This song has become the theme song of my late 40's. Finally realizing that there are people and things that I don't need in my life and I've begun taking those "stops" off of my life's rail line. Thanks, Elton, for being there yet again with your music and lyrics.
It's not heartbreak, it's reflection. This song is about Elton coming to terms with who he was and who he is now and accepting that he's a different, more mature person.
And yet, the lyrics were written by Bernie, ostensibly in the same fashion as they had done for over three and a half decades - with Bernie supplying the raw lyrics without any input from Elton (although he (Elton) was clearly the inspiration here!!
Enough has been said about how good this song is and how well Elton gets the weariness across. We would be remiss if we didn't note what an excellent actor Justin Timberlake is in this. He wrenches every bit of the song's emotion out of this performance. The weary look he gives right after donning the boa at 4:25 makes my heart hurt a little bit. He is definitely a multi-talented performer.
Justin Timberlake travels from station to station and ultimately delivers a nakedly honest emotional performance. He has become an integral part of the song. He is the coal. He is the strong heavy chug.
I got to say, I think Justin Timberlake did a wonderful job at this. He really portrayed Elton John so well....I almost thought it was him when I first saw it.
I never realised that EJ could communicate pain, isolation, fatigue and disconnect from life so clearly and earnestly until I heard this song. Song hurts, man.
I saw Sir Elton at the Biloxi Colliseum back in 2002, I think? (Could've been 2000 or 2001) When he played this song, he also showed this video on two big screens on both sides of the stage. Awesome concert. The best. Love love LOVE this man and his awesome talent. I have nearly all of his sheet music. He and Bernie Taupin make such a great songwriting team. 💖🤩😍
John and Paul were magnificent, but only penned maybe 8 years. Paul and Art were awesome, but didn't last. Carol King and Hubby didn't last. Neil Sedaka and his partner didn't last. The Brothers Gibb are all gone save Barry. But Elton/Taupin are still producing and recording. 50 years together, +/- a few off-years.
Late last year as my father was being consumed by pancreatic cancer this song was a constant play on his radio. He was larger than life if not flawed and this song could have been written for him. He loved EJ and am sad his whistle is now silent... Thank rocket man and Bernie for this beautiful song
I wish my mom could have gotten the chance to see him before she passed away from cancer back in December 2023. She's 1 of the reasons i started listening to him😊
I have clinical depression too so I can always relate to EJ's music. When I first heard "Somebody Saved My Life Tonight" I thought okay, EJ knows what it's like to be at the end of a cliff, hanging by yr fingernails.
I didn't realize "Pee Wee Herman" was playing John Reid. I just read about it while watching Elton on a talk show. Paul Reubens was seated next to Elton! I love watching all the videos of his interviews, concerts I love it all❤🧡💛💚💙💜!

this is an example of why Bernie belongs in the hall of fame. almost all of Elton's great songs were written by Bernie... Elton took them and aded the music and performances... so please believe - I am not trying to diminish Elto! - but Bernie is one of the best song writers of all time. If I remember right (and maybe I dont) this was a collaboration after Elton went on his own. and , to me, as others have said... great. what a partnership!
I truly love this song, for showing that fame, fortune and success doesn't always equate fulfillment. Everytime someone doesn't 'get' why a celebrity or public figure self harms or kill themselves, this is the answer right here. The terrible beauty of the facade.
A Musicians lifestyle can be very difficult. It's very Nomadic, living basically out of Hotels for months or even years on end. I'm retired now, but as a former bullrider, I can certainly relate. It's a Gypsy way of life. And sometimes it can be very lonesome.
This is certainly one of EJ's finest moments, and maybe, THE finest. The song is devastatingly beautiful, and the video takes it to the next level. JT is absolutely splendid, as is Paul Reubens. JT bathes the EJ character in pathos. The exhausted look he gives the camera at 4:28 says it all. And then he steps onto the stage. It's a powerful story of a man who has given everything he has to give. Incredibly touching.
To me, this is Elton John's final masterpiece. This is the latest song I would consider AMAZING, there have been great songs afterwards, but I would never put them above this. To me, it begins with "Your Song" and ends with "This Train Don't Stop There Anymore."
One of the best videos ever made. The lyrics of the song and the video are so perfect in showing a time when Elton was in alot of pain. JT does a great job in the video depicting a young Elton. All in all it's amazing...
Gabriele Z Justin is only 2 inches taller than Elton--5'10"" vs 5'8". As Amy Jo says, it's the platform shoes, which Elton also wore, and Justin's slimmer frame also gives the illusion of height. :)
I actually watched a few times just to watch Paul Reubens. He was hysterical as he was ripping up paperwork, knocking people down so he can protect Elton. LOL
I once heard Elton John interviewed about that video (on his Dream Ticket DVD set). He said that each of the rooms were themed after phases of his life and career: for example, the blue lit room he looks into represents his foray into drugs. Also he didn't play himself in this video: he was played (masterfully) by Justin Timberlake. Elton was amazed by Justin's performance.
For a long time, I found it difficult to separate the performer from the character. Especially after that scandal in the red light district when he was caught... y'know.
Even the strongest people in life come to that fateful moment (after years of torment) where all they can do is say: “I’ve had enough...” This song captures the essence of those words perfectly.
Elton & Bernie are the greatest song writing team of all time! Sorry, I love the Beatles, John & Paul....I love Led Zeppelin... I love many other bands, but there is no one else who wrote better songs than these two men!
Like Robert Downey Jr. in the "I Want Love" video, Justin was an excellent choice, for this "This Train Don't Stop Here Anymore" video, and he did a brilliant job, also...Given how much Elton hates doing music videos, this is a good way for him to get out of doing them...He captured the essense of Elton wonderfully...Brilliant song and concept!
this was the first song I was able to stop & listen to after surviving a ruptured brain aneurysm which is comparable to shorting out your motherboard & all your main circuits
I remember the first time I saw this. I immediately knew Justin Timberlake was a talented man who was going to be a superstar. His subsequent work only confirmed it.
Justin Timberlake did a great job projecting the song's feeling. Pee-Wee did a great job as well. One of the best video concepts I've ever seen and an incredible song. Bernie Taupin is amazing with his phrase inventions like "the man express".
His life went by like a train. His career was awesome his voice was good 10 years ago, 42 years ago, whenever you ask if he was good or not, the answer in the sky is yes. His awesome songs and music career will not stop there anymore.
I feel like surely I’ve posted this comment before, but what kind of soulless cretin clicks “thumbs down” on this?! Wth?!?! Favorite music video of all time. There’s so much going on here, both personally and artistically. Incredible song, too. ❤️
People get mad at me when I say this is the best Elton John song in my opinion. Best lyrics hands down of any of his songs even though I'm a hug fan of Rocket Man as well.
Even when it looks like he might have found an Emergency Exit, it's actually his adoring entrance on stage. All the world is HIS stage and this sincere, heartbroken, man felt like too many people were 'merely players'.
I just lost a best friend who I loved with all my heart to killers in Winnipeg. He sent for me to get him but I didn't get him in time. They shot him and we ended up in ICU where he held on for a few days and started to fade. We had faith n were praying but I won't see him til Heaven. My heart is so heavy and this song captures my pain... and probably my favorite EJ song ever.
I saw Elton John recently and was blown away after how short he was. This video made me think he was somewhat tall. Elton John 5’8, Justin Timberlake 6’1. Great song and video.
Yeah, it's exactly what the song is about. That particular EJ album (Songs from the West Coast) was really autobiographical. Every EJ fan should hear the whole album if they haven't already. The song about Matthew Shepherd (people, google the name if you don't know it) is heartbreakingly beautiful. (The song is American Triangle - I'm sure it's here on youtube.)
Only Sir Elton John could couch a bittersweet love song in an existential crisis like this. Elton comes up with the most lovely chord progressions and melodies, while Bernie Taupin seems to be the second coming of John Steinbeck. I'm a sucker for happy-sounding songs that are sad in content.
For me Elton's 4 best songs are this, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Rocketman, and Bennie & The Jets. I know, 3 easy choices, but this song is so slept on.
I just found this song..OMG I love it!!..I must have watched it 10 times today. And I still CANT see J.T. under that makeup.Especially Justin from 2001..My wife could tell it was him either.Good job!.He's actually a good actor.Great song!!
Another gem from Sir Elton...I cried at the end, so beautiful...(and congrats on the recent Golden Globe awards for “Rocketman” - well-deserved for Sir Elton, Bernie Taupin, and Taron Egerton 👏🏻👏🏻❤️❤️🎶🎶🎥🎥)
I love this song - it's probably my favourite song on Songs from the West Coast but I find it so hard to listen to now. It somehow speaks to me of my late wife who died 2 years ago - even though it wasn't particularly one of our songs and doesn't really have anything content that speaks to those emotions; but it's about loss and even though I'm moving on, learning to love again, I'll never not miss her every moment of every minute of every day. Going to go have a little cry now.
I ache at the long look he gives "Bernie Taupin" at 2:31...he fell in love with Bernie his best friend when they were teens, but it wasn't meant to be. Bernie was always there for him but was straight and that was that. I'm glad they found their way and still are that amazing duo, thru decades.
Don't mind me, just going through all of Elton's songs today.... love them. Every time I see Paul Reubens, I sadly hear Pee-wee's laugh. Even in a serious song/video like this that was beautifully shot. Up there with "I Want Love" for my favorites off this album, though.
Elton's most underrated song
One of many underrated songs. When he played "Have Mercy On The Criminal" this year, I nearly cried with joy. Same in 2013 with songs from the then new "The Diving Board".

The most honest song ever written, you can feel the heartbreak.
It's not heartbreak, it's reflection. This song is about Elton coming to terms with who he was and who he is now and accepting that he's a different, more mature person.
@@furioussherman7265 Exactly, it's him accepting old age, with everything that comes with it; wisdom, sorrow, regret, etc.
@@oscarclarke2653 It's also about him accepting that he's no longer the center of attention in the music business and learning to enjoy it.

Justin really captures the young Elton. If they ever make a biopic about Elton's life, Justin should totally play him.
They did and he didn't.They needed a pudgy guy I guess..Wonder if he was up for it.The actor even recorded a bunch of the songs for the soundtack.
I got to say, I think Justin Timberlake did a wonderful job at this. He really portrayed Elton John so well....I almost thought it was him when I first saw it.
People overact that he's a terrible actor but he's pretty damn great.
Edison he was great. Should have made more films.:-)
He doesn't have dialogue. Its easy to appear decent when you don't have to talk.
Silent film acting is not easy. Everything is done through the conviction of body language and face.
Tinker, with respect, it's even more difficult to convey emotion without dialogue. JT nailed this
How was this not a hit? Damn this is a phenomenal song.
It was a hit in the 90s. I saw it topped the charts for weeks.
Funny enough this was a minor hit because Elton is a legend. Overall the album did not do as well as he hoped. The songs are solid and one of his best

His early 2000's voice was the best era for his 'new' voice. He sounded excellent on this.

Justin Timberlake... What an impeccable job impersonating Elton John.

Wow...well put !
For me Elton's 4 best songs are this, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Rocketman, and Bennie & The Jets. I know, 3 easy choices, but this song is so slept on.
I think this is Elton's BEST song since his 70's and 80's heyday. Elton devotee since 1975.
Elton wore that derby on the front of people magazine in the 70’s when he graced the cover.
I just found this song..OMG I love it!!..I must have watched it 10 times today. And I still CANT see J.T. under that makeup.Especially Justin from 2001..My wife could tell it was him either.Good job!.He's actually a good actor.Great song!!
Paul Reubens killed it in this video!
Wow Justin looks so much like Elton !!!!! Justin did a awesome job !!! So great
Now I feel like Justin Timberlake needs to sing this.
Wow...This song still gives me chills!! Still listening in 2019😢😢
Delrese Rolle one of my favorites but then they're ALL my favorites
Another gem from Sir Elton...I cried at the end, so beautiful...(and congrats on the recent Golden Globe awards for “Rocketman” - well-deserved for Sir Elton, Bernie Taupin, and Taron Egerton 👏🏻👏🏻❤️❤️🎶🎶🎥🎥)
One of his most depressing songs. Yet easy to feel connected to.
Not depressing at all. He's saying he doesn't do drugs anymore and he is not tempted by them ever again.
@@fareshajjar1208 True, maybe, but I don't think that is the focal point of this song. For a more direct reference, listen to "Peachtree Road".
Elton the last living legend of music, long live the king.
Taron was perfect casting for Elton but if not him, JT would be amazing casting too
This was truly Elton's swan song.
Elton is the very last of a dying breed of true talent and greatnesss
I saw Elton live in his red piano tour, they played this video. I'm privileged to say i got to see him live in person.
Elton said in an interview (I don't recall where) that he never had feelings for Bernie. If he had, that would have complicated things.
Is that Ashton Kutcher as Bernie?
It's kevin Melone
Don't mind me, just going through all of Elton's songs today.... love them.
Every time I see Paul Reubens, I sadly hear Pee-wee's laugh. Even in a serious song/video like this that was beautifully shot.
Up there with "I Want Love" for my favorites off this album, though.
One of the best Elton Songs. He is one of the best composers of the last century.
Elton and Bernie are and will always be the best. Along with Davy Nigel and Dee ❤❤❤😊😊
May be my favorite Elton song - absolutely heart rending. Maybe his most brutally honest(?) song
I class this as his retirement song.
Heart “wrenching”, not heart rending. :)
Perfection.!!
Paul Reubens as the aggro, over-the-top manager is my favorite part of this video.
I think another hidden reference is about Bernie at 2:22...the only guy he hugs for real
Until now I realize that
I dont think that's burnie I think that's ray
That's definitely Bernie. He's holding the gold record in the shot for a reason. 👍
thanks for pointing that out. I was looking around the room and noticing the duck, so missed it
This song makes me cry when I hear it. I literally don't know why
there is ABSOLUTELY NO NEED to use the word LITERALLY in your sentence. Try and stop using this word incorrectly.
baby cakes me too!!!
Me too.... 😢
