It's so great that you don't just put out any informed opinion on the return, but you actually back it up with analysis. This makes it soo much more convincing, thank you !
As an amateur single player, i can confirm that your analytics are so accurate 😂 especially the one where you do not smash when your opponent does a flick serve. Thank you for putting a summary about this, as i usually learn by experience without knowing exactly what return should i play for single.
Thanks for this video it’s really helpful! I bought your multifeed programmes a few months back and have been doing one once a weak and they have really helped me! If anyone reading this is considering getting them I would recommend it - even just for an extra ‘insight’ in what training might help you!
This channel is by far one of the best badminton tutorial channels in YT in terms of clarity and simplicity in breaking down every complicated technique. thank you for your content!
Great lesson again! Personally, I love to play that deceptive backhand return, also in doubles. This habit came as kind of a workaround, because my right thumb is a bit deformed, so it's hard for me to follow coaches advice to use forehand returns most of the time. Those backhand returns are just easier for me, and taking the shuttle early as well as adding the deception came by itself. At first I had considerable trouble at the sideline, but training sessions helped a lot. And it was a fun process to watch my opponents looking baffled when the shuttle just fell to their side of the court. But well, they also adjusted to my new habits, so now variability is key for my returns!
4:32 I really appreciate this , when you show both sides Sometimes it's hard to visualise how you're supposed to do it when you only show one of the hands
Hi Greg and Jenny ! Thank you for this video about single return ! One of my bad habit is to lift/clear every opponent's serve. When they notice that, they stand a little further at the back after their serve and take the iniative to attack... I'll try to play more at the net next time ! Thanks for your dedication, you rock. Love
This video was super helpful and I can't wait to test it. It got me thinking on the purpose of doing a low vs. high serve in singles. I usually go with low serves and a few high serves but I am not sure it is the best way to go for my strenghts and weaknesses! A video on that subject would be great! ;)
very very useful for me.. we play singles. mostly male players do backhand low serve. but here when i play, i mostly do backhand low serve. but 90% of other players do high serve even in singles. from now, i have learnt some amazing high serve returns in singles. thank you so so much greg and jenny.
Ah.... never seen such a detailed video on single service returns.... I have always been avoiding singles due to many reasons one biggest being how to return serves...this video definitely going to help me build some confidence and challenge myself... tonight I am playing doubles yet I will challenge myself for a single match and apply these techniques...as always Massive Thanks and Love from Dubai.. .:-)
The most important line was "Hit shots to get shots". This is what I am trying to teach my kids and friends, to move up level. Control your opponent's game through your own shots. But this is a very eloquent way to put it. Thank you.
Thank you so much, this would help a lot, i really enjoyed it. could you please make a video on how to hit a cross court smash and forehand low serve please. it would help a lot.
love that you guys just gave 6 diff ways! also a 1000! matches?! and do consider one singles match is around an hour long! that's some research done for a video!
Thank you very much - these stats are very interesting, I don't know why bwf doesn't track stats like NBA or Tennis do - that would only push badminton to new heights, when we know what sort of shots are the most effective. In consequence we could teach the game in the most effective way (what shots have the highest probability of winning etc.)
@@BadmintonInsight What surprised you the most? Lack of smash in men's singles with long serve? That's probably due to receivers being more focused on short serve, so they are backtracking most of the time....
@@uczenp Yeah, and also that even though the % of low serves between men/women were really different, they had almost the EXACT same split of lift/net/deception! (only 1-2% difference!!)
Thanks for the video. I am still a bit confused on the differences between drop/clip and a straight slice because I see some footage of what seems to be a straight slice in the drop/clip section at 5:45
I face trouble with the high serves. But the slice should be useful. I did go for smash, rookie mistake but I'll hopefully correct it soon. Awesome video, as always ✌️
Thanks for the video... I have also come across this type of serves but most probably some serves I can't return but most of the serves can return but with tis video I can return any type of serve 100 percent...👍👍 As being an advanced player it is sometimes difficult in some serves n return...
Very informative video! But would it be better to play a clear when you’re off balanced from the flick serve or a straight drop shot? Thanks for the video as well. Love it!
At the top level most singles do the low serve especially for males but seeing as I am coaching 12-13 year olds I am getting them to do the high serve so well practice some of these strong returns. (Most students at this level and age cannot get to the back line and smash or even consistently hit drop shots)
There is one serve I don't know how to position myself. When my opponent position serve is far away from the "T" line meaning close to the the side lines, where do I position myself when returning the serve?
Great video! I Question: Normally deceptive shots are effective when used sparingly. But what happens when we do the opposite of that? Aka, what happens when we mix deceptive shots *equally* to regular shots in normal gameplay? If the opponent has more shots to guess from, will it affect their decisiveness? Finally, are there any players who do use deceptive shots greedily? would love to see how it plays out!
Great content as always, thanks! I am struggling with hitting the good, long clear - is it more about power or rather technique? Any insight about that shot? ;)
Could you cover 3rd shot strategy, technique? Especially in singles, the third shot seems to be always defensive and under pressure for me. Same in reverse, all my opponents end up only high serving because my second shot is strong. In other words, I win most points when my opponent is serving and loose most points when I'm serving.
@@BadmintonInsight I noticed on one the masters tournaments on youtube, someone commented; 'Service over, service over'. As in a joke about how few rallies are won on serve with the new culture of backhand low serve in singles. After I low serve, i don't seemed to cover corners well enough but it's not through lack of speed nor strength, so I'm presuming technique of positioning after serve. Especially from right hand court as a right-hander.

Thanks Kai! If you're quite off balance yes!
@@BadmintonInsight thanks!
that is correct about smashing a flick serve, and i hate it coz i always tempted to do it to only get countered by a simple net shot.
This tip sums it up: 'play shot to get shot'
Thank you so much , this would help me a lot
If the opponent hits cross court drop what should we do ???
It depends on their weaknesses, but generally the hardest shot would be to move the longest distance on the court - so a straight block or net shot!
Thank you!
You’re welcome Joshua 😀🏸
there is another backhand deception shot. it's easy the same process as you guys showen you just have to slice the shuttle in a diangular upwards.
