    Making your own flooring is a ton of work. And that's before installing it. Small spaces take more time than people think. You all did an excellent job.

      +Leslie Cruzado We definitely weren't sure how the walnut stain would turn out but we are extremely happy with it. Though, I'm sure we would have been happy either way because the floor is too stinkin cool to us haha.

    Nicely done. Always nice to see a home become more of a home as you work on it.

    Outstanding!!!!! I'm trying to convince my husband to let me use pallet wood for my all new rustic kitchen countertops. He's not with me yet on using these but I'm not giving up!! I'm going to combine different widths and woods for a beautiful look. Sand the rough parts cut out the sink opening and stain. I'm going to use several countertop epoxy coats to get a level surface and polish to a mirror like shine!

    simplest way for me to get a pattern is to start with half a plank then move the whole strip all the way to the other side then start with the different width plank but use a whole plank
    the next row you start with the sawed of piece of the end of the first row etc etc

    Michael and Jenny, we are completely renovating an old bumper pull and I have enjoyed your detailed how to videos immensely! Thank you for all your time and effort to publish these videos!
    We want to do pallet flooring as well, and so want to know how yours is holding up at this time as well. Are you still happy with that flooring decision? What thickness did you plane your pallet wood to? What thickness subfloor did you lay? What size nails did you use?
    I hope to hear from you soon, as our carpenter friend is trying to talk us out of this and doing vinyl (yuck!)

    • @DuetJustusFam
      @DuetJustusFam  6 років тому +1

      Hello! Thanks for the awesome question. It’s holding up surprisingly well actually. We planed ours to about 4/10th of an inch. The subfloor was already in the RV and I believe it was 1/2 inch. The nails I believe were 3/4 inch and we wood glued the pallets together on the edges and nailed them to the subfloor. The wood putty really doesn’t work well to fill in the holes and has slowly started to crumble but it really doesn’t bother us. Another thing to consider is the amount of work involved. While it’s technically free flooring and feels good to upcycle, you need to factor in your time and it was a TON of work. Looking back, we are glad we did it and that we can say we did it and next time we will look into either doing this again or just finding an environmentally responsible, non toxic manufacturer depending on how much time/money we have. Hope this helps!

      Duet Justus Wow thank you so much for replying...and so quickly!
      That info is of great help. Yes, we may be in a time crunch, but i do expect it to be a long process, and i think worth it if we can't find an inexpensive eco-friendly alternative. We have already collected tons of pallet wood, and i want to do a vinegar/steel wool stain.
      You two are awesome. Hope your travels are still enriching.

    Amazing! I want wood floors in our home and hubby says NO! Our foyer is wood and so hard to keep clean because of the carpet from the 3 rooms off the foyer shed fibers and then there is the area rug that has to be vacuumed, so lots of cleaning equipment comes out to do that floor. A dust mop would be faster & easier! LOL

    • @GOTTshua

    • @DuetJustusFam
      @DuetJustusFam  7 років тому

      Hey there. The important thing to look for is heat treated pallet wood because there aren't chemicals used when treating the wood. We put a seal over the top to make sure to cover up any chemical spills that may have happened when the pallet was in use. Hope this helps :-)

      +houladog No, we haven't. The final reveal video that we just put out is the floor after 6 months and 8,000 on the road. It's held up way better than we were expecting. A week after we hit the road, we had to hammer down a few of the nails that were catching our socks but other than that... nothing. We are happy campers! Literally LOL 😀

      My wife and I bought a 97 model bumper pull and all the things yall have replaced such as moldly walls and in our case, rotted floor joist, we had to learn on our own also. we love what you did on the kitchen counter and will do the same with ours, and we did learn from yall on the sky lights and caulking things up...your rv turned out very nice and you should be very proud of the job you accomplished.

    I have a question. How much weight did the hardwood floor add to the RV? Thanks

    How has it held up to the rigors of driving on the road?

    Pallet wood is usually oak or another heavy dense wood not suitable for weight saving floor required in an RV.... but I have never seen the thin wood you call "pallet wood" was it run thru a planer many times?
