Robert Smith is a stunning guitar player, his masterful use of guitar effects gives more dimension and adds colour to his simple but stunning riffs. He's a genius!
This is an absolutely incredible song, my favorite band (Deftones) lead me here. Nice to hear the origin of their outstanding cover; The Cure influence on Deftones is crystal clear now and I wish to explore their music.
Huge Cure fan, and later in life a huge Deftones fan. Gotta love those long drawn out intros :D Deftones version of this song is awesome - Cure even in the crowd nodding away in the video :D
Beautiful, haunting & melancholic love song, the layers of guitar are mesmerising......always loved this song & this live performance is so soulful & atmospheric.
Kyle Brofloski shouted: Disintegration is the best album ever and I agree :) Talking seriously, I've been a fan since 1985 and after hearing my Disintegration LP (Vinyl) for the first time, I thought that I've heard their best work until then. That was my opinion in 1989 and remains until now. I love that compact wall of sounds from instruments that interact perfectly one with the other. It's perfect. Also I loved those uncommon drum patterns of Boris, not present in any other Cure drummer.
i was front row, swing tour '96 and i remember watching robert slide his pick up the neck of his guitar so ssslloowww, and my was jaw wide open, just mesmerized. it's almost hypnotic.
"If Only Tonight We Could Sleep" If only tonight we could sleep In a bed made of flowers If only tonight we could fall In a deathless spell If only tonight we could slide Into deep black water And breathe And breathe... Then an angel would come With burning eyes like stars And bury us deep In his velvet arms And the rain would cry As our faces slipped away And the rain would cry Don't let it end..
This kind of music sounds so versatile, you could stick it in so many genres of movies and videogames and stuff, and yeah, Smith is a great guitarist, although admittedly the first time i saw this song on tv i though it was an instrumental, like a bunch of other Cure songs.
Robert Smith is a great guitarist. Simon Gallup is a fantastic bass player also. You can see why the Cure were picked for "The Crow" music score.....Just class.
I thinkn only Radiohead can match this band for the level of emotional intensity they reach. I grew up with this band and have had so many moments of utter sublime sorrow and grief and love and joy listening to them. Robert Smith is a genius
If only tonight we could sleep in a bed made of flowers if only tonight we could fall in a deathless spell if only tonight we could slide into deep black water and breathe and breathe... Then an angel would come with burning eyes like stars and bury us deep in his velvet arms And the rain would cry as our faces slipped away and the rain would cry Don't let it end...
Absolutely awesome...has been one of my faves since I first heard it. Robert Smith is great on that guitar! Ive had the great luck to see them twice here in America. The slower songs like this & "Same Deep Water as You" put me in a trance! I love the Middle Eastern flair a lot of their songs have. They'll always b my favorite band!! Most people I know don't like them at all, saying Robert Smith can't sing but he's got the most hypnotic voice I've ever heard! GOREOUS!!

I love this video so much.... I keep going back to it. This is the best version of this song which is my favorite cure song. Thank you so much for sharing this.
Big Cure fan.....don't you fellow fans agree these chords were used by Clinton for the movie Brainscan featuring Edward Furlong? It's the main theme of that movie. Especially the timing of the last two notes of the first riff.
This is from a surreal world where the night always continues. High rise gothic buildings that lean in uniform. The windows from them look pale yellow. Clocktowers guide your way in the rainy nights. Dark churches comfort and intimidate you in this strange and eerie world. Do not disturb them, for they always see you. Sudden bells keep you in hyponosis in your walk. The streets are made of cobblestone and brick, many crossing ambigous arcs with vague quotes engraved. The temperature is mildly cold. Everyone passing by around you dresses in black. No one speaks to you, it is the hour where crime peaks. You notice shadows of trench coats, as if they almost had a soul themselves. You encounter a bridge, in which cats sing to the moon in divine ways. As you cross you see houses, their cone shaped tops wrap you in more uneasiness. Now approaching the park, medieval age castles in the middle of it beg to be seen again, they are alive once more. The neon lit alleys call to you, when you enter the room of your apartment, you only wish to return outside to the danger. The sensation of something more out there, an excitement in the darkness. You realize your wishes for a companion, except this solitary notion is likeable. The distant thought of being alone and the desirable idea of being with someone mixed together is addictive. A bottle is poured quickly for tension, then perhaps something stronger is taken. Are demons or saints guiding your feeling? It doesn't matter, they conquer your thought. You choose to romanticize, to give in to the voices of the atmosphere. You walk out again, the wind carries you to another stroll. Your senses have conquered you, the night has won. The slavery to it is nothing but euphoria. May this dream never end, may you savor the endless longing.
@simionTheOne Yes it was...but this was played after the bloodflowers set as an encore song along with the song "The Kiss", both from the 1987 kiss me kiss me kiss me album... great show
Oh I love this Song!!! And the most I love about it is the guitarr solo from robert!! he plays it with such a feeling...Man this guy is awsome!! It's a shame I never heard them live...Does anybody know if the will play again in germany??
@MarkusCallaway2006 and so humble about it too. I remember seeing him interviewed where he was saying he was a rubbish guitarist, compared to people like Johnny Marr. still gets the hairs on the back of my neck standing to attention all right. Especially in some of the 80s live versions of The Forest, where he just goes hell for leather
One of the most psychedelic song of the cure. I have seen it live millions of times. It is like floating on the waves of the ocean
Robert Smith is a stunning guitar player, his masterful use of guitar effects gives more dimension and adds colour to his simple but stunning riffs. He's a genius!
The opening guitar work on this song is beautifully haunting.
perhaps their most dreamy and atmospheric song...truly haunting and beautiful

Huge Cure fan, and later in life a huge Deftones fan. Gotta love those long drawn out intros :D Deftones version of this song is awesome - Cure even in the crowd nodding away in the video :D

Beautiful, haunting & melancholic love song, the layers of guitar are mesmerising......always loved this song & this live performance is so soulful & atmospheric.
I've seen them live twice in the 80's and 2 years ago, they're better now. Greatest live band ever!
I totaly agree with you! Their concerts are even better through years
Kyle Brofloski shouted: Disintegration is the best album ever and I agree :)

Спасибо за эту музыку и стихи, the Cure.
This is my favorite from the KM KM KM, record
anyone else find it amazing that robert smith is playing the robert smith signature guitar on this song?
i was front row, swing tour '96 and i remember watching robert slide his pick up the neck of his guitar so ssslloowww, and my was jaw wide open, just mesmerized. it's almost hypnotic.
Only the Cure can get away with these long intros! Amazing song!

new mexico 1987. that's the sound in my mind. arabesque, dreamy, magical...

Will always remind me of my love Shannon
0:56 😍 guitar
Absolutely hypnotic opening guitar solo. Still as solid a band now as when they first hit the scene....
If this was the last song they’d ever played it would be going out on one the highest of highs. Simply incredible
I thinkn only Radiohead can match this band for the level of emotional intensity they reach.
I grew up with this band and have had so many moments of utter sublime sorrow and grief and love and joy listening to them.
Robert Smith is a genius
Love this.
This is in my opinion the most beautiful of all The Cure's songs, sooooo dreamy & gorgeous
the cure is the best band i've ever heard
This guys are giants.
La sublime y dulce belleza de lo oscuro e impío... Hay canciones de #TheCure que podría escuchar toda la vida. Dormir con ellas, morir con ellas.

I love this video so much.... I keep going back to it. This is the best version of this song which is my favorite cure song. Thank you so much for sharing this.
