Irena Sendler: Risking Her Life to Save Others

- During World War II, Polish social worker Irena Sendler leveraged her vast network to smuggle food, medicine, and supplies into the Warsaw ghetto in German-occupied Poland-and smuggle Jewish children out. She relied on unconventional and dangerous methods to thwart the Nazis, including orchestrating the escape of infant Elżbieta Kopel (later Ficowska) in a small wooden box.
Nothing stopped Irena. She remained determined to save Jewish lives even after she was arrested, tortured, and sentenced to death. Join us to commemorate Women’s History Month by honoring Irena Sendler’s life and legacy.

Thanks, I have paid to the honorable tribute of Irena Sendler as a very brave woman as the Polish social worker saving the lives of Jewish children on her recuse missions from Holocaust in the Nazi-occupied Poland during WW-2. Recently I read the true story of Irena Sendler. Then I have recognized the legacy of Irena Sendler with appreciation.
Thank you so very much to the two of you and all involved. This was SO beautifully done. I'm a Polish American, and only 4 years ago found out my Polish family was actually secretly Jewish, coming over to The States as "Catholic" during The Holocaust. Years prior, I finished a Bachelor's in Economics by studying abroad in Central Europe SO very close to where my ancestors lived. I am beyond moved to hear of Irena's story, heartened to both see and hear that people have done and are still doing such courageous things - acting diRECTly from their hearts. This is how we ALL need to live. There will always be evil in this world, but if even one more Irena existed in the world, today, it would continue to give SO many more of our disenfranchised youth the hope they need to go on in these troubling times. Our world can be better. WE can be better. Thank you. A million times. Thank you. Every single story means SO very much. Sending love out to all.

I think the biggest lesson to be learnt is that she did it without expecting anything in return. It's important to remember that's though there were many monsterous people during the Second World War, there were also many good people who risked their lives to save others. It would be nice to hear about them as well to give us hope in these dark times we live in.
I read once that she saved 2500 children - all names of where they were sent were kept in her jars. She is such a strong role model for doing what is right.
That is correct, she and her co-workers buried lists of the hidden children in jars in order to keep track of their original and new identities. The aim was to return the children to their original families, if still alive after the war. From October 1943 Irena Sandler was the head of the children's section of Żegota which was the continuation of an earlier aid organization, the Provisional Committee to Aid Jews, Catholic organisation that was founded on 27 September 1942 by Polish Catholic writer/activists Zofia Kossak-Szczucka and Wanda Krahelska-Filipowicz. Most of the children were placed in Catholic institutions. "According to Richard C. Lukas, "The number of Poles who perished at the hands of the Germans for aiding Jews" is difficult to establish, with estimates ranging from several thousand to as high as fifty thousand. Paul R. Bartrop estimated that about 20,000 Żegota operatives were killed by the Nazis, and thousands of others were arrested and imprisoned" One of many examples is family of Ulma, family of Kowalski or Stanislawa Leszczynska the famous in Poland midwife of Auschwitz.
Ms. Irena Sendler actually said:
“If you see a person drowning, even if you can't swim,go anyways.” †
Her quote was actually if you see someone drowning you must help them even if you can’t swim.
Irena is a true role model for future generations. A real symbol of humanity, devotion and of great modesty. She just thought she had done her duty to another human beings. She makes me proud to be a Polish citizen.
