Thin Lizzy songs aren't metronomic: The band had great feel for rhythm and syncopation so that you couldn't keep your shoulders from dancing and your arms from flailing. But what truly set Thin Lizzy apart from the pack was the inimitable Phil Lynott's incredible gift for singing over, under, around, and through the riff and the beat. The man had such great FLOW! He seldom if ever sang a syllable on the beat. He'd sing ahead of it, behind it, over, under, around, and through it, but never the same way twice. Their name came about from their taking the name of a robot character in a Scottish comic strip who was named Tin Lizzy and sort of putting an Irish accented twist on the pronunciation - i.e. Thin Lizzy. The 1976 master of the song is featured in the video game Guitar Hero 5..[citation needed] The song is used in "Late Editions", the ninth episode of the fifth season of the television program The Wire.

I was a huge fan of Thin Lizzy. Many years ago they were headlining a festival in the UK. It was the Sunday night they were on, so we got there on the Friday. I was only there for Thin Lizzy. So we started on the booze and other "substances." By Sunday, I was off my nut. So I thought I would have a nap. I woke up to hear Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy saying "Thank you, goodnight you've all been great." I had bloody missed them! I was mortified. And sadly I never got to see them as Phil passed away not long after. But I have asked other reactors to check out Thin Lizzy but you're the only one that has so thank you and RIP Phil.

Back in 1980, I was working the midnight shift on an FM rock station near Kansas City. Middle of the night, I get a phone call from some guys in a rural county jail - they got busted on drunk & disorderly. They were allowed a radio and used their one phone call to give me a list of 3 requests, one for each of them. I played their tunes, then, as a personal gift from me to those fellas, I tossed in this song. Hope they enjoyed it.
Tin Lizzie was a robot character in the comic Dandy. The story goes that the band was name after that character but, as thin sounds like tin when spoken with an Irish accent, the name ended up as Thin Lizzy.
The name Thin Lizzie was suggested by original band member Eric Bell. He had seen Eric Clapton on a 1966 John Mayall's Bluesbreakers album cover reading a copy of the Beano (a British comic). The Beano had a sister comic called the Dandy which had a strip about a robot maid called Tin Lizzie. He suggested the name, and the band changed it to Thin Lizzie.
I remember covering this song back in the day, thinking "This is gonna be easy... That remedial guitar riff with a simple rock groove and limited vocal range"... Until I realized how hard it was to cover this vocal! The phrasing is ridiculous to wrap your head around. Tom Petty and Mick Jagger did the same thing at times. Making messed up lyrical flow sound simple. Stupid geniuses! Thanks, Jamal, for blowing the dust off of this song. If I hear that intro riff sampled on some Rap album I'll know who to blame! :-)
@@screamingscarecrow4251 - Yeah when the "Time signature" (or lack of) doesn't match what you are playing on guitar, it's tough. When you sing it "right" it comes off as the dumbest, whitest sh%t ever, and singing it as it's supposed to be, messes with your brain until you've done it enough that it's ingrained in your head and all falls in place. Another one (for me) was American Girl (Tom Petty)... Such an easy song... or was it? R.I.P. Tom... but you were a real asshole with that one! hahaha.
Back in the day I was listening to a lot of Soundgarden and I got hold of a knackered Gibson Firebird for cheap. Thought I would try some deceptively simple grunge on it like Kim Thayil. What a spectacular mess I made. EEBBBE tuning (?) and middle eastern time signatures... I gave up.
Greg Daniel I was just learning guitar and thought I’d download the chord sequences for Cornell’s “Preaching The End of the World” off Euphoria Morning.... 24 different chords used. And not basic standard ones. Not a one of those SG guys does anything basic!!
@@nettiemac - Yeah, but like many other greats you know it when you hear it. From SG to Neil Young, rock artists have been messing with chordage (and our minds)... It's these deceptively easy, sometimes basic 3-chord songs that turn out to be ass-kickers that just make you say "wtf" the first time you screw 'em up. I took a "Jazz detour" in the 90's and found about three trillion new chords along with some crazy time signatures, so its a real slap in the face when a classic or modern rock song gives me trouble. I mean, how F'ing easy does Jailbreak sound? Usually, for me (like jailbreak) it'll be an unorthodox VOCAL over the top of the guitar part. More of a "rhythmic retardation" (Sorry, PC generation).... Singing drummers?... Well THAT's a whole new story. =)
The name came from a metal robot character, Tin Lizzie, in a popular British children's comic (either Beano or Dandy, since I read both). The name had become an affectionate if pejorative term for insubstantially-built vehicles and other machinery since the Ford Model T, which in turn earned the nickname from an unpainted track version so named because it resembled a tin can. Some Irish tend to pronounce 'thin' and 'thick' somewhat like 'tin' and 'tick' in everyday conversation, so the group played with this.

They thought it would be fun to razz their audience by calling themselves "Thin Lizzy," because it would still sound like "Tin Lizzy" when they announced themselves.
The most awesome Thin Lizzy tune! My favorite there is so much power and raw energy and emotion from beginning to end in this punch you in the face song! I'm so glad you've "discovered" another killer band! When you react to these old songs I've been listening to for many years it reminds me how I felt when I first listened to these bands way back! Your particular take on these musicians is very articulate and quite a joy to see.
I would tell you you REALLY need to check out Volbeat! They have a great diversification of musical styles they use in their songs. Their new song "Die To Live" is absolutely smashing. I'm 52 and I have not listened to a song as much as I have this one since I was a teenager. I seriously listened to it at least twice a day now for 2 months. It has a great boogie woogie feel to it and is just simply a awesome tune! Please do reactions to some you won't be sorry! Love the channel! Keep up the great work. Love from the 402!
Best Irish rock band. One of their best songs IMO.
Their name came about from their taking the name of a robot character in a Scottish comic strip who was named Tin Lizzy and sort of putting an Irish accented twist on the pronunciation - i.e. Thin Lizzy. That's so cool that you are into them - they are amazing. Their live stuff is the best of their videos on here imho, so hopefully you can find some of those. Thanks for the cool reaction videos!
The name was from The Dandy comic.
At least he likes the stuff he's never heard before. Respect!! Genuine positive reaction. With this, as it should be, of course.
He's doing a great job. I couldn't do it. Too old, played drums too long. Know tons of music, like a lot but can't stand a lot, also.
The band's name came from a robot character in a kids comic The Dandy called Tin Lizzie.
Thin Lizzy- "The Cowboy Song"
I never heard this song from Thin Lizzy before. This was a good song. Great reaction, Jamel.
Hey Jamel, "Jailbreak" was also used as the B-side of the "The Boys Are Back In Town" 45 - I still have my copy!
So do I!!!
BCashion1962 My first 45 ever was 'C is for Cookie' by Cookie Monster. 😂
Damn. Wish i had that one
My mom would also let me wander off by myself in Kmart 45 aisle until I got molested ,,, I was gonna cut his neck with a record,,, I was maybe 7
@@jamesmonroe5846 damn James
I saw Thin Lizzy in 1979 when they opened for Journey in San Bernardino, CA! What an awesome show!! 💙💜
Oh yeah, now you gotta go listen to AC/DC's 'Jailbreak!' Different song, same name, and both released in 1976! Oh, here is where you could've heard Lizzy's Jailbreak. Taken from Wikipedia:
Use in media
In December 2008, the song was named the 73rd best hard rock song of all time by VH1.[1]
"Jailbreak" is used in the films Detroit Rock City, Joe Dirt, Bordello of Blood, and Gracie. and was also used in the Veronica Mars episode "Ahoy, Mateys!" and on the MTV show Jackass.
In 2008, an edited version was featured in a TV commercial for Miller Lite beer as well as MLB 08: The Show.
"Jailbreak" is featured in the 2008 video game Grand Theft Auto IV on the radio station Liberty Rock Radio 97.8.
On 3 February 2009, a live version of the song (from the Still Dangerous live album) was released as download content for the Rock Band series as part of a Thin Lizzy pack (which also contained versions of "The Boys Are Back in Town" and "Cowboy Song" from the same album). The 1976 master of the song is featured in the video game Guitar Hero 5..[citation needed]
The song is used in "Late Editions", the ninth episode of the fifth season of the television program The Wire.
They started every concert with that song. I'm pretty sure Phil just had a real gift for writing in a story telling way.
Thin Lizzy "Whiskey in the jarr" should be next !!!
This song always amped me up, used to listen to it back in the day before the martial arts tournaments I was in. It would totally psych me out..
When we saw Thin Lizzy live, my friend passed out during this song. Shoulda shared that bottle, bro
Adam Carola used to play this song in the background frequently during his syndicated radio show.
Literally everyone: Iron Maiden invented twin lead guitars.
Me: Pulls out Thin Lizzy and Wishbone Ash records
Me: slides the Skynyrd out of it's sleeve...
Judas Priest was before maiden on that .
@@roberts.5136 I was gonna say that...
Xero Delacroix Thumbs up, for the Wishbone Ash!!!
When were you born son? Dozens of bands had twin lead guitars before Iron Maiden was formed.
The band’s name came from a robot character in The Dandy, a British children’s magazine, called Tin Lizzie. They changed it to Thin Lizzy as a playful reference to the local Dublin accent, in which "thin" would be pronounced as "t'in".
The name comes from the name of a robot "tin lizzy" in a british comic book...and in Dublin (where the band's from) tin and thin pronunciation is near or dang near the same, there was confusion 😂😁
Interesting on the comic. Of course Tin Lizzy is the nickname of the Ford model T. Thin Lizzy the comic theory works for me.
@@timothyhays1817 yep, it's a play on the broader Irish accent (not just Dublin) - th is often pronounced as a soft t.
yeah. It was their first English gig. The promoter thought Phil was saying Thin Lizzy in his Dublin accent (using t for th) and printed up posters saying Thin Lizzy. Phil saw the posters, liked it so renamed the band. That's what I heard anyway. (from a bloke down the pub)
Awesome tune.I remember as a 12 year old here back in 76 NYC listening to mostly R&B,disco, funk when a buddy of mines who was only into rock ask me to check this out
If you want to hear a Thin Lizzy song more on the 'softer' side--try 'She Knows'. It's more of a ballad but it is one of my favourites from them.
A lot of people "back in the day" had this permanently plugged in to their *8-track tape* players lol... brings back a lot of memories.
Spin some Robert Palmer "Sneakin Sally through the alley"
Trying not to get caught!
My favorite band during high-school in the mid 80s. I remember being a kid hearing Jailbreak on the radio...all the time
Please do a reaction to still in love with you. Thin Lizzy is one of my top 5 rock bands of all time. For me it's Thin Lizzy, the Doors, Alice Cooper, Journey, and Aerosmith...
You lost me at Aerosmith Lizzy in top 10 for sure through miss management or something didn't reach the heights some of the other fantastic songs on other albums didn't reach the masses for some reason only reason I went have them higher
The band's name came from a robot character in The Dandy (a childrens comic book) called Tin Lizzie, which they adjusted to Thin Lizzy as a playful reference to the local Dublin accent, in which "thin" would be pronounced as "t'in".
Thin Lizzy - "Still in love with you" PLEASE!
Oh such a good song, one of my favorites!
Live too
“Don’t believe a word” both versions, fast and slow.
the live version!!!
I was born in 1969, grew up listening to everything. My first intro to Hip Hop was Sugar Hill and The Furious Five. It's fun to see you find this music. Thin Lizzy is legendary.
Just react to the whole “Live & Dangerous” Thin Lizzy live Album.
One of the greatest live albums ever,,,, 😏
Not a bad song on the album.
Name of band explained by T.L. drummer Brian Downey on one of the Phil Lynott documentaries, available on UA-cam. Sorry that I can’t remember which one.
You are the best! Such an amazing person and energy. We love you.
“From under my breath” man Philip could sing anything...
Oh Yes!!!!!!! Thin Lizzy was known for their live performances. They opened for Queen in America. Philip was a great front man.
One of my favorite bands and what got me into playing guitar. Their Live and dangerous album is the one to listen to 👌🏼 check out Gary Moore still got the blues. He played with Lizzy for a while. Best guitar player ever to walk the planet imo, he could do it all and better than most.
me too.
The name came from a robot character in The Dandy called Tin Lizzie, which they adjusted to Thin Lizzy as a playful reference to the local Dublin accent, in which "thin" would be pronounced as "t'in". For some of their early gigs, the band were mistakenly promoted as "Tin Lizzy" or "Tin Lizzie".
Huh. In my circles, a tin lizzie is a Model T.
That's cool. I've enjoyed their music for more than 30 years, yet only learned of that now. Cheers. Have a blessed day.

Timeless riff, didn't take long for it to stick in your brain... forever.
The name of the band was based on a comic in Ireland called Tin Lizzy a female robot. They added an H as a tongue in cheek reference to the people in Belfast who could not pronounce their H's when they spoke.
All I got to say is Thin Lizzy "Cowboy Song"
Absolutely
Yes!
Same
As much I love that song I have a sad history with it. Was the last song my best friend and I listened to before watching him get shot and killed. I have to skip it most times it comes on but there are times I will play it and try and keep it together
Right?,....RIGHT!!!!!, up there with "Mamas dont let your sons become cowboys, Willie Nelson, but more Bang, Pow and Punch, harder, more gritty. They should've used Thin Lizzy in Frank Miller's Sin City, the first one, they had that gritty rock feel, blues and country. Excellent. Peace ✌

Best Hard Rock Irish Band Ever !! 🇮🇪🍀🤘🏻
Hey Jamel, you're pulling some killer stuff lately. Try "Whisky In The Jar" for another great TL song. Have a great night!!
It was their big hit
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
This whole track is good, every song, listen to whole thing!
Tin Lizzie was a robot character in the comic Dandy. The story goes that the band was name after that character but, as thin sounds like tin when spoken with an Irish accent, the name ended up as Thin Lizzy.
One of my favorites by this cool-ass band. And check out their song "Emerald" too.
Some of Jimi Hendrix stuff is hard to sing and play too.
Pretty sure i heard this song on the classic 90's movie about the 70's Detroit Rock City!
you should definitely check out "still in love with you" by Thin Lizzy
You definitely need to check out thin lizzy's Cold Sweat!
Or Megadeth's cover of it.
"Cold Sweat" is the best cut on their swan song album, "Thunder and Lightning." Uberchopsmeister John Sykes is THE MAN!
When doing Thin Lizzy reactions, you really need to find the live versions
The live version of Little Darlin 🤯

I grew up to this! Always liked Thin Lizzy. My father had every album out there of rock n roll of all types. I still listen to Thin Lizzy, Boston, Foreigner, Frank Zappa & sooo many more on my playlists today BECAUSE its part of my childhood.

well that's my opinion.

Phil said in an interview they named the band after a female robot character called ' Tin Lizzie' from a British comic and as Irish people pronounce 'thin' tin, they called themselves. Thin Lizzy also changing the 'ie' on the end of Lizzie to a 'Y'
“Tonight there’s gonna be a jail break, somewhere in this town.”
Probably at the jail.
I just subscribed to you. LOVE your whole approach to music that wasn't a part of your world previously. You are an inspiration. Been going back and watching these videos for like an hour now. Lol good stuff man. I wish more people were as open as you are.

This entire album doesn't have a weak note ON it! 🤘🤘 🔥🔥🔥🔥 🤘🤘
...you should've, just, gone into the next song: "Angel From The Coast" [an outright banger!]

which they adjusted to Thin Lizzy as a playful reference to the local
Dublin accent, in which "thin" would be pronounced as "t'in
2) The nickname for a Ford Model T was a Tin Lizzie and they added an "h" for the same above reason
And Yes; this song and Boys are Back in Town have been used in numerous movie and TV shows
