Happy 40th birthday to Cruel Summer. Forty years ago today, Monday June 27, 1983, Cruel Summer was released. This song will stay in my memory forever, because it also embodies my attitude towards life in the 80s and that is what made the great music of that time so special to me. Behind all the energy and joie de vivre you can feel that pain and longing that deep emotions bring with them. The more years go by, the more clearly I hear this longing. She has always been an important part of me and always will be. Thank you Bananarama and thank you Cruel Summer. Congratulations from Berlin, Germany
Absolutely! Happy 40th to Bananarama and Cruel Summer. I was going into my junior year in HS in the fall of '83 when this came out in the summer of that year. It was once of the best summers in my life and this song is summer. It was in heavy rotation on MTV back in the day and of course who could forget it was in Karate Kid.
On June 27th, this song was played on the 80s 80s station in Germany. I highly recommend to all lovers of 80s music, but especially to American listeners, as they will probably hear great 80s tracks from Europe that never made it to the radio waves stateside.
It truly is memorable. I'm just tearing listen to this and the memories it brings back. The so many friends and family we used to hang with listening to this but who are no longer present. The 80's can never be replicated
Best decade ever. Music, movies, and merchandise. Never will we see those wonderful years again but I was glad to be a part of them and will always have the memories.
Hey! Marke ! I am 52 as well and this song is the first record I bought with my piggy bank. I am listening g to it right now as I sip my morning coffee, getting up at Times to dance…I probably still will 30 years ahead from now. Have a great day!
This song is nostalgia. There's an ethereal quality to the song. Because the three sing the whole song in unison, not just the chorus, it almost sounds like whispering. This song always sends me.
To me, the best part is the simplicity. The music video could have been made for a few grand, the dancing isn't spectacular (yet seems real), and the women are clearly having fun. As a bonus to a metalhead, check out Cry for the Earth Bounds by Ensiferum if you never have. ;)

This song has something poignantly mystical and melancholy longing about it. The gray-blue fading light in the big city backdrop at 2:10 reinforces this enchanting impression.
bro its the 80s in general, theres something different about this time period and i dont know what it is. It was some sort of transition? I dont know but sometimes i get overwhelmed but looking at pictures and videos of the time. Many MANY people share the same feelings, even if they werent alive at this time. It was truly special, maybe one of if not the more significant point in history. I am truly blessed to have been able to experience it,
it was really hot that summer too. kinda slowed everything down and made it surreal. then this song came out. i still remember wiping sweat of my shoulder wearing a wife beater like WTF. the a year or 2 later came game 6. magic
This song was made in 1983. It got lost in tunes like "Every Breath You Take" by The Police, "Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson, "Africa" by Toto, and "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" by The Culture Club. But it STILL is one of the best songs of that year. It just popped into my head for no reason today and here I am 🙂 That's the power of good music. It never really goes away.
@@phukfone8428 I dig what you're saying but unless you have their album, the CD, or you listen to it on your Bluetooth, I doubt very seriously you've heard Cruel Summer every summer for the past 40 years 🙂 When I said "Good music never really goes away" that means that good music is deep inside of your psyche and you will never forget it.
Mom, I was 10 in 1984 and I remember us going to the movie theaters back in the day and watching Karate Kid together. Every time I hear this song I think of you. Now your'e gone... I miss you so much! It's been a cruel summer ever since.
*I was Born in 86. I remember this being one of my favorite songs at the skating rink as a kid in 90s. Here I am still jamming this in August of 2023!*
The summers are only getting more cruel ... this song called it over forty years ago! Smashing beat, lyrics, vocals and instrumentation - just another song that demonstrates how monumental eighties music WAS AND STILL IS
Well they weren’t exactly “carefree”. The was a major economic recession, renewed Cold War tensions, the AIDS epidemic, etc. But a lot of art at the time had a very “live for today” attitude, because any day could be your last.
Me, a baby to a young boy not realising how great the music was and also liked the 90’s and from there on music has gone to absolute trash, I mean at what point did it go so horribly wrong?
@@eccawarrior around 2004-2008 when all the “big names” rose up. Ya know, Justin Bieber, pretty much every other wannabe rapper kid at the time, all the trash that crawled its way out of the woodworks and found a home in places like the early apps like SoundCloud and stuff.
Every time I hear this song, it takes me back to the summer of 1983. I swear, I can close my eyes and smell the chlorine in the air from the swimming pools!!
yknow if u search a bit u can find bands who make music which sounds like in the 80's because the style of the music became so iconic ppl are tryna recreate it, and with cellphones and internet and youtube, you can listen to the music you like wherever you want so yeah
thomas mitchell I'm also 49 years old and remember how much I fancied banannarama especially the middle one was my favourite. Mostly child hood memories in the 80's....90's was best for pubs and clubs plus the dance music especially early 90's ? I hit the pubs and clubs every weekend ,young ,single and playing the field made this most fun time in my life for obvious reasons . Happy days
I was born in Poland in 86' and I remember Bananarama being huge in Europe. We still have their cassettes at my parents house where I am for Christmas right now. Merry Everything everyone.
@@RandomSkyeRosesWell, the 80s weren't really pretty in the USSR and their allies. Wage and economic stagnation, an influx of American/Western European goods that were sold on black markets and expensive as hell. The music was good though.
I was born in '07 and grew up in the 2010s. Everyone was listing to Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift 🤢 but I was growing up on bananarama, tears for fears, madvillain, huey lewis and the news, and especially the footloose soundtrack
it was rough for me too. Was growing up, tough home life (mom was abusive), real hard time in school with kids teasing me incessantly... BUT.... I could stay out after dark for while, walk to the corner store at dark by myself, play outside, didn't have video games or cell phones, great music and TV. So despite all the badness I had in the 1980s, I still look back on it fondly for those things and wish I'd realized back then how great it was & that they'd go.
80s music was produced in an open audio sound with lots of dynamics (hard versus soft sounds). They already used digital audio which were recorded in an actual room, where as these days the audio never leaves the computer which is the cause of the lack of high dynamics and makes for a tiresome sound image where everything is competing.
@@KNOWHOPE72 The 60s were The Beatles, the all time leader in record sales. Why because there still selling music 50 + years after they broke up. Add to that the Rolling Stones, The Who, Jimi Hendrix who set the standard for modern electric guitarists, Janis Joplin. Not to mention the great R&B & soul artists & groups. I love the 80s but please no comparison with the 60s.
@John Sluder, it seems like music back then embraced family, hope and opportunity. We had a taste of technology but we didn't choke on it like we do today. We had a sense of unity until smartphones took over. It's really sad. Human emotion is getting replaced by social media and then we wonder why our music no longer has life.
... 68 too ... I stayed at the bar drinking my bottle of whisky lurking at the girls dancing ... It was cool 3 or 4 times / week ... (France - Strasbourg)
Hot summer streets And the pavements are burning I sit around Trying to smile but The air is so heavy and dry Strange voices are saying Things I can't understand It's too close for comfort This heat has got Right out of hand (Chorus) It's a cruel, cruel summer Leaving me here on my own It's a cruel, cruel summer Now you're gone The city is crowded My friends are away And I'm on my own It's too hot to handle So I got to get up and go
The 80s were great I'd give anything to go back I had the time of my life. Now I'm 51 and old. If the way things were in the 80s never changed it would be a better world now
This music did come back to the limelight in 2011 a grounbreaking album by full mackintosh came out and suddenly a world of gen z underground musicians were making early 80s sounds again
@@last12know30 Then why are you here? And if anyone in this comment section need help, it's likely one who do not know how to respect the opinion of others.
My wife of 18 years passed away 2 months ago today. This song came on the radio, haven't heard it in nearly 20 years, as it played I had to pull over and cry on the steering wheel. Song was always good, really hits close now.:(
The music production on this track was pretty ahead of it's time - it's a timeless classic and a song I enjoy. This came out well before the house craze caught on and dance music became prevalent with SAW. These girls had the right stuff to be famous and they went with it. Nicely done 👍
The 80s was a magical time especially if you were a teenager or in your early 20s...the music that came out in That decade was the best! I think of myself so lucky for being a teenager and in my 20s during that time....
Manuel Ochoa spot on! I arrived back in NYC the summer before and when this song came out I was 22(slim) and listening to this at Rockaway Beach! NYC was still NYC but not as gentrified as it is now.
Most awesome time ever in the world not like today which is violence everywhere everybody was actually happy at that time there is a couple things going on around the world that were bad like the Cold War but it was still a good time to be alive
They absolutely were. I was 14 when this song was a hit. The music was a huge part of how much fun we had. There was music for all tastes, too. Today, everything to me sounds the same, with a few exceptions. Fortunately, this music is still around to listen to even if you're young.
@Onika🦄 We used to have to wait to hear our favorite songs come on the radio or MTV, so it was a build up of anticipation. My siblings and I would be so excited when they would FINALLY play the song we'd been waiting on... Instant gratification of just typing it into UA-cam has no build up. We'd even bet which ones we'd hear first. It may sound silly, but there was a level of excitement that doesn't exist anymore. We might be in the middle of a sentence when it came on, and we'd stop and cheer before "cranking it up" (turning it up loudly) and jamming out to it. Although sometimes I'd record it when it played on the radio or even off the TV with my big ol' boom box, but you could only afford so many blank cassettes at a time so you had to pick and choose which songs you wanted the most. Then you had to save your allowance to buy an album on a cassette tape (if you wanted quality sound) so you had to decide what you wanted the most. You could collaborate with your friends and siblings as to which tapes you were going to buy so you could trade back and forth. What was even better about that was when you bought a tape because of one or two songs and discovered they were often not even the best songs and that there were ones way better on that album that just never made it to the radio. I loved that. Saturdays were the best. We'd wake up and watch some cartoons until we got bored. We couldn't just call an Uber or course, so we rode our bikes everywhere. No pads or helmets, and still never any seriously injuries. Just a skinned knee here and there... You'd just suck it up and keep riding. The malls were amazing. They were almost like our version of the internet. You put your bike in a bike rack and walk around, maybe see another group of friends and maybe they'd join yours, or maybe you'd just talk for a bit and your groups would go back to roaming around in their respective directions. If you were alone, it wouldn't take long for you to hook up with some friends if that's what you wanted. I'd have to be careful who I'd pick because I wasn't really a troublemaker, so I'd avoid the ones who egged houses and stuff and find just the right person or group for me. It would also depend on my mood. Sometimes you'd be looking for someone specific, and may or may not find them. If you did, they may or may not end up joining your pack or you join with theirs. Sometimes your groups would merge... You never knew until it happened. Every moment was like a surprise. Then you'd see a music store in the mall or something, stop in and maybe get that cassette tape you've been wanting... Maybe you stop at a video rental place and carefully browse, because if you got something that sucked, you were stuck with it. You'd have to read the boxes and figure out if it was as interesting as it sounded, or you could rent a "for sure" winner which you've already seen, like Star Wars or something. Then go back to biking, bag of movies tied to your handlebars. There was always something that would happen on the way home for us, like find a construction site with no workers and explore until you found something cool to play with or got chased out, or if you were lucky enough to grow up in Florida like me (it didn't suck back then) you could go to the local swamp patch and see what you could find. My brother once found an old rusted sword blade that turned out to be from Spanish Explorers. Then you may go back to your house and pop in one of those movies and make stovetop popcorn in two or three giant bowls. If you don't know what stovetop popcorn is, you should look it up. It's really fun to make. It was like a disposable aluminum pan with flat aluminum top that would expand as it popped, like a balloon. If the movie sucked, you and your friends could laugh and make fun of it the whole time. If it was great, you tell everyone about it the next day. When the movies were done, we may go back out or we may have played our Atari 2600 games... Cheesy by today's standards, but to us it was a new thing, fun and challenging. Phones weren't for walking around with so everyone could contact you all the time. They we're on cords which were attached to the wall, and if you were on it, so we're you- lol. Phone calls were more like "let's meet at..." or telling someone about something, or if you hit puberty, it was for nervously and awkwardly flirting... Or at least attempting it. Texting is easy. It's not so easy when you have a crush and you're trying not to sound like a dork. You didn't have time to think and erase mistakes, so it's very different. Like I said, we had to work or wait for almost everything so it somehow made it all the more satisfying. I think that's what I miss the most. I haven't felt that joy in a very long time. Now we need phones with us everywhere we go... it's just the way the world has gone, and that's cool. But back then, it was different. Then you could go have fun without checking your phone. You lived in the moment and place you were in, and the people you were with. You could also make up excuses to your parents as to why you're late or where you'd been and if you were smart, they couldn't confirm their suspicion if they thought you were lying. If they can't prove it, they can't punish you. No cameras everywhere, no clicking "location"... Parents had to trust you somewhat and you had to know how to navigate your neighborhood. I don't know if you want me to go on, because I certainly could -lol. But it was the best. If I could go back, I would in a heartbeat. I'd maybe miss the internet and modern day video games to a point (although at the time, you aren't going to miss what didn't exist) but leaving all that behind would be a small price to pay for the wonders of the 80's.
@Onika🦄 I wish that for you as well. It was a great time. More fun and less crazy. I was 10 in 1980, so I got to be a kid, plus of course my teens as the decade went on. I feel like I had the best of both worlds. I wish you could have experienced it.

bro its the 80s in general, theres something different about this time period and i dont know what it is. It was some sort of transition? I dont know but sometimes i get overwhelmed but looking at pictures and videos of the time. Many MANY people share the same feelings, even if they werent alive at this time. It was truly special, maybe one of if not the more significant point in history. I am truly blessed to have been able to experience it,
it was really hot that summer too. kinda slowed everything down and made it surreal. then this song came out. i still remember wiping sweat of my shoulder wearing a wife beater like WTF. the a year or 2 later came game 6. magic

Have you heard what Gen Z and Gen A are listening to these days? they don't even know what real music even is when they hear it.
The song never went away. I've heard it every summer for the last 40 years
@@phukfone8428 I dig what you're saying but unless you have their album, the CD, or you listen to it on your Bluetooth, I doubt very seriously you've heard Cruel Summer every summer for the past 40 years 🙂 When I said "Good music never really goes away" that means that good music is deep inside of your psyche and you will never forget it.

Yep! Basically.
The nostalgia from this song alone.
The 80's produced the best feel good pop music, not to mention the most magical music.
80s music was produced in an open audio sound with lots of dynamics (hard versus soft sounds). They already used digital audio which were recorded in an actual room, where as these days the audio never leaves the computer which is the cause of the lack of high dynamics and makes for a tiresome sound image where everything is competing.
I mean idk the 70s started the psychedelic thing so 80s is a fresher feel on a slightly psychedelic funky pop
Thats funny, I grew up and feel the same way about the sixties.
@@jamesofalo6247 They say every generation feels the decade of their youth was the best. Yet the 80''s had genuinely MAGICAL music, TV and movies.

Freer and easier. Kids out playing, everybody talking, not stuck with their heads in their phones like zombies 😉
They look so cute in their overalls, the 80s look like they were a fun time to be alive 😭
They absolutely were. I was 14 when this song was a hit. The music was a huge part of how much fun we had. There was music for all tastes, too. Today, everything to me sounds the same, with a few exceptions. Fortunately, this music is still around to listen to even if you're young.
Indeed, it was. Great time.
It was amazing. I miss it.
