Thanks for the video. I thought all along that outboard motors are easier to maintain than onboard, I guess I was wrong. Been staying away from a lot of great deals on boats around here that has onboard motor because of the fact that I was told theyre harder to winterize, This video shows that winterizing outboard motors are about the same time wise as onboard done properly

It’s also a good idea to remove the prop and check for anything wound onto the shaft. Also, lubricate the prop shaft. There are few things more frustrating than a stuck prop.

Great video. I have a 2003 Merc 60 4 stroke on my 1963 Thompson SeaCoaster. For all these years I've winterized it just like you showed in your video. Lately I read on a website that 4 strokes should be stored with the engine tilted on a 45 degree angle, supposedly so the oil in the sump doesn't rest on the piston rings....which in their opinion would lead to oil burning. I have no idea if this is true, or even makes sense. I never did this with mine and would like your opinion.....Thanks alot!

Great video... thanks just what I needed as I have a new 4 stroke for the first time. I'm not sure I want to mix 20 litres of gas with that 2 cycle oil mixture for winterizing just my outboard. Sounds more like something a marine repair shop might keep on hand for doing all their winterizing. I guess just figure out the mix for 1 or half litre of gas?

You just need to get a bottle of fogging oil for your engine and cut the number down. I have a single engine Yamaha, I fog with a half bottle of fogging oil and 1 gallon of gas mixed, run it through the fuel line direct to engine. Other videos on YT can show you how.

Great video!! Followed everything to the letter. As far as the “mix”. I never got blue smoke and ran it for over 10 minutes. I liter of 2 stroke oil in 3 gallons (12 liters)of pure gas. Should I have run it longer?

1 liter of 2 cycle oil in 5 gallons of fuel is waaaaay too much oil in the fuel. you only need a few ounces of 2 cyl oil in a 5 gallon take, 100:1 is good.

As a new owner of an ob boat (50h Merc 4s) it would help me to know "why" things are done, regardless of any "obvious" reasons because assuming may lead to omission. IE. I'm in Central NYS and I use ONLY non-ethanol gas so, what might I need or need not do?

Do you have to drain any water out of the motor at all? If so how do you do that? Or will gravity just drain the water if left in a vertical position? Trying to winterize my motor for the first time this year and maximize my time on the water so left it a bit late lol. Thanks in advance if someone sees this and can help asap.

AdvOutdoors I just did mine last week before those few really cold days. I just drained out lower unit and top end oil and replaced with new oil then left the motor in the down position so any water in it drained out. Didn't worry about the fuel since I keep my tanks inside for the winter and I use premium gas so I shouldn't need to worry about it breaking down over 4 months. Luckily my dad's buddy has a similar outboard so he told me what to do. Hopefully this helps you out.

    • @KnarBurger
      @KnarBurger 6 років тому +1

AdvOutdoors and do not mix oil into your 4 stroke fuel, not sure why this guy said to do that. From what I have heard it is not good for your engine to do it. Probably ok to do it once or twice but not a good long term solution. Better just to keep it full of regular fuel because that alone should keep seals from drying out. Plus with premium as long as it is low ethanol you don't really have to worry about it breaking down at all and unless it's gonna hit like -40c it shouldn't freeze.

you never said a word about how to assure all the coolant passages and hoses are emptied. Not one damn word, and that was my biggest reason for watching. The video was a good effort, but without the mention of protecting the engine from freezing in cold storage, I do not recommend this video for Northerners. I am a new boat owner and have no knowledge of the schematic of the water coolant passages. Am I supposed to just guess that my engine wont freeze? I am looking at this engine, and being completely green to marine engines, I find myself guessing where the water flows through. A mention of these things for winterizing in the north was not even covered. Not one word.

Absolute trash video, please don’t follow these steps.
Do you guys run 2 stroke mix in your cars for winter storage or 2-3 months not driving ? So dumb.
Basic winterize process (similar for 4 stroke jet skis for years)
    - add marine stabilizer to full tank of gas before start
    - check bottom end gear oil for water content if milky
    - oil change optional (better in spring)
    - run rv pink antifreeze on water lines with engine running - outboards usually Auto drain but it’s good measure for freezing climates if pump has water
    - remove spark plugs, fog oil into cylinder holes, spin it a few times, add fogging oil for a few seconds
    - add plugs back in, hand tight plugs
    - DONE
    - spring time: tighten plugs, oil change, ready to rock

100% agree with this. I bought a brand new 9.9HP Mercury this year. Only thing I don't know how to do is run the pink RV antifreeze through it. Any idea? I live in Michigan so figured it's a good idea.

    • @oneeyedrone4293

      @@keithzastrow outboards usually self drain.
You can use a funnel and a short piece of hose to those water ear suction cups. Then pour pink stuff into funnel with engine running.

@oneeyedrone4293 That's what I do to winterize my ski boat (1996 Moomba with a 351 Ford Windsor). I just don't know where that's all at on this outboard. I'll have to read my manual and see if I can figure it out. Thanks.

When you are fogging each cylinder I am assuming all the spark plugs are removed (I am not a mechanic)? Why is it better to change the oil in the spring? Why hand tight the plugs in the fall and then tighten in the spring? Thanks!
