    It's not easy.
Takes a hard work and tremendous amounts of time to master it.
There's one thing when you watch some tuts for a week, get some basic understanding of it and make a primitive procedural chair.. And there's second thing, when you realize you can't make complex shit on your own.
To make a full use of it, you need to know VEX, trigonometry, vector math, calculus, physics, have good analytical skills, etc ... It really helps if you have some basic programming experience too.
If you work hard, really hard, you'll need at least 1.5 year to make a full use of it.
Once you KNOW Houdini, you're the master of 3D.
    There's no barrier, you're a fucking GOD.

Though, very few would need to MASTER it. You can compare it with Photoshop. Like, you don't need to know everything about PS in order to deliver quality projects. As with most software, 80% of the work is done by 20% of the tools.
Figure out your area, then deconstruct the skills needed for it (say particle simulation, or, procedural generation). You will be halfway there already.

I suck at technical stuff, vex was my first programming language.
What I'm saying is it took more that 2 years to fully grasp and use Houdini independently at work.

In my opinion, it’s quite easy to learn (as long as you have some knowledge of 3D). It’s pretty easy to use once you know how to use the Houdini’s interface. For beginners, there are some really great tutorials however the other tutorials aren’t always so great and they can have very low quality. However there are enough tutorials to know how to understand most things that the software has to offer. Also an advantage for beginners is that houdini is node based so you can easily modify actions you have done to make it match the tutorial if it’s not perfect. Another thing though that can make Houdini hard is the fact how you might need to do certain expressions for things in Houdini and it can be very hard to learn Python in Houdini. But all in all, great software, it’s pretty easy to learn.

The first lesson for every topic (pyro, fluid, particles, destruction) are also free! So a must.
"Entagma" is also quite cool, lots of free stuff (their patreon is also quite good).

Pretty easy to learn, depending on what you mean by learning, and what are the quality expectation. I've followed quite a few tutorials from people working as TD at ILM, and they all agree with the fact that is not easy. So it all comes to what you are trying to learn, if you want to create a box and move it with a bunch of keyframes, very easy, creating a decent explosion with fracture, debris, dust, not so easy, and can't really find a good tutorial about VEX, they all seem to be more focus on ego and showing off their skills than actually teaching coding, but about the vex tutorial I may be unlucky and didn't come across the good ones.

Long term Houdini user here: Great video!
The only thing I don't completely agree with is that "experienced artists" will have an easier job learning Houdini per ce,
if they come from a FX background (or if they are indeed flexible) this is indeed true.
But if you come from a modeling background, there is a lot of things you have to "unlearn" first, before you can start to learn Houdini Properly, in my opinion.
Houdini is getting better and better at creating parity for the interactive modeling side of things,
but people who are heavily entrenched in, for example 3dsmax, may start learning Houdini with incorrect expectations.
But yeah definitely try if the "mindset" is for you, as it comes with a free apprentice (basically full version with watermarks) edition, which is great :)

It is not as hard as some people make it put to be. I believe you just need to learn around the software(practically like learning any other software), and then does come the harder part, which is, if you want the FULL potential out of Houdini, VEX coding & some concepts out of linear algebra and trigonometry. I hate when people say you need to be some sort of scientist, it is harder than your usual software, but like practically EVERY person who uses Houdini says, it is nowhere near as hard as some fools make it out to be, you do just need some mathematics, understanding nodes(which is in any software but a must in Houdini), and programming.
A good way to say it is like MEL in Maya, you don’t need it for everything, but it will help you. And it is not extremely hard either.

even in the last few days i worked first time on a gameasset complete in Houdini. First i though its a mess, but then.... This possibilities of a mix of procedual and direct modeling is absoute unique and powerful. And with the voxelremesh i can skip the step to zbrush, because i can do it all in Houdini itself. And after that all, if you must make changes on the model, its so easy because you can alswas go back to the roots an change it. And the best; After changing somethin, Houdini setup the new UVs automatically. No reunwrap the model. And then i didn´t spoke about the procedual creation of gameassets like buildings etc.... I work more and more in Houdini only. The only step i must go into other apps, when i must do some sculpting. Ok, i didin´t dive into the riggingtools of Houdini so this i do mostly in Blender at the moment. But this come soon

It depends on what you want to do, how you learn and problem solve. I hated Houdini at the start and now I love it. I remember finding it extremely hard and nerdy. Now it’s the main go to for a lot of stuff. You must be willing to suck at something before you get good at it. Even knowing a small amount of Houdini is extremely beneficial. I would say to people starting out that knowing the basics of Maya and Houdini is 100% essential.

Yes, you can, that's actually the most used workflow in big studios, the majority will model in Maya and then export in Houdini for FX and either render in Houdini and third-party render engine or go back to other programs for the final render. But personally, if you model in Maya, I would rig in Maya, for the most part, it's also the personal preference of course, but the only thing that Houdini really shine against others it's the simulations, no wonder why most studios use it mainly for that.

I think the software being easy or hard to learn is very much down to the individual and how they think/approach the methodology of how they work.
Personally, when I started 3D modeling (At the time Discreet 3DS Max 6, the pre-Autodesk days) I found it very easy to jump into , it just clicked with it me how to work in that style of SubD. Later I started to learn sculpting and I found it not too bad, the logic and workflow again came pretty easily. But when it came to Houdini the outcome wasn't the same. Working through a node system, and having to use so much scripting like VEX to achieve the results you wanted in term of procedural modeling that it boggled my mind, I still suck with Houdini 3 years later.
On the flip side I've seen newer artists just grasp Houdini quickly, they just work with the node style system easily and the scripting comes second nature like any language, while at the same time they find sculpting or SubD to be a more shaky grasp for them, with the lack of procedural aspects and the harder to iterate system.
My biggest takeaway in terms of learning though is that the results learning through online tutorials are VERY DIFFERENT between Houdini and Max/Maya/Blender. Houdini takes an immense amount of time to grasp well, while I feel the others do not. You could hit up UA-cam or Artstation and watch a couple tutorials for Max or Blender, like Tim Bergholz's AKM and after just that one video go and create some other hard surface model with pretty decent confidence, you learned a lot in a short time. The same cannot be said of Houdini, you can go watch and buy a dozen tutorials for it and you'll still walk away not knowing a lot of how Houdini works and what it can do. You need to dedicate yourself to a long learning process to master Houdini, but it's very much worth it as it's an incredible powerful tool.

Short answer, yes. Dont say houdini is as easy as blender, c4d, or maya because it is not. Honestly a cg artist can make his or her entire career while not using houdini. Houdini is for people who is familiar with 3d and compositing. The retail price is expensive for one person as well.

I am strongly familiar with Blender. Been using it for nearly 10 years. I am now recently watching Houdini tutorials only out of curiosity. I am interested in its node compositing. Yet, I don't have Houdini and I have no intention of renting its copy, unless I really need it for career. I am watching too the turorials of C4D, Maya and Zbrush, but I am not renting when Blender is enough for me.

Thanks for the info and to be honest, I must say I'm quite intimidated already. I'd like to find out somethings. I currently exist in an industry where VFX isn't yet a thing at all within the digital visuals creation world. Almost Zero interest in vfx in films, commercials and anything related. However, I'm trying to learn vfx for the long term, I've been mainly working with Cinema4d and After effects for years for creating stuff and mostly brand related visuals. but, I just want to develop into VFX as much as I possibly can and from info I've gathered over time is, HOUDINI might be the perfect app to learn for CGI and Nuke for final compositing and all. Do you think I really need to learn modeling allover in Houdini or I'm good with modeling in C4d then continuing to whatever I want to achieve in terms of vfx in Houdini? is it possible that way? Thanks again for sharing.

If you're a 3d modeler, you should be looking into Houdini for its procedural workflow - that's what makes it an incredibly powerful 3d software. Any 3d modeler showing good knowledge of procedural modelling in Houdini has a huge advantage over those who don't. Good Houdini artists are relatively rare and therefore very employable. If you're learning vfx for the long term, Houdini is the software you should be diving into.

There too many forms of this visual problem. When you have to deal with all of that, you must find accessible tutorials instead of too fast video tutorials. Someone with this dyslexia variant issue could be better in Zbrush, Maya, 3DS Max, Blender, etc., and be better in quality projects. Remember this 3D art is a small industry, other artists could become your future colleagues, even if you are able to do a job with great talent. Toxic attitudes are not really allowed or approved in this industry, a lot of employees are more productive under a passionate team instead of people who laugh at other to increase their ego. the idea that houdini is only procedural is a misconception , you have direct modeling tools which gives you all the normal tools most 3d application support, the benefits are you can easily change parameters once the models finished , something blender or modo just can't do... then you have the plg system which takes it to a whole new level.

@Reunite The British Empire Its a matter of what you want to model. Buildings, enviroment stuff and so on i would recommend Houdini. The procedual workflow in Blender is just rudimentary. For example, sure you can use booleans in Blender too. But try to make changes after the boolean on the mesh. You must apply the boolean modifer. In Houdini i can make changes all i want and when i must make some different in the boolean, i make it, and all after will change too.
A Hardsurface Model like a conceptdesign i maybe also would do in Blender, but also this is very fast to do in Houdini once your are familar with the software.

    • @mikeben9587
      @mikeben9587 4 роки тому

@Reunite The British Empire Youre right. Its depend on what you do. the guys around Hardops and even Cédric Lepiller for example do a amazing job in Blender with procedual modeling, its so insane that often i can´t follow, what they do :). And for the generell modeling stuff i also prefer Blender over Houdini. And iam sure, if Blender had a better integration into other software for pipeline a lot more professional modeler would use Blender for their work over Max or Maya, simply because Blenders modeling workflow is realy fast compared to the other both packages.

Nope, In Blender you can render with gpu-support. The native Renderengine in Houdini is at the moment only on cpu. It can handle a hugh amount of geometry, but the render itself is slow, exept you have a renderfarm in the back. Or you buy a third party render like Redshift.

    • @PlaidBlackHawk

Houdini uses Vex, which is a derivative of C. It follows the same basic rules and principles of most programming languages, but is used for creating effects in Houdini. On a side note, some parameters in Houdini still use Hscript - it's apparently slowly being dissolved and eventually replaced by Vex. As far as tutorials go, there's a decent number of them on UA-cam. I personally found Pluralsight to be the most beneficial. There's a great tutorial on pluralsight by Beau Garcia that covers the maths you'll be using frequently in Houdini, like matrices and some basic vector maths. I mention this because you really aren't taking advantage of Vex if you ignore the maths that drives a lot of Hollywood effects.
