  • It's finally DONE! Oh my word this video was a beast to edit. Last week I tried living like a 1950s housewife... but with kids! I may or may not have failed, it all depends on your perception of the week. I'm probably never going to do something like this again but it was SO fun trying, even with all of the failures and exhaustion. I'll definitely be working some of this cleaning routine into my daily life.
    The two books I used:
    America's Housekeeping Book (1953)

    This video is getting a lot of attention lately so I'd like to put out two things:
    One, I don't include my kids in my videos a lot (they're here and there, but not all the time) because I do not make them do any sort of filming with me, ever. These videos are just for fun, and aren't things I do regularly. So, those of you suggesting I include my kids in the routine more - they're not involved because this isn't my everyday life and even if it was, I wouldn't really film them unless they actively showed interest in being involved.
    Two, I do not support or endorse the toxic shaming of women for "not wanting to please their husbands/being terrible wives/having messy homes" that, thankfully, has only been smattered in a few comments here and there. I would like to very clearly state this: my husband and I work TOGETHER to create a home and in our actual daily lives he is as much a part of the routine as I am. I love the 1950s for aesthetic, and for the fun of trying these routines, but I very much do not want to live with the sexism, ignorance around mental health, racism, homophobia, lack of rights, and plentiful other things wrong with that era. It had its good things too, and I enjoy testing those good things, but there were a lot of things wrong with the era that I don't want to bring into my modern day life and for good reason.
    So in short, while these are fun to make it's not my actual life day to day, and while these routines ARE helpful and I DO implement some of them into my life as a working SAHM, my house is not run like this all the time. And, my kids don't show up helping because it's a boundary I've set for myself to respect their privacy. If they wander into a shot and enjoy it, yay! If not, I'm not going to make them be a part of my channel.

    Nope you didn't fail, I remember just how frazzled everyones mom was in the late 50s and early 60s [ I was born in 1952 ] there was no make up on moms unless they were going somewhere, I remember older moms in house dresses and head scarves and younger moms in shorts or slacks and loose shirts and all in aprons lol. Kids were told to go outside and play in all kinds of weather. And it seemed every mom did the same thing on the same day, Mondays in summer were full of wash on the line. Babies were kept in playpens and dinners were either boiled or roasted so they could cook mostly unwatched and dessert if there was one was most likely jello or canned fruit cocktail. So at least to my elderly memory you nailed it.

      I'm a 50's kid too. I forgot about us going outside so Mom could get control of things in peace, plus playing outside and going for bike rides all over town kept the toys left around the house down. She didn't have to worry about watching us outside like mom's have to do today. Sad.

    My grandmother was a 1950s housewife who had 9 children. You nailed it. She worked hard. She also gardened and bottled fruit in the fall. She sewed clothes for her children and served at church. Her glamor wasn't in how she dressed, though she was quite beautiful. It was the warmth of her home. Her success wasn't in a perfect routine or textbook house. Her triump was in raising 9 happy, healthy children and creating a comfortable, inviting home where she showed her love through her dedication. I admire her. I miss her.

    Thank you for your work on this. None of your days were a "fail". My Mom was married in 1955 after 5.5 years she had 4 small children to look after. I asked her about some of the other "day/life in 1950's videos". She laughed. No her house was not always clean, no she did not greet her husband after work in a cutesy dress! Although she did dress up and they went dancing on Saturday nights (we got the babysitter). No, the laundry was NEVER caught up... etc. This was a very realistic video .. and great camera work.

    I'm so glad you made this. All the other videos were of women without children and that really has a way of making a woman feel inadequate when they're comparing their home, time, and routine to someone without children. This seemed so much more relatable and realistic. It might not have been perfect, but it wasn't a failure by any means. It's actually given me hope that a daily routine will help me through my depression and struggles with mental illness.

    • @Lex161Lexi

      Okayy, my experience. There's already not a lot of 1950s videos as it is. But the ones that are, are women with no children or older children that are sent to school. It's just another category of struggle when handling the total needs of other humans your entire day.
      Ultimately, my conclusion to housewife + motherhood is you're either going to be so tired, you may end up getting sick (lack of self-care, low energy etc) or your schedule and home is just not going to be or look aesthetically pleasing. Things are going to have to give.

    I really appreciated this vid. My husband and I watched some done by women without children and we agreed that with kids and/or a job, it would be a LOT harder. My mom grew-up in the 50’s. She has told me parents back then didn’t interact as much with their kids. Nor did they worry all that much about the kids’ happiness. They kept their kids clean, healthy, well fed and wanted them to do well in school. But play with them? Just hang out with them? No. If it was nice weather, their mom made them stay outside all day so she could clean and keep it clean. The had a lot less clothes and hung up all school clothes as soon as they got home and switched to play clothes. Mom did laundry once a week instead of everyday like we do with all our clothes nowadays. My Nana’s house looked great, but she had a very different relationship than I did with my mom- plus, my mom worked outside the home. As much as I loved my Nana’s clean, orderly house, I’m glad I grew-up in a messy house with a mom who spent time doing stuff with us. I don’t think you can have a perfectly clean and tidy house, cook every meal AND spend much time playing/interacting with your kids. Those 1050’s schedules were made to keep women home. I’m convinced of it.

    This was so interesting to watch. I am european so some things would vary like the meals (and I’m living in Finland, dinner is around 5PM), the kids playtime as were in an apartment so must all be dressed up to go out to the park. Feels REFRESHING to hear another stay at home mom / housewife / homemaker talking about her role and work, saying you’re tired. It’s a tight subject I think as it’s a work undervalued and not taken seriously at all in my opinion. You did fantastic, very inspiring too.

      @@WithLoveKristina I did :) It is a beautiful video, really. You could have decided to show only the vintage aesthetic and cooking but by showing what the real life of a homemaker is aside from that, cleaning, fixing, rearranging, etc, you brought authenticity, it’s genuine. I love being a sahm and homemaker, and I never talk about this subject because on rare occasions I did, you can sense how poorly people think of this role, guessing it’s just being lazy watching tv all day. Well, not exactly. I feel the same regarding of being productive. When the kids nap, even if (if HAHAHA when)dead exhausted, I can’t lie down, I need to keep going, I knit; I also have noticed that if I stop moving, first I’ll feel guilty and second, the exhaustion will take over, rather than being active all day long strangely helps avoiding it.

    • @WithLoveKristina
      @WithLoveKristina  3 роки тому +8

      It really does feel like it’s still a role that is looked down upon. I think that views are changing but I get asked “yes, but what do you do for work?” ALL the time if I’m out with my kids (well, before the pandemic). There’s a mindset that all adults must hold a paying 9-5 job even if they’re parents and it has made me feel like I have to justify my motherhood by explaining that I earn money in other ways At home. I love being a mom and a SAHM regardless! A d agree, keeping moving staves off the exhaustion somehow, haha!

    • @chezperrine
      @chezperrine 3 роки тому +5

      @@WithLoveKristina I do think it’s a modern view, it used to be common, almost mandatory, all is not to throw away from back then and the view on the sahm was probably better back then. If you get a cleaner + a baby sitter and you go to work outside your home, that’s fine, but you doing those tasks and work, that’s laziness? I don’t know, people also judge with their values in mind, their expectations, experiences. There are bad and good back then and nowadays, yes there are vacuums now and dishwashers and washing machines etc, but the pressure regarding the instruction and education of the kids is, in my humble opinion, much more pressuring. We know that letting babies cry is extremely bad and can affect them neurologically, back then that was adviced, you must keep your kids occupied, you must feed them raw organic meals 5 times a day, you must shut screens, read books everyday, be careful not to use undervaluing words etc etc, the pressure is severe. It is the most important job because it’s taking care of children who hopefully will become decent human beings, my home is the safe place of my family. And there’s no salary, it’s 24/7 all year long and I’m finally coming to the point where I ain’t gonna take anymore crap and humiliating words from no one regarding my role.

    Perfect is the enemy of good. I've never seen any other 50's for a day youtubers who had kids. Yours is by far more realistic, probably even by our grandmother's standards. My first daughter was also very needy when I was an early 2000s housewife 😊, and it was so bad that the only way I could get through the day with other kids and chores was to baby-wear. I watched this while doing my chores, and it is hands down my favorite 1950s housewife video! I love it because not everything is perfect and I’m certain that real 1950s housewives weren’t perfect either and many were likely trying to live up to the books and media put out on what housewives should be like. I also think that the expectations for housewives set in the 1950s have carried throughout decades and leave most women feeling like they’re not measuring up 🙋‍♀️. Women have most likely always felt like a hot mess doing their best as the jobs of a mother and wife can be never ending and all consuming. Great job! And thank you for taking up the challenge!

    I know this is an older ish video, but you hardly failed. I think you are amazing, and beautiful, and you're family is cute as can be! It's a far more realistic life in the 50's with children than all of these other people who want the aesthetic, but won't have the kids to make messes every time you turn around. You earned yourself a new sub. 😊 Peace and blessings to you and your family.

    I don't think that you failed. I enjoy watching your videos because you start on these cleaning routines when your home is in need of a deep clean. Like mine right now. I've neglected my home for months and instead of doing all the rooms today, I did the basic kitchen clean up and now I'm working on the living room. It's OK to be human and girl, no one is perfect. Not even in the 50's.

    I thought you did well, so give yourself grace. From listening to my mom who raised children in the 1950s she would put the children to help clean. She would say “if you were old enough to make messes, you were old enough to learn to clean them up”. Make a game out of cleaning up their toys. My boy likes to beat the timer for a treat.

    I love learning things from back in the day; thank you so much for doing this video as a mom. Back than women had children and probably there were more 50s housewives who had children than they were just wives alone being able to do everything with no set backs or stopping to take care of the little ones. I just have my 2 yr old and making sure her schedule is on point while keeping my house clean is so hard but worth it; but GURL, WITH 4??! You're super women! Amazing job ! 👏

I wish she was alive today so I could show her these types of videos. Maybe my memory is wrong. LOL. I was married at 38 and no kids so I bow to all of you who have all of this work to do. Don't know how you do it. Happy family is more important then a tidy house!

    Do you want to wash the dishes 1950s style? Fill one side with hot soapy water, the other with hot water. Soak all in soap, then scrub. Rinse in the non soap side. My mom, born in 1927, washed this way. She'd dry all the dishes with dish towels and put away. I wonder why she didn't let them drip dry. I'd love more of your content

    Just got recommended this video and I have to say I appreciate it so much. I think this is the first one I have seen that actually had children in it. Okay, so, my first thought is that you're way too hard on yourself! I lost count of how many times you said "failed" or "failure". Honey, you are NOT a failure! In that same vein of thought, there's a quote by someone I've forgotten, and I've also forgotten how it really goes, but the important part is this, "life is an experiment, and the results are data. There's no such thing as failure, just data collection". I think, as mothers, we expect so much from ourselves. Especially when we've got brand new tiny humans who demand our attention 99% of the time!
    The truth is this: you did not fail. You succeeded in cleaning, feeding, and maintaining a household where everyone's needs are met, including yours. Your children also became involved in the tasks you were doing which is a huge part of a 50s housewife. Children did help. The mom wasn't expected to do it all without help!
    Overall, I'd say this was a success. I love your down-home, real-life approach to your channel. It's refreshing and endearing. You seem like someone I'd be friends with in real life. I love your home, your family, and your aesthetic. They're all so beautiful and precious! ❤❤❤

    My mother cooked tuna casserole and meatloaf during the fifties. Everyone apparently ate the same food during that decade. My mother made her casserole with Cream of Celery soup. She also added a layer of crumbled potato chips on top before she cooked the casserole. Sometimes my mother substituted the tuna with sliced hotdogs.
