I'm glad you made this video to bring attention to solar watches. My first solar watch is a Citizen Eco-drive that I bought 10+ years ago and still going strong. I've never had to bring it in to service and it still runs. I've been a fan of Eco-drive and solar watches ever since. There is a lot of value to never having to worry about a battery change.

True. I just got into eco drive watches and have to agree they are so much better

Love this topic! I cannot speak highly enough about my Citizen CA7045-14E. I needed a watch to wear at my work in a kitchen. Chronograph to time cook cycles, date for product labeling, 100m WR. Switched to a canvas strap and it wears/functions wonderfully.

      It’s a great-looking watch! I just wish they made a smaller version (39mm)

    • @iansclone
      @iansclone 5 місяців тому +1

@@AdAce21 I agree. I pull off this size, but just barely. Also, I wouldn't call it heavy, but it certainly has more heft than I expected and cutting down the size would accommodate that well. For under $200 though, I'm hardly complaining 🙂

Great list. At age 70 & returning to watch wearing (collecting?), I have been tempted by "smart" watches. However, these low-maintenance, accurate solar watches will start my new buying spree. Thanks for your video & clear explanations!

I don't consider smart watches to be watches, they're just wrist worn computers that happen to have a clock on them. In my opinion, to classify as a watch, telling the time must be the only function or at the very least the priority purpose and let's be honest, smart watches all look awful. They look like something from a car dashboard whereas real watches are little kinetic sculptures.

A couple of years ago Jody, I bought the standard black Casioak. Then because of you, yep, I then bought the yellow solar powered version. As I wanted this for work in a quite dirty environment, the yellow wasn’t gonna cut it. So I swapped the solar version from the yellow case into the standard black version case & 🤩🥰👍🏼👌🏼

I enjoy my automatic watches but I do seem to wear my quartz solar watches more. My ugly but functional Casio Wavecepter Tough Solar actually gets the most wrist time. The World Time and timer functions get a lot of use. My other favorite is my 20 year old Citizen Nighthawk Eco Drive. It did die at about 15 years. The back says "Do not remove. Not consumer serviceable.". But I replaced the capacitor (battery) myself. It's really no different than replacing any other watch battery except the capacitor cost about 10 times that of a battery. I also replaced the scratched mineral crystal with a double domed sapphire crystal. That cost as much as a G Shock watch. But it's beautiful.

LOVE SOLARS!!! Jody: On the G5600 don't forget the automatic backlight function. Your video showed A.EL towards the bottom right on the watch screen. You press the light button and hold it down until you see that designation, and then in the dark you tilt your wrist towards you and the backlight comes on automatically without pushing the button. VERY SECRET AGENT. And the battery won't die down from overuse of this function due to the solar recharge aspect.

I've built a sizable solar collection and keep them charged. I did have my first solar watch to conk out. It is a 3 to 4 year old Seiko PADI three hand with orange minute hand on a nice blue dial. It did not show the typical two second jumps. It would just die and I noticed it failing around the 15 second mark. Strange thing is a little rap to it's side or unscrewing the crown and re-seating would start the second hand back up lasting maybe a day. I managed to replace the battery and it has gone back to it's old nice Seiko self. It has been running without error for about a month after the battery replacement. I only mention this in case someone runs into this issue. Changing the rechargeable battery fixed my Seiko solar. Gday.

yes, they do but the one I had could have had drilled-through lug holes. I thought (I've given mine away to a friend) that the lug-pits were too shallow, and the lugs/springbars are IMHO the most venerable part of a watch, especially those used in salt water / sports activities like surfing and diving. (Diving especially when taking tanks on and off - tank straps tend to scrape along forearms etc.)

We thank you for great options and saying the obvious! Being at that point and even willing to pay extra for Solar Quartz and possibly selling off all my other watches 😬 I was recently looking at Junghans ☀️

Thank you for the work in explaining these watches. I have 15 solar watches, one of them being the Tissot Solar Connect. Of course, I have many, many watches that are not solar. One thing I would like to clear up is the myth that a quartz watch never needs maintenance That is true for digital but watches with analog hands have gears and pivots, just like automatic or manual wind watches. Many also have jewels. These watches must be brought in to be cleaned and oiled periodically, though the intervals are longer because there are less moving parts involved. Lastly, solar watches often have 6 months of power if fully charged, but do not rely on that. I learned this the hard way. I would put the watch in a drawer and forget about it. Several years later I would go to use the watch and the battery would be dead with no hope of charging. I now keep all my solar watches in a window where they run for years and years, whether I wear them or not.

Maybe the Tissot needs maintenance, as part of the “business model”…
Japanese analog Quartz don’t need maintenance…

Great list. I also reached the point that I wanted a grab & go watch, so I bought 2. The Citizen Eco-Drive BM8470-11EE (42mm) military style, very reduced design, extremely legible with great lume and a nice green canvas strap for 150 EUR. I also bought a Casio Edifice EF-121 quartz (40mm) with a 10-year battery, a combination dress watch with Explorer vibe, interesting case shape and an absolute strap monster for 55 EUR.

So true, I have a few high end watches like Rolex, IWC, GS etc, which I almost never wear, my daily is a casio solar AQ-S800W. Last year I was in Mexico and got robbed at knife point by two guys and they looked at my watch and didn't even bother 😆

Wouldn't believe I'd ever buy a Fossil but I ended up with two solar powered Defender's of different sizes and finishes recently and the smaller one has had more wrist time than any other in my collection. They're a good looking field watch with decent specs for the money; 316L stainless steel case and bracelet or leather/nylon strap, 100m water resistance, decent lume and Seiko solar powered movement. Ok, the bracelet's a bit jingle jangley but swap it out for a nice silicon and you've got a great tool watch for very little money. Oh yeh, I paid £18 each, brand new with warranty! 😉
