Hey Dave, Try this. Make some paper or cardboard cones to put in the roach box to collect them. Vary the size of the cone for the amount of roaches you want to catch. A feeding cone might be 4" tall. One to assist with the cleaning could be foot tall and hundreds of roaches could climb up inside the cone ready for transport to their new home. Cut out small entries at the bottom of the cone. You could put toothpick legs on the big cones so the beetles can't climb up with the roaches. Natural sorting because beetles will run to the edge of the tub. Roaches run to the cone to hide. Watching the way they run up your hand, running up the dark inside of a cone would be a natural catching method, no need to hassle sifting out roaches and rubbish. Great for squeamish folks that really don't like to touch the roaches or get them on their hands. The roaches will separate themselves. Just lift them out slowly and shake over the target, for feeding or return to a clean tub.. I saw this at a professional cricket farm. They sized the cones to hold how many they wanted to catch per order. Example: One size cone holds 100 roaches... with your separated roaches in the tub, put in 5 cones, each fill up with 100 roaches,..voila! Make the Catch Cones any size you need to for the activity you are involved in. Catching for feeding, counting, or just moving from one tub to another. When done, cones stack for storage.
I have no reptiles or spiders, I have no plans to have a red runner or roach colony- but here I am watching both videos 😆 Your videos are so interesting!
As for water source, I made my roaches a water drinking station made from a deli container and it works pretty well. You need a plastic container with lid, a synthetic wick (i use synthetic flannel strips) and a plastic mesh. First, make a hole on the lid slightly smaller of the wick width. Pull the wick through just long enough so it can sit on top of the lid. They'll drink from it. If the wick is too long that it can dangle to the side and below the water line, the water could get syphoned out of the container. Lastly, glue a strip of mesh to the lid so they can climb up the container or you can lean anything that the roaches can climb onto it. I change the wick every time i top up the water or if it's dirty enough.. And since there's no open holes, the water loss from evaporation is very minimal and it keeps the water clean. I hope that's understandable. English is not my first language. Cheers.
Those beetles! I had to give up with my last Lateralis colony and start it again. I had so many beetles that the roaches could not even rest for a few minutes. They do eat everything indeed, I bet they ate most of the ootecas during this time. The colony was with a soil substrate and wooden repairs, was able to produce big amount of them, until these beetles took over. Going now back to a much easier to maintain setup, like yours. Fast, clean and easy. I'll play with a fancy setup for the Gromphadorhina, never again for Lateralis ahahahah Nice video, going to check your others and I guess subscribe!
Nice technique you have for your Red runners. I had to eradicate my colony as well because of the crates always gets damp. Maybe next time ill try throwing in oatmeal or bran. Very detailed and informative video. Looking forward for your dubia colony vid. New subscriber here.
I think the biggest pro of these red runner roaches is that you don’t have to crush their heads to offer enough stimulation and to keep them from hiding (like with dubia’s) I personally don’t have a problem with crushing roach heads but I seem to be in the minority I’ve been feeding my roaches pumpkin, they are very cheap and available (especially in this season), have a long shelf life in the fridge, they love them, are the most healthy vegetable (actually fruit) available and I roast and eat the seeds myself
3 Months later and my colony exploded with babies. Since I recently moved to Florida the heat in the gorage is perfect for breeding. I couldn't have done it without this video. Thank you!

Looking at this video it's starting to make me want to keep roaches as pets lol. They look so easy to take care of yet they thrive at these very simple conditions. It's wonderful! Not sure what I'd do once the population gets out of control that's the scariest part. A reason to have something that "eats" a few every now and then.
Very fascinating and creepy video although I find any insects crawling on a person's skin creepy. I'm not allowed red runners as I had some last year but some managed to escape so my parents have said they are never allowed in this house ever again lol. I prefer dubia roaches myself as they don't look at creepy and are just as easy to keep and way easier to catch haha. I use that water gel stuff for my dubias as it lasts a few days and means my terrible memory doesn't cause any issue, I tried feeding greens but I kept forgetting to put the greens into the tubs so decided to use the water gel things as I can put them in and they last 2-4 days depending on how much I put in and it seems to just evaporate which is pretty awesome. I only have 1 tarantula though so my dubia colony is tiny compared to that colony of red runners which is probably why I can get away with using the water gel lol, I only have about 10 dubia's left now and I had them for about 3 months.
Great video, Dave! I think Im gonna start one of these eventually. I have 45 Ts but 38 are inch and a quarter and under at the moment. Im guessing i should just drop $20 and 500 nymphs and raise them alongside my slings for now. But maybe i can handle a colony my juveniles and 2 adults should habdlenrhe larger ones. Hmmm decisions

I’ve been using baby chicken feed, mixed with rabbit pellets. Would that work? Do the roaches also feed on the wheat substrate? Thanks again for the very helpful videos
Hi stuart , yes they do eat the bran, I only use chicken layers pellets or chick crumb but they will eat almost anything sometimes it takes a little while for them to hatch off but it will happen , the more you watch the longer it takes 😂😂 try and forget them and they will just explode 😂👍

Hey Dave, hope you are doing good! Watched the whole video and read all the comments. A couple of quick searches led me to two questions I would love to get answers for. 1) How do you dispose the frass that potentially still has baby roaches in it after the two weeks you mentioned, or has the beetles in it? I believe you don't just throw it in the bin. 2) Is it true that people (especially children and elderly) can develop asthma and/or allergies from red roaches as well as from dubia? Thank you very much in advance, and have a great day!
I sieve mine out periodically and I have not suffered any issues but have heard that said too I would think it would have to be an infestation to cause health issues ?
Hi, thank you for another great video! Just want to ask, do the larvae of those beetles shiny ? Or are they hairy? Because if they are hairy, then they are dermestids, but if they are just looking like small mealworms then they belong to another family called Tenebrionidae, the darkling beetles.
would these be ok for bearded dragon and leopard geckos? The beardie is very much a "im only going to eat if you tong feed but im going to start feeding in a large tub to encourage hunting. The gecko tends to panic if the live food tries to bite her. They both love dubias but never had red runners. Also what about lobster roaches
Are they warm enough?I also keep the egg trays at the back quit close together which helps keep a slightly higher humidity between them , try and get a temperature reading from within your box , mine do well in the high 70s f .👍
Beautiful video! Thank you so much. Do we need to give water for dubias, lobsterd or hissers. Cuz you said there are some differences in care. I planing to breed these 4 types :)
Thank you so much for this informative video! I'm receiving my starter colony soon and wanted to ask if the oothecas could be destroyed by freezing? I used to dispose of my giant land snails' used substrate via a freezer so the eggs wouldn't have a chance to hatch and cause a problem, so it would be pretty helpful if I could do the same thing when cleaning the enclosures of these roaches. :D
@@daveslittlebeasties Thank you for the reply! Great to know I don't have to worry about missing some oothecas while cleaning. They're not a very common food animal over here, I couldn't find much info about their survival outside their enclosures in our climate so this puts my mind at ease 😊
hi dave how i can give humidity to the oothecas ? maybe kitchen wet paper and put it inside a tupper? and lay the oot on the paper? direct contact ? or maybe wet cotton near the oots? thank you
I've been keeping dubias and thanks to one of you other videos they will be doing better , i can now handle them and not be freaked out but these red runners make me run away they are just so fast and creepy 😱
I know this a a very late comment but I love your vids what do you think I should do about over-populating as a person who doesn't have very much space

I bought about 150 red runners to start a colony, they are mating and producing eggs but the eggs dont hatch 😒 I ended up buying nymph dubia roaches but they have kinda won my heart and I dont want to use them as feeders 🤣🤣 tarantula owner problems 😂😂 but in all seriousness if people ask me for advice about T's I always send them to your yt channel as the advice you give is always top notch.
Awesome video. Although, I have a question: do you separate the ooths in another container? Or you leave them with the main colony? Because I have some red runners but the ooths aren’t hatching :S so I wonder why is that? Do they need some extra humidity to hatch or what’s going on with them.
I got like a couple hundred of these guys, but due to transportation with little space, some of the adults seem to be injured, like they're missing a leg or an antenna. Could this make them somehow not being able to properly reproduce?
Hi, I'm so happy to find your videos. I just started with rearing crickets and redrunners and I red an article that they like humidity aprox 70 % as otherwise they will be dehidrated, so I literally started to sprinkle them ;D now I feel I should stop the watering and only give them some underneath heat with heating pad to keep them near 30 celsius
By the way Dave , do you advise to heat them in the night as well ? Usually I switch the pad off during the night so the temp goes down aprox 20 celsius and mornig switch back. Does it make sense ?
@@petermeichan3160 Thats a good question , I keep crickets in a similar way to the roaches and the beetles can climb or fly so I think thats how they do it , once in they are a pain but no harm to the Roaches I think ?
I found a few flour beetles many years ago and I kept them in a container. They looked nothing like that. The larvae was yellow and never dark. I was a novice at keeping them and failed miserably. It worked out for a few years, them just hanging out in their little container but eventually things got out of control. They were just too many and the mold started creeping in(my fault). It's so important to keep it bone dry. In the end I just let them out in the wild where they probably didn't fare too well. Many of these "pests" seems to really thrive alongside us humans but without us they're almost struggling.
Whenever I google whether red runners can fly, I’m given the immediate answer that the males can. I’ve always been skeptical and it appears the males are doing no such thing in this video. So is it true or not?
@@daveslittlebeasties - Thanks Dave, and that's exactly what Vermiculite does, absorb moisture and odors. I'll ive it a go and let you know how it works out.
Hi Dave. Hope you’re well mate. I sadly had to eradicate my red runner colony due to an outbreak of mites. I had it really dry in there with lots of Ventilation. I thought this may have been due to lack of dermestid beetles in my colony. After watching your video now I see dermestid beetles are unnecessary. Do you think that I just got unlucky and some come in on a top up batch of breeding adults I added, or is there anything else you can think may have caused this? As it would be handy to get another colony going. Just don’t want another mite incident as was a nightmare to deal with haha.
you see how I keep mine and I've never had a problem with mites, you may have brought them in with other roaches, I dont think the dermisted beetles are that beneficial to my colony hence I took them all out time will tell .
@@daveslittlebeasties thanks for the reply Dave. Think I’ll just have to get some more adults in and give it another go. The only difference between our setups was I had a water bowl in there. So that’s maybe why it encouraged the mites. I’ll just stick to the green leaves this time.
Hi Sir Dave, may I know why my red runner had one piece big i mean huge size than regular size, It also looks like a house roache. Or it is a red runner that mutated into its larger form or its possible queen colony because it had no wings with same red color, Its huge size and can claim in a surface plastic box. Thanks in advance for the reply. Keep safe.
Dave what were the white ones? How do the beetles get in and do they harm the cochroaches? I admire you having cochroaches crawling on you, I couldn't do it. In Australia our cochroaches luuuuuuurv the humidity - yuk it makes my skin crawl but then yours are clean because of their environment. Well done Obi Wan, the force is with you, 😀😁😂🤣😘
I'm kinda scared trying out giving them salad since I gave some to our crickets and then like 1/3 of our colony suddenly died... even through it was high quality organic local salad. Oh... and sicne we don't have any beetles in there I have a pretty simple way of cleaning it. I take like half of the crates out, so the rest of the colony hides in the remaining. After I clean the first half, put the other crates one by one of it out while leaving the roaches inside.. when I'm done, they all migrated to the clean side and I can finish up the rest.
do you keep any species of cockroach just as pets? there are some beautiful ornamental roaches like pseudoglomeris magnifica or eucorydia sp. or are they not so much your thing? (:
I don't know if you'll answer this question. I'm raising cockroaches, but the number is not increasing well and only the number of people who die is increasing. Can you advise what to fix?
@@daveslittlebeasties Thank you for your answer. One thing I'm curious about is how many rows can thrive? There are only three to four pairs, so do you need more? There aren't many creatures to eat Roach.
@@daveslittlebeasties Thanks for the reply. Is it because it's not a good idea or you just rather make use of the red runners? Beautiful video! Thank you so much. Do we need to give water for dubias, lobsterd or hissers. Cuz you said there are some differences in care. I planing to breed these 4 types :)
I dont they get all they need from the greens
Thank you so much for this informative video! I'm receiving my starter colony soon and wanted to ask if the oothecas could be destroyed by freezing? I used to dispose of my giant land snails' used substrate via a freezer so the eggs wouldn't have a chance to hatch and cause a problem, so it would be pretty helpful if I could do the same thing when cleaning the enclosures of these roaches. :D
Yes it should do the the trick 👍
@@daveslittlebeasties Thank you for the reply! Great to know I don't have to worry about missing some oothecas while cleaning. They're not a very common food animal over here, I couldn't find much info about their survival outside their enclosures in our climate so this puts my mind at ease 😊
cant get em here in Norway , i tryed to buy from UK , but post shipped em back :(
very helpful hoping to start a business soon by breeding live food also from the uk thank you
Best of luck!
It aint easy. You will have ups and downs, die outs, explosions. I myself struggle to keep crickets alive lol. They keep dropping like flies.
@@Jinx-z2g I know right even getting hold of the inventory is hard but my crickets seem to be doing well on sawdust
@@Jinx-z2g I hate crickets. Try roaches, they grow slower but survive everything.
hi dave how i can give humidity to the oothecas ? maybe kitchen wet paper and put it inside a tupper? and lay the oot on the paper? direct contact ? or maybe wet cotton near the oots? thank you
Put them on some damp substrate 👍
I've been keeping dubias and thanks to one of you other videos they will be doing better , i can now handle them and not be freaked out but these red runners make me run away they are just so fast and creepy 😱
I don't like using dry foods personally as they also will require supplemental water, so instead I just use a pile of veggie scraps for all my roaches
Can you use chick crumb for food? I can't find small bags of layers pellets for sale and I only have a small number of roaches to feed.
Yes it will be fine 👍👍
Thank you! 🥰
Wow, you shake the bucket and I shake with my hand, lol omg
I know this a a very late comment but I love your vids what do you think I should do about over-populating as a person who doesn't have very much space
Just cool them down and it will slow the breeding 👍
@@daveslittlebeasties cheers man really appreciate another question sorry in the future I want to get my first arboreal T and my dream tarantula is a P.metallica would you recommend that as a first
@@Dylanscreatures Maybe not the best as a first spider I. would go for something a little slower but if your set on a pokies I would look at the regalis generally calmer 👍
@@daveslittlebeasties ok thank you! For the help dave really helps do you think its worth breeding dubias for only 3 T's ?
@@Dylanscreatures Probably not my friend 👍
the beetles in ur colony can u keep them to feed tarantulas
yes but I find none of mine appear to like them 😂
Do the dermestid larvae eat the lateralis oothecas?
Not that I have noticed
I bought about 150 red runners to start a colony, they are mating and producing eggs but the eggs dont hatch 😒 I ended up buying nymph dubia roaches but they have kinda won my heart and I dont want to use them as feeders 🤣🤣 tarantula owner problems 😂😂 but in all seriousness if people ask me for advice about T's I always send them to your yt channel as the advice you give is always top notch.
Thank you👍
Awesome video. Although, I have a question: do you separate the ooths in another container? Or you leave them with the main colony? Because I have some red runners but the ooths aren’t hatching :S so I wonder why is that? Do they need some extra humidity to hatch or what’s going on with them.
I leave mine in the enclosure and they hatch fine , try removing them and giving them a little humidity 👍
Hi Dave! Are you not feeding them oranges anymore?
I do occasionally but the fruit flies drive me mad 😂😂😂
@@daveslittlebeasties haha yes I get that aswel!
Can you use a toilet cartoon rolls for red runner's as replacement for egg crates?
I guess so 👍
I started a dubia enclosure and realized recently that I'm too scared to get them out to feed my dragon 🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂😂
get a long pair of feeding tongs from oamazon
I got like a couple hundred of these guys, but due to transportation with little space, some of the adults seem to be injured, like they're missing a leg or an antenna. Could this make them somehow not being able to properly reproduce?
No it will not effect them at all 👍
Hi, I'm so happy to find your videos.
Got goosebumps 😅
Those beatles i believe it came from the substrate grains,... you need to fry the grains to kill those beatles first before you give to them
They come from cricket boxes 👍
@@daveslittlebeasties so how do they get from the cricket boxes into the colony
I have never seen one of my males fly ever , they have wings but never ever use them😂👍
They can glide when they jump from heights but they cant take off vertically like flies can
I like to put a flat piece of cardboard in between each egg flat
good idea!
What brand of container are these I can’t find these tall ones.
They came from wilco s
Dave, can I use Vermiculite instead of wheat bran?
I have not tried it , but im not sure it would work as I try and keep the damp down in my roaches ?
What are them leaf called you feeding
There just salad greens from the supermarket
Hi David, thank you for this video, how do you Pick the babies out and make Them grow please? Will the adults not eat them if you put them back in?
I leave them altogether with no harm to the young 👍
Hi Sir Dave, may I know why my red runner had one piece big i mean huge size than regular size, It also looks like a house roache. Or it is a red runner that mutated into its larger form or its possible queen colony because it had no wings with same red color, Its huge size and can claim in a surface plastic box.
Thanks in advance for the reply. Keep safe.
No idea
Can’t find wheat bran. Here where I live. Can you use rice bran?
I dont know ?
Ok what about red bran? A type of wheat bran. Lol
Well done Obi Wan, the force is with you, 😀😁😂🤣😘
The white ones are freshly moulted and the beetles are just a nuisance 👍
1 question the males have wings ? Don't they tend to fly off
Not very much , hardly ever fly 👍
I'm kinda scared trying out giving them salad since I gave some to our crickets and then like 1/3 of our colony suddenly died... even through it was high quality organic local salad.
Oh... and sicne we don't have any beetles in there I have a pretty simple way of cleaning it. I take like half of the crates out, so the rest of the colony hides in the remaining. After I clean the first half, put the other crates one by one of it out while leaving the roaches inside.. when I'm done, they all migrated to the clean side and I can finish up the rest.
The moisture would have been what killed your crickets 👍
I have a question. How beetles are formed in breeding.
Once there is a pest, it's hard to get rid of them. All it takes is a couple of eggs to survive somewhere
@@rebel4466 thx for answering
so what's the difference with/without beetles since you separated them?
None so far 😂👍
@@daveslittlebeasties 🤣scammy little beetles! thank you for your response and video!
if i have superworms and they get into beetle what do i do with the beetles if i dont want to keep them?
Just remove them if you dont want them ?
I can smell this video...
wISH I COULD 😂😂😂
Good morning, how many days do cockroach eggs hatch?
Depends on temps but anything from 21 days 👍
How often do you need to clean out these colony's, im fascinated by them, i almost want to just keep roaches now lol
About every six weeks sooner if they become to damp 👍
do you keep any species of cockroach just as pets? there are some beautiful ornamental roaches like pseudoglomeris magnifica or eucorydia sp. or are they not so much your thing? (:
Yes I have the emerald roaches 👍👍
do you have to do the clean out with bear feet does this help to do it easier hehehe
Helps me think straight 😂😂😂👍
I don't know if you'll answer this question. I'm raising cockroaches, but the number is not increasing well and only the number of people who die is increasing. Can you advise what to fix?
Follow my video on the roaches all is explained 👍
@@daveslittlebeasties Thank you for your answer. One thing I'm curious about is how many rows can thrive? There are only three to four pairs, so do you need more? There aren't many creatures to eat Roach.
@@ant3150 The more roaches you have the more successful they will be 👍
Hi Dave, know this was done a year ago but was wondering if you ever feed your tarantulas the dermisted beetles?
Not normally
@@daveslittlebeasties Thanks for the reply. Is it because it's not a good idea or you just rather make use of the red runners? I'm asking because I noticed you said you get rid of them but was wondering why not use them as food to do so. Thanks in advance, love your channel because it's mature and my style 👍🏾.
@@AI-AITUM I have never looked on them as food but see no reason why not 👍👍
Yes I'm interested in finding out if catfish or perch will eat The Beatles maybe crawdads or mud clams will eat the Beatles
