    So tasty! Like drinking cherry juice! I was really anti wheat for a while, but Maker's Cask strength and this have turned me back around!

    Interesting that an offering in the Distiller's series is being offered at that price. It was clearly well thought out and highly regarded as a concept and an experiment. Yet the $35 price probably reflects their sales projection that a wheat whiskey may not sell that well. So it is essentially an introductory offering to tantalize and attract sales. If successful look forward to increased prices. Meantime, you've convinced me. Gonna try it.

    So, in other words, it’s a great 4 grain wheat whiskey! I think Bernheim is about the same wheat content, but more corn and no rye. I picked up a bottle of this a few days ago, and now your review has me anxious to open it up and give it a try sooner than later. Cheers!

    I'm tasting them side by side now - had a mini of regular WR bourbon and a bottle of "straight wheat" and "straight malt". I'm learning several things :) 1. WR is not my whiskey, even though the geek in me wanted to try these, I won't be buying any more (including the rye). Maybe their proof is wrong for the profile, I find the strength lacking while the wood notes are astringent and sharp, as if the barrels imparted their tannins without flavor 2. mash bills are not a "recipe" and they don't matter as much as sometimes thought. All three of these would come across as "bourbon" in a blind tasting. If anything, the "wheat" and the "malt" make for a slightly better tasting "bourbon" than the bourbon proper. 3. These don't take water well at all. No regrets, I'm glad I tried them. 4. Finally I mixed all three of them in one glass and the new "blend" was maybe just slightly juicier but still woodfordy and tannic. All lessons are valuable lessons if they're meaningful :)

    So I went back and tried my bottle again..its been opening up for a few weeks and has improved slightly..better integration..think it would be really great with a little more age on it..that light oak note is welcomed here but I may try dropping in a spiral to pronounce it :)

    Why was Weller, Larceny or Old Fitz not mentioned as a wheat bourbon? How do they stack up?

    • @TheMashandDrum
      @TheMashandDrum  5 років тому +8

      This isn't a wheated bourbon like Weller, Larceny or Old Fitz. Those bottles still have at least 51% Corn to be called a bourbon. The Woodford Reserve is 52% Wheat and only 20% corn so you can't call it bourbon therefore it's a Wheat Whiskey like Bernheim. Its way more fruity than a typical wheated bourbon but does have some characteristics of woodford reserve bourbon in the finish. Weller, Larceny and Old fitz are classic wheated bourbon flavors with oak, corn, caramel and vanillas which is a diffent flavor profile than the wheated whiskey.

  • @jeffberner992

    I know it’s whiskey:bourbon ,but with similar price points, this or Maker’s 46?

    • @TheMashandDrum
      @TheMashandDrum  4 роки тому

      Hmmm. It really depends what you like. They are both really different. If you like really fruity bourbons then the Woodford. If you like a bit darker, spicier, more oak then definitely the 46. Right now I would lean towards the 46 because it's getting colder out. The Woodford to me is kind of a summer whiskey being so fruity.

    • @jasonw429
      @jasonw429 5 років тому

      Maybe it’s because it’s too fruit forward. I have all kinds of Wheaters from Weller to Redemption to Rebel Yell 10 yr. This was my least favorite. I am sure you can agree when you have 50 plus in your collection you don’t need one taking up room. I am sure that Basil Hayden pancake syrup rum crap might be in your basement closet?

    • @TheMashandDrum
      @TheMashandDrum  5 років тому

      @@jasonw429 well remember. This is not a wheated bourbon...this is a wheated Whiskey. There's way more wheat than corn so it's different. Way more fruit forward
