Now at the tender age of 33, I am glad I found these videos to realize the importance of actual grooming and appearance. Just like the movie Matilda, learning to take care of yourself isn't a skill most people learn until their early thirties
True. As someone who does a lot of working from home, the mother's idea about keeping herself groomed to keep up her morale resonates with me. During lockdown I often didn't shower or brush my teenth before starting my workday. But in the long run, I feel more "professional" somehow when I do a normal morning routine as if I were going to the office.
People mention how young men and women were very attractive back then. Others contradict that this is attraction bias: attractive people are more likely to have their photographs distributed to the public. But I largely disagree. Walking through my college's law school and other academic departments, men and women dressed up and were well-groomed in appearance. Obesity was barely a thing, and everyone looked more mature. Then everything started goimg downhill around 1978 (hippie era), 1980's (more extreme of the hippie era, but everyone had that dahmer look), but calming back down in the 1990's and 2000's. Still evident in 2010's and 2020's but the clean looks are largely making it back
Wait what? Most people learn that as teens, my dude! And then step it up when they move to their own place between 20-28, 30+ is far too late to make that realization!
Not necessarily, I know a few people that were teenagers in the 1940's. They're old now, but definitely not dead. Heck, my grandad was 24 years old in 1949 and he's still alive and well.
I don’t think you look so bad 😂 I was thinking... maybe why a lot of older people look kind of angry is because they see how a lot of younger people dress like and behave🤔😂
Watching this gave me the motivation to wash my face, apply spf lotion, and put on lipstick, under-eye concealer, blush, and powder. I look so much better and awake, and it didn't even take that long.
That's great! Looking and feeling clean & fresh can do a lot for your self-esteem and mental health. Even just taking a shower, brushing my teeth, and doing a stretch in the morning makes the difference between a "🫠" day and a "☺️" day for me

Even though not everyone wears suits and dresses these days, it's still a good idea to be presentable. Especially if you don't want to end up being featured on People of Walmart!
‘Mother keeps a good appearance even around the house for that keeps her spirits up’ words from the wise 🙌 I only just learnt how much better I feel with a nicer outfit than gym clothes all day every day 💖
They had so little clothes in their closets... they really took care of their belongings. I wish people would do the same thing today instead of buying fast fashion! Fast fashion is so incredible bad for the environment, and also it causes things like slave labor. Having said that: I really love her outfit. That dress is really pretty! 😊
The equivalent clothing today costs a fortune. Also, we're constantly pressured to buy more new clothes..."fast fashion" didn't really take off until the 00s.
They sure did. My dad Is born 1956 and he has 5 pairs of boots/sneakers. And they are all from when he was 16. They all look better than any of the new shoes today. Prestine condition
Nowadays, feminines dress like prostitutes. They wear leggings, trousers, shorts that mark the shape of their buttocks. They also show their breasts. I like those days when feminines covered their breasts, wore gowns and skirts. They dressed modest.
It's kind of interesting how styles for men and women have changed over the years. If a woman went out looking like Sue in 2015 she would look like a grandma, but a guy could look like Don in 2015 and still be considered good looking.
I don't think so, I think Don's suit would look ridiculous on a boy his age (heck even in the video it looks like he stole it off a corpse) but Sue's dress is beautiful. Admittedly her hair is a little old fashioned but I prefer up dos anyway.
+John Smith Well men and womens fashion changes. What she's wearing wound make her look that old, but its not really in style. But a suit is classic, timeless.
just think in years to come young people in 2050 or 60 be like what did these people wear in 2016. I feel old wearing my flared jeans popular in the early 2000s now skinny jeans are in. but I say screw it I hate skinny jeans lol. I liked the girls outfit. if she had straight hair and wore flats or high heels it would be acceptable today for work or if one was a teacher.
I dress the way Sue does quite a lot. A large portion of my closet is either vintage, thrifted or inspired by it. I don't think it makes me look old, just old fashioned. Definitely doesn't blend in with the crowd though.
"sue avoids red nail polish, since it would call attention to her stubby hands" I just burst out laughing at the absolute uncalled for pitch black shade the narrate casually threw on poor sue just trying feel her best
When was the last time a teenager had shoes that needed to be hand polished or were taught how to sew? Hell most adults don’t know how to properly sew on a button. But it’s not their fault they were never taught...
I was under the impression that these were a set of twins (fraternal), hence why they double-date together, work together, and don't mind each other being in the room.
I have gone through a lot of comments and have to say that part of being well groomed is also how we all talk to each other. Crude and rude comments, off color jokes and cursing only show lack of morals and reflect on what kind of people we really are. If will stood up straight and be considerate to each other, then we just might not have the world we have today.
We should be those people who follow all of these, who knows, maybe we can return to all of these again and not be the world we are today, we can use words like swell, or golly, or groovy
I think it's interesting that nowadays we put more into the immediate desire for fashion, even if it doesn't last, and back then they actually put a huge amount of work for their every day clothes. I wish we would go back to that. I've adopted a vintage fashion, and yeah, I get weird looks, but somehow it feels really good to make my own clothes or get them at second hand stores, because everything has a story.
Grace R hey I have a vintage style too I buy my clothes from ModCloth and try to find the more vintage inspired outfits I also have 50 type dresses from Dresslily and usually get compliments when I wear them. If you like that style I say rock it!❤️
"Does this shirt go with these trousers?" I don't know, its BLACK AND WHITE! O.o "Sue has stubby hands" That she later used to throttle the snotty narrator!
Absolutely agree with you. My wife an I are passing these ways on to our granddaughters just as ours did us. Even if they don't practice them other than when they are with us at least they know how to take care of themselves
These videos are incredibly inspiring. I pared down my wardrobe and decided to buy mostly timeless looking pieces (some are true vintage too). What I notice is that the reason a lot of the older finds stand the test of time is not just the simplicity and elegance of the design (40s/50s were modest times) but also the colour choices, materials and make. I find a lot of items are natural or sturdy man-made fibres and almost everything is lined. Often all I need to do is take them to a seamstress to tailor them and fix any minor flaws and it really elevates the look.
I’ve done the same. My wardrobe, other than my skiwear, is mostly just a few pretty sweaters or classic button-down shirts, and some trousers, and three skirts. I have two dresses, one casual, and one semi formal. I hate laundry. And I hate waste.
While it's true that fashions change, being well groomed is a good habit regardless of the decade. I laugh at how many people are commenting on how long this process takes. Try timing yourself on how much time you (we!) waste watching UA-cam videos! 😁
People on average spend 3 hours or more on TikTok, its sad to think of all the other things they could have been doing instead. I'm trying to cut down my watch time on UA-cam, i'm also guilty for endlessly binging content!
Even today, dressing nice and keeping yourself clean is so important, for your physical and mental health, I find that even just putting on a nice pair of pants, a nice shirt, and a little bit of lip gloss improves my mental health drastically.
For real, as tempting as it is to throw on sweats and grab Starbucks every morning, it totally wrecks my mood. That extra 30 minutes of getting dressed, making coffee, and doing my hair and makeup makes me feel so much more energized and capable throughout the day. Plus, personally I'm at a point in my life where I'm applying to doctoral programs and spend a lot of time with professors who may be my letter of recommendation writers. I feel like I'm respecting their time and efforts more if I'm dressed as nicely as they are. That being said, I also have a lot of tattoos and piercings and unnaturally dyed hair. So I feel like it's extra important for me to be well groomed and very polite, since so many people think I'm a devil worshipper or something before getting to know me.
Making them think that appearances is the most important thing in this life? Suggesting to paint their nails, put on make up, spend all that time in front of the mirror for what? People nowadays are superficial enough, we have become a sick society where everybody only thinks for themselves...
@@martamariotto1181well we at least need to teach them to shower regularly, brush their hair and teeth, dress in something other than pajama pants (they have to scream at kids at my school to stop doing that and they still do)...respecting yourself is respecting other people. no one wants to be around a ton of smelly, unkept people.
That sounds amazing. At my prom they played hip hop and country music, and everyone was being a complete mess... bring me back to these days... I really think I would have loved so much about them. Good manners, courtesy, knowing your neighbors... dressing crisply and cleanly. These days, it seems like anything goes, which is good in some ways, but bad in others! Wish I had those memories like you do, they sound magical.
‘Mother takes care of her appearance, even around the house as it keeps up her spirits’ My Mom: if I’m not going anywhere, I can just do jobs in a hoodie and sweatpants
In 2023 I’m watching this 😂😂 I still iron my clothes for two weeks sometimes three! That’s how I grew up and never stopped. It’s easy and convenient ❤❤❤
Watching this video and reading the comments reminds me that am I the only one who keeps herself well groomed and neat? I am not surprised since I spent the early part of my childhood with my grandmother who was quite similar to Sue during her younger years. RIP grandma.
WOW!!! Aren't you a special snowflake. You actually keep yourself well groomed? OMG! JESUS CHRIST! SOMEONE CALL CNN OR FOX NEWS, THIS IS THE STORY OF THE CENTURY!!!!!! On a serious note, a LOT of people in this world keep themselves well groomed, you are not special in no way when it comes to that department.
Captain Mercurian wanna hear a joke? Two guys and a girl are stranded on a desert island. After a week or more, nature just kicked in, and you know stuff happened among the girl and the two men. But after a short amount of time the girl just felt worthless and ashamed of what she was doing that she killed herself. After a month or so, the to guys were kind of looking at each other for answers. And you know nature just kicked in, and stuff happened. But after a short amount of time the two men realised the immorality of their actions, and decided to let the corpse rest in peace
@Roger Dodger Exactly. :) Sure, you can wear whatever you like - but it is likely going to affect peoples opinion af you. And what is described is just the most basic/universally attractive color.
People are so easily offended. You got to wear stuff that accentuates your strengths and makes your less attractive qualities less noticeable. Nowadays anything goes🙄. People not wearing for their body type for instance.
"For your success depends a great deal on how you look." This is very true. We all know it, but back then they acknowledged it, and used it to their advantage. It is not about genetic beauty; it is how to make the most of what you have. To look your best. To have good style, and carry yourself in the right way. To take care of yourself, and be put together. This is respect for others and yourself, and it opens more doors for you, than if you did nothing. This is really very valuable advice, if you use it right.
I just went through some of the comments and have to say, a lot of you are making unkind "jokes" about this. I don't care if I'm different, but I LOVE THIS VIDEO and I could watch it 7 times each day without it getting old.
My dad got ready like this every morning. He was born in the late 40s. All his clothing would be neatly pressed and his shoes shinned ahead of time. He'd wake up. Shower, shave, eat breakfast and put on his clothes. In that order.
Same here. No permanent press, virtually everything needed to be pressed. No blow dryers, curling irons, microwaves. If you didn't wash and set your hair the night before you were out of luck. Not a lot of time spent on makeup, none of my friends wore it. No pants on girls for school, knee length skirts or dresses only except for gym class. No tattoos, piercings, pink or purple hair, very few pierced ears even. Girls wore flats, white tennis shoes, saddle shoes with white socks, or sandals in summer. No open campus in high school. Whole different world now. I'm glad I grew up then.
I've only ever seen my grandpa shine shoes. He did so every morning. Even if he was just chilling at home with half a grapefruit, a pack of Camel non filters, and The Price Is Right on tv. God I miss that man.
To all the people saying "I wish we still dressed like this!".... Babe, sweetie, no one is stopping you. You can wear these clothes or a slightly more modern version of them (we still have shirts, slacks and skirts) if you wanted to.
Exactly. I don’t let this stop me. It’s like people who complain that people don’t dress up to travel anymore. I do! I dress very nicely every time. I love traveling, but then again, I’m a flight attendant. And even then, I make my job glamorous. It’s all in the individual.
I was born in the 50's and it was a great time to be born. The youth and a lot of the adults now a days are terrible. They have no respect or manners. If we were to talk to ANYONE the way some of the people do today, we wouldn't be alive to tell about it.
oh man i love rewatching this videos. I first started watching old psas when I was around 19, but it helped me improve so much! I know some tips are outdated but still, most of it still applies. It's never too late!
They were not put together. They were being told they are worthless without a neat and clean appearance. No wonder homeless ppl and unfortunate ppl have been treated like shit for centuries. All thier attention is on capitalism .fancy telling ppl you need to put on clear nail paint in order to be hygienic.
I’ve noticed everyone saying the stubby hand thing was uncalled for but I think they were saying that in the first person - as in Sue believes that about herself so she doesn’t use the color to draw attention to her believes flaws. Hope everyone has a wonderful day!
If my brother came in my room and said I looked smooth, I would have screamed GET OUT NOW! Poor Sue has 3 outfits to choose from, can't take too long to get ready. And those stubby hands! How embarrassing. Mom can keep her spirits up by raiding the liquor cabinet after everyone clears out for the day. After all, she has to sleep with gramps, she needs some fortitude.
Anybody notice the glow in the dark hands on Sue's alarm clock? They were radioactive, and sitting right by her bed put out radioactive fumes for her to breathe all night long. Let's look a little more deeply before we wallow in the glories of "The Good Old Days".
@Zimmit's Fabulous Wonder Hoagies yeah they did have glow in the dark capable paint that was used on clocks, made with radium-226. It was called radioluminescent paint. It was a major problem for people who worked in clock factories. A much larger problem for most people was all the asbestos and lead pretty much everywhere. But I'm sure they thought it was fine, at least everything wasn't made with or dipped in arsenic like in the Victorian Era. 🤦♀️ Smh.
lol, believe it or not, some siblings actually do get along. I had a friend in high school whose brother was only about a year or two older than him. They often hung out together at home and rarely seemed to argue or fight.
Katy Potato Well, if they mention the girl looking good for the boys, but never give any reason other than for the boys as a motivation to look good for anyone else, it can be surmised that every in this situation is looking good for the boys.
Kat made you look did you also notice how the had manners and didn't look like they were headed off to the strip club..? I guess now days it is more important to talk the "PC Talk", than it is to represent yourself with dignity....
I wish we could go back to the days when good quality clothing was relatively affordable, easily available, could be repaired and could stand a lot of washing. I don't just mean fashionable clothes but everyday things like jeans. I live in a town in Scotland which used to have a lot of textile mills. There was a shop which off loaded cut price clothes that the mills couldn't sell to chain stores because they had minor faults (like a button out of place). You could buy clothes there which lasted for years. That was in the nineties. Sadly the mills are all gone now
@evelynwilson I agree with you. I'm always thinking those thoughts too because the shops here in Ireland have had mostly clothes in poor quality fabric for the past few years. Many smaller clothes shops have closed down since convid. Glad I found a summer dress in good quality cotton in an M&S sale last October and I was lucky to find a few denim skirts there early this summer. Apart ftom that it's been difficult to get clothes in durable, comfortable and natural material anywhere in a design that's flattering and modest with a neckline that's not too near the throat. I remember the days when every town and city had clothes shops filled with nice clothes made from good quality material with lots of cotton, linen, wool, tweed, leather, fur and others, now it's mostly nylon made from recycled plastic and other horrible fibres that feel uncomfortable to the touch. Every shopper I see approaches the garments and immediately feels them nowadays and often walks past because most people long for the natural materials of the past. Some of the clothes look lovely until you feel them and even if they feel okay and are cotton, it's usually a poor quality, semi transparent cotton that isn't going to last long. Damm the selfish rich Elites behind the UN and their Agenda 21 Plan for Sustainable Development, they'll still be eating meat, wearing leather shoes, wearing natural fabrics while flying in their private jets, while we get crammed in to cities and culled so that they can restore the land to nature.
We took good care of yourself and your clothes. Back then we had a shoe repair in our town. And we didn't have a lot of clothes. You made everything last. Don't laugh but my Grandma made a lot of our clothes, plus she made our sheets and towels too. But that was in the 60s .
@Henry Jones Jr. wish that was true! My grandparents were strict on grooming and appearance.. When my brother and I stayed with them.. Sunday morning before church.. we’d get out bed our hair disheveled sticking up like roosters ..my grandmother waiting for us at the kitchen sink .. towels a beauty shop plastic cape and shampoo hose sprayer.. she would shampoo our hair until our scalps were red and hair squeaky clean and after she dried our hair we put on our suits and grandfather would smear his vitals all over our hair and comb it perfect ...only to have our grandmother shampoo us again before bed because she didn’t want the grease on her pillows! If you could endure a hair washing by my grandmother you can endure anything ... once when we were young boys around 12 or 13 she took us to her beauty shop , we were totally bored sitting there with all the old ladies pinching our cheeks while she was under the dryer ... so she had one of the old lady helpers in the beauty shop shampoo our hair .. that was a bit embarrassing but again that was her obsession with grooming and cleanliness. Such memories

Back when siblings did the small things like polish each other's shoes and sew buttons
i gave my sibling my minecraft account. Thats about it
No way in the world my sister was going to do that for me. Visa versa on the shoes as well. She can do her own shoes just fine.
@@cityhawk
Its not about your siblings not being able to do things. Its about helping eachother.
"Health is the foundation for your appearance" they say as the camera pans towards the radium alarm clock
Imagine she wakes up and she looks like a mutant-
I have gone through a lot of comments and have to say that part of being well groomed is also how we all talk to each other. Crude and rude comments, off color jokes and cursing only show lack of morals and reflect on what kind of people we really are. If will stood up straight and be considerate to each other, then we just might not have the world we have today.
Totally agree!!!
It's true. These comments are so rude. It's fucking sickening
Jim Bailey 😂
We should be those people who follow all of these, who knows, maybe we can return to all of these again and not be the world we are today, we can use words like swell, or golly, or groovy
@@iamamousee1182 love that. So true
Poor Sue and her STUBBY hands.

👏Only allowed clear polish. Poor Sue😞.

I liked Sue's plaid skirt and blouse. Classic clothes are timeless and classy.
Love it 😍
8 hours of sleep they say. I'm happy if I manage 5
If you like that style I say rock it!❤️
Grace R, same!!
Pheobe, is that you?
To them, it wasn't second-hand or storied
I am addicted to watch these old videos teaching how to behave. It’s kind of useful sometimes even nowadays.
Agreed. Makes me want a time machine. I’d go back in a heartbeat.
I love how everything is black and white so we know exactly what colors we should and shouldn't wear

HAHAH i laughed at this
To be fair, that shirt pattern was so loud I could almost see color 😂

Cs188 brought me here. Jokes aside, it is really cool to see what grooming was like back then. People actually took care of themselves.
❤❤❤
Absolutely! Timeless clothing is really nice. There’s a reason the Ralph Lauren classic polos still look good. It’s just timeless good clothing.
As a seamstress I appreciate your comment.
Preach mate you make some good points
People on average spend 3 hours or more on TikTok, its sad to think of all the other things they could have been doing instead. I'm trying to cut down my watch time on UA-cam, i'm also guilty for endlessly binging content!
I think it's very touching how these two don't give up on school despite moving close to their their 40s.
🤣🤣
Lmao
😂😂
I don't get it. They don't look like they are in their 30s at all.
Everyone looks old on vintage videos. We associate the dated styling with being old.
Even today, dressing nice and keeping yourself clean is so important, for your physical and mental health, I find that even just putting on a nice pair of pants, a nice shirt, and a little bit of lip gloss improves my mental health drastically.
@Bobby Sands I am really happy that you are doing better now! Stay safe ^^
Same. Even on days where you are alone and don't have to meet anyone. It really does make a difference.
3:49 And the race for the bathroom is on! Sue is in the lead...

Captain Mercurian I know! Isn't it great?

@Roger Dodger Exactly. :) Sure, you can wear whatever you like - but it is likely going to affect peoples opinion af you. And what is described is just the most basic/universally attractive color.

2023: "All through the day people are looking at their phones."

It’s inspirational to some of us, and the rest just don’t get it.
I'm actually learning from this.. We've forgotten about neatness to this level.

🤣🤣🤣
@Zimmit's Fabulous Wonder Hoagies yeah they did have glow in the dark capable paint that was used on clocks, made with radium-226. It was called radioluminescent paint. It was a major problem for people who worked in clock factories. A much larger problem for most people was all the asbestos and lead pretty much everywhere. But I'm sure they thought it was fine, at least everything wasn't made with or dipped in arsenic like in the Victorian Era. 🤦♀️ Smh.

BeauSC4Ever What are you talking about? You may have a different opinion, but that's no reason to call someone undignified.
Sadly the mills are all gone now
@evelynwilson
I agree with you.
I love that dress soo much!
We need this in schools and groups .

It's swell being a guy. You wake up and your hair is already groomed for you!
