- I bought this brand new wrecked 2021 GMC duramax 2500 completely sight unseen at an auction! My Dad and I finally went to our first vehicle auction at our local Copart. We have never done a DeBerti build to a Duramax before so i'm not sure exactly what we’re going to do to this truck just yet.. Anyone have any ideas for us?

COPART loader operator here. In 12.5 years I’ve been doing it I’ve seen a lot of stuff. Everything goes for crazy money now and the fees have gotten astronomical. In most cases the little guys have gotten squeezed out. Looks like you guys got a winner here. Hope I get to catch the update on how both the rebuild and the money side of things work out.
You are correct. The fees have just gotten out of hand. Especially if you need to use a broker. I have bought a few over the years, and got some pretty good deals. My personal truck I bought 4 years ago. 270000 on it miles now, but my last 2 I've actually lost money by the time they showed up and all fees and the non mentioned damages. No more for me. They have priced the little guy out. Tell your bosses thanks for that.

Thats bc within the past 3-4 years... so many UA-camrs have gotten into Copart and IAAI auction walk arounds and rebuilds.... and since the prices jumped during the Covid years... when people had nothing better to do but stay at home... watch videos, etv....so many people are buying these things up and trying to do it themselves!!! The chip shortage that hurt the new car industry didnt help either!!!
My daughter's car was totaled and the car didn't look bad until it was gone over by a repair shop,car was so bad no one wanted it after it was checked out, Copart bought it and sold it with a rebuilt title. Who ever bought this car is completely nuts or someone scamming someone because they paid top dollar for it because it looked ok, but trust me it will be a total nightmare to the owners. I believe these cars shouldn't be resold as they're a total loss for the owner but not the insurance company or copart.
And this is why they have so many on there lots. Have one 10 miles from me and had to expand. They are way to pricey like you said for the average guy
This is what I have been calling for , you guys should do more of these kind of content buy salvage cars build them customize it and sell it. That way you get content for the channel and also you make money too.

If I was you ...... replace the uniside versus splicing in , it’s just grinding spot welds and rent spot welder or have shop spot weld it. Then glue roof sides and spot weld front and back of roof . Rt fender repairable . Upgrade hood . Make sure to have the ADAS system recalibrated

Used to work as an insurance adjuster so I can answer this question...
A insurance company looks at the risk of a full price payout vs. the potential cost of repair. If the repair broaches 15% of the maximum payout, then a insurance company will option to salvage it hoping to get the 30% back...its all about making money and in some situations the insurance company can actually make money by salvaging it.
If you were to part each part out on a $100,000 Truck, you could potentially get 70-80k back ( auction ) obviously, sending a vehicle to auction poses curtain risks like a lower than expected pay back.
Dude you were freaking out so bad when you seen the loader hauling that van around on the forks and then when it picked up your truck you literally jumped outta the truck like woah there buddy!!! 😱 I think it's awesome that you and your pops have the same interests and I've been a fan from way back when you guys had twin turbos on the discovery channel...I wish you guys luck on the build of this truck and hopefully it won't take long to get all the parts you guys need...I can tell that you both are super stoked,awesome content once again....can't wait for the next video 👍

Ur going to love that truck man, I have a 2020 love it. I tow a 5th wheel 16500 lbs no problem. I just put leveling kit and put 35/12.50r18 on and it’s still supper smooth driving. Can’t wait to see the upgrades you have planned.
Good time to buy copart with everything coming out of florida. Picked up a 22 Denali duramax for 48k that has 0 issues and under 20k miles

Built in the Flint MI assy plant make sure you buy the entire AT4 hood and roof . There are parts of that body that are aluminum and steel mated together for weight saving GM did it differently than Ford because GM patented the robotic aluminum welding process years ago and FORD had to rivet and glue their aluminum bodies.
I worked on the launches for both vehicles.

My 2020 Sierre 1500 AT4 with 6.2 and 20 inch wheels sticker price was $66K. I love it. 2024 2500 will offer10 speed with 6.6 gasser. 12,000 miles in 2 years. I am 71 years old and still get a big smile on my face when I step on the gas.

As someone that use to buy and repair cars from auction's it looks like you did well I don't think the parts should be to much, when you finish the panel work it would love to no the parts total, and I can't believe you called the old owner that was a classic I myself wouldn't but then again it's a good way to find out it's history good thinking all the best from Australia 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
When the auction co. gets the cars in they have to sign the title and send it into the state. That is why you get a salvage title.

Very nice pickup! I did the same thing, bought mine off copart back in May of this year in San Antonio, TX. I live in San diego, ca. Nonetheless it was a mission getting it home!

Even if the auction ends on friday by Monday even though they are closed on the weekend your getting charged storage.

Might I have a suggestion in the project build it like you did the ultimate work truck, but more of an overlander so you have work and play basically making yourself the ultimate chase truck
new roof skin, hood and pull some dents shell be good as new.

Roof damage scares away most people. I highly highly recommend going to look at the next one before bidding, got lucky this time.
Here is washington state if a car or truck ends up in a junkyard it has to be sold with a salvage title no matter the condition of the car or truck

I owned a panel beating shop with 36 workers, we would do a lot of auction rebuilds as they always made me good coin.
I'd guess you paid $45 to $55k at a guess. however, I'm not familiar with your market prices.
If that were my truck I'd be replacing the left panel and you can un-pick the roof and there would be a complete replacement roof.
however, I agree with what your old man said and cut and shut pieces but be sure you get all the measurements right especially for the roof panel or take it to a local panel shop they'd have a robot and other

yeah they total stuff quick. Bought one from GA salvage yard..site unseen..very end of frame rail tweeked...had straigned for $500...and rest was cosmetic. 22k miles and saved $25k from book price
That should be a easy fix for you guys. I did notice the passenger door beltline is off from that impact. Nothing a jack and a piece of wood can't fix. 😉

Twin turbos was the best lol I was sick when they stopped airing it until I found you on UA-cam! Looks like you gotta clean canvas to start with, probably go with some sick rims and tires, suspension upgrades and while you're fixing the damage just make it better than it ever was!

I had a tree fall on my 2020 2500 truck July of 2021. It’s been to the body shop 3 time because they had to put a new roof on. These trucks are nothing like the fords. Best info I can give it do not put the the interior and head liner back together until you water test it with a hose. Mine had water coming in through the rear seat belts after the roof was replaced. It took 2 more tries for them to get it right but it gave everyone at the dealership issues. Also, if water gets in, the carpet gets destroyed. Had to replace my entire interior carpet.

They most likely totaled it because of shortage on parts. My superduty was totaled cause they couldn't find some parts, insurance gave me an option of waiting on availability or totaling. I was bummed out to let it go,it was an amazing truck, I bought the same truck as yours but a long bed.

I lost my license 20 years ago. I was 22 and doing what dumb kids do and got behind the wheel impaired. I'm 42 now and just got a 2010 ram 1500 3.7l mint with 189k for 4000. I haven't gotten my license yet but am currently in the process. I'll never jeopardize another person ever by acting a damn fool. Licenses are certainly a privilege and a definite luxury. Sweet catch on this beauty tho

Havent seen it all but ive seen enough to know a ton of the undercarriage and or oil pan is damaged if no brake lines from the fork lift
It was more then likely taken to one of these higher quality collision repair shops that cannot just splice in panels wherever they want and the high strength steel under the cab side panels can't just legally be spliced in or repaired with most manufacturers. These shops have to go by alldata and oem manufacturers repair requirements. I imagine the repair estimate was around 40k on that considering.

It's always scary buying vehicles like this, but it makes it possible to get into a much nicer vehicle while working with a tighter budget!

Funny how all gm did was change the name from “all terrain” and add the number 4 for 4 wheel drive…at4 and everyone’s Gaga over this trim…now they’ve put it on 2500’s and even the SUV’s….weird how nameplates do that…I had a 2012 gmc all terrain Sierra 4x4 with the white body color painted front grill ,definitely was a sweet truck.
Usually it's the insurance company declares it total and pays the owner. Sometimes have to get the title to get re certified with dmv to issue a new one or you will be in a pickle if the salvage company is to destroy it.

Congrats! I've done this a few times too, currently have a 21 Trackhawk I just bought off copart.
Be careful about how you fix it and take lots of pics for the inspector. Pretty sure NC requires it to be inspected in order to be road legal again. They'll probably want proof that you followed GMC sectioning procedures for the section you need to splice above the door. It's gonna be a great build, happy for you!
