The Caro-Kann Defense is an extremely tough nut to crack with the white pieces. Although it is certainly not one of the most popular chess openings ever played, you will see this eclectic system pop up from time to time at the Grandmaster level (and beginner/intermediate levels as well!). Notable Super-GMs playing the Caro-Kann Defense these days are Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Hikaru Nakamura, and they are achieving some pretty good results with it as many players are simply not deeply prepared to fight against the Caro-Kann with the white pieces. And that is where GM Eugene Perelshteyn's new 2.5+ hour chess DVD comes in! GM Perelshteyn focuses exclusively on utilizing the Exchange Variation of the Caro-Kann Defense to play for an enduring initiative with the white pieces. In the following chess video excerpt from the Empire Chess DVD ¨Crush the Caro-Kann with the Exchange Variation¨ viewers will be introduced to fundamental ideas on how to achieve pressure early in the opening with white against the Caro-Kann Defense.

we don´t have any more previews from that DVD coming, however we have a lot more free previews coming out in the next few months. stay tuned!
This video almost entirely matches my previous research with stockfish at depth 35 in these lines. White maintains long-term edge and Black must be careful.
An easy trap at club level is: 1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. exd5 cxd5 4. Bd3 Nc6 5. c3 Nf6 6. Bf4 Bg4 7. Qb3 Qd7 8. Nd2 e6 9. Ngf3 Be7? 10. Ne5 Nxe5?? 11. dxe5 and Black must drop a Knight with Castle or play 11...a6 in order to avoid Bb5 killing Black's Queen.
and I won many games online like this
Between this and Martin's Caro-Kann video, I have a much better grasp of more fun lines vs the Caro than 3. Nd2. Thank you!
"Crush the caro-kann with the exchange variation" that sounds funny xD
All ur videos are very instructives and show well the mainlines ... from france: thanks u very much !
At 13:45, can't Black simply reply with f5, attacking the bishop?
It definitely looks like a good option!
If the exchange variation is truly like a reverse Carlsbad then why can't black try to play Nge7 (after developing the dark square bishop) followed by f6 and e5?
wow-this guys 'eyes' are scary; imagine facing him as an opponent over the board!! I only play CC now!! good info here though so well done!
Why this man dont blink???
It's truly amazing.
The white pieces setup seems similar to the Exchange French albeit with a half-open open C file.
11:46 Bxh6 Bxh6 .. Bxf5 gxf5 then.. Nh4.. instead of Bf4!
11:46 Stronger is 1.Bxh6 Bxh6 2.Bxf5 gxf5 3.Nh4! followed by Qh5 with a weak black pawn on f5 and great initiative for white.

Good job gm Eugene ! Time to come to Zambia !!
thanks for watching and commenting!
I will follow the book opening e4 ,,,and it was amazing ,,,,thanks to u sir
Great! I'll add the Bd3 move to my repertoire. I always exchange with the caro kann anyways, but I used to play Nf3, Nc3, etc. These lines seem more interesting with Bd3, thanks!
The exchange variation is a very interesting way to meet the Caro Kann Defense. I'm glad that this video was instructive for you
I like your teaching style - just ordered all of your stuff :-)
Nicely up to the point!
It's a great line, I REALLY recommend it for White, mostly because I have scored well with it... as black... ;-)
+mberg1974 haha!
good stuff, as always
Thanks!

I crush the exchange variation with my Caro-kann! Bring it on! Im ready!!
I think Bxf3 in these lines is a bad move for black and he does much better if he provokes white to play h3. After Bxf3 i agree white gets a dangerous attack sometines
You didnt tell what to play against knight a5
Tawfiqt, if black play f5, i think white can take it whit xf6
Brilliant
What about 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.exd cxd 4,Bd3 Nc6 5.c3 Qc7 6.Ne2 Bg4 7.Bf4 Qxf4 or 7.f3 Bd7 8.Bf4 e5 9.dxe5 Nxd5 10.0-0 Bd6
In hte last variation white is better, the d5 pawn is weak
So Caro Mann loses by force? Refuted, finished?
what if e6 first
You mean black plays 1...e6 ? Then after 2.d4 it might turn into french defense or sicilian.
at 8:20 , doesnt Qb6 by black just win a pawn?
it is probably risky to take it though, Black has no development
