This video actually saved RDJ's career as Elton was the only person who would cast him in anything after RDJ went into rehab and Elton knew how that felt.
Mainly because Elton has gone through the same system of addiction and rehab. He knows what its like to endure the torment of fighting an addiction so wants to help his friends as much as possible
I don’t think people realize how much this video resuscitated RDJ’s career. He had at least a ten year run being a drug fueled alcoholic mess. He was the perfect choice for this video.
Haaaaang on a minute... Elton and RDJ, who both battled their demons and came out on the other side to find personal happiness and huge success. Rocket man. Iron Man. My mind. It is blown.

RDJ just came out of rehab when he did this gig and the lyrics really resonated with his situation back then. "I want love", fast-forward years later and we love him 3000.❤
Thats because now we have resonating the image and memory of Robert D J performing Iron Man and we related him inmediatley to Tony Stark cause the same reason. He had a disturbed life years ago by his drug problem. For that now too we relate that lyrics with him.
Bill Haynes he was released not from rehab but from jail and only for one day. He was given permission to leave jail, shoot the video then go back to his cell. Very hard time for our hero.
The video features actor Robert Downey Jr. lip-synching the song in one continuous shot as he walks around an apartment (reminiscent of Lisa Loeb's "Stay"). Director Sam Taylor-Wood came up with the idea and Elton felt Downey was a perfect choice. At the time, Downey was in drug rehab and the lyrics were pertinent to what he was going through

To think outside of Mel Gibson, no one wanted to work with Robert Downey Jr because of the issues and addictions he was dealing with. Proud that he got himself back on the right track and became Iron Man.

Robert Downey Jr. transforms this this song into a whole new kind of beauty. This is one of the most wonderful and unique concepts for a music video I've ever seen.
Robert Downey Jr.'s path from burnt out junkie to Iron Man and the center piece of the highest-grossing movie franchise required him saying Goodbye to Yellow Brick Road. God Bless Elton John for not giving up on RDJ (and Eminem for that matter) and God bless Robert for fighting his demons. This is the moment he became Tony Stark. Now somebody get me a cheeseburger!
I saw this video by accident all those years ago and cried. Can't even count how many times I've watched it. Elton John the song the video and Robert Downey junior. What a combination.
I remember when this first came out. After knowing all the stuff Robert Downey Jnr went through with his battle with drugs and his stints in prison, I was surprised when I saw it.The video is a perfect representation of both Robert and Elton's lives mixed together, with a fabulous performance. Very emotionally evocative.
This music video is an illustration of RDJ's second chance at life and I find it extremely moving. I'm so glad that he's all well now and still with us!
I love Elton John giving Robert a chance to restart his career. I've been a fan of Robert since 1985 when he starred in weird science. I remember when he was filming Gothika, the only way he could be in the movie he had to pay for the insurance himself.
Considering the drama and what he was involved in? The studios kinda had a point. Plus, I'll point out that Shane Black said if it wasn't for Susan RDJ would be unbearable.
Over 20 years later, (as with all Elton songs) I am still in love with this masterpiece. The video is so poignant of Elton's heart and character - absolutely brilliant composition.
He looks so "heartbreak" and sad, "asking for love". 2001, were really Hard times for Robert, glad that Elton John gave this oportunity to him. And a few years later, destiny gives him with Tony Stark/Ironman the real second chance he need to carry on.
It's been 10 years since this video was posted on UA-cam, and it's still one of my most favorite songs by Elton John. Robert Downey Jr. really did a fabulous job in the music video.
I could feel RDJs pain it broke my heart when I first saw him in this video. I felt like this spoke to his soul at this time. In fact it still breaks my heart x
Bro I just listened to this song for the first time like a few days ago and I’m obsessed with it, it might be my favorite Elton John song or at least top 3, It’s legitimately a good song and I can really relate to it honestly and if I can relate to a song I like the song a lot more
every time I relapse, and am so ashamed and filled with hopelessness and apathy... I think of RDJ and watch this. I try to remind myself to never give up, that people sometimes make the same mistake for years before its the very last time. that I'm not worthless. and that I can and will come back from this. that tomorrow is a new day. that even addicts can end up as hero's. brilliant video. both men are such class acts, and full of talent.
I remember hearing about rdj talking about when he was addicted. He described addiction as putting a gun in your mouth but liking the taste of the metal. I think it really is an apt description.
True..I tell to tell Milenials RDJ was like that one red-headed actress that crashes and burns Lindsay Lohan back in the 80's and some of the 90's but got help and now its one of highest paid actors...makes his turn as Iron Man all that much better
It never changes for me. The years go by and I still see RDJ at this moment, begging for help and understanding. No matter how far he comes, I never forget these moments of televised vulnerability.
@@jack42011It’s a very difficult feeling this romantic bitterness. I think it’s because society encourages men to be solitary and unromantic, which makes it near impossible for some guys to overcome that programming and admit they need love. But the song itself is in a way, both a confession and a plea. He wants love and is asking anyone for it
Pure brilliance! RDJ was going through some issues and Elton could identify. It's almost as is Elton was saying " Yeah, I've been there mate". I could NEVER tire of his music.
He was going through tough times in his life when he recorded this. Elton was a huge fan and wanted to help him in some way. What a talented man Robert Downey Jr. Has anyone seen the film “Chaplin” ? He was extraordinary there. And yeah, he is Ironman 😉
He nailed that role. He deserved an Oscar even from back then. He's got Chaplin, Stark and Sherlock in his iconic characters list. What a great carreer.
Am I the only one who feels deeply moved by this video? Let alone the whole RDJr situation. (Wich is also touching). Elton composed a master piece here.
I come back to this video year after year and am continually impressed with the emotion showed by the slight closing of the eyes in the opening sequence. Astonishing acting! Proof that Mr. Downey, Jr. Is in a class by himself.
Can't explain how much I absolutely ADORE this video!! Just him singing to Elton and the camera following Robert around a huge empty house...and btw Robert is looking bloody gorgeous!!!!
Yes, he DOES!! I love how that huge house is empty for this song. I imagine it's symbolism for feeling so empty & numb for so long after the wrong kinds of "love" have hurt & disappointed u. Or could it just be a clean slate for RDJ's new beginnings? Either way, beautiful song & 2 beautiful men.❤️
I love that he's not afraid to show his emotions. If I didn't know Elton John's voice, I would swear Robert is really singing. He did such an excellent job.
@@chungothemungo6315 Sam Taylor-Johnson has said that the take used in the video was something like the 16th or 17th, and that she picked that one because RDJ looked the most relaxed in it. I'm curious to see how he performed some of the previous takes.
Damn. Knowing where Robert Downey Jr. was at this moment, knowing how Elton specifically had HIM do this and knowing where RDJ would go after this makes this even more powerful. THIS was the moment that set him on course to become the centerpiece of the highest-grossing franchise of all time. This turned him into Tony Stark. He IS Iron Man.
This is his best ever song. It's really sad and realistic. I love the powerful lyrics "I can't love, shot full of hole. Don't feel nothing, just feel cold'. Plus there is that brilliant guitar solo aswell.
Elton knew what he was going through. He had just got out of rehab and no one wanted to give him work what a true hero Elton is! He’s helped loads of people before during and after rehab what a man
He was actually still in rehab. Elton asked if he wanted to do the video, Mel Gibson vouched for RDJ and between the pair of them they paid a massive insurance waiver. RDJ was wearing an ankle tag making this. And the look of exhaustion was genuine as this was the 16th take. Each take was 1 continuous steadicam shot.
@@Steve_Gee74 Elton covered the insurance for the video. Mel Gibson paid for the insurance on the first movie he made out of rehab "The Singing Detective".
I sobered up the year this came out. I was really hoping for Mr Downey. We were in the same boat at the time. We both did good. He of course is Robert Downey Jr and I've been sober for 23 years.
I want love, but it's impossible A man like me, so irresponsible A man like me is dead in places Other men feel liberated I can't love, shot full of holes Don't feel nothing, I just feel cold Don't feel nothing, just old scars Toughening up around my heart But I want love, just a different kind I want love, won't break me down Won't brick me up, won't fence me in I want a love, that don't mean a thing That's the love I want, I want love I want love on my own terms After everything I've ever learned Me, I carry too much baggage Oh man I've seen so much traffic So bring it on, I've been bruised Don't give me love that's clean and smooth I'm ready for the rougher stuff No sweet romance, I've had enough
Heard this today and instantly thought of Liam Payne who sadly passed away a couple of days ago (October 2024). I'm so sad that he didn't conquer his demons like RDJ and Elton. RIP 💔
I've just noticed another really clever thing about this video - it's shot in one continuous take with only one camera, no jump cuts or edits. That's impressive.
it is one shot.plus, it was filmed after no one would give parts to Robert Downey Jr. because of him going in and out of rehab all the time and Elton was the only one to believe in him.
Well, Elton and Mel Gibson were the ones that believed in him. Without them - who knows if Rob would be with us today. But when you've seen the speech in which Rob calls Elton his "life saver", you know how goosebumps feel. Elton and Rob are my two heroes, my "loves", to put it that way - This video is my personal nexus.
I can identify with this song, because I too have been scarred and jaded by romance (not bad relationships, but unrequited love), so I spend my time being an introvert, and avoiding getting too close to people. Deep down despite feeling demoralized and disenchanted with romance, I still want love from someone I connect with and will return my affections 🙂
@@duldriabillinghurst6079 true, what we read or saw in movies what romantic relationships are is only fantasy. At the moment I feel I'm becoming more and more detached from people in general.
I love this song. Elton John is a genius. Have been a follower/admirer for many decades now. Robert Downey Jr. is perfect in this. While in a posh environment, it's barren & devoid of human trappings. So many are rooting for RDJ to remain sober & clean. He has soooo much to offer & a wife/family that should inspire his incentive to do so.
I thought I saw RDJ in this. Looks like this video is gonna blow up in views now, because reasons. Also, if this is 2001, RDJ is like 36 here. Still looks passable for 25 at most. Goddamn immortal legend. ;)
Lol RDJ can actually sing. UA-cam it. He was on Ally Mcbeal too where he sings a few times. My fave is "River" he sings that beautifully. I wish he would sing a version of "I want love" cz he would sound amazing.

After knowing all the stuff Robert Downey Jnr went through with his battle with drugs and his stints in prison, I was surprised when I saw it.The video is a perfect representation of both Robert and Elton's lives mixed together, with a fabulous performance. Very emotionally evocative.
-I'm inevitable
- And I'm Elton John.
Thinks about that scene where Elton John puts his face in front of the robodog in Kingsman: The Golden Circle.
Elton *Hercules John
Elton: I'm Rocketman
RDJ: and...I...am...Ironman!
I’m inevitable
And I’m still standing
Selin Sabaz And I... am... Rocketman!
When the grandmother in Rocketman started singing this song, that’s when I lost it. Cried so much
So did i
As soon as this song started... all tears from then on
I cried too

R C Please tell me more about that I haven’t seen the movie
This video needs to be talked about more. It is a masterpiece. One of the early steps toward getting the Robert Downey Jr. we have and cherish.
This music video is an illustration of RDJ's second chance at life and I find it extremely moving. I'm so glad that he's all well now and still with us!
Ah glad I'm not the only one feeling/thinking that way
I love Elton John giving Robert a chance to restart his career. I've been a fan of Robert since 1985 when he starred in weird science. I remember when he was filming Gothika, the only way he could be in the movie he had to pay for the insurance himself.
i don't think starred in weird science. he supporting roled.
Ur lucky
By Gothoika, RDJ didn't have the money to insure himself. A costar did.
It was Mel Gibson who paid his insurance and it wasn't Gothika it was a different movie.
Masterpiece without a doubt ❤️
I'd never heard it until this video came up in my feed. Now it's one of my favorites.
Absolutely Gorgeous song and feeling
After 18 years, he finally got the love he deserved
He got love 3000
Hello Jesús :3
bruh bruh bruh bruhh bruh bubruh bruh bruha bruh bruh? right
3 million in latin america
He looks so "heartbreak" and sad, "asking for love".
2001, were really Hard times for Robert, glad that Elton John gave this oportunity to him.
And a few years later, destiny gives him with Tony Stark/Ironman the real second chance he need to carry on.
It's been 10 years since this video was posted on UA-cam, and it's still one of my most favorite songs by Elton John.
Robert Downey Jr. really did a fabulous job in the music video.
I don't like the song. I just like looking at RDJ.
I could feel RDJs pain it broke my heart when I first saw him in this video. I felt like this spoke to his soul at this time. In fact it still breaks my heart x
Same!
Totalmente de acuerdo, gran video y gran canción
Bro I just listened to this song for the first time like a few days ago and I’m obsessed with it, it might be my favorite Elton John song or at least top 3, It’s legitimately a good song and I can really relate to it honestly and if I can relate to a song I like the song a lot more
Elton John and Jon Favreau saved RDJ's career, and for that I'm thankful that they helped culminate one of the best performances of the millennium
Mil Gibson to
Getting past RDJ, this video is a accurate representation on how I walk around sing sad songs when I'm alone.
Considering RDJ's situation back then, this song feels like it was meant to be performed by him...and great song by the way..
Absolutely! When it first came out, I remember thinking the same thing! Perfect match.
every time I relapse, and am so ashamed and filled with hopelessness and apathy...
Keep fighting!
Sending loves 💘
I remember hearing about rdj talking about when he was addicted. He described addiction as putting a gun in your mouth but liking the taste of the metal. I think it really is an apt description.
True..I tell to tell Milenials RDJ was like that one red-headed actress that crashes and burns Lindsay Lohan back in the 80's and some of the 90's but got help and now its one of highest paid actors...makes his turn as Iron Man all that much better
The instrumentation- guitars especially- is very Beatle-esque. Lovely song.
Felt the same!
Most of this album sounds like this album. Easily among the best stuff of his career. Absolutely brilliant and overlooked album.
I'm a simple woman, I see Robert Downey Jr., I click.
Astrological Hoe i am a man, and the same applies to me.
Then u r not simple, u r a nerd, like me! 😊

Same here, simple woman.

When RDJ looked just as young in his reimaged scene in Civil War.
Omg I just realized it

I came here for this comment.
This was when he was mourning his parent's deaths.
@@CanadianWhiteboardFinance same 😂
It never changes for me. The years go by and I still see RDJ at this moment, begging for help and understanding. No matter how far he comes, I never forget these moments of televised vulnerability.
Thankful Mrs. Susan Downey came along and loved this guy back to life ❤
Yes!!!!!
Rdj just nailed it by lip syncing and moving around an empty house. Talent=3000

He actually sang tho
@@brick-o-nerd5054 RDJ?
Jacqueline Daisyface yeah
He wasn't lip-syncing both he and Elton John did the tracks for that video and that song thumbs down for not doing research.
Elton has touched so many of us with his music. So glad him and Bernie wrote honestly in their music. That is why we can all relate.
Wow kif asked ill know lowe an Elton in rehab
and how... do all men feel this? I know I do
@@jack42011It’s a very difficult feeling this romantic bitterness. I think it’s because society encourages men to be solitary and unromantic, which makes it near impossible for some guys to overcome that programming and admit they need love.
But the song itself is in a way, both a confession and a plea. He wants love and is asking anyone for it
@@alexanderthegreat1270 and even more than that...
"I want love but it's impossible". The story of my life.

@@nAanis100 Welcome to the club.
it will happen.
I'm just falling in love with this song 💖

Pure brilliance! RDJ was going through some issues and Elton could identify. It's almost as is Elton was saying " Yeah, I've been there mate". I could NEVER tire of his music.
Elton John plays Iron Man??
Damn that man is talented.
No black Sabbath play iron man
@@xbfo8053 i mean he's not wrong-
Is that a joke??
hi parz
Your comment made ma day ))))
He was going through tough times in his life when he recorded this. Elton was a huge fan and wanted to help him in some way.
What a talented man Robert Downey Jr. Has anyone seen the film “Chaplin” ? He was extraordinary there.
And yeah, he is Ironman 😉
I love Chaplin so glad RDJ got a chance to play him! Look where he is now!
He nailed that role. He deserved an Oscar even from back then. He's got Chaplin, Stark and Sherlock in his iconic characters list. What a great carreer.
Finally, someone who remember Chaplin
Chaplin was a really good movie and he was amazing in it
What a moving performance as Chaplin He did💖
Am I the only one who feels deeply moved by this video? Let alone the whole RDJr situation. (Wich is also touching). Elton composed a master piece here.
Very much so, agreed.
I come back to this video year after year and am continually impressed with the emotion showed by the slight closing of the eyes in the opening sequence. Astonishing acting! Proof that Mr. Downey, Jr. Is in a class by himself.
It's fabulous isn't it?! Great performance. He aced it.❤❤❤
Me, too!
i love robert so much, like 3000, it’s crazy.
Alexandra S I like RDJ LIKE 3000 It's time to start to being person like RDJ.
Robert Downey Jr.
And Elton John.
¡Excelsior!
Either way, beautiful song & 2 beautiful men.❤️
He looks amazing. The eyes, the mouth, the arms the hips. Heart a flutter.
Elton is so cute omg he gave Robert a chance when it all was over and now he's great again. Elton is such a loving person😍
My God he's so good looking...
Robert Downey Jr 😘
Elton? yeah he's fiiine!
Yes i know
i think he looks better with every year.
I love that he's not afraid to show his emotions. If I didn't know Elton John's voice, I would swear Robert is really singing. He did such an excellent job.
He shows hardly any emotion and barely moves his lips
@@chungothemungo6315 tons of emotion in his eyes.
*Tom Holland voice* oh my god. It's Robert Downey jr
tom is the after thought ,im ashamed to say but Dad and son? so cute

DEAD😭😭
This is his best ever song. It's really sad and realistic. I love the powerful lyrics "I can't love, shot full of hole. Don't feel nothing, just feel cold'. Plus there is that brilliant guitar solo aswell.
Beautiful music. 👏 🎶 🎵
And his eyes!!!! The way he look is like there is too much inside 😰
It sounds to me like a Beatles revival with those harmonies and the solo guitar. Great song
@@Steve_Gee74 Rdj was still in rehab, idk if that other stuff is true.
@@Steve_Gee74 thanks for sharing.
A Rocket man
Who sings and get loved
A Iron man
Who saved people and get loved
They both lived as a hero
And Robert Downey Jr. is also an accomplished piano player himself. Glad he's on top of his game and conquered those demons.
I want love, but it's impossible
A man like me, so irresponsible
A man like me is dead in places
Other men feel liberated
I can't love, shot full of holes
Don't feel nothing, I just feel cold
Don't feel nothing, just old scars
Toughening up around my heart
But I want love, just a different kind
I want love, won't break me down
Won't brick me up, won't fence me in
I want a love, that don't mean a thing
That's the love I want, I want love
I want love on my own terms
After everything I've ever learned
Me, I carry too much baggage
Oh man I've seen so much traffic
So bring it on, I've been bruised
Don't give me love that's clean and smooth
I'm ready for the rougher stuff
No sweet romance, I've had enough

God bless Elton for helping the man who was born to play Tony Stark...
RDJ has impeccable posture.
They evidently only shot it 16 times. That's impressive.
it is one shot.plus, it was filmed after no one would give parts to Robert Downey Jr. because of him going in and out of rehab all the time and Elton was the only one to believe in him.
+Inbar Peled my hero! ^^ Robert Downey Jr is an automated inspiration!
Well, Elton and Mel Gibson were the ones that believed in him. Without them - who knows if Rob would be with us today. But when you've seen the speech in which Rob calls Elton his "life saver", you know how goosebumps feel. Elton and Rob are my two heroes, my "loves", to put it that way - This video is my personal nexus.
tjf4375 Impressive? Any student could have filmed this average at best video. Put a film star in a video and everyone gets an errection.
RDJ before his comeback. One of the best actors out there.
Elton is so brilliant, and this perfectly captures what it is to feel alone and without love.
Eu não sabia que Downey Jr. tinha participado da gravação de um videoclipe do Elton John. A música é simplesmente incrível.
Ela é incrivel!
Those eyes ! ugh I cant
Considering what RDJ had just gone through in the years preceding this video, just makes it THAT much more meaningful.

And a song sang by me. I want iron man back and not dead.
It could be furniture in the shape of hearts and stuff

I can identify with this song, because I too have been scarred and jaded by romance (not bad relationships, but unrequited love), so I spend my time being an introvert, and avoiding getting too close to people. Deep down despite feeling demoralized and disenchanted with romance, I still want love from someone I connect with and will return my affections 🙂
Feel very much the same. Sometimes love seems such a faraway untouchable dream
@@duldriabillinghurst6079 true, what we read or saw in movies what romantic relationships are is only fantasy.
At the moment I feel I'm becoming more and more detached from people in general.

Nice to see that Stark finally got the love he was looking for
Woah hey there fellow Tony Stank and Queen Fan
I love this song. Elton John is a genius. Have been a follower/admirer for many decades now. Robert Downey Jr. is perfect in this. While in a posh environment, it's barren & devoid of human trappings. So many are rooting for RDJ to remain sober & clean. He has soooo much to offer & a wife/family that should inspire his incentive to do so.
