this song is actually not written or sung by louis, the original singer was a German playwright called Bertolt Brecht it was for his play 'the three penny opera'
My father was born in 33 and grew up to this music, as did I in the 80s. This was our bond. He's been gone for 23 years but not too far as we still jam to this.
When I was a kid the 1920s weren't all that long ago. Now the roaring twenties are a century past and the hey day of Louie Armstrong is long gone but his music lives on!! RIP Louie!
You can find great young musicians in New Orleans who keep his music alive by playing it well. I am a 50 year old washboard player from Chicago who loves playing his music. I will do my best at doing my part with keeping the wonderful music alive.
He was just a captivating performer. Can you imagine if he was a used car salesman? I would have driven off the lot with an engine block strapped to a bare frame, and thanked him for the deal.
Oh that Trumpet 🎺 opening seamlessly slipped into those disctinctive Louis A vocals . This is how its done, thank you Louis for blessing us with your talent ....!!!!!!
This man louis is a one in a million he's style was amusing...as he was amusing and his voice was unique... there will never another Louis Armstrong....R.I.P brother.
Lyrics Oh, the shark has pretty teeth, dear And he shows them, pearly white Just a jackknife has MacHeath, dear And he keeps it out of sight When the shark bites with his teeth, dear Scarlet billows start to spread Fancy gloves though wears MacHeath, dear So there? s not a trace, mmm of red On the sidewalk, Sunday mornin', baby Lies a body, oozin' life Someone sneakin' around the corner Is the someone, Mack the Knife? From a tugboat, by the river A cement bag's drooppin' down Yeah, the cement's just for the weight, dear Bet you Mack, he's back in town Looky here Louie Miller, disappeared, dear After drawing out his cash And MacHeath spends like a sailor Did our boy do somethin' rash? Sukey Tawdry, Jenny Diver Lotte Lenya, Sweet Lucy Brown Oh, the line forms on the right, dears Now that Mack, he's back in town Take it, Satch
This is a genuine gem. I was searching for Mack the Knife, hadn't known Louis sang it, but this song is perfect. Disappointed a lot of it was filmed at Louis' back ☹️Things weren't great for even the best black musicians back in the day. Glad we've evolved.
Lots of concert performance films show audience shots. I don't see anything disrespectful about it, it just shows how much the audience appreciates it. By the time this was recorded, he was a giant, for both black and white, and all across the world. He had a tough start in life, but that wasn't uncommon in New Orleans in 1901, and he soared above it to become a legend. Don't be disappointed, be glad we had him and can still enjoy his talent!
But none of them were the original from Die Dreigroschenoper (The Threepenny Opera). By Berthed Brecht, try his version or perhaps Lotte Lenya's version (wife of Kurt Weill). These give the best feeling of 1920/30's Germany. An accurate modern version comes from Ute Lempe.
Louis Armstrong his scorching voice was made for these songs. What a beautiful human being it was, and an awesome trumpet player. Mum and dad loved his music so much. My folks are long time gone now. Gosh…I miss them.
Louis Armstrong was the best! My late mother told me about how she and some of her friends once got to meet him at a club where he was playing at back in her days of youth. She talked about how he came and sat down at the table with her group when he took a well deserved break from performing. She thought that he was so kind, funny, and polite.
Tell me, if he had been white and poor and oppressed by other people, would he have been 'privileged' to have made it? Or just worked with talent to get there?
My father Julius used to talk about Louis Armstrong all the time and he ALWAYS would play and listen to his music and this was one of his favorite songs by him.
The pleasure I get from listening to him is so hard to describe. Only a stage -god like this can fill your soul with his magic. Now he is singing Mack the knife in front of God and even though the lyrics was not taken from the Bible I'm sure He can still give him a loving smile. Louis you will be in our hearts for ever. Thanks God for his talent we have enjoyed it so much. A hug from my beautiful Chile.
The best no one can do this like this very talented man. Music of yesterday year still brings a tear to eye. What a wonderful era I’ve lived music that’s hard to compete with. Such soul

When I was a kid, I couldn't figure out how a guy with a voice like that could make a living as a singer. Obviously, he was primarily a trumpet player but listen closely. He hits those notes and his timing is perfect. On top of that, he infuses it with feeling and enthusiasm. Love you, Mr. Armstrong.
My dad brought me to see all the greats when I was a kid. When I was older I saw all the great 70's and 80's bands. Louie to Led Zeppelin. Dean to Def Leppard. Frank Sinatra to Marshall Tucker. Great memories and great music.
Louis Armstrong, what a special man and talented performer. I just hope our youth of today and our future, experience his beautiful songs and celebrate his life for what he did for the music world and the entire world. GOD bless Louis Armstrong!
Louis Armstrong was just his own entire musical genre, wasn't he? What a great performer!
Yep. Kermit too.
jajajajjaa ! Yo escuchaba Louis Armstrong también
Papa was a wonderful performer. He's dearly appreciated!!
He was a great performer, but he competely missed the point of the song.

He was just a captivating performer. Can you imagine if he was a used car salesman? I would have driven off the lot with an engine block strapped to a bare frame, and thanked him for the deal.

Louis Armstrong was one the most charismatics singers in the world.
Louis Armstrong was an incredibly talented singer/trumpet player/orchestra leader, I love his version of Mack the knife
It is a classic sung in the best style
Louis Armstrong, what a phenomenal music talent.
Lyrics
Oh, the shark has pretty teeth, dear
And he shows them, pearly white
Just a jackknife has MacHeath, dear
And he keeps it out of sight
When the shark bites with his teeth, dear
Scarlet billows start to spread
Fancy gloves though wears MacHeath, dear
So there? s not a trace, mmm of red
On the sidewalk, Sunday mornin', baby
Lies a body, oozin' life
Someone sneakin' around the corner
Is the someone, Mack the Knife?
From a tugboat, by the river
A cement bag's drooppin' down
Yeah, the cement's just for the weight, dear
Bet you Mack, he's back in town
Looky here Louie Miller, disappeared, dear
After drawing out his cash
And MacHeath spends like a sailor
Did our boy do somethin' rash?
Sukey Tawdry, Jenny Diver
Lotte Lenya, Sweet Lucy Brown
Oh, the line forms on the right, dears
Now that Mack, he's back in town
Take it, Satch

This voice is unique. We won't have such great man with his voice and creativity.
When I was a child in the 60s - I always sat on the floor right in front of the TV whenever Louis Armstrong was on.

One of my favorites by Louis Armstrong. Everything about this video is beautiful despite the lyrics.
Talented man indeed he was....still enjoy your music
Just shows that old time songs are no less dark or violent they just aren't as loud about it.
This song is awesome RIP to armstrong he had a very unique cool way of singing
