DDP is one of those odd fighters that has a style which fits his body type. He's not as wild as he was but he still throws spinning back fists for fun. He has a decent jab and his grappling is crazy good, you can see he has unnatural upper body strength and uses it perfectly to smother and break opponents on the ground.
There's something in the freestyle nature of his fighting, that his mind is freed up to concentrate on what is happening in the moment, and zero space is wasted worrying about where his feet are. The opportunity for the strike presents... he can throw it, no matter where he is in relation to his opponent. You break down the pros and cons of that... but how many fights do we watch where they just can't break the straightjacket they appear to be in, and fight winds down to a lacklustre decision, against the guy who said so much before the fight, but couldn't break free, couldn't think outside the box. It highlights the intellectual aspect of fighting. And the luck of where you were when you first started training and being coached. The coach who forces technique upon his charge, and they still end up nowhere, the coach who lets them be, as long as they show the ability to win... the perfect mix... harder to find. Indeed, the fighter who has the presence of mind to target Dricus's flaws, withstanding what is being done to them, willing to take the damage, and get him with the counters... Adesanya's style plays right into that... he'll take the hits to get that counter. I really like Dricus the Champion. The belt is in solid hands, with him... please don't walk into an Adesanya special.
Excellent analysis! He is in the moment and actually fighting the guy he’s facing. Former training partners have said his physicality is just difficult to deal with. I think he’s really in there connecting with the other guys energy, not his stance, and keeps attacking until the guy gets caught.
He's clearly physically superior to most of his rivals. Being one of the heaviest MW also helps, but he clearly has some special strength. Robert Whittaker took him down, but he stood up with ease. When he took Whittaker down, he manhandled him. I don’t think he’ll take Adesanya down easily, but he gets a hold of him on the ground he’s going to rearrange his face with elbows. At the same time, if Adesanya comes to the fight as his old self, I can see him leg kicking from distance, timing the blitz and countering him hard. It’s going to be an interesting one.
@@damienoptc7222He was a bit heavier, yeah. But Pereira must have been THE heaviest MW when he was fighting there, and he was that heavy without even carrying too much muscle mass. He's just a natural LHW, and even there he's bigger than most. Costa or DDP fight at 212-215 because they have a lot of muscle, but neither of them have a frame big enough for LHW.
A new analysis of Dricus specially in regard to his fight with Izzy would be interesting, as I think you left somethings out and/or got a few things wrong here, but mostly I agree with the overall flaws you point out in his style.
Been following him for many many years before he went over to the ufc and he has never been the prettiest or most traditional fighter ever ...however he has never stayed stagnant and has changed and adapted over the years. He has an insane jaw and tough as they come ,so time will see . Although Izzy has the more appealing fight technique, he will still need to work hard to get that W . There is a reason that between kickboxing and MMA , Du Plessis has a record or something like 55/56 fights with 2 losses only . The guy has heart and just doesn't give up
Sean isn’t done lol. Remember when he lost to Alex and then started training with him and it helped him during the Izzy fight? He’s still improving too.
DDPs style of fighting is like a regular South African's style of fighting but thought out,if you've stayed in SA and witnessed some random street fights you'd get what im saying. Very ugly but effective
Most of all, DDP, if you noticed, fights/strikes going backwards while his opponent is chasing him. This allows DDP to time his counter-punches and use his check-hook strike, about time he's backed up to the cage. In that specific scanario, DDP uses the check-hook strike like how a Boxer would use it.💯
When Du Plessis blitzes he is not going straight forward, so he wouldn't want his feet doing this. The net movement is forward but each step is on an angle. The weight being transferred from one foot to the other. If you were to draw these lines you would see that the weight transfer lines actually zig zag forward.
Dricus is just a pure warrior. I have a friend who used to train with him in his earlier years. The guy always said that his physicality feels unnatural to deal with.
The "Pro's" seem to struggle against the "Bliksem". Perhaps less tatoo's, pink nails and face paint for the "Pro's". DDP showing what a man with heart can do.
Let's say his striking is adequate but his strategy is 1st class..!! He simply throws caution to the wind because his Judo & Wrestling are so good..!! He can rely on them if he gets in trouble..!! Not to mention, if he runs out of gas, he's got a full tank of HEART..!! Put it all together and you have a serious warrior..!! It's going to take another high level Judoka/Wrestler with the same or better striking and heart to beat him..!!
Dricus is built like a tank, with banana peels on his feet, but actually has gameplans, something of a middleweight rarity. Also, can we get a Ryuki Matsuda vs Khunsueklek analysis?

I feel like I can answer this question without watching most of the video. If you look at every completely dominant champion, they have unbelievably solid foundationals AND great tactics. If you look at every paper champion, they have lackluster, goofy foundations but good tactics. So you can't win a fight on technique alone, but good tactics with great technique beat tactics every time.
