I drove an '85S2 5 speed for 19 years and miss it every day. Timeless design, near perfect reliability, and 13 second quarter miles made it a winner. Great video!
Back in the mid 90's I worked at a Porsche dealership. We had a 1985 928. It was gold with bright red leather. It had an anniversary on the used car lot because everyone said it was ugly. We blew that car out for $10k. Wish I had that car today!
At 10:36, if you look just inboard of the drivers side headlight, you will see a round black item. That is the headlight motor. The headlights are on that black shaft that runs across and the motor moves the shaft to put them up or down. You cannot have one up and one down as a result. But the interesting thing is that the headlight motor has a black rubber cover. If the motor fails and you need the headlights, you lift the rubber cover off and at the top of the motor there is a round knob, that is what the raised section in the center is. Turn the knob and you can manually raise the headlights.
Another odd fact: This 302 cubic inch 90 degree crossplane V8 gets compared to Chevy and Ford V8's of the same or similar displacement all the time. Problem is, this is not a "small block" engine. The bore spacing is 122 mm or 4.804 inches, which just happens to be the same as a 454 Chevy big block. It has no steel liners in the bore, the aluminum pistons are coated and run in an aluminum and silicon bore. The water jackets are huge, this accounts for the relatively small displacement. '87 and later engine blocks can be bored and stroked out to 6.4 liters. The largest that Porsche ever went with a 928 was the 5.4 liter version in the GTS models.
Fun fact that wasn't mentioned: the transmission is in the rear for better weight distribution. I have an '89 S4 that I'm bringing back to full glory - 58K mi 5 spd, ALL orig paint. Getting items checked off but 4 or 5 still to go. She's a hit at the car shows. "Who's the U-boat Commander?"
I own a 928s4. That front knob by the driver’s side door is actually to adjust the angle of the headlights. For example if you’re carrying something heavy in the back, you might want to adjust the angle of the headlights down a bit.
Also, the rear visors are meant to block the sunlight coming from behind the rear passengers, not in front of them. They’re supposed to be extended all the way back.
The 928S used in the 1985 movie Weird Science is identical to this fine example! I always loved the 911s but a V8 Porsche, c'mon man who cant like that ~ German engineering! I am also Class of '85! The '79 Risky Biz 928 was a 219hp 4.5L 5sp & sold a auction for just under $2 million ✌💖☮
ONE of the three 928's used in Risky Business sold about a year and a half ago for $1.98 million. The car that went into the water was a fire damaged car that had no engine or interior. They painted it the gold color and put it in the lake. It was then fished out and promptly crushed.
@@terrylessmann2274 Yes. And your point is? That car was offered for sale for $55,000 in 2002, and while I was interested, I was changing jobs and couldn't go for it. I had an '85 928S2 5 speed anyway, so I never pursued it. Hindsight is 20/20......
This was that hidden 80’s car I wish NEVER got the attention it did. 2014 I found a 944 for 2k. Little rust nothing crazy but a Porsche for 2k was crazy. I missed it by a DAY! Someone scooped it under my nose and now 10 years later they’re like 8-10k all day
Yeah air cooled 911 is not a 80's car because it's a 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s car... the last ones 964 and 993 being the pinnacles. I love the 928. The Jags on the yard (XK and XJS) are very nice too. Cheers.
the visors are for the back so you dont get burned through the huge rear window, not for your face... Is there any american who will get that ever correct?
Lol, I've owned two 928s for a total of 19 years combined and never once had a single electrical issue with either of them throughout that entire time.
I have owned a 1986 Porsche 928 manual transmission for over 22 years and get Thumbs up from Tesla drivers . 23 gallon fuel tank over 500 miles on the highway and a 5 minute fill up

That color sounds awesome!
@CarsShopsAndCollections It would definitely win a couple Radwood awards!
Sounds great but I love this black and claret combo.
The 928 definitely does not get enough love. What a beautiful example.
Truly is! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for all your love

I had a Pontiac Fiero and one of the headlights would get stuck up all the time… had to manually put it down or drive with one up! lol

My stepfather had an ‘86 928s. Beautiful red on black manual. Such a gorgeous car and my favorite of all time.
Nice!! They are awesome cars!
I’ve owned my 85 928S for 14 years now with no intentions of selling it any time soon.
Great video, thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks for watching and good for you!
I will always love the front engine Porsche from the 80's. I love my 86 944 so much, beautiful and so much fun to drive.
Also, the 944 has basically the same back seats, it's a perfect place to put a bookbag and my camera bag, not much else though 😂
Def no person! lol!

That story gets me every time!
The 928 is the only 100% Porsche designed car in history
Makes it extra special! Thanks for the info!

I enjoyed this. I own a black 1986.5 928S....love it. Wish I had waited though for a nicer example like this guy did. Great looking car!
Thanks for watching! Yes - Mark score one in excellent condition!!

Yes just a rolling shell. My best friend was AD on that film.
As the owner mentioned in the vid, that $1.9m car just recently resold for $1.4m.

A very underappreciated car (looks and performance). People forget that during the last year, the hp improved to 350 hp.
It’s one of my favs!
Epic cars, love them deeply😊🎉

I normally prefer American cars, but I would be happy to have this one in my garage. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you like it
The Porsche 928 is a great car.The thing is it was upstaged by its older brother the 911.To not have a 911 in the Porsche lineup is unthinkable.
Thanks for watching… wild to even think they thought about discontinuing the 911!
The 928 was also in the movie Terminal Bliss with Luke Perry , thats where i first saw it , and then purchased one, and unfortunately sold it
Las Vegas 😊
Only feaatured once in Miami Vice I think. I remember it from Scarface also.
Yeah - That Scarface scene was a classic! My Miami Vice memories are a little foggy. Lol. Thanks for watching!
I have/had many German and Japanese cars and my 928 s4 is my favorite.
Wrong windshieldwipers🧐

Someone filled me in on that… so wild!
Screw the 924
For those who were not around back in the day of the 928, it was a slow selling car that had the electronics dependability and excitement of a Yugo.
Lol, I've owned two 928s for a total of 19 years combined and never once had a single electrical issue with either of them throughout that entire time.
Electrical issues usually came later when they sat for extended periods of time. If you think these cars drive like a Yugo, you haven't driven one...
944 was better. Probably the only Porsche that wasn’t a woman’s car.
944 is cool but it’s no v8
If the 911 was a woman's car, it wouldn't have been called the "widowmaker".
@@Rednospunk right. Out of all Porsches in the 70-80s the 944 is the most likely to be driven by women lol
