Unfortunaly this doesnt save the kids, doing these steps wont maken them appear in the orphanage in novigrad.
They only appear in the orphanage if you release the tree spirit in the quest (you get a special line from the tree spirit that shell save the kids). If you do it before meeting the crones or during Johnnys quest you wont get that special line and the kids wont appear in the orphanage.
Currently there is no way to actually save both the kids and Anna.
Ive just done this in next gen edition, I may return with news if they've updated it or not

It is possible to save both Anna and the children. Taken from steam forums:
To avoid this and save both the children and Anna, start Ladies of the Wood as you normally would up until the part where you help Johnny regain his voice. Then when he tells you to follow him back to the orphanage, leave instead and go to the Whispering Hillock and speak to the Tree Spirit. Agree to do the ritual. You should already have the feather. Go and collect her bones and then find a black horse. Return with everything and begin the ritual. She will then possess the horse and leave.
Go back to the swamp and resume following Johnny. Speak with the Crones, agreed to do as they ask. Get the dagger from Anna and go to Downwarren. Speak to the Ealdorman and get his payment (the ear) and return to the bog. Speak again with the Crones and tell them you freed the spirit. They will now know that the spirit freed the children and not Anna, and she won't be cursed. They'll be angry at you for deceiving them but they'll keep their end of the bargain and tell you what happened to Ciri. End of quest.
The issue is that the mother doesn't talk about saving the children.Edit because I forgot to mention, I just tried this and the kids disappeared and the mother didn't mention saving anyone since we freed it. So, it's like you're unaware of the crones possible threat towards the kids bc Johnny hasn't taken you. And so, the tree spirit doesn't know.

For me it's the randoms who make this game. Like that one optional part of The Play's The Thing where you can help the Puffins. The way those bandits harassing them talk always had me in stitches, same with peasants or the Baron's men.

Good ending? "She who knows" is free, the kids are still eaten and Anna still lost her mind. I think this is the definitive worst ending.
The book "She Who Knows" is propaganda.
If you view She Who Knows, The Ladies of the Woods, and the dialog you have with the Ealderman together, they all contradict each other, leave huge illogical gaps in their lies, and are completely silent about the fact the the Crones demand the people of Downwarren bring their children to the Crones to garner favors from them. Why?
We find out that it's because the children are being eaten by the Crones. They say it themselves in their flashback dialogs from when Ciri arrived in Crookback Bog. So if you play through this side-quest complex in the order you are expected to--from the Baron, to the Orphanage, speak to the children and Anna, speak to the Crones, go to Downwarren, speak to the Ealderman, go to the Whispering Hillock, speak, to the Spirit who says she can save the children--you absolutely know the Crones are evil, learned through your own observations.
The only thing supporting the Spirit being evil are books which contradict each other and what you can observer yourself. Ergo, it would be foolish to believe anything they state without corroboration from other strong independent source(s).
That the Sprit killed the people of Downwarren is not evil. They feed the Crones their own children, and give them the tools they need to spin their listening web across the Bog and beyond. Killing them is no more evil than killing the soldiers of your enemy, as innocent as they might be, when they are not in the army of the enemy; they are in the army, and are just fair game--the Downwarreners are the supporters of the Crones and are thus fair game.
In the bad ending you save the tree after talking to the witches so the kids live but anna gets turned to a monster, baron commits suicide and the village gets destroyed so this is the best option

@@arekbaszczyk574 From the possible endings, Anna and Phillip dying is indeed sorrowful, but they have had years to find a reasonable solution to their issues, which has already become an enormous burdone on their only child The children in the orphanage are innocent of all misdeeds. Simply their existence in the orphanage, whether abandoned by their parents or resulting from the loss their parents, is a tragedy. The deaths of children of Downwarren as well is tragic as well, they are also innocent of anything, but there is always a doom hanging over their heads; a doom which might well energize the Crones and thus help perpetuate the Crone's dominion over Velen; a doom coming directly from their parents.
There is no option in the game to save the children of Downwarren, but there is one to rescue the orphans from the Bog. Any decision you make conscientiously in such a situation, is in its nature difficult, but in this case, I think the only acceptable choice is obviously to save the orphans.

I didn't go to the tree early but still got the same "good ending for Anna". I killed the tree spirit because I think it kills the villagers sometime after it is freed. But that means the kids died to save Anna and the villagers as others have pointed out.
tree spirit gets the revenge on villagers and save the kids at the same time. It's either save tree spirit and kids (villagers and anna dies) or save anna and villagers (tree spirit and kids die) but in this playthrough you save tree spirit and anna (kids and villagers die)

@@DerOrso The spirit is actually the mother of one of the crones according to some ingame info puzzle pieces. Trapped by the crones for being like them but even more evil. That's what I based it on.
That and it literally hypnotize people to go towards it to their death to "feed nature".
The consequences of doing it this way is :
Lost of life the villagers of downwarren
Lost of life the kids at the swamp (you didn't asked the horse to save them)
but
Anna live
Mythical horse live
you pissed of the crones.
thus with the intention of saving mythical horse and anna you killed a village and the kids.

if you view it at utilitarian angle, fulfilling the crones request will save the most lives because you doesn't know whether the tree ghost is bad or not and you wouldn't know untill the end of the quest that the kids are gonna be eaten. Even so its only about 5 orphan vs fully functioning villages.
But you would feels bad because you're forced to help your enemies killing their opponent thus make their influence stronger.
@@Ren-bj4xmit’s okay because most of the crones die near the end of the game anyway and if you choose to let Ciri die, Geralt kills the final one. This means that in Velen, no child ever has to get sacrificed again and the villagers are not dependent on these evil witches anymore (who might even have caused most of the suffering in secret, forcing the villagers to desperately turn to them to deal with the curses they created). She who knows is also dead. I think sacrificing Ciri to save a whole region that has been plagued by darkness for a long time is a worthy trade. Then allow Djikstra to win the war and Cerys to rule Skellige. That is the best direction the world can take in my opinion. Obviously sacrificing Ciri, Ves and Roche, and letting the orphans die is a path people might consider immoral but I think the ends justify the means.
I decided to save the orphans, Baron was abusive to everyone, he was hurting and killing his men, beating his wife in a drunken rage. ann was a angry with baron because he killed the man she was cheating with and would sometimes try to kill him or herself. The villagers would willingly sacrifice their kids to the crones, so to me the only true good decision is to save the kids. Who’s only crime was existing.

The tree however, only retaliated against the lackeys of the crones, who were not innocent and numbered in a few dozen at most.
The lesser of two evils is not helping the crones with their dirty work.

You don't have to go to tree first. I have done the ending where she lives and Baron takes her to find a cure. It is in the dialogue you choose. Hell, funny thing is, in the over 1k hours I have played, I have never gotten the curse ending. That was a new one for me. But that is what I love about this game and why it is such a masterpiece.

Thanks for this video, i tried it just now and it works. released the tree spirit first, then talk to Johnny restoring his voice etc. talk to the ealdorman of Downwarren (but i chose not to tell him that i freed the spirit cuz the less they knew the better lol) returned to the crones and there is this very interesting conversation where they actually realized that the missing children is our doing.. not Gran's (Anna) fault. After that continuing the story until we help release Anna (Gran) and she didn't turn into a Hag. The only downside is i saved the children, Anna (gran) from the Hag Curse, prevented Baron's suicide.. but the villager in Downwarren still have to die. well.. this is the best outcome for me. That's the number i can live with hahah
How do you do that long attack??i mean not the swirl but the stront attack that makes you wait till you strike.
downside of this secret ending is the whole village of downwarren killed one another because of the punishment gave by the black mare (whispering hillock)
Please add more details to your videos, like the location of this ancient oak tree ad maybe a voice over so it easier to watch the gameplay and gain information better without having to pause frequently.

best outcome is free the spirit. kill the devil worshippers of downwarren. free the kids. and put the baron and anna out of their misery as theyre terrible people if you think about it. the ghost is technically good just pissed. and tamara can live free without the rotten parents. the baron and anna dissappear either way so might as well save the kids in my opinion
I don't care about the kids, i give the good ending to Barons wife because they deserve a goddamn break.
A break from what, exactly? Anna hates Strenger for killing the man she loves and because he beats her. She hated him so much she used black magic to abort his child.
Baron is just a drunken POS that doesn't want his love, he wants his wife back. Like a possession. He SAYS he cares, but an abuser always SAYS he loves his victim, too.
There is no right choice or wrong one, but saving a bunch of orphans is pretty decent.

Both the barron and Anna are the worst people ever. They had all the chances to be better people and did what they did instead.
I did free the spirit at first but seeing the Baron hang himself and Downwarren's destruction is too much so I reload and kill the tree.. Much better since the Baron lives.. I've been attached to him since he help Ciri so I doesn't want him to die..
Good ending is when she goes insane? Sorry, but there is no cure for her, no matter how much Baron will try.
The problem with this path is that you freed an evil spirit that will wreak havoc on the people of Downwarren and the crones will kill and eat the children. Imho this is the worst possible outcome.
I've taken all possible routes and prefer to save the innocent children or to kill the spirit and save Anna and the villagers - though they're all not innocent, just apathetic to the evil surrounding them, and Anna is just as much a perpetrator as a victim.
Saving anna and the villagers are just the more immediate result. You don't have the impact of letting a crazy spirit run free
The children are not eaten. They are freed. You see this in the conversation between Geralt and the Crone right before they tell the Ciri story.
The spirit isn’t evil. There’s a book in the swamp that explains the lore. She was the rightful ruler of Velen until she made 3 crones as messengers but they betrayed her. The book was also altered to make the crones look good. The spirit is trying to comeback, hence why she only killed the village who worships the crones.
@@mythicalumut6174 You are not wrong but just consider the torment the spirit was in for centuries or maybe even millenia. Confinement and solitude can change the psyche of people in weeks. Even a strong spirit like this one can't survive unchafed. Therefore I judge the spirit by its deeds. Yes, she saved the children but devastating the village of Downwarren is not "good" (in opposition to "evil") either.
@@twinmama42 the spirit killed the village, that village was worshipping the crones and doing bad deeds for the crones. The spirit could have attacked alot more villages around there if she wanted yet that was the only one. The spirit might be bad, but i am not gonna help the crones who eat innocent children. The villagers, Anna and the Baron made their decisions, the children didn’t. The Spirit has good intentions from what we’ve seen in the book and game. Choosing between a greater evil and lesser evil is never good. But atleast the spirit poses less of a threat than the Crones.

Ok, this video confuses me. Is it possible to save the kids and Anna or not? What the point of this video if you can't do both. The normal way of playing already has either choices. If I have to sacrifice the kids to save Anna.

Geralt's a witcher. Witchers' mission is to kill harmful monsters. So I killed the Tree Spirit and two of the three Crones. To kill the third Crone, you must get the bad ending where Ciri dies. Or you can get the good ending and hope Geralt or another witcher kills the remaining Crone. In my first play through, I got the bad ending so I vanquished the last remaining evil Crone.
Unfortunately theres no cutscene where the saved kids are safe, no closure either way
Actually, they appear in the orphanage in novigrad with a special line of dialogue. You can tell by the names of kids there. If you didn't save them, you will just see random kids with reused assets.

@@hotwuk212 It's North West of the Oxenfurt Gate fast travel post, South East of the St. Gregory's Bridge post. The building is located at the top of The Bits district, where it borders Gildorf district, it's very close to some stairs leading up to Gildorf. It's called Marabella's School for Tots, you can look up a map using the name if you're having trouble finding it with these instructions.

No. Theres no mod on whirl and rend. Same effects will be there for everyone
You get those effect when you enchant your swords with severance. This also make their range bigger

There is no good or bad ending. Its supposed to be morally ambiguous. Save the kids and the spirt, villagers and Anna dies. Kill the spirit and save the villagers, Anna lives but goes crazy and kids get eaten.

Personally I prefer the ending where you save the tree. The baron is an abusive pos, and no way would he change his ways if Anna actually got cured, Anna worked with the crones, “took care” of the kids knowingly they’d be offered to the crones, I don’t care for the circumstances that led her to do that it’s just awful. As for the villagers, they’re basically a cult and are in good terms with the crones so I don’t feel bad for them either. The only victims here are the children.

But see this way both the kids and all of downwarren dies. And no matter your personal theory on the people of downwarren and their culpability being involved with crones, there has to be innocent people there. Women, children… that don’t have a say in the villages dealings with crones. Plus there is absolutely no way to know the tree spirit isn’t evil. For me I always just kill the spirit. I don’t think Geralt would ever free something like that, plus he’s on a mission to find Ciri not play Hero in the swamp for zero coin.
Everyone in that town knows what is happening. I heard a mom talk about taking her kids to the forest and left them because they were a burden to her. The lady she told that to just said thats terrible and they just carried on like nothing happened. That town needs to go.
I believe that there is a book that talks about evil spirit and that if released would cause greater havoc then the crones who simply leech off the villagers.
Anyone complaining about the kids, Here’s one solution…. Who cares let’s be honest kids are annoying and if most games had an option to kill them you would, Like in high on life.

The issue I have with this game is replay value. Once you do a quest that’s it, no real replay value. If you grind TOO many levels then the XP is lowered which is SUPER DUMB.
By the time you hit level 99 the cap there is nothing left to do, literally nothing left..
Um. You know how long that takes? And there are many endings and each thing you do can make a difference. Tell me a game where there is more replay value. Lol.

@Michiho. I've played all 4 endings. I've got 6 different playthroughs, maxed level each one, guess what's left to do?? Nothing on each toon nothing is left to do, I've killed every bandit, there isn't a location I haven't been. So no, there isn't a ton of replay value.
They rarely give it updates like Skyrim, or mods like Skyrim. Once you are done that's it, done.
