Ye, I would like to see more clinching too! We still haven't seen a really strong muay thai clinch game in MMA and I think it would be really effective. I think superlek does a really good job of striking before the clinch and grabbing at the arms etc but I think there would be better style clashes with more extended grappling. Thanks for commenting

I don't mind the 4 ounce gloves and even the limited clinching. But I absolutely hate it when the refs don't allow fighters to download information and force them to brawl. Also, I don't like how fighters who fight on the backfoot are less favoured in terms of scoring. Due to this technical back foot fighters like Nong-O had to completely change their style to an aggressive front foot style.

Muay Khao: clinch-heavy style that specializes in knees, often stifling the opponent’s attacks & controlling their balance.
Muay Tae: kicking specialists. They tend to snipe, or smash, with kicks from the outside. They often have versatile teeps, great lateral movement, and powerful kicks
Muay Sok: elbow-heavy style that relies on timing and distance-management on the outside, and very active clinching on the inside to smash & cut their opponents with elbows.

Still, deep down, we all know that for MT to grow globally, it has to evolve, and as people from all over the world started to train in MT, the innovative contribution is bound to happen. I think a lot about this actaully so I was excited to see a video about this particular niche.
The other thing that concerns me is not so much the evolution of what goes on in the ring if it were limited to that. My bigger concern is the evolution of training in this sport.
Many of the champions in ONE have a traditionalist training background that is highly focused on fundamentals and proper technique (pretty muay thai)
When they fight in ONE it's just at a much higher pace and more aggressive but almost all the fighters are still highly skilled and have great technique.
However I think as time goes on the training and coaching may become more lackluster as damage and aggression will be the priority and it will end up looking more like Muay Thai in the USA where to put it simply from a reddit comment I saw a while back:
"Muay Thai in the US is a ruleset and not a style"
and we'll just end up getting brawls and not proper fights.

I don't think it destroys the traditional Muay Thai, like you said at the end of the video it brings more eyes to both ONE and the RWS.
Although the "really elite" femur are rare in ONE, and those tends to be the champions. Being good in both Femur AND good with hands in 4oz gloves is essentially what is gonna get you into the big league. While those who only walks forward and swinging, even though they get a lot of KOs, they often lack defence in the exchange and are prone to being KO'd themselves. We see many instances of a comeback.
Rodtang, Haggerty and Superlek, these are my top 3 as they can be on the back foot and countering, or walks forward while being defensively sound.
Superlek vs Tagir I still rewatch many times to this days because of Superlek's elbows.
The pulling down the guard for opening for the elbows, pushing the guards on Tagir to bounce him off the ropes and chuck the elbows.
To me it did not look like a fight, but rather a murder attempt by Superlek.
The way he leans forward to put every single ounce behind the chucking elbow is just brutal.

Also noticed that the Thai crowd at One shows in Lumpinee were younger than ones in Rajadamnern. It's possible that the One style of Muay Thai appeals to a younger Thai audience, not just international audiences.

as thai who train couple days a week. i love one's rule it force the fight to be more realistic after all MT suppose to be martial art that can be use in irl, but it need couple of adjustment, first is don't make ref force the action it will be more realistic because if you were to get caught in street fight you would fight at your own pace and only your opps can change that by being aggresive, next one is longer clinch time, it give more time for fighter to show skill in the clinch, last point is score base on damage not matter back foot or front foot if you give you opps damage you are wining. i think that this is a evolution MT going through it will force triditional muay thai with no boxing defence, no headmovement to improve and will make muay thai wayyy better in self defence overall because fighter force to be will rounded not only kick and pull back or hide behind big glove when punch come.

The clinch and the Ram Muay are what makes Muay Thai truly distinctive from other styles. Imo anything that reduces the clinch work during the fight is a big step in the wrong direction. MT is very much a cultural activity and the Ram Muay is an important part of that. I understand maybe not televising it, maybe, but I dont think you should expect Thais to fight without it being performed. For judging I also think the traditional perspective about things like balance and ring control is a superior, more sophisticated way to evaluate the fight. Factors like the gloves and the cage are much less important imo.

great vid which makes a great observation. I was wondering about this the last few days.
ONE FC fights are fast paced with a high KO ratio. but it's started to look more like kickboxing at times.
I used to get bored when fights were clinch heavy (muay khao) but now I understand that aspect better, I've come to appreciate it more and appreciate the slow build up more. fighters really test each other out to determine a strategy and tactics. you can see more of the subtleties and thinking behind certain moves.
I'll still watch ONE FC definitely (Glory has lost its appeal) but I've found I'm looking more and more for the more traditional fights in Thailand. like the fight between Rodtang and Kaonah. Kaonah won that one by shutting down Rodtang with his patient muay femur style and it was great to watch.

The smaller gloves are a disaster for fighter's health. At least let them clinch until someone breaks free, not after 2 seconds. Or 5 rounds so they don't sprint so hard n have to be more technical.

Ye I think the long term reprocussions won't be seen for a few years but it could be bad. I feel like the rules encourage targeting the head a lot more where as in traditional muay thai the targets are more spread because body kicks and knees are highly rewarded. I think fighters careers will be drastically shortened having a lot of fights in ONE but if they can make 10-20x more money then it's probably worth it for them

    • @paparadeliko

I believe that too. More money makes it okayish. BUT if the thais don't evolve and adapt to these new rules, they r gonna go back to their countries making even less after they get wrecked in one by the 4oz. Just like it happened with many of them, brutal kos.
Then they lose that status and respect of "being the best" with their national titles as in a few years they won't mean much.

It's detrimental to the fighter's health and it does not develop or grow the style.
Golden age Muay Thai was VERY different. They are called Muay Femur. They follow the "hit but don't get hit" style. It's a lot more skillful, technical and it's very artistic.
Saenchai, Lerdsila, Samart, Somrak etc are all Muay Femur fighters. They use a lot of timing, deception, guile, faints and agility.

Not to mention why they seem to prefer a back foot/counter attack style instead of just going forward like their opponents.
I guess that’s an adjustment that’s harder for Thais especially since they are so used to the traditional Muay Thai rules and have been doing that for so long, hence having to readjust something that’s like muscle memory to them needs alot more time.

I am probably biased, I only consistently started watching muay thai on a weekly basis after seeing it in ONE, that said, I LOVED IT and started watching old fights classic matches and basically watching any muay thai I could get my hands on.
My opinion it that stadium is more tactical and some might say more technical, but there are often significant luls in combat, first rounds where neither fighter engages significantly due to historical betting stage closing after round one, as mentioned in the video.. the is a lot of Backfoot fighting that involves keeping a more aggressive fighter at bay with teens and movement and right cutoff/ controls is key
ONE 4 OZ gloves and ruleset is geared to excitement and entertainment, not the technical beauty of the sport as an art form, and it achieves the goal fairly effectively, and when it it paired with the octagon the lack of corners in the ring balances that ruleset well still allowing for some evasion and distance control fighting ( as opposed to traditional square ring)
I don't think that this newer ruleset has fully matured i have been watching the META advance in real-time as the fighters explore adjust to it and I think it may be very interesting to see how it evelves.. and what small tweaks will have to be done to the rules in the future as it reaches maturity
The only thing that I actually see as Potentially detrimental is the long term effects on fighters career longevity, between the broken bones and higher amount of KO finishes i am not sure fighting in this second style will be as sustainable as stadium champs who fight deep into their careers and still appear sharp, intelligible and functional. Not punch drunk like some of the ufc legends are.
Guys like Rodtang will kind of bee our road map for tjis, but sadly by the time this becomes clear an entire generation of much younger fighters will have come up training in and prepping with/ for 4 OZ gloves and that might be a very sad story
Entertainment wise.. its spectacular that is for sure has MMA beat by a country mile for excitement.

  • @samjohnsonkb

It's not Muay Thai, it's misusing the name of the sport to push their product. When I trained in Thailand (haven't been there since 2019), every Thai coach and Thai fighter I talked to viewed promotions like MX Muay Xtreme, Muay Hardcore, and now ONE, as fighting shows that were explicitly not Muay Thai, and made to entertain tourists. I'm not surprised that all of these would-be (or actual) tourists prefer the slop ONE feeds them to the actual sport. They don't care about the actual sport and have no understanding of how it works, and usually, what it even looks like. Changing the rules, equipment, and scoring makes it a different sport altogether. Something between Muay Thai and Kickboxing, but with none of the good parts of either and all of the bullshit that comes with MMA fans bringing their sport's dogshit culture into the Muay Thai scene and calling it "the future"

I got into Muay Thai via One Championship Muay Thai, even started practicing it have been doing it 2-3 times a week for nearly two years now. As I got more into Muay Thai, I actually began to prefer the traditional stadium Muay Thai. I still love watching One FC, but much prefer the more traditional stuff now.

  • @nhlfan1001

I prefer ONE's scoring system. It's similar to what's seen in boxing and MMA and just makes more sense to me while being more entertaining (to me).
I don't understand the purpose of taking away the clinch. That's just kickboxing with elbows. Which makes no sense since ONE has kickboxing too. And there's nothing wrong with kickboxing, but the clinch is arguably THE thing that differentiates the two sports
While MMA gloves could in theory make someone punch harder, that isn't always the case. Boxers hit harder than MMA fighters because they wear boxing gloves and can hit as hard as they want without injuring their hands. Boxing gloves originally lead to an increase in kos since prior fighters used to fight very defensively to protect their hands. I prefer the MMA gloves if there's a strong clinch game since those gloves are designed specifically for that in the first place, but prefer boxing gloves otherwise. From a fan perspective I also just think there's something aesthetically pleasing about boxing gloves. I also think boxing rings are better for fans especially inside the arena. However, ONE often puts MT Kickboxing MMA and grappling all on the same card and I can understand why a cage would be necessary to prevent grapplers from falling out of the ring
Edit: I think maybe the fact that ONE has kickboxing and muay thai might be the real reason they make the MT guys wear MMA gloves. So that the fans perceive them as two different sports.

I think Muaythai rules are respected in fewer organizations even with gloves. It’s mainly respected for 1st two round slow and rest 3 with more weight mainly in Thailand or Thai organizations. But other Muay Thai organizations abroad you’ll find one guy fighting pure Muay Thai while his opponent is heavy kickboxing style with high pace. One champion ship came later and made a business model of what can sell for Muaythai

It’s a dying art and even watching my mates fights and seeing friends at the gym I train at fight the art of clinch isn’t being used to its full potential and as a result isn’t being taught as much as it should be.

I think ONE rules expose who the real femeuh vs. muay maht fighters are. Many, many muay thai fighters are muay maht. You can even say the majority. They were hiding behind the bigger gloves( maybe hiding is the wrong word) and able to look more technical.
Let's take a look at real femeuh, like Saenchai, although he's not going to fight in one, but i don't think the small gloves will make him a punch heavy brawler. Sam A, Petchmorakot, Superlek, Panpayak, Sagetdao, to name a few who are real femeuh.
But yeah, calling ONE muay thai might be ugly to the purest, so should they just call it ONE Striking? Personally I enjoy it. Fighting has evolved and soon, the fighters and camps will adjust to the punch heavy styles. One is starting to allow more active clinching lately.
    The Teep is so underrated.

This is really well put. Saenchai is a one in a million fighter, so I think he can fight in pretty much any rule set and do really well. I really enjoy ONE but when I'm 3 back to back first round knockouts in I can start to feel the damage through the screen 😂. I like style clashes and seeing people figure each other out and I think that aspect can get a little lost in the chaos of 4oz gloves and bonus chasing. Thank you for commenting, appreciate it 🙏

It’s not traditional stadium Muay Thai but overall I like it and the opportunity it presents for established fighters to make a decent living and get the recognition they deserve.
It’s definitely more incentivized for headhunting and the pace is different, which really is killing the chess game that Golden Era Muay Thai was, however.

i prefer the one rules, where damage is more important, although i wouldn't score punches more than kicks and i would only score effective aggression not just trucking forward and i also don't mind the small gloves. what i really hate is how much out of their way one goes to make a muay thai fight into a brawl, with refs forcing everyone to trade at all times and with the clinch being broken in nanoseconds. the clinch is one of the most important aspects of muay thai and one has basically banned it, like wtf?
