I grew up with a house that had a fireplace as it’s not uncommon for us to lose power in the winter due to snow. The best fire starter? Not those expensive little sawdust bricks…lint, from a dryer lint trap. A small amount of that lint can make starting a fire insanely easy. If you haven’t seen how fast that stuff goes up in flames, you should- SAFELY -try it for yourself.
I work in a linens department, on our industrial sized dryer it clearly says “empty lint filter every day” I got sick one week and couldn’t come in for a while, so my company got some of the people from other departments to pick up the slack, I came back to a lint filter that looked like a BLANKET!
No surprise there. It seems as if it was a case of: "It's not MY job!" 🙄 If a fire had ensued, they probably would've tried to blame you. However, you'd simply need to point out the large sign on the massive dryer and ask if the company made a habit of hiring illiterate morons. 🙄🤔🤨 Their response would have been EPIC!! 😅😂🤣 Buncha derps! 🤪😜🤭
I had to teach my mother the same thing. Since the lint filter wasn't inside the drum like she was used to, she thought it didn't have one. She was complaining about how long it took to dry anything. When I took a look at it, there was enough lint to make a blanket.
Same with my mom. She didn't see the link tray when she opened the dryer door. She thought it was some new technology. She never paid attention to the slot handle on top of the dryer.
Haha I love cleaning out peoples lint filter when I'm at their house and taking the lint home without them knowing. I usually put it in vinegar and store it in my closet. Sometimes I'll rub it and make it into shapes or put it in my pockets to use as hand warmers. And if you burn it it smells really good too. 😊 I'm a certified ~Lint Lover~ 😅

Dryers don’t get hot enough to start a fire…if you clean the lint filter. If you don’t, it causes heat stacking, which is just a continuous buildup of heat until you get temperatures high enough to reach combustion.

@@SPLPuroOne true, but let's be honest..nobody and their father reads the whole manual. I personally just think it all comes down to experience and habit.

I have seen dryers in stores, I only said I've never seen one to exaggerate. Edit 2: I'm not a he
1) not all of us can afford new to get the manual lol, 2) not all dryers filters are putin the same spot. I've discovered 3, one like the video, one at the bottom of the door and one in the back of the drum
Literally the first thing I was taught about doing my own laundry was to clean out the lint tray in between uses. Honestly, I love my mum for teaching me how to adult, I owe it to her.
I know I was taught that too. I started doing laundry about 10. I thought it was common sense kind of thing. I even put mine in the sink and use the sprayer to rinse it off every once in awhile to just clean it extra good then I let it air dry for few minutes before I put it back.
My parents always used to tell me "if you don't clean the filter, the house will burn down" never forgot to clean the filter again, and if and when I did I stopped the dryer mid drying and cleaned it. 😂😂
Def possible but takes a lot. Keeping the lint is useful for firestarter too, shit lights so easy, toss it under some sticks and paper in a firepit and just tap it with a flame, it'll ignite easily
Those people that are so obviously incompetent to not know that you have to clean a dryer lint filter shouldn't be allowed on their own. I bet they are geniuses behind the wheel of a vehicle 🤔
And some people have always lived in appt with no washer/dryer. So, there is no way for them to know. In laundry mats the staff usually do that. All you do is load, wash, dry, fold. Some even give you free detergent lol
It's like the conversation I had with my dad with the toaster. The toaster kept setting the smoke alarm off. He never emptied the crumb tray. It was so full of crumbs that it went up to the elements, causing the smoke. He didn't know it had one (even though I told him more than once)
I’m doing laundry now lol, and that’s the FIRST thing I do. I don’t put ANYTHING in the dryer until I clean the lint trap!!!! Shame on whoever “raised” this woman!!!
Same and it is always kind of disappointing. I want that satisfying peel of unclogging a lot at a time, but alas, it's better than anywhere between "not working as intended" and "Oh no my house is on fire with my dog stuck inside"
This reminds me of when I first met my fiance. I was helping him with laundry and told him to clean the dryer filter while I put the next load in. He looked at me like I was crazy. I pulled the filter out and it was literally caked on just like the one in the video 🤦♀️ Yelled at him that this could have caused a fire and killed him and his roommates. They started cleaning it every time after that lmao
Same thing with my husband before we got married. We lived in an apartment and the dryers in our laundromat were designed where the filters are accessible. He said he didn't know about the lint tray.
I used to live with a couple, and the woman kept everything spotless. Imagine my surprise when I went to do laundry and the filter was clogged like this…but in perfect layers of white, gray and colors. It was striking how even when she failed to clean something the meticulousness still showed 😂
Many people are raised in apartment complexes where they go and use coin-operated dryers that are cleaned out by other people. When they get their own home they don't understand that the dryer has to be cleaned out by them!
You still clean the filter in apt complexes lmao. What you think there's someone coming between every cycle cleaning it out? Or ever for that matter? No, other people in the building are cleaning it out after you use it. It doesn't matter where you live, you clean the filter when you're done, or unless you're stupid like this person or a lazy bum
I had a friend who's house burnt down from lint buildup. She pulled the screen filter and cleaned it always. But you also have to have it serviced to clean the lint that misses the filter. That's what started her fire. You can also clean that yourself. It's very visible when you just take the back off. Very easy way to keep from having your house burn to the ground like hers.
Customer said, "My car won't start. It cranks and cranks but never turns over." I asked her if she's out of gas. Her response was, "But aren't all cars electric now? I didn't know it took gas."
Just moved into student accommodations and the filter was an 8-9cm thick layer of fluff... that's about 3.5 inches worth of fabric discard for imperial-users. It was literally in the door of the machine, first thing you see when you open it likeeee what?!??
Most driers I've seen the filter isn't on the top usually it's in the door and pretty easy to see and pull out .. I've never seen a top filter one before but eww why wouldnt she check like everything that does pull out she should have pulled it to check or most ppl have been shown where it was or read the instruction Manuel it literally has a picture on 2 Nd or 3rd page of parts to the washing machine lol
When I visited my late grandma, I discovered that she had the same issue. I would throw them away and she got mad at me because she thought it was for insulation lol. Told her it's lint so that's why her dryer wasn't working. She didn't believe me and kept the "insulation" in...
That much will make it take like double the time to dry too so that means more electricity used and paid for by her. So sad. I didn't realize my roommate wasn't emptying when she used dryer and she kept complaining it took forever to dry and her boyfriend pulled it out and was thick like that one too. He laughed and called it a quilt. I was glad it didn't cause a fire tbh
To be fair you can keep it and use it for hobo candles in a pinch for emergencies. Maybe try gently reminding her that it can cause fires (maybe show her the manual?) If built up but that she can collect it in bag/jars and google/Pinterest some diy projects to use it for. That way it still has a purpose in her head and can give y'all something to do as a project together! Our grandparents are stubborn and have made it this far, they're not likely to turn back on their virtues now 😂
This happened to a friend of mine. He mentioned that the dryer in his apartment was taking forever to dry his clothes so I checked the lint trap and busted out laughing! I counted 32 different colored layers of dryer lint on the trap. He learned a valuable lesson that day. 😆
Same experience with my friend, it was taking hours to dry one load. I checked the filter (which for her should have been easy to find, I went straight to it), the lint was about 2 inches thick. I didn't laugh, I just said damn (name) and shook my head.
You should have told them that the they could get some money back from their purchase of the dryer if they keep the lint in a large zip lock bag and once a year just take it into the store where they got it and hand it to the cashier. The cashier gives you around a year's supply of fire starting material for camping etc and best part is that it's basically free. 😊👌 👀 😊 😂

I knew dryers had a lint filter since I was a little kid in the 90’s. Had to take one apart (was in my 20’s) because it’s fan that moves the air inside the dryer got clogged and wasn’t drying properly. Cleaned it out and it worked perfectly again. Was self taught for repairing things. I just love to learn how stuff works.
If I ever do get a dryer I will remember this as I grew up in a household without a dryer and wouldn't have known about this unless I read a dryer manual which I would because it's common sense
Repair man came to fix my parents dryer as the rollers had failed. He commented on how well we maintained it as it had virtually no lint. Used every day for 7 people. Maintenance is key.
I always got annoyed with my old roommate because she left me to clean out the filter. One day while doing clothes she went “isn’t it so weird that this dryer doesn’t have a filter?”
You can't know if your never told. Coming from a middle class family I learned to use these appliances from watching my mom use them plus her showing me so I could clean my own room. Or us the washer and dryer myself. But so.ebody had to teach my mom.
I experienced this 1st hand 🤦♀️ My dad's ex, allowed me to use her washer n dryer after she finished her laundry. Took her 5 hrs to dry 2 small loads. Once it was my turn, I went to clean out the filter and it was stuck. I finally got it out and I kid you not, there was enough lent to make a small quilt (way more then what was shown here). She was amazed when my load of clothes dried in 30 minutes 😂 She said she never knew it was there and she had the dryer for 3 yrs 💀
Yeah I had a tenant that hadn't cleaned it in a year. She said she didn't know. Some people aren't raised with their own equipment so they don't know how to maintain it. After it was cleaned she said her clothes got dry faster. You think?!
Im genuinely glad that the house is still standing and a noise is all that happened. I wouldn't wish a house fire on anyone.❤ Mine did not start the same way when I was a kid but seriously im telling you, I'm glad it wasn't worse for her!

So glad the filter in my dryer is obvious! It says to change it one a day/every wash and has the fire hazard in big letters. Would of probably missed it as well otherwise.
Fun fact: just like that wad of lint can start a dryer fire, it can be used as an incendiary device for camp fires, fire pits, and BBQ’s but you do want use something safe to hold it while igniting it, like a metal hanger twisted to function as a holder or sticks
One of my neighbors’ dryer caught on fire because she never cleaned the filter. After the firemen left, her teenaged son told me that a fireman had told them that the fire was caused because the dryer filter had never been cleaned. When I spoke to my neighbor, she told me that she never knew you were supposed to clean a dryer filter.
Our dryer caught fire because of this. We were speed running laundry and I guess we forget to check it after 1-2 loads and I smelled smoke. Everything except the dryer was okay.
My mom had us doing ALL the chores and laundry after proper training by 9 years old. We loved it. I hated finding out there was something important I didnt know about. Like checking and changing the oil in your car. This stuff is all important and necessary to teach.
I did costumes at a playhouse attached to a very prestigious technical college. I washed and then dried some costumes. Being an experienced adult, I knew to check the filter. There was 2" of lint. So packed down, you could have used it as a blanket. It came off the screen in one piece. Not one of those very, very smart young adults attending that college knew what it was or where it came from. We had a short meeting about washers and dryers. And not damaging the building they were placed in. In hindsight, it was very, very funny. The looks on their faces. Especially since we had to have that meeting multiple times that year.

I grew up with a house that had a fireplace as it’s not uncommon for us to lose power in the winter due to snow. The best fire starter? Not those expensive little sawdust bricks…lint, from a dryer lint trap. A small amount of that lint can make starting a fire insanely easy.
Sometimes, you have to scare the stupid out of people.
Yeah, sometimes yelling at a guy is what's needed to teach them something.
Many people are raised in apartment complexes where they go and use coin-operated dryers that are cleaned out by other people. When they get their own home they don't understand that the dryer has to be cleaned out by them!
This is why reading appliance manuals is worthwhile
My sister does and cleans those as well, because nobody else does. Needs to be done after each use.
It doesn't excuse the fact that the internet exists and can teach you about clothes dryers 😂
I always cleaned the lint filters at the laundromat. It's as automatic as using detergent in the washing machine.

One of the most annoying parts of living in an apartment with a shared laundry room is that at least half of the other people living there have no idea there is a lint trap. So almost every time i go to do laundry, im cleaning it before and after i use the dryer.
This is what happens when your parents never make you do laundry. Hell, I was made to do almost every chore while using a damn chair😂. The 80's were a fine time to grow up.
I agree. It's important for both sexes to know how to do basic stuff. I plead the fifth. I don't remember how to change a tire. I should with the junker cars I had in 81,82 😂
I remenber the chair days
@@donnalawrence9054 My daddy is a truck driver so we all had to learn simple things like, read a map, change a tire, know what was north, south, east & west. I recently changed a tire for my niece when I thought I had forgotten. It comes right back to you as soon as you get a jack in your hands.
My parent taught me that I have to be a able to function properly by myself after becoming an adult (know how to wash clothes/dishes and light maintenance of things around the house) and now I simply pass it to the younger generation but I add cooking and basic digital know how to that list. I dont have kids my own and not good with them because I simply cant match the energy, but sharing those knowledge gave me good topic whenever I have to talk with them (cousin/niece)
My son began doing his own laundry at 10 years old. This was in the 2010’s. better to teach them young.
I love cleaning the filter!!! its my favourite part of doing laundry❤
That "dumb ways to die" was timed too perfectly! lol
That dumb ways to die audio got me dying 😂
I love my husband so much when I say this, but he didn't know that dryers have lint traps until we got married and I started helping him learn how to do his own laundry. I love him so much. He never had to do his own laundry until he moved out of his parents house and it was such a struggle to teach him. Now he's a pro, but he almost burned our apartment down by not cleaning the lint trap
parents, teach your kids how to do chores properly so their significant others don’t have to!! 😂
I love how much you say you love him! I talk like this as well... and I mean it. I love my husband so so much!!! ❤❤
Manchildren be manchildrening
Not his fault he was never taught. I'm sure the parents only ever meant good and wanted to take care of him, but they should've taught him such a basic necessity.
@@fifth. There's a surprising amount of women who still believe firmly in gender roles and purposely don't teach their boys how to do anything for themselves because "That's the woman's job"
The “dumb ways to die” came right on time lol 😂
Our mom taught us to do laundry as young teens… and always check the filter, so you would not have a fire!
smart
My dad taught me and I actually had to teach my friends. I learned this stuff before I was five.
Some people didn't grow up using dryers
@@DNKG669 its not "smart" its neccasary
I learned from an early age to clean the lint trap after each use
We were taught well,me too😅
Bless her heart. I'm glad that she got that worked out before it got too bad🥰
There is another place in a dryer that catches lint. It is in the back, and you have to take the back off to find it !
@@anitablades6033and in some it’s in the bottom of the dryer entry right below the door opens
It's the background music singing Dumb ways to dieeee 🎶 for me, lmao 🤣
I bet she could navigate social media like she invented it though

In case people are interested, you can save your lint to start your summer firepits!
They work great!
You can also put then in something like a suet cage outside for birds to nest with!
Some people just don't know... glad she reached out for help because that could have very well started a fire.
It would honestly be helpful if there were a label on each new dryer. Really...if it's that important...
That’s a serious fire hazard bro
