It just so happens I was Bobby's guitarist for those years and I can tell you I've never worked with a finer performer than Bobby Darin before or since. This clip is from "The Bobby Darin Amusement Company", a Summer replacement show that aired on NBC (you can see me in many other clips from the show). This incredible performance was the closing number of the show and at the time Bobby was very ill. He died from heart complications in 1973. He was the best of the best.
What a gorgeous tribute post, but very sad also. You would have absolutely no clue looking at Mr Darin here, that he was so unwell :( May he rest in peace knowing that we still adore his voice/music. Thank you for sharing your special memories with us ❤
Yeah, a Master's Class all right! If you would be a nightclub performer, here's the task: break down every move and gesture he makes here, every breath he takes, every word he sings or ad-libs. In this short performance, he manages to cram in just about every move and trick in show business. and he does it so masterfully that it doesn't look contrived. Like a parody of a night-club singer- except done so skillfully he takes us in. He holds his performance right the line where it would become overblown, a satire, if he blew one more breath into it. And he knows when to quit inflating it. He was one of the all-time greats of Showbiz, Classy Division.
The days when people entertained. They stood out there and gave you their all. No autotune, no lip syncing, no back up dancers. Just raw talent and a love for your audience! RIP Bobby 🌹
Omg I was not born but man last four weeks in lock down I've dance blasted it out dance what singer thank you ☺️ tina 🌈🌍🌈🌍🌈🌍🌈🌍 brought listening to fats Waller all the great jazz singers when dad played his music 🌍🌈🌍🌈🌍🌈
Just pay attention to how many notes he goes between, roughly. Stays in the same vocal register all the time, slowly strolling across the stage every now and then. Singers of today should learn from this. There's absolutely no need to over-do a performance in order to deliver top-notch. A singer like Bobby Darin could pull it off using nothing but a solid voice, confidence and a coolness that just can't be replicated. A true performance, if there ever was such a thing.
what a man! He had such stage presence, he was one of the kool guys. He was so kool! Such a talent ! So sad that he died so young. I'm 65 and just discovered him. I listen to him everyday! Love that man!!!!!!
Bobby wasn’t just a country singer, he was a great overall musician very talented and could sing any song in any style, there aren’t many performers like him, not even in his day.
To think of the major health issues he was facing when this was filmed, it is amazing how he could give such an outstanding performance of his signature song!
Grandpa Can Cook thankfully my grandma got me into him when i was 4 years old. We would swing dance to splish splash on the kitchen floor almost daily. I’m almost 23 now and we still play his classics together when I visit her. I wasn’t around when he was, but he will always hold a special place in my heart because of my grandmama ❤️
Lizard better than getting to know about Bobby Darin is the fun and the memories you and your grandma had that were associated with Splish Splash. I have a feeling that your grandma treasures those times as much as you do.
Lizard That’s a great grandma there! Although I was born in 69, my parents were big into music of all genres and I passed that on to my sons (29 and 20 now). We like to say we cover everything from ABBA to ZZ TOP because we do. Road trips used to mean playing Name that Tune and it would just blow my husband away that the boys were picking out songs from the 50s and 60s while he couldn’t tell any of them and he was born in 54! Lol. He still sucks at it but he’s getting better... lol
The joy with which Bobby Darin performs is truly uplifting. Instead of being bitter about the circumstances of his health, he chose to share his immense gift as long as he was able. That's class.
The fact that this has more than a million views makes me very happy for some reason. There are still people out there keeping Bobby alive and well through his memory and his music. And THAT, I think, is what makes me so happy about it.
The master of improvisation showing everyone how good he really was. The backing could be playing a totally different song, but he’d still somehow make the words fit. He was special that’s for sure.
Something special with Bobby Darin: He loved not only singin - you can see his fun in interacting with the audience. That s something makes him different to lot of artists. Its always great watching his videos, seeing this interaction between him and the audience.
The one person Frank Sinatra was afraid of and rightly so, Bobby could REALLY SING and died far too young, What a wonderful performer and will never be forgotten. Loved him. Only this best. June.
He was the entertainers professor. Wanna bees take note........this man had it all. Today’s singers “over sing” every note. They are always trying hard to out sing the next artist.Bobby’s silky smooth voice put in many extra notes but did it with such smoothness with heart and soul in every note. He had his audience from the first note and had us begging for more with his dancing and the joy we saw on his face as he performed. No one came close to him in his day or since. There was no one like him and never will be. Frank came in second. Bobby could write songs, perform them with great class and style, play several instruments, was a very accomplished actor, and he was incredibly sexy and funny! All this and he had an incredible I. Q. !! Michael Bubble’ is the latest wanna be but he can’t touch Bobby! Wish we could have seen him in later years because he had lasting star power. Who knows what he would have accomplished? I feel sure Academy Awards were in his future.
Bobby Daren would have been BiGGER and BETTER than Frank Sinatra had he lived.God Rest His Soul, he is a LEGEND.,never will be forgotten.Love all his Music and Songs.
Artists around that time just oozed an effortlessness that makes every performance look like a breeze and just so damn enjoyable. That's totally missing nowadays...
This guy is a fantastic performer. I type this to the beat of his music as I watch the video. He could do it all. He’s got James brown, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin. All wrapped up in one body.
I've discover the incredible talent of Bobby Darin myself very recentlty, and in my searches I just happened to stumble across this fine piece. Yes, in my youth I was attending gigs and listened to music far less tasteful, but I just can't get how all those people in the audience were just sitting idly during this outstanding performance, no kidding! I just can't wrap my head around this fact, could anyone?
Everything you said applies to me, including that in my new excitement about Bobby Darin and this performance I can't understand why they aren't moving with him and this music?!
Just LOOK how he looks at EVERYONE with that gorgeous smile makes the audience feel they're the only ones his BEAUTIFUL SMILE OMG this guy was BRILLIANT
In the 1960's, Bobby Darin was the epitome of cool. In my opinion, only bettered by Frank and Elvis, and on this song (and many others, e.g. Beyond the Sea), by no-one. Superb!
Saw Bobby at the Desert Inn for the last time before he left us way to soon. Always be in my memory for the rest of my life. 1973 with Bobby for ever thee.
Here I am..second night in a row with Bobby Darin..enjoying him..looking at his cheeky face..his wonderful voice and interpretation..his magical tempo....his dance steps...his rhythm....and the b...dy tears still run down my face. Miss you Bobby Darin.
I was 13 years old in 1960 and just arrived from Cuba when I heard this song by Bobby Darin. Coming from a country with, to me, the perfect beat, this is unsurpassable right next to Celia Cruz.
An immense talent, sang, wrote (135 songs), arranged (Mack the Knife among others), played instruments, impersonations, danced, what else is there? Oh yeah, defied the "advice of others, i,e, his good friend Dick Clark, went on to do it his way. Also, at Hunter College, a certified genius.
Absolutely a perfect performance ! Done by a master showman who understood the nuances of words, tone , and gestures during a performance . Can be taught , but no body could match this guy.❤ a natural .
A great voice as well as a great performer.
I love him , and I don't know how I missed listening to him growing up
Once there was a singer named Bobby Darin...just once.
... yet, for all time ... .
He died young.
I love this
And aren't we lucky he came along in our generation so we could hear him o n the radio several times a day.
Yes! ❤

Such talent! He's with God now.

Hey clown. Don't disresbect Terry or the memory of my loved friend. I knew them both and do not appreciate your comments
Bobby just fucken owns this song❤️❤️🎯🎯
Thank you for sharing this fantastic video. God bless 🙏
This performance is almost 50yrs old. And it's still a master's class on stage presence.
Amazing. Brilliant. One of the most beatiful song in the World. In my opinion.
I agree
Always the best with dino in their era bobby sang everything and maid it his song

You are absolutely right ... perfect performance by Bobby who was absolute class

No one puts this classic over like Bobby Darin. No on else comes close.
TOTALLY AGREE!!!
Sinatra came close but yea Bobby's was better.
There will never be another Bobby Darin - up there with Sinatra and Bennet!!
And Bobby swung harder than anyone without really trying. Singing Live, you get a feel for just how talented this man really was.
That’s for sure.
R.I.P Bobby Darin (May 14, 1936 - December 20, 1973), aged 37
You will be remembered as a legend
What made Bobby Darin dye so young - so sad

Vocal running ruins a song
agree absolutely
He was a master of good singing
Absolutely....In my 33 years of life, Ive found that more often than not, less is more
Well said.
This cat was something else - one of a kind. Social activist, Mensa society, country singer, actor, drummer, chess player. What a talent he was.
what a man! He had such stage presence, he was one of the kool guys. He was so kool! Such a talent ! So sad that he died so young. I'm 65 and just discovered him. I listen to him everyday! Love that man!!!!!!
I love that you call him a cat XD
Bobby wasn’t just a country singer, he was a great overall musician very talented and could sing any song in any style, there aren’t many performers like him, not even in his day.
What couldn't Bobby Darin do?
@@bodoor8172 I agree. I didn’t mean to imply he was “only” a country singer. That was just one of his many phases.
Only Bobby can sing Mack the knife, nobody can match him.
Totally AGREE!!!
@@RiRi2023_
Agree. He speeded up the rempo. But still, no one sings it like him.
The greatest jazz singer ever
Totally FABULOUS. . Just love this amazing singer. Wish he was still with us.
But in a way, it was fitting (?) that he never grew old.. .
Simply the best.
That's how it's done kids.

Right. Sing it!

Oh yeah...
Yeah baby!
Bobby really did the best.
I hear that

Darin's is a great version. However, don't forget Ella Fitzgerald's version. Also great.
I miss those days of great music...Mr. Bobby Darin. RIP.
I don't think he ever sang this song the same twice and all of them were great. Like Judy Garland, I think he drew on the energy of the audience.
Untouchable! This is a classic for all time.
Give that man a standing ovation
Bobby Darin personified coolness without trying .
Total swing, talent and much swag. A total original
Christopher Gambol you bet cha..
He sure was. One of the big pluses of being a Baby-Boomer is that you were alive when Bobby was singing. What a talent.

I absolutely love his voice....his style.....he just made every song his own.....always a joy to watch x

And he was an actor! My first experience of him was in "Pressure Point" with Sidney Poitier. Only recently did I discover everything else. Wow!
