  • In 1999, in Uniontown Kansas, high school teacher Norm Conard and a handful of students stumbled across an unknown hero from the holocaust, Irena Sendler. A research project intended for the classroom soon sparked the interest of the world, and forever changed the lives of everyone involved. This is the Kansas side of the story.
K-state College of Education graduate Sabrina Murphy shares in her experiences with Mr. Conard and project member Megan Felt. For more information about the Irena Sendler Project please visit www.irenasendler.com

Nobel Peace Prize. Nominated 2 times in 2007 and 2008. Al Gore was awarded the 2007 prize for a documentary film. The 2008 award went to Martti Ahtisaari, a banker. This world is strange.

This kind of courage is almost incomprehensible. It borders on a death wish. To save one child, maybe two, was risky and nerve-racking enough to drain one of all strength. The fear must have been petrifying. Yet she did it over and over again. That fact that she survived and carried on is miraculous. People died all around, shot on the spot for the slightest transgressions against the Germans, or for no reason other than being Jewish or Polish. I wonder how many of us could say, that in time of need we would risk our lives to save the life of a stranger. I want to believe I would have the courage and the strength, but I cannot be certain. When we pay homage to Ms. Sendler, let's not forget about all those who worked with her to save so many lives. She didn't do it alone. Irena Sendler and the people whose help she enlisted are an inspiration.

@@KStateCollegeofEducation I have not yet read life in a jar or seen the play but my guess is that she did not have much fear .
I think that is why sometimes there are extraordinary heroes and heroines like Irena because they just don't have as much fear as the average person and that is why they are genuinely Fearless Angel's.
I came here after seeing a short one minute long vid about her

I am not an American but I must say I am so glad these three young women chose to dedicate themselves to remind the world of one of the most beautiful people that has ever lived. I am currently reading the book on Irena Sendler and it's awe inspiring. I also appreciate their professor. He inspired his students into committing themselves to a project that would introduce the world to this great woman. Not many teachers inspire such creativity and dedication. In today's world, we need more of such reminders of the kind and powerfully empathetic people who restore our faith in the goodness of humankind. Thank you for your amazing work.

Since reading about Irena Sendler's story, I have spent many days researching and reading her story. It was only today that I saw that her project was initiated in Kansas. I am proud to say that I earned my Ed.D. at Kansas State University and am now, currently, Professor Emerita at McPherson College in Kansas.
Re: Irena's story - It is very inspiring. I, personally, was deeply affected during my junior high years when my family learned to know a Holocaust survivor who escaped Hitler's Germany. Again and again, Mr. Fischoff would sit me down and say, "Take a seat, Cheanie girl. I must tell you my story. You must listen." And then, he went into great detail, telling me all that he suffered. Our friendship with Mr. Fischoff and his wife, Johanna, sensitized me forever. Johanna was his second wife, as his first died in a concentration camp in Germany.
This story about Irena is truly amazing. Mr. Conrad, I am thrilled that you are inspiring today's youth to stand up for for the forsaken.
A final question: Will the film be distributed country-wide? I would love to see it here in Kansas, but I have many brothers and sisters living in Pennsylvania who would like to see it, also.

In 1991 I, also, graduated from Kansas State University. Thus, I am duly moved at how your students investigated and worked together to glean Irena Sendler's story. Irena's story is the kind of writing that I like to assign to my students, as they learn much about doing what's right from real-life models. Irena, I salute you today for all you did to passage these children to safety.
To the students who gleaned her story: Your efforts and Irena's sacrifice will live on forever. Thank you!

What a truly beautiful story... the loving, merciful and brave heart of Irena... shows without a doubt "that one person, regardless of who they are, can make a difference"...
The concept of "project or performance based learning" is a new concept for me here in Mexico... I thank all of you for that, but above all, for this unforgettable and life changing story... about how the love for others is the only way to change this ever so violent world... coming from someone who has seen some very gruesome things happen here in our country... The land that many of the descendants of the "judío sefarditas" who came with El General Hernán Cortéz, as soldiers, now call home...May YESHUA bless her greatly...Amen...

Irena Sendler was an astonishing woman who inspired and saved thousands.
If I didn't read the book Irena's Children for school, I might have
never came upon this amazing Polish woman. Yeah yeah, this is all mushy
and cheesy but this woman was real. All of this happened, so don't just
shove it aside and leave it there to rot. Invite this into your heart
and let it affect everything you do. Irena Sendler said that her actions
were normal. She meant they should be normal. And I have never agreed
more to any words I have heard. And I never will.
