Re: checking roots and being root bound. I have a ZZ Raven that I brought home from it's normal home at the office. It wasn't looking happy, wasn't growing anymore. I put off pulling it out of the pot for quite a while. Needless to say, when I did finally tackle it...what a mess. Almost no soil left. (Really, where DOES it go?!) Totally root bound and crammed into a plastic pot that was literally about to burst. Had to cut the pot off the rootball. Wish I could post a pic. I'm new to your channel, and I can already say I am enjoying watching your videos. Not only you're very informative, but also very entertaining. Looking forward to learn more about Hoyas through your videos :)
I just used your pest spray on my petunia that was getting gnawed on by somebody. 2 green worm types fell off instantly! YAY!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge
In the Philippines, where H. obcura is native, this species has many variations, some which were ascended into their own species like H. marvinii, H. rosarioae, H. suda etc. The one you have, as I remember with its leaves and white or light yellow flower is H. unica, and is thought to be unscented. I believe the leaves of H. unica do not sunstressed or turned red. Good thing the one you have is slightly fragrant. Most of H. obscura varities (some are pink, some are yellow, some are orange and a combination of these three) are highly fragrant and are sweeter compared to H. lacunosa even to H. Rebecca. No wonder it attracted pollinators and with the passing of time evolves into many varieties.
Hi Dave, Many thanks for this video as well as your sense of humor! 🥰. I don’t own either of these Hoya but as usual, after seeing your video I want both. Such beauties. I am always amazed at the growth you get out of your Hoya in just a year. You do a great job with yours! Almost all of mine do the sleep, creep and leap thing. They look healthy and happy so I pretty much just enjoy caring for them and I get very excited when they give me blooms or have a growth spurt. 😊. Take care!👌🪴🥰
Thanks, Peggy! Good to hear from you. And yes, yes, I deserve ALL the credit 🤣😂🤣 I should definitely do a video of Hoya that have done jack squat. I'm looking at you, Patella....
I really enjoy your vids! I actually just asked the clone vs seed question today and you are mentioning it here in your video! I’m ~250 Hoyas in and learning so much from you… thank you!
Ok, Dave. I made up my mind! I want a Hoya Obscura! I don't like the H. Sunrise anymore. This is my 4th try. It's in a west facing window, good sun and as green as it was when I first received it close to a year now! Your Obscura is beautiful and won me over after putting it off for 5 years. The Penny's Treat I had at the beginning of collecting Hoya and wasn't familiar with the care so it died. It's also expensive now. That root bound mysinformation needs to die. I had the hardest time getting a large root bound Publicalyx out of a glass vase while ago. I almost had to crash the jar to get it out but poured water to soak the roots. And coco chunks and moss are the worse with the roots entangling in them. Sheesh, it's a lot to learn with Hoya type or any plant, substrate and watering. After almost 7 years I'm getting better understanding of hoyas! Thanks for sharing! Dee, NY
Hi, Dee! The H. obscure is a stone cold killer, right?? Even if the blooms didn't smell so very nice, this would be mandatory for the foliage. I'll be putting this permanently in the west window now that's it's all grown up 😁 There are a lot of myths that need to be busted, but "Hoya loved to be root bound" is pretty close to the top of my list 🤣😂🤣 Thanks SO much for your support of the channel !
Wow thats a huge plant! My collection got going just over a year ago so they are not that size. Alright if you dont mind please tell me about those pots you are using. I agree the terra cota dries out too fast especially in hot summer out doors in Florida. Plant therapy is better than drugs.
The salt clay pots work really well for me--they are somewhere between glazed ceramic and terracotta. I *must* consider how plants are going to do over long winters (our house get, and stays, quite cool). I grew up in Sarasota, so if I were still there, perhaps I'd be growing in plastic pots? I know I would be if they were outside. And yes, plants are magic. Cheers from Iowa 😀
I know you've lived in SC as well. I live on one of the Sea Islands so humidity is NOT a problem. Do you recommend that I switch to plastic pots? @@soberplantguy
I have a Rebecca living in my west window with beautiful red sunstressing. Question I got a brick of coco chips and a brick of coco cior. Do you moisten the bricks and expand them out and then let them dry out before mixing together and adding perlite?? I keep my mixture in a tote and wanted to make sure if you mix a batch at a time or a bigger batch. All of your hoyas are soooo big. I have to keep mine trimmed and give away cuttings to keep them manageable with my limited space. Have a great and blessed week fellow Iowan.
I'm glad you asked this--good reminder for me to add next time. I soak the chips and then leave them in a bucket to stay sort of moist. I find that they either need to start out moist, or the plant needs to be soaked initially so it doesn't dry out too quickly. Or, of course, watered more often at first. As for your plants, sounds like you have a very, very GOOD problem 😁
What are your thoughts on chopping 1/3 of the roots on extremely root bound plants? My itty-bitty crew of 8 hoyas are nowhere near having that kind of a problem but I've seen many videos advocating it. BTW, I have a Sunrise because of you. 😁 🇨🇦
YESSSSS on the 'Sunrise' !! I'm definitely pro chopping roots whenever it makes sense. In hindsight, that would have been a pretty good idea for the H. obscura 🤣😂🤣

I saw that- the great butter knife revolt! The reason I asked is because I read that some people think they have sunrise and it’s actually the obscura or vice versa. I have sunrise and I agree about the flowers. Sunrise smells better than lacunosa
@@margaretcalifano1617 Oh! Gotcha. Even if the 'Sunrise didn't have notably longer leaves, and less oval, the flowers 100% give it away. obscura are *much* smaller. Cheers to you, and to butter knives everywhere....
OMG, your challenges with the English language are as entertaining as the two Hoyas! 😂😂 I have a H. Sunrise and a H. Obscura which I acquired very recently. Looking forward to them growing like yours.
Hi Dave, just a quick question,I keep dealing with mealy bugs on my Hoya’s,is it due to overwatering or lack of air movement? I do overwater and there’s not much circulation indoors where I keep them. Sorry I know it’s hard for you to say without knowing my situation. Thanks in advance. 💚💚💚💚🪴🌿Natalie
Actually, this isn't difficult! Most Hoya growers deal with mealies at some point. I'm the same: air flow is ok in the house, better in *some* parts of the tent. Watering isn't a factor. So. It's an absolute fool's errand to try and remove them with alcohol and a q-tip. You'll miss the crawlers and never be rid of them. I just did a DIY pest treatment video that will eliminate ALL of them. And then I use it as a preventive year-round. Mostly in the growing season, usually a couple of times, or as needed, during the winter. You can spray straight alcohol if you want to go nuclear (Logee's nursery does this). As I've said, pests have been nearly a non-issue since I started using this formula. Cheers from Iowa, and good luck.
