    I'm sorry if I offended anyone by saying I hate when people smoke. The woman who lives below me is a heavy smoker. I get terrible migraines every time she smokes which is everyday. My dog who recently passed away had a really bad breathing issue and certain things like cigarette smoke would trigger her episodes. I had to invest thousands of dollars into emergency vet bills and getting an oxygen tank just so Cutie could breathe comfortably at home when she was smoking. It was a horrific situation that has left me with tons of anxiety and nightmares. Just thinking about it I feel sick. The woman knew exactly what was going on but didn't care. Moving wasn't an option because I couldn't afford to live anywhere else. If you've been a subscriber then you would have seen the videos of me crying hysterically and explaining this on this channel and my vlog channel. Maybe now those of you who judged me so harshly can understand why I hate the act of smoking. I also want my young subscribers to have a role model who does not agree with smoking, it is so important to be healthy and not put bad things into your body. Many people do not talk enough about the dangers of smoking and second hand smoke. It is a very serious issue and should not be taken lightly.

      Totally don't worry about it, but it's so sweet you thought of it. Yay for soft hearts :) For real though, my brother is a smoker and I've lived with him smoking for over 15 years now. Never had issues, but now I've developed asthma and other allergic reactions. Have to carry an inhaler. Secondhand smoke absolutely hurts others. Fight for your loved ones, even the furry ones! It sure sounds like your animals have a good momma :)
      Also, totally wear your grandma's ring! Heirlooms are meant to be worn, used, appreciated, cherished, and then passed on!

      A few thousand dollars for vet bills compared to $20,000 a year for rent to live in a new place is a huge difference. It's extremely rude to question me on such a sensitive topic.

And then like a month later everyone is like :" nah, I'm tired of Bicycle shorts" . Same with accessories and everything. Fashion changes, but the memories stay with u forever 💖

    My grandmother is 84 years old was a part of the "1950s house wife" generation. Whenever we talk about it, she always looks back on it so sadly. She was a star student and graduated from college, but because of the time, she didn't pursue a career. She did what her family expected of her and got married/had children right away with a man, who turned out to be very abusive. She told me that things were different and women didn't have as many opportunities as they do now. It really puts my life in perspective and makes me realise that I take things for granted sometimes. She is a beautiful woman and deserved a chance to be more.

      Caitlin Marie Yes, the 40s and 50s aesthetic may seem glamorous but the reality was the farthest from glamorous for many. I had the chance to meet my great grandmother and she was the sweetest lady, but unfortunately she had a rough life. She was extremely poor and was forced to marry at 15 to a 36 year old man with 5 children, she then birthed 10 more children from him. He was also abusive. I can't imagine the hell it must've been for my great grandmother and your grandma.

      My grandmother is also 84, and always says it was a really bad time. She was a child during the great depression and finished high school at 16 then got married and pregnant. She went on to have 5 children and 4 husbands. Only two of her kids had the same dad. She was always the simple housewife and she obeyed her husband. She was abused and cheated on by her first three husbands. Then she met an amazing man, who unfortunately died of lung cancer. So i really understand. The 50's was a..interesting time period, nonetheless.

    Feminism means supporting women for whatever lifestyle they choose for themselves, whether that's being a hardcore career woman, a hardworking homemaker, or anything in between 💕 This video was so interesting and I agree, I love the "simpler" way of life especially as an anxious person, and I often wonder what it would be like to not have social media and the internet in general because I feel like it sucks up a lot of my time and brain power.

      yes... I am all for empowering people to live the lifestyle they truly want. Not the one society has for themselves... In my culture women go to work, housewife is really rare... (post communist country) and i dont mind it, i like the opportunity to be able to make a career without being looked down upon. I however know that when a woman wants to be a housewife some people do gossip about it, when in fact just 60 years ago it wasnt so shocking. I also support women from different cultures who want to work, be independent, live alone - and cant. For example in muslim countries..

      SweetEmelyne's ,I think it's ironic that more women were married back then because they knew their role . Despite all of the feminism .It doesn't work .We are going against the grain. We are nurturers of future generations.We have forgotten that.Nice challenge look forward to next challenge.

    • @jilliankelly8689
      @jilliankelly8689 7 років тому +38

      Rashaun Jones hell no, all people despite race, gender, or sexuality have a choice in what they would like to do during their life. A women's "place" is not cooking or at home picking up after her children and husband when she could be doing something that actually benefits society as a whole. When women joined the workforce, families were more likely to be financially stable, it also made it easier to thrive is a spouse died. So no, we are not the "nurturers" of the future, and we damn well don't have to put up with the conformity you think we should follow. :)

      as helpers.This what is intended and we should work as one in a marriage as God intended.

    Both of my grandmother's would put out a full breakfast which was 2 eggs, bacon, toast, fruit, juice, milk, and cereal every single day but they only had time for juice and toast. Then the entire list you have followed by a full dinner and dessert. Hair was rolled the night before, makeup was removed after they washed and curled their hair. They wore house dresses and slippers while doing chores but what I thought was weird was getting fully dressed and ready before their husbands get up and then putting on slippers and house dresses after he left only to re-do it all before he gets home.

      Well, because why mess up a pretty dress to crawl around on the floor cleaning? Some women were jeans for housework, too.
      Bacon and eggs won't ever hurt you, as long, as it isn't every day. We used to eat scrapple, which is basically fried pork. In my family, if you don't drink too much, you'll live to your 90s.
      Also, there's no canceling out a bad diet, even I'd you're skinny and fit. Can still have a stroke or heart attack, even if you're young. See video game deaths. They got thick blood from sitting too much and too much junk, pop and not enough water. Called Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).

    • @cynthiamarquez3370

      The house dresses were actually quite attractive and nice enough to wear outside to hang laundry or go visit a neighbor. They also featured large pockets on the skirt which distinguishes them from a day dress which would be worn out to a tea or luncheon or to church on warm days. Watch Ethel Mertz. She wore house dresses with large pockets Nothing like the granny gown house dresses today.
      I wish i could find a stylish 50s type house dress to wear.

In a couple of the rooms there are these weird boxes on the wall that I couldn’t figure out what they were for. When you held up the plug for your pink phone, it clicked! Get your own ring.. your grandchildren will love it. As far as your grandmas ring- keep it and wear it when you want to switch it up. That way, you can still honor it but wouldn’t have to change a thing about it. Good luck and you grandmas ring is gorgeous 🙂

    You could get a rose gold ring INSPIRED by your grandmothers ring. It would be sentimental, but you wouldn't have to sacrifice hers. I kind of agree that hers looks large on you (not that you know me or that my opinion matters) but maybe just find a design that looks similar to it or ask a jewelry designer to make one inspired by it!

    In the 1950's those phones were all black and good quality. They never broke! And we had no makeup brushes. Compacts or boxes of loose face powder had powder puffs. Coffee pots were not electric. The AM radio would be on. No ice makers, so empty ice trays into a bin and refill them with water. Be brace. I'm glad those days are over.

    • @LaBlueStateGirl
      @LaBlueStateGirl 7 років тому +9

      Yes to all of this! Except there were a few very specialized make-up brushes around. My mom would have used her own mascara wand that was dipped into a little pot of black/brown (her color) mascara. I'll ask her the next time I talk with her.
      Don't worry about what is on that plug on the end of your princess phone! As long as you got it from the states, you're fine. The house that it used to be in just had the old fashioned outlet. A few years ago, I'd suggest going to radio shack, but that's out! lol! Rewiring it by cutting off just a tiny bit of the end of the wire and putting on the plug that you are used to seeing is simple with the correct tool. Local people with the correct skill sets to try are a local Maker Space, a local Electronics Club, or even a Ham Radio Club would have the right skill set. Good Luck with that. Too bad I can't just send you to the Phone Center Store at the mall! (The blue phone and the Princess phone were most likely 60s phones, but were still amazing quality. You had to rent, not but them).
      Don't forget your iron! Your day look was totally adorable, but even when you first put it on, the skirt was wrinkled. Next time, especially with a cotton or cotton/polly fabric to go along with just your iron, buy a can of "magic sizing." Your grocery store has it. It will help give your 50s clothes that crisp look. (a slip will help too)

      Yep, I currently own one of those black rotary phones I got from my grandmother. Still has a label on it with the warranty expiration from "Bell Systems" (old name for AT&T). A few years ago when we had digital home phone run into the house we hooked it up to the phone jack in the wall and was able to still receive calls on it clearly! It couldn't make calls though because the digital phone networks today can't read the analog pulse dialing that those phones used. I now have it sitting on my piano as a decorative piece since we canceled our home phone service.

    I don't think I could stay a housewife. Maybe for the first year or 2 after my kid was born but after that I have to go back to work. They way I grew up, I honestly can't solely depend on my husband for all my financial needs. I watched my grandfather screw over my grandmother that way. I need my own money, my own safety net because you never know what may happen. Now I will never look down on another woman that does or wants to. You do what feel is right for you. I am all about women having the right to make their own choices. Back in the 50s there wasn't much of a choice, it was how you said a way of life. I do think the 50s house wife life is cute and I can see myself doing it on the weekends when I am not working, or cooking because I love to cute(I want your aprons!), or laying out a cocktail spread because I can't make a good drink. I just can't see myself doing it to the T. I do love your videos and I'm subscribing to see more :). Yay for vintage lifestyle!

      I am wearing an antique Ruby diamond and platinum rose cut ring that my jeweller reconsider was first cut around 1890-1915. I love my unusual trinity ring it certainly catches the eyes and light and I've had so many comments on it. Strangely enough today is 49 years since we became engaged with a ruby diamond cluster style ring but my husband bought me my ideal ring last year when I retired. If you want to use your grandmas ring use it if you feel the sentiment use the ring I passed my original ring on to my daughter and she gave our oldest grandson it when he told her he planned to propose. I offered to pay for restyling but she declined as she loved the design. To each THIER own.

I’m attending school right now but I have a lot of days off and am trying to live a worthwhile life and keep the house up in the meantime. I told my grandma i’m trying to follow a vintage routine in my days off and she finds it amazing because her mom, who was a young woman in the 1950s, had to work all the time at the phone company and never really had much time to do the full routine. She had to squeeze in cooking and cleaning on the weekends and share the meal making with her husband.

      I feel so old right now....My first "record player" was the Fisher-price one, with the colorful plastic records. Then when I was about 7 or so, I got my older brother's record player because he bought a new 8-track player for himself. Damn, I feel so old right now....

    Couldnt agree with you more! I totally get what you say about not minding being a house wife/stay at home mom. I used to work like crazy all day for my career when I was younger. I am now married and I just had a baby and now I'm a stay at home mom and let me tell you- as hard as it was to work long hours everyday, it's just as hard if not just a bit harder staying at home. Not only do I have to maintain the house and cook dinner and stuff. I also have a baby that I have to take care of. And that alone is very time consuming. But at the same time, I enjoy it SO much! I love the feeling of a tiny little person being so dependent on me! It feels great to be able to love him and care for him! Plus I also love having everything clean and ready so when my hubby gets home, we can sit and relax and play with the baby. Then having dinner together and seeing how he enjoys my food and my hard work feels really nice too! So all in all, like you said there is nothing wrong with being a career woman or a housewife! I enjoyed being a career woman and I enjoy being a housewife now too! So to each his own! ❤️ great video Em!! Would love to see a part 2 but glam! 😁💍💅🏻💄👗👠

    I wish I lived through the 1950's. I love the music, Hollywood personalities, the fashion, food, the cars, and simplicity of life. Life was so simple back then and people appreciated what they had. People were hospitable, genuine, and happy. A huge difference between then and now.

      Cathleen Levato I mean all of that is great, but there was also incredible amounts of racism. People often romanticize these time periods and it's important to acknowledge the very apparent issues then.

    • @Cathleen425
      @Cathleen425 7 років тому +4

      Anna and of course I completely understand and agree with what you said, which I why I didn't mention that in the things I loved about this decade. Each decade has its own problems and racism was 100% the issue in the 50s. But even thought the issue is terrible, there are many wonderful things that took place in the 50s :)

    • @fangirllifealways1916

      Cathleen Levato That was if you were an upper middle class 'white' male. Sorry, my impressions of the 50s stray far from yours.
      I have to agree with the music though 🙂

    • @Cathleen425
      @Cathleen425 7 років тому +2

      Jane Austen Fantasies 05 not always upper class. My dad lived his childhood throughout the 50s and he said it was the best and happiest time of his life. And keep in mind my dad and his family were anything but upper class. People outside the upper classes found ways to have fun and make life great while also working to contribute to their families and to society. People appreciated life in the 20th century and I think that is why so many people had fun back then, regardless of class. My dad made sure I grew up on the amazing entertainment that he did and I'm very grateful that he did because today's entertainment is garbage lol. And of course you can't deny the racism and horrible treatment blacks throughout the 50s and 60s got, but you also can't deny the amazing advancements we made as a country in the 1950s, whether it be a technological or social advancement. 🙂

    My mom did all this and I still do as well. I can bang out about 5 things before I even get in the shower. But women did not wash the floors every day, as neeeded. But they did not hang out in sweats all day, capri pants and a cute top and flats were the outfit of the day usually except dressing to go out. I always set the table, cloth napkins are easy with placemats, cook mostly from scratch, it's really not hard it you time manage. A crock pot does help, mom had a presser cooker.

      I use the pressure cooker for beans and then measure and freeze. With a bit of corn (like a small slice of polenta) you have a complete protein. Gets rid of the leptins that hurt people's bellies.

      Mine do. I've met dogs that were ENAMORED with me because I was eating one on the street. They were 2 gorgeous Vizslas.
      My lab also eats apples, oranges, melons, lettuce (with some dressing, lol) , bok choi, cauliflower, broccoli and pretty much what I'm eating. Carrots are also a hit and green beans.
      Somethings are bad for dogs. You only want a tiny amount. Some dogs will puke either way. Think tip of your finger size. Not more. That's for a 50 pound small lab.
      Labs will eat ANYTHING. I've had 2, lol.
