Enough has been said about how good this song is and how well Elton gets the weariness across. We would be remiss if we didn't note what an excellent actor Justin Timberlake is in this. He wrenches every bit of the song's emotion out of this performance. The weary look he gives right after donning the boa at 4:25 makes my heart hurt a little bit. He is definitely a multi-talented performer.
Justin Timberlake travels from station to station and ultimately delivers a nakedly honest emotional performance. He has become an integral part of the song. He is the coal. He is the strong heavy chug.
This song has become the theme song of my late 40's. Finally realizing that there are people and things that I don't need in my life and I've begun taking those "stops" off of my life's rail line. Thanks, Elton, for being there yet again with your music and lyrics.
It's not heartbreak, it's reflection. This song is about Elton coming to terms with who he was and who he is now and accepting that he's a different, more mature person.
And yet, the lyrics were written by Bernie, ostensibly in the same fashion as they had done for over three and a half decades - with Bernie supplying the raw lyrics without any input from Elton (although he (Elton) was clearly the inspiration here!!
One of many underrated songs. When he played "Have Mercy On The Criminal" this year, I nearly cried with joy. Same in 2013 with songs from the then new "The Diving Board".
Vaughn Brenda This song and Iam Still Standing, Sad Songs, Bennie and The Jets, Lucy In The Sky and Rocket Man are my all time personal Elton John songs
I never realised that EJ could communicate pain, isolation, fatigue and disconnect from life so clearly and earnestly until I heard this song. Song hurts, man.
Late last year as my father was being consumed by pancreatic cancer this song was a constant play on his radio. He was larger than life if not flawed and this song could have been written for him. He loved EJ and am sad his whistle is now silent... Thank rocket man and Bernie for this beautiful song
I wish my mom could have gotten the chance to see him before she passed away from cancer back in December 2023. She's 1 of the reasons i started listening to him😊
I saw Sir Elton at the Biloxi Colliseum back in 2002, I think? (Could've been 2000 or 2001) When he played this song, he also showed this video on two big screens on both sides of the stage. Awesome concert. The best. Love love LOVE this man and his awesome talent. I have nearly all of his sheet music. He and Bernie Taupin make such a great songwriting team. 💖🤩😍
This is certainly one of EJ's finest moments, and maybe, THE finest. The song is devastatingly beautiful, and the video takes it to the next level. JT is absolutely splendid, as is Paul Reubens. JT bathes the EJ character in pathos. The exhausted look he gives the camera at 4:28 says it all. And then he steps onto the stage. It's a powerful story of a man who has given everything he has to give. Incredibly touching.
I got to say, I think Justin Timberlake did a wonderful job at this. He really portrayed Elton John so well....I almost thought it was him when I first saw it.
this was the first song I was able to stop & listen to after surviving a ruptured brain aneurysm which is comparable to shorting out your motherboard & all your main circuits
I truly love this song, for showing that fame, fortune and success doesn't always equate fulfillment. Everytime someone doesn't 'get' why a celebrity or public figure self harms or kill themselves, this is the answer right here. The terrible beauty of the facade.
A Musicians lifestyle can be very difficult. It's very Nomadic, living basically out of Hotels for months or even years on end. I'm retired now, but as a former bullrider, I can certainly relate. It's a Gypsy way of life. And sometimes it can be very lonesome.
Even the strongest people in life come to that fateful moment (after years of torment) where all they can do is say: “I’ve had enough...” This song captures the essence of those words perfectly.
I once heard Elton John interviewed about that video (on his Dream Ticket DVD set). He said that each of the rooms were themed after phases of his life and career: for example, the blue lit room he looks into represents his foray into drugs. Also he didn't play himself in this video: he was played (masterfully) by Justin Timberlake. Elton was amazed by Justin's performance.
If you don't know Elton John's voice or what he looked like, you fall in the category of a young kid. (At least compared to me.) Elton was one of the biggest stars of the 1970s and a major icon for my generation. It's cool that you like the video but don't ever assume that what you see in a music video is what it appears to be.
I have clinical depression too so I can always relate to EJ's music. When I first heard "Somebody Saved My Life Tonight" I thought okay, EJ knows what it's like to be at the end of a cliff, hanging by yr fingernails.
I remember the first time I saw this. I immediately knew Justin Timberlake was a talented man who was going to be a superstar. His subsequent work only confirmed it.
One of the best videos ever made. The lyrics of the song and the video are so perfect in showing a time when Elton was in alot of pain. JT does a great job in the video depicting a young Elton. All in all it's amazing...
this is an example of why Bernie belongs in the hall of fame. almost all of Elton's great songs were written by Bernie... Elton took them and aded the music and performances... so please believe - I am not trying to diminish Elto! - but Bernie is one of the best song writers of all time. If I remember right (and maybe I dont) this was a collaboration after Elton went on his own. and , to me, as others have said... great. what a partnership!
John and Paul were magnificent, but only penned maybe 8 years. Paul and Art were awesome, but didn't last. Carol King and Hubby didn't last. Neil Sedaka and his partner didn't last. The Brothers Gibb are all gone save Barry. But Elton/Taupin are still producing and recording. 50 years together, +/- a few off-years.
His life went by like a train. His career was awesome his voice was good 10 years ago, 42 years ago, whenever you ask if he was good or not, the answer in the sky is yes. His awesome songs and music career will not stop there anymore.
People get mad at me when I say this is the best Elton John song in my opinion. Best lyrics hands down of any of his songs even though I'm a hug fan of Rocket Man as well.
Absolutely the best EJ song since about 1978; captured his original sound and vibe. Great vidi too. EJ's lp that it came on "Songs From the West Coast" was a late career highlight in a career filled w/ highlights. Wish he could do one more for us in '23.

To me, this is Elton John's final masterpiece. This is the latest song I would consider AMAZING, there have been great songs afterwards, but I would never put them above this. To me, it begins with "Your Song" and ends with "This Train Don't Stop There Anymore."
Even when it looks like he might have found an Emergency Exit, it's actually his adoring entrance on stage. All the world is HIS stage and this sincere, heartbroken, man felt like too many people were 'merely players'.
Everything about this video is great! This is what (eventually) made me like and respect Justin Timberlake. Also, David LaChapelle is the best photographer in the world. I didn't realize he also directed music videos. I'm going thru a LaChapelle phase at the moment.
I Want Love and This Train Don't Stop There Anymore to me are the two best non-hit Elton songs all-time, imo.... Should've been top 10 hits that yr on the 01 Billboard 100.... His voice still carries even w/out his former falsetto, and the music video is one of his best ones, to me.... The longevity.... It's one of many reasons he's my all-time favorite musician ✌️✌️💯💯
I remember the 1973 and '74 Elton days and eagerly awaiting his next LP. magazine pics, etc and seeing him in the hats, glasses, boas etc...it was so great and then in 1977 the cap and dark glasses/changed, not flamboyant EJ period's beginning. Recalling the flamboyant days..wonderful memeories and this vid captured it spot on!
For me Elton's 4 best songs are this, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Rocketman, and Bennie & The Jets. I know, 3 easy choices, but this song is so slept on.
Don't mind me, just going through all of Elton's songs today.... love them. Every time I see Paul Reubens, I sadly hear Pee-wee's laugh. Even in a serious song/video like this that was beautifully shot. Up there with "I Want Love" for my favorites off this album, though.
I saw Elton John recently and was blown away after how short he was. This video made me think he was somewhat tall. Elton John 5’8, Justin Timberlake 6’1. Great song and video.
A Great Video. Well crafted with a clever storyline and a Terrific performance from Justin Timberlake. The fact that he doesn't 'sing' every line is a mark of its cleverness. Classic, indeed. I can watch this anytime.
Keeping with the "train" theme, this song and Runaway Train with Clapton are two of Elton's best takes on trying to maintain control of your life in what can be a crazy ride.
Only Sir Elton John could couch a bittersweet love song in an existential crisis like this. Elton comes up with the most lovely chord progressions and melodies, while Bernie Taupin seems to be the second coming of John Steinbeck. I'm a sucker for happy-sounding songs that are sad in content.
I don't think that people respect enough how this video had to be filmed so that it would present in slow motion and still be in sync. And give it to that queen and his pal. They make great songs.
For a long time, I found it difficult to separate the performer from the character. Especially after that scandal in the red light district when he was caught... y'know.
Paul Reubens (aka Pee Wee Herman) did a good job portraying his manager walking alongside Justin Timberlake as Elton
R.I.P. Paul Reubens aka Pee Wee Herman

Justin really captures the young Elton. If they ever make a biopic about Elton's life, Justin should totally play him.
They did and he didn't.They needed a pudgy guy I guess..Wonder if he was up for it.The actor even recorded a bunch of the songs for the soundtack.
How was this not a hit? Damn this is a phenomenal song.
It was a hit in the 90s. I saw it topped the charts for weeks.
Funny enough this was a minor hit because Elton is a legend. Overall the album did not do as well as he hoped. The songs are solid and one of his best

His early 2000's voice was the best era for his 'new' voice. He sounded excellent on this.

Renatenha Elton had some voice surgeries that transformed how he sang. Listen to him in ‘73 vs now.

People overact that he's a terrible actor but he's pretty damn great.
Edison he was great. Should have made more films.:-)
He doesn't have dialogue. Its easy to appear decent when you don't have to talk.
Silent film acting is not easy. Everything is done through the conviction of body language and face.
Tinker, with respect, it's even more difficult to convey emotion without dialogue. JT nailed this
When Justin was Elton before Taron.. Both brilliant.

Elton is irreplaceble... JT, good job !
This is so moving...Timberlake is mesmerizing. Paul Reubens soooo good.
