Regarding breakable floors, Sonic is usually fast enough to outrun the floor giving way; regarding the pit of spikes, that's basically what Eggman tried in SA2. The blue rat escaped anyway.

Its never said Metal came up with Final Fortress and Egg Fleet. Since the game does a rather poor job of explaining what was happening between Eggman and Metal before Metal took over. If anything Eggman probably built it all then Metal betrayed and took over.

Back then even though I was a pretty stupid kid I understood from graphics and sound quality alone that handhelds were way weaker than consoles (so you can imagine how surprised I was when I got a 3DS for my birthday), so I just took what I had I guess.

I dunno since the game never shows in a cutscene of when Metal betrayed Eggman. Eggman could have built the Final Fortress and Egg Fleet before Metal betrayed him with obvious intentions to use it as his next plan but then Metal betrayed him and took over the entire fleet seeing it as a good part of his plans. It would explain why Metal doesn't care about destroying parts of the fleet as he flat out blew up the giant Eggman shaped tower and he throws ships at you during Metal Overlord. Also I think Metal was the one who set up the self destruct buttons to trick Sonic and the others into thinking destroying the fleet meant they had foiled him and as a cover up to what he was really up to.
