The explanations following the game form one of (if not the) best explanations of how high GM level chess is. He calculated all of those variations in a couple of minutes total. Meanwhile, he shows how these are all filled with crazy tactics. Just realise, he’s listing all of these rejected lines because 5-10 moves down the road there’s a crazy tactic that I couldn’t even spot when looking at the position and given a minute or so to think. And for Danya, it’s just one of the many, many variations that he has to go over in his head. Absolutely insane.

Daniel plays the Caro Kann exchange. He sacks his isolated pawn for not only the bishop pair, but also for quick development. He then uses his active pieces to hunt the queen and anything else he can find. After an initial failure to meet success he finally captures a knight. There is something to be said about making your own luck! The enthusiasm of a determined and powerful opponent is quite intimidating. Just having his pieces centrally placed makes him incredibly dangerous. The moral of this story is to never accept Greek gifts from Daniel ;) Computer would take the IQP pawn but we shouldn't. White was perhaps just too quick to take it. As Finegold would say; He needs more prophylaxis!
