The first time I saw this movie I was six years old lying in a hospital with meningitis. The moment I heard Judy sing "Show me the way to all my dreams" may have saved my life.
I came across this by accident as a child and was mesmerized. My own children were fascinated too. We named our silver Persian Mewsette. And now I have two cats, Jean-Tom and Robespierre. And still watch the movie
The first time I saw this movie, I got it for Christmas as a small child when I told my mom "I wanted the movie about a white girl cat and a yellow boy cat". She didn't understand that I was talking about Disney's Aristocats. But I fell in love with this movie too and it's definitely underappreciated! I still have my vhs copy of this movie ♥️
Her final resting place is now at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. Her children legally transferred her coffin from Hartsdale, New York's Ferncliff Cemetery last year.
i remember being hypnotized by this movie! my dad recorded it for me and i ended up breaking the vcr i watched it so much...i love all of the Impressionist art!!
Aside from Judy Garland as the beautiful speaking and singing voice of Mewsette, we also hear accomplished voice actresses Joan Gardner as Jeunesse and Julie Bennett as Marie. The song involves some completely artistic visuals as do all the other musical numbers in the film. In the days of pre-cable tv some of these songs were criminally cut for tv prints, but thank goodness we’re past that. It may have been risky to have a ballad so early on in the script as with “Over the Rainbow” in “The Wizard of Oz” written by the same team of Harold Arlen and EY Harburg 23 yrs earlier, and that song was almost cut from that film during production, but we all know the final outcome as it became Judy’s signature song. She would, however, sing some of the songs later from “Gay Purr-ee” in her concerts and appearances. The film was by UPA but involved many artists from various studios and periods of animation history, including Chuck Jones from Warner Bros. who with his wife had written the script. He was subsequently dismissed from Warners for moonlighting outside his contract but ironically Warners wound up being distributors for the film! Many years later of course after his other successes Warner Bros. invited Jones to return. “Gay Purr-ee” has since found sort of a cult following on tv and video but is best seen of course on a big screen so it deserves more cinema revival showings.

Esta pelicula a sido nuestra favorita. La disfrutamos viendola mis nietos y yo asta este dia seguimos recordando esos bellos recuerdos que pasamos juntos disfrutando esta pelicula😄😄
I used to watch this movie so much with my mother! She loves this movie and ive never understood it, im going to watch it again soon! I love this movie so much
I watched this for the first time when I was like six, we had rented it while at my aunt's. And every time we visited after that I rented it. Then the video store was going out of business and as luck would have it I was able to buy it from them. Love this movie.
Am with the sister on this one, there is no shame in choosing the life in the country Its peaceful you have a closer connection to the community of people, plus its not like you cant injoy paris food or champain in farm kitchens
Marie and Jenée, two sisters who lived together in Paris when they were young. Later, but still quite a time before the movie starts, Marie chose the simple life of a farmer, while Jenée stayed in Paris.
@@KitsunenoHibi Actually it’s Marie (Julie Bennett) and Jeunesse (Joan Gardner)…Jeunesse has her name on the trunk in the carriage that Mewsette will later stowaway in during the following scene.
Quick question how many of you people thought this movie was about lesbians before watching because your not alone, turns the word gay has a different meaning in France.
I still have this movie on VHS. It's a shame it's not so well known now. It has great animation and interesting characters. It also has some of the best songs Judy Garland has ever had the privilege to sing.
Lots of other art history references throughout the film (like the gloomy winter sequence designed in Bernard Buffet's style), plus a whole scene with overt art parodies.
I miss when movies, especially animated movies, could just stop and do these extended abstract scenes. Enough movies these days are mostly spectacle anyway, why not have scenes like this?
The entire *movie* was done by hand, frame by frame. It's animation (traditional ink and paint animation from the 1960s). But I'm sure special care was taken for certain visual effects like that kaleidoscope movement you refer to.
Not much there to translate, really. It's mostly names of famous places in Paris. "C'est la vie" means "this is life". This was Judy Garland's first and only animated film that she did. And I must say she did a fabulous job(as always)!
Her final resting place is now at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. Her children legally transferred her coffin from Hartsdale, New York's Ferncliff Cemetery last year.
Mewsette is very cute🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

Same with me!! My mom didn’t like cartoons so she missed the appeal
I never realized how artsy this movie was then, I do now. Wow!
Yup, it's UPA, who were considered the "artsy" alternative to Disney and WB at the time doing a lot of minimalist, expressionistic narrative shorts.
Love this movie
Many famous art styles were included in this movie.
I love the mid century trippy 60s aesthetic of this film, and Judy had such a great voice in this! This was a favorite for me as a kid.
One of the most gorgeous looking animated features made in America.
maybe the best.alone with sleeping beauty from disney 1959
its just plane esthetics and euphoria.brilliant movie

Such a heavenly voice.
I remember seeing this on Cartoon Network back in the early 2000s. Couldn’t grab my interest, but it was pretty colorful to look at.

When I saw this song by Gay Purr-ee, I cried with emotion😢😢😢😢
They gave this animation all the time, while I was growing up with my sister, we loved it.
Jack Paar, Judy Garland, and Robert Goulet brought me here
Mewsette is ADORABLE!
Wow, I was so young, I never noticed the artistic nods to famous painters! There is some Van Gogh and Picasso for sure.

Gay nineties, Gay Blade, Gay Paris, gay was around meaning happy for a long time.
Too lose Lautrec
Judy Garland in this makes a already good movie into a timeless classic. They picked the best person in the world to do this. It is a purrfect fit.

This is one of the most beautifully and cleverly designed animated sequences ever. But it takes a bit of visual culture to appreciate that.
