19:00 Mark, I do keep my babies and juveniles in a separate container once it comes time to clean out the adult bin and one reason for this is because I have heard the adults can eat the babies as a moisture source and I can keep track better how my colony is doing and I can grow out my juveniles and keep count of how many male to female ratio I'm adding back to the adult bin!!! Just My 2cents
It’s so cool that when I was younger you taught me how to dye my hair, and now that I’m rediscovering you, you’re teaching me how to breed dubia roaches
Thank you for explaining plain and simple the humidity part… I’ve been looking for the answers you’ve just provided about how to promote water evaporation inside the enclosure WITHOUT spraying the enclosure, your video is really good!
My Dubia colony gets all the moisture from the fruits and veggies they eat. You should definitely check out Dave's little beasties!!! He puts horse bran, or "wheat bran" at the bottom of the bin, keeps it clean and nymphs love to burrow in it.
I’ve heard things about not feeding citrus to dubias that are feeders. Also I’ve been told conflicting things regarding calcium for dubias. There is a concern that they may be unable to molt properly if they have too much calcium. Have you heard any of this and/or had issues with these with your colonies? There is so much conflicting information in this hobby. I appreciate you tubers like you, who set a high standard for animal care!
I use a special diet made for Dubia Roaches, water pellets and carrots for moisture and my colony has been going for two years. Also Stevie, my Leopard Gecko is doing amazing health wise. She gets a calcium bowl in her tank but i dont feed the dubia their own calcium.
I have been going about this ALL wrong. I had read to have substrate and i went and had done that and my colony didn't do anything so i ended up feeding all of them. Now i know what to do. Thank you
Oof... Wow idk how your not scared... I could neverrrrrrr. But the fact that u do all this so that ur pets have what they need is really cool. Your a great mom lol
Thank you for this. I have 1 beardie and our roaches EXPLODED. I ordered more a few months ago before a big trip and our colony was still growing. Came home to like 1000000000 roaches everywhere. My girl can’t eat them fast enough
how many did you start with? I'm starting with 155 which is a mix of adult breeders, sub adults, and nymphs. also getting 100 nymphs on the side for feeding short term. is this too much for 1 beardie? he's currently like 8-9 weeks old ..
I have a small colony. Sadly the males I had died but I'm letting most of them grow out. I definitely need to get a bigger bin and more ventilation for sure thanks for sharing.
Yes! We basically drained my colony when COVID hit. I had only had it going for a year but it seems to be thriving again already. I only have 2 bearded dragons though.
Thank you Kristen, you are amazing. I have an African bull frog who is the love of my life, and he is basically a mouth that lives to eat. I feed him hornworms, crickets, wax worms, and his favorite, Dubai roaches. His aim is not that great, and when he gets frustrated after 3 or 4 tries, he will turn his body aside to say, NOPE, I'm not interested. It's so cute.
thank you so much for this video! I am plaining on starting a roach colony for my leopard gecko. roaches are def not cheap! I think its just user to just buy a TON and just breed them from there! thank you again!!!!!
I only have 1 beardie and I'm buying 155 mix dubias... I'm worries that will be too much but I want them to provide a sustainable staple diet and beardies can eat a lot of nymphs.. any advice appreciated.. I don't want 100k dubias lol I do not intend to sell them
@@basedcanadian6869 that beardie will go thru them dubias quick. For dubias to start breeding and grow quickly, they will need a warm temperature, high humidity, and a lot of food. I always fed my dubias fresh produce. If you just keeping the dubias to feed your beardie, just keep them somewhere warm and dark. Feed them daily, enough for 1 day. Don't leave food in their bin, a lot of mold and worms will grow in their bin which will be bad. You can feed your beardie as much dubias as it can eat. I use to feed my bearded dragon dubias daily. Your beardie will thank you
@@fitodaking16 thanks for that. I've done a lot of research on how to keep them. I'm getting 155 mixed as well as another 100 nymphs separately for feeders. I was wondering if 155 mixed was too much but it sounds like it could be a good amount to start a growing colony... if he eats 20 a day that's 600 a month 🤯.. maybe I need even more.. but I don't want the colony to explode to 100,000 lol
@@basedcanadian6869 the only reason why I got to 100k in a year was because I never fed the dubias to my reptiles. I only had the dubias for breeding. I fed some of my males to my reptiles but that's about it. Also, you need to decide if you want to do a 3:1 ratio or a 5:1 ratio. 3 females per 1 male or 5 females per 1 male. Since you don't want your colony to explode, I recommend you 3:1 ratio. If you want a lot of dubias like me, I would use the 5:1 ratio method. Also, try feeding the males off to your beardie, keep your females for breeding.
Today has been the sixth day since my hedgehogs surgery. She still doesn't have her full appetite back. Since the store had some dubia roaches I got a few to try. I put her in a large bin just to make sure it wouldn't get free. The roach was upside down and that wicked fast leg movement got her interested quick!. Then it took off and she was like, NO! Chased it down. She's 2, and she has NEVER chased Anything! I said, "holy crap. Maybe I should look into breeding them." 😁🙂
I breed dubia, I feed organic gut load as their main meal, because over time they will have better genetics, in a few years I’m going to send them to the lab to get tested.
Great video, thank you for sharing, but isn't the water bowl too smooth for them to climb especially for the small nymphs? I also wonder what that feeder animal was you were talking about at the beginning that you feed roaches too (UA-cam subtitles said "feeder knolls" but I don't think that is right`;))
My local pet stores sell dubia roaches 25 count for like $8.99 my bearded dragon can eat all of these in two or three days. They are expensive in my area.
