as various fruit and veg and even without an additional heat source even being in the UK also, I've found they breed well. Love the channel btw, relatively new, can't believe I didn't find you sooner. Well informed and presented info.
Hya 1st time comment, first off love all your video far very helpful. Just started a colony and very helpful. Without sounding a prick I want to add you need to remove those concrete blocks from your Savannah monitors enclosure! I did it at one point I know it's tempting for a lovely big free hot slab basically but over time it gets into there skin and eyes (I'm in construction iv had retinal erosion you guy doesn't want that 😆) and my beardie had eye issues years ago cos of it. It may not cause an issue for ages but I pretty much guarantee at some point it will. Hope the best for you and your animals all the same and look forward to binge watching more off your videos!!
Just wanted to say thank you for this video. I've been trailing this chow for about a month and I've noticed a big increase in babies. The adults are also lasting longer and growing bigger. Before they would get to medium stage and then die off. Now I've got a couple of big beasts in there!! Not sure whether to feed them to my Gecko or keep them in there to produce more babies
This looks like a good grub to start with after a small company I used to buy dubia grub off has suddenly stopped and she used something to keep the grub together whats also used in beer and use hot water but that was great except after a bit it would get moldy. So I really wanna try this out and have no worries about food molding since my colony eats fresh veggies first
I reuse my live food tubes for hides for my scorpions and tarantulas! It would work for smaller gekos too. I black them out with black electric tape as it’s a great way to keep heat in as it’s a thermal tape
Can you make a video using that with a super green 100% juice and (agar agar and gelatin )and see which is the best and longest lasting? Maybe some unsweetened coconut added, dried fruit bits.
Is it bad to use triscuits with sea salt. I've added it as a wheat substitute and the roaches seem to not even touch it. It's in a mixture of quacker oats and rabbit food
I’m in the US, can you explain what the first ingredient was? I couldn’t quite catch what you’re saying in the video and can’t read anything on the bag. It’s porridge oats, rabbit food, and what’s the other ingredient?
Does it need to be porridge oaks, I got organic old fashioned oats. I also got rabbit food that's high in fiber and proper digestion. With minerals and vitamins. I couldn't find your biscuits I found a cookie that I believe is similar it's called parle-g original gluco cookie. Will this work?
nicee vid mate! general question, will only rabbit food + normal oats finely grounded into powder work as the main dish? (adding carrots regularly on the side for moisture). also, kind of a noobish question, are the females starting to lay their babies when they becomes shiny(not sure how to actually describe it lol)? or at much earlier phase? thanksss and keep on the great vids, very educational!
A little late here, but maybe it'll help others out. Roaches don't really care about their food. They're forest dwelling animals and feed on fruits, seeds and so on in the wild. A bit of protein, some starch and moisture is all they really need. Yes, the "shiny" females are adult. Those are the only ones giving (live) birth.
Does this one make the dubia breed better than the old mix you showed previously or is it purely to make the dubia a safer diet for reptiles? I don't keep reptiles, only arthropods of various kinds. Would the higher protein in the old mix make them a better food source for my T's, pedes & assassins? Thanks
My homemade gutload includes: •5 grain oats •Flaxseed meal •Wheat Bran •dehydrated veg mix •corn meal •vitamin blend & calcium •powdered carrot, broccoli & spinach but i dont grind it up, can Dubia's eat just regular oats as is?
Thank you for the info. I'm just starting out with breeding my dubia roaches and was looking for the best dry food to feed them. I would love to try this the only thing is I live in the USA and I cannot seem to find the wheat biscuits. So my question to you is, bread the cereal Wheaties be the same as the wheat biscuits?
Does that roach colony feed all of your reptiles that eat them? I currently have a mealworm farm for my juveniles with occasional crickets but I need to expand the diet and I'd really like to do roaches. I have a bearded dragon, leopard gecko and two turtles. I've bought rabbit pellets, but composition does not mention protein at all. Only fiber, minerals, fat, ash and moisture are indicated. It seems that roaches dont like mix with it as much as mix with dog food. Do you think that these pellets are OK even with no protein?
You always have great videos but I use cat food and oats I started with 100 about 2 years ago and they reproduce so fast I sell them by the pound. I know it high protein but they go to tarantulas. Lots of people use chick feed. As long as it has some kind of starch and a bit of protein, you're good. Don't overthink it for these little guys. Warmth, moisture, a food source. Done. The only issue is what was said in the video, a too high protein content for the lizards eating them. No issue for the roaches.
