From the “gypsies” backing Shirley up, thank you @CBS for releasing this! It may be one of the few times Steve & I were recorded on film dancing in our prime!
This was a gift I NEVER EXPECTED TO RECEIVE. THANK YOU! I watched this special as a teenager, and reveled in the brilliance of both Ms. MacLaine and Miss Ball. Over the years, I've seen snippets of it posted on UA-cam, but never the ENTIRE performance. This is just incredible. You made this 60 year old man VERY HAPPY tonight. I don't think it's been available (ANYWHERE) until now. I'm alerting all my friends to revel in this excellence while it's here to be enjoyed. Again, THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU.
1st time seeing this since it was originally broadcast. This was shortly after Shirley had finished her tour in 1977.Saw her soooo many times at the Palace Theatre in NYC. She was a doll. Always left tickets for me. Now, haven't seen her in years!!!!!! Talent.
Unfortunately, the serious accident skiing, which broke one leg in four places, held up making Mame for over a year. It took a lot to get back to a place where she could dance, which she adequately did, but somehow her singing voice was worse, so she sang/talked which was ok with me but the critics panned it.
They were both huge talents. Yes, Lucy excelled at comedy but she had dramatic gifts - she just didn’t get many chances to display them. Best example is her performance in the film, THE BIG STREET. Neither lady is a great singer - although Shirley can handle a song and Lucy really struggled with that. Dancewise, Lucy was no slouch - but Shirley was clearly a hoofer, famously getting her start when she was called upon to go on for Carol Haney in THE PAJAMA GAME on Broadway. I see no real need to compare them, but you shortchange Lucy when you label her a “comedian” Shirley certainly deserves to be lauded as a big film star, but Lucy is on the list of the greatest entertainers of all time - and she led the way for other larger than life talents like Carol Burnett, Lily Tomlin and Madeleine Kahn.
@@Gary_Jaffe totally agree - I know of Lucy’s full career, I was just referring to the fact they were doing a musical hour I assume on CBS since Lucy was contracted with them for quite some time after her last show ended in 1974. I agree with all you said and thanks for taking the time for giving more specifics.
Shirley was golden, but Lucy was PLATINUM. This was one of her last HURRAHS... and being able to see it again (after 45 years) is a gift beyond measure.
@@Gary_Jaffe Lucy was in many good films other than comedies - I think maybe 60-70 films. Loved her in Dance, Girl, Dance (did her own signing in that one; also loved her in Lured and The Dark Corner b/w dramas.) She had ok singing voice till her 60's. Even in Mame her she sang/talked but I loved her in it. Reminded me of Rex Harrison sing/talk his role in My Fair Lady.
Shirley reinvented herself and reignited her career in the 1970s. She had a great movie career throughout the 1960s. It crashed in 1969 after Sweet Charity. Maclaine was overweight. She made a great deal with ABC TV for her own series in 1971 or 1972. The movies were in crisis and the great movie studios were crumbling. TV networks corralled many movie stars into series. Maclaine, Jimmy Stewart, and Henry Fonda all bombed. Their shows were awful. Shirley exercised, lost weight, started positive thinking, went on a spiritual quest. Shirley developed her own song and dance act. She was a smash in Vegas, London, and took her show to the Palace on Broadway. She made her way back into films as an older woman. She continued her movie career and made many, many more films. She wrote six or seven books. Her creative output has been prolific. Shirley worked hard and took a positive path. She did not descend into alcohol or drugs. She pretty much kept mum about any personal problems. She had her own website for 25 years and did independent radio broadcasts for years. I don't know of any other performer whose work has been so prolific. Streisand is the only other one that I can think of. Both Shirley and Barbara were born under the sign of Taurus.
There is a promo for it towards the end of the CBS coverage of Super Bowl X (Steelers/Cowboys) which was held in January 1976 and uploaded to UA-cam. But the voiceover promo at the end of this tape mentions Lou Grant which didn't debut until the 1977-78 season, so this specific tape must be from a 1978 repeat airing.
Lucy used comedy to mask her insecurities. She admitted on numerous occasions that her "Lucisms" shined through regardless of the role; I respectfully agree Buster Keaton, Red Skelton were her mentors. There will never be another "I love Lucy".

Greatly deserved the Emmy this brought to Shirley and the producers. One of the classic variety specials of the 1970s. So glad to see it again.

Were u one of her backup dancers?
Yup - wearing the Big 6 in rehearsals at the top. Hubby is there also. Filmed over Xmas one year.
@@DenisePence that’s awesome! You guys were great! I would have loved to see Lucy in person! She has always been my favorite!
Wyetta Turner was my mother in law. She was the female dancer with the Afro hair style.
@@wendycarter416 We LOVED Wyetta!! Passed waaaay too young!
Lucy was 67 years old when she made this TV special. Shirley was 44. Amazing.
She was still fairly young here at 44 .She looks in fantastic shape .
Hard to believe she's 87 years old now

So glad you recommended this show. Such beautiful performers.
Thank you so much for this!! I love seeing Lucille Ball. She looked gorgeous and seeing her at age 66-67 she was fantastic. THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!
Lucy died 10 years later age 77
Absolutely! She was beautiful and funny!
I love this. I saw her stage show years ago in Houston. It was fabulous.

What a hoofer 👏
Lucy still had great gams.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Vejo trechos desse show, e adorei ver inteiro. No Brasil nessa época aí começaram uns especiais com esse formato, foram muito bons também
Can't be 1978 since it won the Emmy for best special in 1976
Aired January 20, 1976. Taped January 11-12, 1976.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Veryveryverygood ❤❤❤
Redheads are something else! Love these talented gypsy souls
Interesting that this is four years after "Mame," and Lucy is just now showing the moxie she sorely needed then.

Shirley Maclaine é ótima! Que talento!
Lucille ❤❤❤
Very sweet program. Good attitudes throughout
Enjoyed!
MacLaine was so talented. Lucy was good but she was a comedian after all

43:00 the old lady in orange was probably a chorus girl in the 1920s

Julie Andrews did ok for herself and still is. Turning 86 10/1 and still going strong.
Wow. You've really got your history down! Thank you for the lesson!

I loved her Charlie Chaplin bit - omg she looked like and walked like him. Always wish the skit was longer.
why can't I hear anything???
4:30 she got lost with the choreo

Was the audience just an audience or were they a specially drafted in audience who could dance? Lol
Hired audience. Many were "gypsies." In fact, Lisa Brown who made history as "Nola" in Guiding Light (with me) was in that audience.
This is really bad.
