    Great advice for those nearer the beginning of their watch journey Oleg and observations born out by my own experience. My first automatic was a SNX121K Seiko 5 though unlike those you recommend it has a 3 o'clock crown and arabics at 6, 9 & 12. The 7S26 has run faultlessly for way over a decade. A year or two back I finally got fed up with the bracelet because the links that attach to the end link were unfolding and making it feel untrustworthy. That said, it had always functioned perfectly and was regularly refreshed with a kitchen scouring pad.
    So I bought one of the cheap Chinese artisan leather straps you have advocated in the past and fitted it along with a Chinese sapphire crystal. Total cost under £10 shipped to the UK. In all the time I've owned it, my watch has never leaked despite being regularly washed in soapy water to keep it clean , bright and fresh looking and the new sapphire really makes the face sparkle. It has never been serviced.
    My daughter recons the mods have made it a rather fashionable vintage piece so I'm on trend for the first time in my life. Not bad for a total investment of £70 across all this time!
    Would (say) a similarly priced Guanqin be a better bet? Well the Seiko feels to be a better quality item though the 7s26 is outperformed by the NH36 in the Chinese watch. But the Chinese case just falls short of the perceived quality of the Seiko one. Thus, when it comes to longevity and overall quality, I'd bet on the Seiko every time so once again, I agree with you. Great little vid!

      Thanks David. Your Seiko is a perfect example of the quality and the longevity of Seiko 5s. All the best, Oleg and Bond.

    Agree wholeheartedly with everything you say. My only, dislike is too strong a word.... perhaps add on, is that Seiko 5s aren't just great as your first automatic watch, they are great watches full stop. As you mention they are reliable, have such an enormous variety in shapes, sizes, styles, dials, everyone is bound to find one they like, at a super price. What they may lack in specs, they more than make up for in character. Great video man and good points 👍

    Probably going to get hammered for this, but another one to consider for a first automatic would be the Invicta pro diver. I had a Seiko 5 as my first automatic but didn't keep it, I felt it was too small for my wrist and the lack of hand winding was a bit annoying. It was a great watch but not for me. The pro diver gets you the Seiko Nh35 movement with hacking and hand winding, a nice 40mm diameter case, 200m water resistance and a classic if unoriginal design.

    • @americanbreed5116

      Just the Watch well buddy if get hammered so will I,cause I can tell u,I hav 3 40mm and a 47mm Invicta Pro divers,also hav the 9937 Swiss Made model,I hav other models with the nh35,nh36 and 38 open heart,they hav all been great watches for me,so don’t pay attention to the ones that condemn Invicta,they’ve probably never owned one,I own a few all the way up to the 54mm Russian Diver..but right now I think u can get an Invicta 40mm at Amazon for about 79 bucks in different models..

      Pro diver is a great watch. One of the best bezel actions I have in my collection. Has a lot of back play but that’s ok. I changed the insert out for a green one, going for the Rolex Kermit. My future plans are to make it look like a vintage Tudor.
      But for 70$ you really can’t beat it

    • @d3xmeister
      @d3xmeister 5 років тому +2

      Just the Watch Pro Diver is a really good watch. One of my biggest regrets is that Seiko doesn’t make larger versions of these Seiko 5. I find them fantastic and I’m really jealous of people who can wear them. There is really nothing comparable design wise until you get to much more expensive Presages. Of course the Presages are higher quality but if you don’t have the budget, bummer.

    • @24hourstime

    Wholeheartedly agree. My first automatic was a Seiko (I've had hand winders since dinosaurs roamed the earth and still favour them), not a 5 but the same 7S26 movement and it's a rock solid reliable workhorse. The only thing which is reputedly susceptible to getting out of order is the calendar works, but not a sniff of trouble with mine in the ten years or so I've had it, touch wood. There's some remarkably competitive clockwork coming out of China at the moment but for a first auto a Seiko 5 would be my recommendation too.

  • @SkysaxonDragonslayer
    @SkysaxonDragonslayer 5 років тому +7

    I would recommend the Invicta ProDiver...
    On a leather strap it gets a bit more dressy - with its 200m water resistance it is suitable for swimming and any kind of water sport and last but not least the Seiko NH35 movement which offers hacking and handwinding...
    All that for the same or even less amount of money...
    BTW with it’s yellow rotor it looks a bit nicer as the standard 7S36 ...😉

    As I switch between affordable watches, I would actually love a watch like this, with a quartz movement. A solid link bracelet is kind of a must have in this price range, though. €15 Chinese watches can can such relatively good ones.

    A good review. That is a very good choice. I give you another Seiko 5 that is also a good choice.
    Seiko 5 Sports “Fifty-Five Phantoms”. #SNZH53 or #SNZH55. The K1 versions go for as low as $130 new.
    I think you get a lot more for the extra money. The design is sporty but classy enough you could use as a dress watch. 100M WR and a more robust case but still thin enough and would fit most wrists well. Has a better bracelet with unidirectional pins, easier to size. A very nice dial plus a Hardlex-coated 120-click Bezel. Same 7s26 movement and display caseback.
    I had 1 which I sold because I moved on to other watches. There are nice newer Seiko 5 Sport models with the better 4r36 movement. They, of course cost more, maybe a good second watch.

    Buying a Seiko 5 is like shopping at Aldi - everybody does it ;) Well, as a first automatic watch it's not the worst you can get of course, but especially the lack of hand-winding is really annoying, plus the bracelet that could be really better. I mean, such a bracelet with a 40 year old vintage watch - no problem. But with a new Seiko... Well, you've already mentioned that :) I do also think that in general a ProDiver would be the much better choice, but of course one has to like the Submariner style. By the look the S5 is a nice casual / dress watch. Always those decisions we have to make... :D

    I personally would rather have a Chinese homage that has hand winding (Miyota 8215) and a prettier movement if it's displayed. They cost about the same but you get more for the money. Heck even some watches from Gearbest with NH35 or above offer better value IMHO. The watch sizes are also more reasonable with choices from 38-44mm. Ultimately it is up to the wearer.
