Preparing for possible food shortages

- Just a quick video on some of the food stores and other items that I've put up in anticipation of any food shortages. I grew up with my grandparents who lived through the Great Depression and we always had food and supplies to survive incase of any emergency or disaster.
Covid supply chain issues exposed how fragile our infrastructure is along with panic buying. Pandemic, natural disasters, economy, etc. are all reasons for everyone to (slowly over time) create a supply store that they're cycling through with every day items. For me, it's not fear, but peace of mind and a fun hobby. Thanks for sharing.
I like how everything is so organized and you can find it easy. Great job!
I went store yesterday got 6 cases of 48 bottle of water and food and 20 bottles shampoo and 5 of 12 pk bar soap and 3 bottles of dawn dish soap 72oz
the bacon flavored walmart brand spam is pretty decent. good vid, cool to see another illinois boy around!
@@seventhstone thanks. This isn't all of my stores and preps, just kinda a basic how to
It's best to put all beans, pasta, the and grains in the freezer for 3 days. When I first started prepping in 2011, I just threw boxes of pasta in a tote and paid the price when pantry bugs infested all 30 boxes.😬 You're giving very good and accurate advice. 👍😀
I love your stock up, I think it's wonderful.. new sub here❤
I like that you included the alcohol in the video. I keep telling my husband we need to keep alcohol for trade...he is not a drinker....
@fanta09 my nephew hasn't drank in over 10 years , but buys a case of vodka once a month. For trade but also for other uses. Vodka is very versatile
I'm not really either but it helps the boredom and if you pass out for hours like during dinner time you save money on food, honestly if society gets to this point I have no idea why anyone would want to live in a world where you will have to do dentistry like pulling your teeth out and other medical horrors
Great antiseptic and barter item
I need to stock up on alcohol as well. It’s also great for making medicinal tinctures and things with herbs I’ve been reading.
Also put some bay leaves in your tubs. That will also keep the bugs out and wanted variants out. I also to them my jars and other containers. They don't hurt the food at all.
Since you asked, when you talked about cutting down a tree to use as fire wood that doesn't work that well..green wood doesn't burn unless you are talking about a dead tree..It is better to have wood cut and dried for a year prior to use.
Great reminders. Love your setup. Yes sir, strength in God Is the ultimate
I love how you mentioned the milk shelf life. I've seen other you rivers talky about using shelf stable milk up to 2 years after date on packaging. We use milk on the daily for cereal and I try to keep about 20 on my shelf and rotate them. In Alaska we don't have a dollar tree so my cheapest shelf stable I can find is $2.50. I still buy cold milk but also use the shelf stable and keep rotating it.
Don’t leave out powdered milk.
@@deannamauretic got that too. 😁👍🥛
Just stumbled into your channel. I'm glad I did. Thank you for your video. Good bless you!!
I put all dry goods in the freezer for a few days. Pasta, oats, dry beans and peas..etc. works like a charm.
Be careful with paper wrappers as they can absorb moisture from the freezer.
Me too
Do they absorb moisture? Especially like the pasta?
I haven't had an issue. It's just 3 days. Then, I mylar bags the food or vac seal it.
@@christyv4125 okay sounds good. Thank you so much for responding back to me.
I am in Mt. Carmel, IL
I am not a big drinker either. But I also use it to cook with.
Just a little fyi…on the cups of ramen, we had a 12 pack that was past expiration and I went ahead and ate it anyways. The noodles were fine and I don’t feel like would expire, but the powdered seasoning I think did. It didn’t taste right. I didn’t get sick from it but it didn’t taste normal. Now on the ramen plastic packets we had some that also were past expiration and the noddles and the flavoring was fine no changes that you could taste. I was a little disappointed because the cup of ramen has always been my favorite. lol! So we’ll be stocking more of the plastic packet ones opposed to the cups.
Hm, I wonder if vacuum sealing those cup ramens would extend their life. They're my favorite as well, don't really like the packaged ones
Agree with the bay leaves. Keep going.
wanted to do two seperate comments..for those wanting to purchase their first pew pew...every single person you ask is going to give you the brand/caliber that is "the best" ...go to a shop that has an attached range..and try a few...the "best" pew pew you can own is the one YOU are the most comfortable with. for an edc...if going out Im using 22 short.(hit center mass 100% of time).if im on the property...a body guard..hit center mass 90% of time..but better chance.. SAme with a LR..22..if you miss you have no right to carry one...556...Im only about 85% center mass at 100 yards...(Im tiny) seriously..try different ones..husbands are all way bigger (retired Soldier)..still dead on with 7.62..Learn what works best for you AND your budget..
New sub here…I love your channel! God bless❤️
Put ALL dry goods in the freezer for 3 days. Let the come to room temperature and put in containers.
Thank you for showing us the Kool aid stash 😁✌️
Just came across your channel and enjoyed your content. New subscriber. 👍🏽
Just a reminder. If you have a rodent problem (or possibility), you really need to get all the paper items put into hard containers that the pests cannot get into. One mouse can do a lot of damage to our stored items, and can cause a HUGE loss.
@@RogeneSmith yep... I kinda had some of the stuff displayed for the video, but most goes back in totes or buckets
@@13outdoors47 Glad to hear it. I had several things destroyed this last year. Mice will even eat through the cardboard containers of salt. I lost a lot of money's worth, by the rodents eating through packages. A very important lesson learned.

Freeze dried/instant coffee last a long time...just boil some H2O. I do prefer ground coffee, but Nescafe instant is pretty good, getting expensive tho. Also tea, bags&instant. 👍🤗❤️🙏 You can usually get food grade buckets with lids free or little cost to store your pasta. Add bay leaves to your stored items to keep bugs away. After freezing rice, beans etc, let sit out a day or two to make sure no moisture. Also, stock up on bug spray for indoor outdoor use and mosquito 🦟 spray. If possible I'd like to get mosquito netting. Thank you SIR for your military service🤗❤️🙏 Oh, I forgot to mention that I get the buckets free from my local Kroger's bakery. I did hear that restaurant give them away also. Just clean then well!👍
Faith in God! Amen to that!
I have a good supply of water in plastic bottles, 1 gal jugs, and the big blue jugs, bought in different locations, but I am going to dump it all on my garden. I have a clean basement where I stored it for the past two years on shelving. When I open any of the bottles there is some sort of tan crumbly stuff around and under all the caps. No idea what it is but NO WAY I'm trying any of it. Not going to mess with storing water again, just have enough for immediate use and a water filter system.
Just wondering if you have hard water? That crusty stuff is built up mineral deposits.
@@paulawinstead5660 all the water I have stored is purchased water, not home-bottled, and it all has this crumbly matter around the spouts, even with factory plastic-wrapped gallon 6-pack or 45 count 16oz bottles. The only ones that don't have it are the 5-gallon blue bottles which have neen there the longest.
I'm reading don't store water directly on cement floors because of leeching.
@@gayladash1814 good suggestions but I put all water on leftover porcelain tiles, not directly on cement floor.
I done took off the remainder of the week of election just in case. But with my line of work I may be called in to work if shtf in my area.
Do yourself a favor and learn how to pressure can and dehydrate food. Microgreens also. Protein powders are great to keep on hand. Happy prepping!
@deannamauretic I dehydrate and can lots of stuff; just didn't include all of that in this video. I also have access to a freeze dryer from a friend... Thanks for the tips 👌
@@13outdoors47awesome
Did you listen to the video lol
@@memeefreedom1must have missed a couple of minutes internets been wonky today
Ola ,sou do Brasil e também faço preparação ❤
I get my water for free and doesn't contain chlorine.
Do you have a spring source or well? I would love to have access to free water! You are blessed!
Good job. Keep going.
If you are just getting started, the prices of what you have is going up even more. You needed to have started three years ago? Chocolate does not last long as a prep, and neither do chips of any kind. They will give off funky gas smell. Those Zatarain's packs go stale after a short while. Mayo does not last long. Not enough water on hand. Cooking, washing, drinking. A freezer is fine, but you don't have enough canned meats on hand. I had those plastic stands before, they always bow. I stick with the good metal ones, they can withstand the weight!
How long would MREs last because I might get those just to fight the hunger if even that but if the nutrients aren't enough I'm ok with moving on, this life wasn't that good and I'm not interested in going back to medieval times with technology
@@Shadow-7773 I also have water barrels outside and have other water stored elsewhere in the house. This was just the one area that I was showing. Thanks you for the tips
@@13outdoors47 PS: Don't forget to chill after all of that work prepping! Kon-Tiki, and 10 Clover Field
@@13outdoors47 I'm glad you have more water in backup> Too many folks don't realize how much water you really need.
@Shadow-7773 I have some rain barrels in my back yard. My city has an ordinance to not have them, so that's why I didn't mention it
If you put coffee in freezer may stay fresh longer depending how fast you rotate through your pantry.
Two quick points, If you are hunting small game you might use a trap or a high powered air weapon so not to attract attention. Generally its not easy to burn green wood. It should be at least one year old.
New sub . Love the flag

Gidday. Great prepping but you missed a vital thing. That is First Aid supplies and training.
@@nephilimslayer73 I will do a 2nd video of the homemade first aid kit that I have( I actually have a couple of them)
Where do you get that stuff called seasoning?😅
@Slimchip sorry, I have so many besides the basic salt, pepper and garlic. Maybe I'll have to do a video of all my spices and seasonings 😁
I hope you have 10 times that hide some where elese great start❤
How does one person eat all that food.? Do you have a big family? My problem is getting it all eaten before it goes bad.
Why are you under the belief that packaged(especially canned) would "go bad"? The dates on packaging are "best by dates". The food in packaged/canned goods do not turn to poison on that best by date stamped on its lid or packaging. I'm making/eating tuna salad from tins of tuna with the best by date of 2018 and I'm here typing about it🙂 Only food with a TRUE "expiration date" is baby formula.
Water water water water that’s always first then food for you and your pets. Rice is a great dog food stretcher. Soaps and cleaners then any medicines you need to live medical supplies and veggie seeds
That milk goes bad..if it's clumpy it's bad
@sheyrlconstable8712 I have been using this milk for over 5-6 years. I haven't ever had any issues with it. We used it when I was in the Army. I do check it out every time that I do open a new carton.
I bought the Korean BBQ spam the other day. It's pretty good, me thinks.
Squirrel sausage is Good any time. 😊
Freeze ur coffee
@pizzagal197 before storing or keep it in the freezer?
cool, cool. But you need to produce. I'm doing potatoes, garlic and quail.
@@teslabot5650 I have a garden and seeds saved up
@@13outdoors47 Its not the same thing, but you got plenty of food to figure it out. I'm planting my garlic right now... 300 cloves. Growing a years food for one person is crazy. If all you ate was potatoes, you would need 2000 lbs per person. 3 cloves of garlic on 1 meal a day is over 1000 cloves plus 10% to plant for the following season. Quail are so simple. Making fresh eggs in my apartment bed room. It NEVER works the first time!
@teslabot5650 I did garlic last year and probably did about 50 cloves. One of the easiest crops to grow.
@teslabot5650 I did potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, cantaloupe, sweet corn cucumbers and raspberries this year
@@13outdoors47 Ive managed to not plant at the rite time everytime so far. got some this year. But even still. Its EARLY! But its cheap I can plant some mare later too
