I’ve been wearing the Ranger on a rubber strap for about 4 months. Super comfortable it flies under the radar. The avocado color grows on you. I didn’t appreciate it when I first got it, but I enjoy looking at the simple dial now. It’s a completely understated watch, and that’s the beauty of the design.
i agree. It works well with a lot of different strap options. The green isn’t as noticeable in person, but you can pull it out if you switch up the band. I keep it on the bracelet most of the time though. It’s got a quality look while being no nonsense.
Longines has soooo much potential as a brand. After your video interviewing a longines representative I really believe the company is really dialing in its iconic watches and going to become a more common brand to see people wearing
Complete agree they have history…especially in aviation. Lindburgh, Hughes, Earhart. Swatch has the marketing power to ride the moon landings with Omega, why can’t they do something similar with Longines?
Longines should be on the same playing field as Rolex…seriously. The heritage is undoubtedly there. For some reason, Swatch is keeping the brand down, relatively speaking.
I have more expensive, more "interesting" looking watches... but the Ranger, is the watch I wear more than anything else. It's simple some would say boring... but it's understated, highly legible, doesn't need to be babied and pretty much works with any strap you throw on it. I've taken it up mountains for hiking and skiing, camping, used it whilst skateboarding, swimming and even just for work in the office... The "fauxtina" lume that everyone gets offended by is really nice at night time as it glows rather than illuminates and the best part is that it lasts all night. This is one of those watches that looks a bit meh in the photos but once you've lived with it, it makes sense why Tudor did it.
I have worn the Ranger 2022 every day for months. Work, gym, hiking in the smokies, and out and about. Its bracelet is scuffed, scratched and beat. Some nicks on the case itself. Its legible, simple, and no one knows its a Tudor. Perfect everyday watch for me.
I just got the Longines Spirit, amongst these watches, the shiny silver stars and the winged hour glass logo on the dial, just attractive to gaze at! Eye candy!
I bought a Ranger on Teddy's video recommendation, and it is by far my favorite watch. I love the understatement. It isn't a watch that random people look at and wonder If I spent 3 grand on it. They just see a watch. This is a watch for ME. I know what its value is, and I appreciate seeing it on wrist. And when someone that knows comments, it jsut makes it cool that another watch aficionado sees it. But for me, this is the perfect watch.
I bought a Longines Spirit 40mm before Christmas. It's an excellent watch and incredible value. I bought mine (black dial on Leather) in a UK sale from an AD - at a £600 discount. I hadn't planned on buying one that day, but when I saw the price, I ordered one. I'm a big guy and my usual sweet spot is 41-42 - but this 40 fits well and looks good. It's keeping excellent time and the black dial helps "subdue" the black date window - almost to the point of invisibility. The 21mm lug width may worry some but I've had a couple of straps made by a Vietnamese guy I found on Etsy - and most 22mm leather straps will fit a 21mm watch. To sum up, I think it's an excellent watch that stands comparison with other brands whose watches are skating by on the coat tails of "The Emperor's New Clothes"
Swatch with there general lack of marketing more than likely. I defintly grew up seeing the longines watches in magazines along with rolex, tag heuer breitling, tissot but maybe since the days of the internet I see alot less manufacture direct maketing
Swatch about 20 years ago prioritized Asia quite a bit which certainly was not a dumb decision by any means, but it has left some of their brands to be overlooked in the states. Longines is one of them though that has a significant trajectory as they continue to gain the appreciation they rightfully deserve.
I think the brand has always been respected but they've lacked relevant pieces in the catalogue. That seems to be changing and the future looks bright.
@@TeddyBaldassarre Interesting point. I wasn’t aware Swatch focused on Asia in the past. While it makes a lot of sense to me at the Swatch price point 20 years ago. It shows the challenges large groups intrinsically have with brand differentiation. AKA Their ability to walk and chew gum. 😊
The little details of the Longines make it for me - the way the diamond on the seconds hand lines up with the diamond on the dial, the applied elements, the case finishing, etc. just make it feel more premium, without being flashy, compared to the Tudor.
The Longines Spirit is just much more interesting than the Ranger. I feel like if the ranger had outlining on the indices or they were pure white instead of that strange green yellow color it’d look so much better! The ranger is just boring for the price and compared to the rest of the Tudor lineup.
@@rambosonix2514 your statement is a wildly ignorant😑 Tudor ranger still looks like shite in comparison. Also, a better statement is, the Ranger is for people who don’t/can’t afford an Explorer 1.
I like the look of the Spirit, but I own the Ranger. Its fantastic bracelet and extreme legibility are key, but I also have a thing for the Explorer 1016 look. And I did an expedition to Greenland recently, so Tudor's hokey backstory for the watch holds some allure. For me, Ranger is a huge upgrade over my decent 40mm Smiths Everest with the lousy bracelet. I understand the "boring dial" comments, but that's not my day-to-day experience with the Ranger. IRL the numerals and indices don't register as yellow-green as they seem on camera. It's a gem.
First off, as always, great production and insight. That same insight helped me pick my first two watches, the Orient Kamasu and Brew Metric, which I couldn’t be happier with. As for these two featured pieces, I really like the Longines. In its price point, I think it dresses up better than any other aviation watch. Also, I give a lot of respect to Longines for recognizing what Watch enthusiasts want in sizing but also not swinging the pendulum too far.
Since you mentioned Orient, the prices of these pieces remind me of the TREMENDOUS value of the Orient Star Sports Outdoor (RK-AU0204L). For those who don't need a prestigious brand name, the Orient Star is VERY similar in look and specs (not COSC) of the Tudor for a fraction of the cost. Unfortunately, it's hard to find these days.
I have been following longline aviators for quite a while. Love the history and what is for me a must is the Arabic numerals . Two weeks again I encounter the blue face Spirit stopped me dead in my tracks. I am proud to say that on fathers 2023 I bought the watch and I absolutely adore it. I am happy to see that it loved by so many.
I was cross shopping these at my AD and was so torn I couldn't decide. But as soon as I went to unscrew the crown on the Spirit, and saw that it was push pull, the decision was easy. This will be an everyday do everything adventure watch for me, and the lack of peice of mind in the crown was a total killer for the Spirit. The Ranger is a fantastic watch that suffers from Nickback syndrome. It got cool to hate it early on, and people now trash it because "it doesn't quite look right". I don't understand it. It's a fantastic, simple, bullet proof feild watch that will go with you anywhere. I love mine and can't put it down.
Got the Ranger on the bracelet. Love it. For me, the pure simplicity of it makes it more attractive each wear. You can clearly see the quality of the watch, if you're looking, and yet it flies nicely under the radar. I think that 39 is the perfect size for this style of watch. If you knock it, it's fine - your watch is just gaining character. 👌
I am fortunate enough to have both pieces in my collection and find each one offers an amazing experience for the wearer; you would not be wrong to go either way. I do feel the Ranger actually works best on that wonderful NATO option, it really makes the whole piece pop. I had acquired it on the bracelet and then switched over to the NATO, with the bracelet going on my BB58; which I think takes it to an entirely different level and may make it Tudor's ultimate timepiece!
@@pianopourtous9345 actually, no. Teddy is right. The 37mm Spirit is the first size to not have a screw down crown. The others had it. Still, same WR though. 😉
That’s exactly what I’m planning on doing. Buy the Ranger on the steel, put that on the BB58, sell the riveted bracelet and buy the hybrid and nato strap with the £.
Great content, Teddy and team. I recently compared two micro-independent daily watches, Formex Essence 39 and Monta Noble. I definitely pull the trigger on the Formex because of import taxes to EU but I couldn't find any other topic to balance my choice from one way or the other. Hope this example helps you to plan more content or to confirm you this content is absolutely convenient. Great thanks for your work.
I really like them both, but I pulled the trigger on the Ranger the week it came out. I just like the simple design and purpose built feel of a field/tool watch. It is the most comfortable watch in my collection hands down, and the bracelet is fantastic. If you want a watch that wears like a dream, I’d say go for the Ranger.
I own the Longines Spirit 37mm in the black dial. There is a lot of fine details which really make this watch for me - and it's robust nature gives me confidence wearing it as an 'everyday' timepiece.
Would you be comfortable going out and about (rain, sweat, swimming) with it, even thougj it doesn't have a screw-down crown? I like the idea of one-and-done, like the Explorer, and the Longines seems like a good candidate but I'd hate to destroy it!
While I've been giving Tudor a hard look over the last year, I would choose the Longines between these two watches. I like the dial better with the numbers at each hour, the raised numbers, and the seconds above each hour. It gives a more refined look. I do like the Tudor hands better than the Longines hands. I'd rather have a watch that can dress up than dress down.
Owner of a Ranger here: I really think you need to experience the watch in person before making up your mind between the 2. It looks like a completely different when experiencing it in person. The Tudor wears much nicer on my wrist compared to the Longines, and to me the Longines is a more contemporary look while the Ranger goes for a more historical look reminiscent of the vintage explorers and even the old Ranger, so giving it raised polished indicies like many are suggesting wouldn't fit that idea very well. I also promise the green is not as ghastly in person 😂.
When I first saw the Tudor Ranger I though it was boring, however the more exposure I had to it, the more I liked it. When I wear it now I find I can't take my eyes off it. I love my Tudor Ranger. Perfectly simple. Simply perfect.
Nice job evaluating these. I have one constructive criticism. I’m an old collector, engineer, and amateur watch mechanic. One thing no one seems to recognize about Omega, Longines, and other in the swatch group- is that these original companies all went bankrupt, shut down, and the name was resurrected years later by Nicholas Hayek in the 1980’s. The highly skilled personnel, equipment, etc. DOD not transfer. The name and in some cases, patents did. I applaud that the names live on, but it’s not the same as if the companies survived intact.
Both. If you can afford it. Longines in blue on leather, and the Ranger on the bracelet. That blue dial on the Longines is fantastic. Tudor’s crown, the overall feel, the bracelet, the quality is just beyond other watches around that same value.
I love it in 42mm, especially with the green bezel, but I'm weary because of the size (I have a 6.75in wrist). What's your wrist size and width? If you don't mind saying of course.
@@iiTyrull size is 7.5”, width about 3.5”. Perfect fit. I thought about green as well but went with the silver textured dial. Fit/finish/quality/value all fantastic!
My 40mm Longines spirit L3.810.4.03.6 with the matte green dial has a screw in crown. I am confused about that, but I don't know about the 37mm version. For my money the Longines is the better watch. The only issue I have is the lugs are looong when it is on the bracelet. The bracelet quick change system is great though. In a few seconds I have the bracelet off and a green suede strap on. This has caused me to buy multiple leather strap options, and all of them work great with it. Just a beautiful and very versatile watch. Lots of polished shiny bits on the dial with applied indices. It is clearly a better watch.
I'm really liking the understated, retro style of the Ranger. Love how the glass and dial work together. It looks different and beautifully simple from all angles. The only times I've reached for the the Exp39 over the Ranger lately is when really dressing up but even then, I often put the Ranger on black leather. That is sharp. It's got a hip chicness to it. My GF's favorite of all my watches. My Tudors and the Longines Bigeye (sadly sold) both keep as good time as anything I've owned. I'd buy either with confidence.
Titanium Spirit is another segment, IMO. One of the best watches I've ever seen. Cratfmanship is really really marvellous... I prefer this watch (40mm) to Submariner 🙈 in everyday life... "No-date feature" gives a very symmetrical appearance to the watch btw & the red tip of the second arm 💕😊 really lovely... Best hybrid tool watch (field/military/aviator) ever created 🙈
Longines spirit all the way. It's definitely gonna be my next watch (I say but who knows what other watch will tickle my fancy in the meantime) my only frustration is that I don't know which colour I want. I've been leaning towards blue but the videos of the champagne are beautiful. I wish there was a local AD with Longines so I could hopefully see them in person.
@@briandorsey6437 Hey man, why not both? 😆 Have you seen the two new dial variants of the 39mm? Mother of pearl and like a wine red. Gorgeous. I'd get a Longines Spirit AND a Formex 39 hahaha
@@DingoEstrea96 lol I can’t argue with that! I’d actually love to have both. After I wrote that I was thinking maybe I’m being overly harsh on the Spirit 😎 and yup those are the two I’m deciding on or the green.
@@DingoEstrea96 I had a lovely green I just sold! The Seiko MM200 limited edition. Very nice and comfy piece but I sold it to get the real deal SLA053. So now that’s my big watch/Black watch/ and blue dial watch lol but it’s awesome
The more I listen to you, the more I'm becoming a Longines fan. I already bought a Dolce Vita in 2022 based on your recommendation. Looking around for my 2023 acquisition.
Longines Spirit in black for me 😎 my first and only luxury watch and I still love it as much as the day I bought it. Granted, I got the 40mm before it was known they were coming out with a 37. 37 would be a better fit for my wrist, but I’ve already formed an emotional attachment to my 40 😂
Between these two I'd take your pick and be happy. If I was looking for value at a much cheaper price for a GADA I'd pick a Seiko Alpinist/Baby Alpinist/Alpinist 1959 reissue over the Hamilton Murph, and if it had to be a Hamilton (unless you're aa Interstellar fan) I'd get a Khaki Field which is where best Hamilton value lies.
Having a bb36 and spirit37, the spirit is just the better watch, the case finishing is so impressive and fun to look at with the polished and brushed parts, the eta movement inside really impressed me running a +-1s/d with 72hr pr, only things I can criticize is the jangling bracelet and the lugs being slightly too long for my liking. The bb36 is definately getting its ass kicked by the spirit.
I own the Ranger, but I'm a fan of Longines and my grey HydroConquest is an outstanding buy, if I had the choice, Id have both the ranger and the Spirit
I was wearing my Tudor Ranger and on vacation in Taiwan and the Longines Spirit caught my attention yesterday in a serious way at the mall. I wasn’t sure if it’s the vacation syndrome that everything just looks beautiful and/or in the shopping mode but the blue 37mm pilot watch just look amazingly stunning on a blue leather strap.
I have the Longines Spirt prestige in 42mm, blue dial. It came with a bracelet, a leather nato strap and a blue leather band. The bands are quick release, so it makes it simple to change them. This was a huge selling point for me.
Teddy this is brilliant! These watches are out of my price range but at least now I have some knowledge of the products. You have a brilliant way of putting everything on an even level. Your channel worked its way into my channels and I have you to thank that I take my watch collection seriously. Straight up! Teddy your channel is great!
I've owned a longline spirit 37 over the 2m. Black dial. Beautiful watch. I love it. Very comfortable to wear. Very accurate. Only +-1s/day on my wrist. Hard to find this quality in that price range. My wrist is small so 37mm fits perfectly. If I needed to pick one complaint, the antireflective glass gets fingerprints and smudge very easily. I wish they didn't put the coating on the outside... But otherwise it's a great watch!
Nice video. I chose the Tudor because its form factor and aesthetics speak to me more than the Spirit does. I like the Spirit and won’t put it down. I’m amazed how some viewers turn their personal preferences for either of the two into subjective over generalizations. I like what I like and others like what they like. Seems simple to me. I can buy what I like without tearing the other’s choice apart. It’s great to have choice and to be able to buy the one that speaks to the buyer. No regrets for my Ranger, my various Seikos. or any of the other watches I own that speak to me! Cheers!
These comparisons are useful in that after you logically evaluate the various factors - you either find yourself relived the one you really wanted comes out on top, or disappointed that the one you liked comes in second. Then you follow your heart and toss that evaluation table away. 😀
The Longines is my pick. Almost got one in the Longines store in Oahu but had to get the discontinued Conquest VHP first. Next trip I will have to get a Spirit.
As Tudor fanboy whos worn a Ranger for 6 months it gets my vote for the quality of the movement in terms of accuracy and durability. But that Longines is soooo gorgeous, I would say get both - the ranger for casual, the Spirit for best. The only downside is that the Spirit is hard to source, especially the 37mm version. I been looking in every ADs display since it was announced but never seen one in the flesh yet here in the UK
I love my Ranger. It is super comfortable, has a great lume, and it’s not fragile. I need a durable tool watch. I should have considered the Spirit because I would love a date complication. I’m happy with my choice but I should have shopped around more.
Very nice review as usual. I like the way you break down the elements that make the choice of a watch to wear. As a Longines (Zulu) owner I can highly recommend it as it is rich of nice details that locates it closer to a nice Seamaster than a Tudor. Very versatile, with the anti reflex domed sapphire and the date complication (apart from the GMT). I get somehow the feeling that with the Longines you can get more watch for the money. I feel however that among the honorable mentions you could include the Steinhart. Even if they make lots of Rolex homages, the substance is there. They make very sturdy watches and quite accurate too. They even have a model made of 904L steel and they even have a vintage GMT model where there is actually lumen on the numbers on the bezel! Keep up the good work!
Hi Teddy. Just wanted to thank you for this video, as this finalized my research and made me decide to pull the trigger on the Longines Spirit. I was able to purchase it just yesterday and I'm still in awe at the details in the design of this piece. Also, plus one on the previous comments on the screw down crown, have this on my 40mm. Great job on your videos!
Good comparison, but the criteria are not everyone's and in any case would not be equally weighted by everyone. I own and wear both the Ranger and the Titanium version of the Spirit (which is time-only, like the Ranger). Love and wear them both. They are both excellent, understated travel and GADA watches. The Ranger operates more like a starter Explorer I field watch, while the Spirit more like a starter IWC or Zenith Pilot aviation piece. The T-Fit on the Ranger alone justifies the price premium -- it is outstanding. But Longines wins on fit and finish with applied markers and a more refined dial and case. Will I keep them both? Probably not. Which one would I sell? The Tudor, but not with any pleasure -- so it isn't for sale yet.
I own watches from both brands. Love both. Tudor is more a rugged utilitarian look and longines has a bit more flare/pop. Just a matter of what you’re looking for. Also a point of order, the 40 spirit has a screw down crown so that point will vary depending on size chosen.
This is a difficult choice Teddy but ultimately I'd have to agree. Longines have certainly upped there game over the years with a lot of the brands movements all be it manufactures by ETA are exclusive to Longines from the Swatch group. The dial design is also quite incredible and oozes depth and class. I must confess to being a fan of the Tudor brand and without doubt the Ranger is a brilliant entry into the 'in house' chronometer options for the brand. I do agree that these two watches have slightly different target markets with the Ranger aiming at a easy readable more tool watch vibe with the Spirit looking at the more versatile end. The 37mm Spirit would probably take my cash out of the two but I think I would still yearn for the Ranger at some point. Right now I have the BB36 black dial (smile text as it has a 3rd party movement) that I'm more than happy with, small yet elegant but versatile as well not to mention easy servicing. I doubt I'll be looking to make another purchase of either of these options anytime soon.
I was looking for a watch to hold me over in the classic category until I get the Rolex explorer. Initially I took a hard look at the ranger but in the end that dial was too flat and plain, maybe if the numerals were raised and the text a bit different. I’d maybe buy the Tudor at $1k but not 3k. I got the blue 37 Longines and seeing it live the watch is even more beautiful and the size is probably the most perfect I have. The 37 does wear like a 38 for sure. For more versatility I’d recommend the black dial but the blue is way more beautiful. I tried on the 40mm spirit but the date window placement wasn’t great and the length of the lugs didn’t fit right and almost made the dial look oval. Highly recommend this piece, 6.75 in wrist here. I wound up at bucherer and tried the Rolex Explorer 39 vs 36. 36 felt tiny while 39 too big for that style watch. I was a bit surprised how much the spirit 37 is perfectly sized for the style.
My pick would be the ranger, I like the longines but if I had to go for a one watch collection the ranger would do it all for me. This hobby is also a preference and style, we each have our own. This hobby isn’t about telling the time cause our phones do just that. If I could though I’d have them both. The longines for a dressy type and the Tudor as an everyday all terrain
Great video! Ordered the Spirit 37 champagne a while ago. Delivery scheduled for next week. Happy to see I made the right choice ;-) Love Longines in general, no brand does better value. Already a long time owner of a Legend Diver no date - absolutely incredible watch. Expecting the Spirit to be at least as good.
Hi Teddy, thanks for the lovely video. First thing, Longines Spirit is a screw-in crown so for the water resistance it should be definitely a tie. So it should be 8 to 6 :). And for one of the comments i've seen, when you're stucked between a Longines and any other brand, like me nost of the people are going with Longines. Like i did for Nomos Club Campus 39 vs Longines Spirit 40, Longines Conquest vs ChrisWard, Legend Diver vs Ball Engineer etc. It somehow always catches on the last point and gets you. Hard to avoid that they are producing exceptional pieces within accessible price ranges.
Having held the Longines in his hands I think he would know, wouldn't he? It's been said by many people that.the 37mm Spirit does not have a screwable crown.
I think so much more work and taught went into making the Spirit. From the proportions to the overall finish and value proposition it is the better watch.
You can buy a decent used Omega at 3k which won’t depreciate much. Longines has little brand recognition in the U.S. and won’t retain very much of its original purchase price.
I had loved the spirit for so many months until I tried it on. It was just not right on my wrist and I was really bumped out. Fast forward 1 year, I got the ranger about 2 weeks ago, and so far I’m loving it. It is the perfect travel watch that is very lowkey, but the quality is up there
@@ipereira7 not so much on the lugs, but the dial size due to bezel-less case. I’d say if your wrist is smaller than 6.5, then it is too big. Unless you are used to wearing big watches. I personally only have 1 large watch which is the seamaster pro 300, the rest are between 36-38. So a big dial despite it being a 39 felt awkward at first for me. The bracelet has a nice taper is it quite nice
I recently bought Tudor Ranger. I must say that I was a skeptic until I saw it in person. I am very satisfied with it. However, I am a fan of more polished parts but I just wanted none polished good tool watch in my collection. Regarding the dial, I can understand the objection, but I can not understand how it is different in comparison to Panerai Luminor which is praised so much for a lot more money. No offense to all "Paneristi" that are watching the channel.
Man,, this would be a hard choice as I love them both. But if I go by my gut feeling, I lean towards the Longines Spirit. To me it looks like a more versatile design which can be worn with a suit and tie or with jeans and a polo shirt. I am particularly attracted to the dial design, which has depth as well as is available in some beautiful colors. The Tudor Ranger, as you said, has a flat dial and the case and bracelet are mainly brushed, so it has a more casual look to it, more like a fleiger watch design. But had you been comparing the Longines to a Tudor Black Bay, I don't think it would be a contest for me, the Black Bay would win. BTW, while watching this video, I'm wearing my Longines Flagship watch. Very dressy, it was my first introduction to Longines and hopefully not my last!
Great video and very useful as I'm looking for a watch in this 'area' . . . for me, the deciding factor is the overall look and I'm finding that I prefer the workmanlike simplicity and minimalism of the Ranger. I just wish I could find one on a bracelet here in Vancouver!
Great content Teddy! Just from my perspective, I would have loved to see Longines in black instead of white to give a more direct comparison to the black dial ranger. We did see a glimpse of black and blue versions, but it wasn't enough for me!
I was going to acquire the titanium Spirit which was about the same price. Having worn a Submariner for 16 years, once I tried on the Ranger with its similar bracelet it was hard to decide to go with the Spirit. It’s the ultimate for me in the field watch category. The simplicity to me is compelling. I also think investment-wise a better choice knowing the Rolex connection. The weight of the titanium Spirit was difficult to overlook.
Tudor has no value after it becomes a second hand. Perhaps it may have some value after 30 years. People are flipping the watch on different Facebook groups.
@@pokpongl no value? I dont think so. Look at the grey market. It holds its value very well unlike Longines. Longines is considered a better Swatch for a lot of people. Tudor instead is the next Rolex.
@@pokpongl you’re going to be very wrong in the future when these Rangers that are made so dam well and are actually subtly gorgeous absolutely put those Longines toys to shame on the long term value market….
@@isluderea8322 that is the funniest joke I heard for ages. Tudor can never get the same status as Rolex. Ask random people on the street and majority would have never heard of the brand.
Teddy, congratulations on the success of your channel! I've been out of the game for a couple years but started looking at watches again which led me back to your channel. Thats some serious channel growth in a couple years! I'm really liking the new Ranger. Will hopefully get to take a look at one this weekend. Take care.
For sure Logines has more fine details and for me a better size. If I have understood what Tudor does lately, it's almost certain that the Ranger will be released with a 37mm casing at some point
Literally just had this dilemma for the past couple of months and ordered the ranger last week! Can’t wait for it to arrive This will be my first luxury watch!!!!
Agree!!! I have the Dolce Vita in automatic. It's such a lovely watch. I own mostly sports/dive watches, but the Dolce Vita has gotten the most wrist time in the last 6 months.
I’ll offer that if you want to do these comparisons, then rather simply applying binary check marks, some sort of factor weighting would improve the quality of the recommendation (this is done in business and government regularly: essentials and desirables along with weight factor for desirables). Giving a check to an established watch when the other watch had its first model release only a few months ago is dubious as well. Better is the discussion following, where the potential buyers might choose one over the other. It would also be worth discussing your accuracy findings with the two watches as you do during your reviews, only to compare to the manufacturers’ stated goals. We know for example that Tudor’s expectations for their watches is far better than the COSC standard (apologies I don’t know Longines). It’s an interesting comparison because I would not intuitively cross shop these two brands; I perhaps wrongfully place TAG, Tissot and Longines together. Thank you for another great review Teddy.
I have the Spirit 37 (black on brown leather) and the bb36 (black with bracelet). The Spirit 37 wears bigger on the wrist, most probably because of the long-ish lug-to-lug length. I hate that it is not a screw-down case. On the other hand, The bb36 can be a 1 watch collection. I am eyeing on getting the Rolex Exp 1 36mm, but I noticed it wears bigger than the previous 36mm model as the case more "muscle" -- something I don't really like. On the odd side, the bracelet start at 19mm and tapers further down to 14mm. I have also been lusting after a IWC Le Petite Prince (a 36mm pilot watch) with the silver dial, but am wondering if it will be redundant with the Spirit 37 in my modest collection (same goes for getting the Explorer 1 and a bb36).
I think Teddy needs to add another category to his comparisons. Case back. Personally, I have no interest in spending thousands of dollars for a luxury watch if I can't look at the movement through a display case back. But even if you don't care about that, the case back is an opportunity to add visual excitement to a watch for esthetic pleasure. In many cases, it's just as important as the front of the dial. It's certainly as important as the buckle or whether the edges are polished. It's one of the first thing I look at when considering a watch.
I got the Longines Spirit 37 in black on a bracelet and im not going to lie, I sold almost my whole collection because every other watch went obsolete. Only piece I kept for work is my Junghans Max bill!
I have a Ranger with metal strap. Looks simple and non arrogant.
Longines has soooo much potential as a brand. After your video interviewing a longines representative I really believe the company is really dialing in its iconic watches and going to become a more common brand to see people wearing
I'm helping you in hoping so.
I think it will all depend on the way Swatch positions Longines, they should position it higher imo
Potential? They have history.
Agree to all but looks - to me it's stunning in its simplicity.
No one cares ‘cause it’s ugly and boring.
I bought mine because of Teddy’s video. Love the clean look of it I’ve got busy dial watches and this is a pleasant change.
I will never understand why Longines are not so popular in the USA! Excellent watches with history.
Swatch with there general lack of marketing more than likely. I defintly grew up seeing the longines watches in magazines along with rolex, tag heuer breitling, tissot but maybe since the days of the internet I see alot less manufacture direct maketing
@@boomdaus they're definitely a popular brand outside of the USA. I grew up in another country and Longines we're always considered as a luxury brand.
Very classy
Glad to see the 38mm Murph shoutout. Just picked one up from you guys and couldn't be happier.
Appreciate the support, my friend!
The Longines Spirit is just much more interesting than the Ranger. I feel like if the ranger had outlining on the indices or they were pure white instead of that strange green yellow color it’d look so much better! The ranger is just boring for the price and compared to the rest of the Tudor lineup.
I agree. That yellow looks like an unflushed bar toilet
The Longines Spirit is bought by people who cannot afford a Tudor Ranger.
@@rambosonix2514 your statement is a wildly ignorant😑 Tudor ranger still looks like shite in comparison. Also, a better statement is, the Ranger is for people who don’t/can’t afford an Explorer 1.
@@rambosonix2514 Short sighted comment. I can afford either but chose the Spirit….
@@rambosonix2514 lol. What a moronic comment
Thank you for sharing your insight as an owner. It greatly assists in the conversation here.
Hi, do you confirm that the Longines has also a screw down crown ? I guess there is a small mistake in the video.
I agree the nato makes it feel much more tool like
Great content, Teddy and team.
Personally I believe the choice is harder between the Black Bay 36 and the Longines as you mentioned. Great video!
As an owner of the BB36, it’s absolutely incredible.
I really like them both, but I pulled the trigger on the Ranger the week it came out. I just like the simple design and purpose built feel of a field/tool watch. It is the most comfortable watch in my collection hands down, and the bracelet is fantastic. If you want a watch that wears like a dream, I’d say go for the Ranger.
cool ..!
Longines all day every day in this case.
I will go for Longines Spirit no question. The dial design is elegant and there are simply so many varieties to choose from.
Just picked up the Tudor. Excellent watch. Accurate and comfortable.
I wasn't aware of this. Need to look into it. Thanks.
Both. If you can afford it.
Longines in blue on leather, and the Ranger on the bracelet. That blue dial on the Longines is fantastic.
Tudor’s crown, the overall feel, the bracelet, the quality is just beyond other watches around that same value.
Or instead of both, an Omega Aqua Terra?
I’d argue the quality feels more on the Longines.
I picked up the 42mm Spirit about a month ago. Absolutely love it!!!
I think Spirit Titanium 40 would've been a fairer comparison - it's more expensive, has no date, and is kinda similar in color theme.
I’d take a Formex essence 39 over a Longines Spirit…. I like the Spirit but it’s just not as Fire 🔥 as those new Formexs and costs significantly more…
@@briandorsey6437 Hey man, why not both? 😆 Have you seen the two new dial variants of the 39mm? Mother of pearl and like a wine red. Gorgeous. I'd get a Longines Spirit AND a Formex 39 hahaha
@@DingoEstrea96 lol I can’t argue with that! I’d actually love to have both. After I wrote that I was thinking maybe I’m being overly harsh on the Spirit 😎 and yup those are the two I’m deciding on or the green.
@@briandorsey6437 If I didn't already have a red dial watch, I'd get the Red Formex and the Blue Longines. Then to search for a nice green 😊
My vote for Ranger: history, very comfortable bracelet (for lovers), rugged universal rolex' explorer's' style. And yeah, Ranger is in my wishlist ;)
I have been contemplating both watches for around 6 months, I decided to go the Longines for the reasons you outlined.
Longines Spirit in black for me 😎 my first and only luxury watch and I still love it as much as the day I bought it. Granted, I got the 40mm before it was known they were coming out with a 37. 37 would be a better fit for my wrist, but I’ve already formed an emotional attachment to my 40 😂
also for me titanium 40mm spirit
I have the the exact same Longines Spirit.
It's been almost 3 months now and I can't start my day without putting it on.
Teddy this is brilliant! These watches are out of my price range but at least now I have some knowledge of the products. You have a brilliant way of putting everything on an even level. Your channel worked its way into my channels and I have you to thank that I take my watch collection seriously. Straight up! Teddy your channel is great!
I wasn't a fan of the Ranger until I saw it and tried it on in person. It's definitely worth a look if you like a tool watch.
I do own exactly that Spirit - very good watch. When seeing the Ranger I am thinking of the Explorer as aim for a better watch…
Get going 🚀
Cheers!
If the Ranger had raised markers and a smaller 36-37 mm case i would buy! The spirit is great, but my next watch is the Legend Diver
These comparisons are useful in that after you logically evaluate the various factors - you either find yourself relived the one you really wanted comes out on top, or disappointed that the one you liked comes in second. Then you follow your heart and toss that evaluation table away. 😀
Thank you for the videos Teddy!
Keep up the good work!
the Longines Spirit is it. Really a nice versatile allrounder, one of the best Longines models
The Ranger is nice, and I have a Tudor BB Chrono and love it, but between these two watches, I'd go with the Longines all day long.
I own neither but your thought process and comparisons match mine (by looking at them only) exactly.
Spirit is my everyday watch and always seems to match the situation.
Longines might be my favorite watch brand.
The Longines Lindbergh is my next purchase i think.
Perfect timing with this as I just bought a Ranger today
I own the black 40 Longines. It does have a screw down crown and lume is excellent. More refined and interesting dial too.
Yes... You're right. I just checked mine !
I own watches from both brands. Love both. Tudor is more a rugged utilitarian look and longines has a bit more flare/pop. Just a matter of what you’re looking for. Also a point of order, the 40 spirit has a screw down crown so that point will vary depending on size chosen.
balance bridge is all I need to sway me towards a watch. I do like both but the Ranger is superior as a long-term/permanent resident in a collection.
Love this style of content Teddy
Happy to see I made the right choice ;-)
Love Longines in general, no brand does better value.
@@jipke wow really? didnt know that😐
I think so much more work and taught went into making the Spirit.
It is the perfect travel watch that is very lowkey, but the quality is up there
Was the lugs too long. I have smaller wrists and feel like I may be the same.
Teddy start the new year off right with the watch collector's anthem.
I just purchased my Spirit in the champagne dial! First timepiece for me, and i was really influenced by you! Thank you Teddy!!
My Longines Spirit 41 has a screw down crown and is one of the reasons I choose it. It has been an awesome performer...
Tough call! Love the video Teddy.
Longines spirit everyday even without giving any points it is just a nicer looking watch
only teddy know what are the exact watches people wanna see put together in a video like this
Great breakdown Teddy once again very analytical.
@3:42 are the crowns that far out normally on the Longines? Or are the screw downs not closed?

Teddy, congratulations on the success of your channel! I've been out of the game for a couple years but started looking at watches again which led me back to your channel. Thats some serious channel growth in a couple years! I'm really liking the new Ranger. Will hopefully get to take a look at one this weekend. Take care.

Seems legit...
Great deal and a nice presentation 😊
Great watches. Both of them look robust. I like the way the second hands move in both watches.
For sure Logines has more fine details and for me a better size. If I have understood what Tudor does lately, it's almost certain that the Ranger will be released with a 37mm casing at some point
Literally just had this dilemma for the past couple of months and ordered the ranger last week! Can’t wait for it to arrive
This will be my first luxury watch!!!!
Same situation for me, went with the ranger as well!
I really love the Dolce Vita from Longines. Problem is, most of them Quartz. I already have a Quartz in the collection.
Agree!!! I have the Dolce Vita in automatic. It's such a lovely watch. I own mostly sports/dive watches, but the Dolce Vita has gotten the most wrist time in the last 6 months.
I own the Ranger and it's the right watch for me. But I think that anyone who prefers the Longines would by a real good watch too.
I’ve tried on the Ranger and really liked it, but I agree some raised indices on dial would be nice
Hey teddy thanks so much for my comment idea into a reality. Really appreciate it
I think Teddy needs to add another category to his comparisons.
