  • Dave gave blood and then gave actress Shirley Maclaine a tough time on this episode from October 4, 1988 when Maclaine appeared on the show to promote her film "Madame Sousatzka."

Madame Sousatzka. I cannot tell you how that movie has shaped my life as a music pedagogue. The music used was beautiful and heartfelt, and the performances are even more so. I totally identified with her character.

Shirley was there to talk about a new movie release, Dave was asking questions about a book Shirley previously authored.

Letterman is clearly bothered that she is not going along with his lead. Shirley is the lead. When we're all gone, Shirley will still be in film history as one of the most iconic dancers, actresses, and artists of the silver screen,

Was Shirley 54 here? Wow, she looks great - and not in a 'surgery' way, just in a naturally glowing kind of way.

And I must add 'Some Came Running'', an early heartbreaker with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.

@@theiceman6941 Good movie. I thought Audrey was a little better in that movie, but Shirley was still good as Martha. They were well cast. I need to watch that again sometime.

Shirley was and still is ahead of our time. But the lady is couragious enough to share her knowledge with us.
After experiencing supernatural phenomena myself, believe it or not, I just can tell you that she does tell us the whole truth.
Many people like David are just too afraid, or maybe much less informed, to understand the truth.

Shirley was really nice here and with Dave. He comes off as arrogant. He is no Johnny Carson. Johnny knew how to treat his guests and was funny to boot.

Brooke Hanley The ironic thing about this comment is that Dave was a personal favorite of Johnny's who had him guest host his program numerous times, literally gave Dave "Late Night" once he took control of that time slot, thought he was the real true successor to "The Tonight Show" and continued to appear in skits and write jokes for "The Late Show" long after his retirement.

@100335061281426190681 Johnny seemed to really like Dave but he made no promises of the Tonight Show to Dave. At the time I thought Dave should have gotten it over Jay. He did send jokes to Dave. Neither Jay or Dave filled the shoes of Carson ever though. Johnny was not makingNg the ultimatedecisions

I was entertained by Letterman’s show, but he is a terrible interviewer and too often makes jokes at the expense of his guests

She answered his usual ignorant questions in a great way
A mature way which isn’t the usual Letterman..A-hole way
I really can’t understand how he ever got as far as he did
Guess that’s why Johnny Carson didn’t choose him to host the Tonight show

There's nothing more infuriating than someone who insists on being WILFULLY IGNORANT. Letterman thinks he's been successful just because he's been able to extract stuff from books "out of context" and ridicule them. It shows he's successful at one thing i.e. behaving like a fool nothing else.

"You have to read the book," says Shirley MacLaine. Her whole demeanor is combative. No wonder David wants to put her in her place. (She is a guest on his show, not the other way around.)

  • @arnissa95
    @arnissa95 9 років тому +3

Besides the repeated snarks she made implying she wished David was dead, what probably pissed him off the most was when she condescendingly said "You are from Minneapolis (Wrong, Indianapolis), you are conservative". Just because he is a white guy in a tie she assumes he is conservative. David as far back as the early 80s' clearly stated that he is very liberal and very pro-labor. That assumption of her's essentially was when the gloves came off.

Maybe she didn't mean politically conservative. Perhaps she meant about new ideas.

This is the typical outcome of an aging, former attractive woman. Their looks aren't what they used to be, so they have to compensate with something else, in this case being metaphysical quackery like this.
