To most Chinese, the Butterfly Lovers is a classic and most well known love story. Before this violin concerto was composed, there are already many interpretations ( through operas, dramas, music, dance, etc) of the touching story of the 梁山伯 and 祝英台. Hence, the composers who understood the deep emotions and psychic of the Chinese and its culture did an excellent job to bring the legend alive. Well, you may say that it’s 梁山伯 and 祝英台 who help to promote the popularity of the violin to the Chinese world 😀

    我是你的粉丝。你这段对于梁祝小提琴协奏曲的分析,我认为讲的非常好。特别适合生长在西方社会的华人小提琴琴童们。我们都是龙的传人,梁祝协奏曲是必学的保留曲目。

As someone who was born/raised in Hangzhou (where the school that Zhu Yingtai and Liangshan Bo allegedlly went to locates), this concerto has a special place in my heart. And ofc, I think it is fair to claim that if you are a violinist in China, people who are not well-versed in classical music tend to treat this piece as a standard to measure your skill. If you can play Liang Zhu, then they think you are good (and I think it's a reasonable judgement. This concerto is not easy in any means hahaha). Hope one day Kerson you can give us your full interpretation of this piece. The glimpses that you gave us in this video sounds so righteous (in a cultural sense) compared to many other violinists' interpretations and it is full of musicality and very alluring loll

Interesting! It's easy to forget sometimes just how many people live in China and that pieces or melodies you've never heard of in Europe for example can reach such a huge audience. Also thank you for adding subtitles!

All the meanings of the different slides and motifs remind me a bit of the baroque rhetorical figures in European music. Love the red shirt!

Kerson, thank you for this thoughtful video on this piece. I can't believe I had forgotten about the BL concerto. I am not Chinese, but I have had a long running interest in Chinese culture (I studied some Wu-Shu during part of college now more recently I have studied some basic Mandarin) and I think back around 2010 was when I was first exposed to this amazing piece from if memory serves, a live Chicago Symphony recording with Aina (SP?) Kavafian as soloist on NPR. This video has convinced me I want to finally learn it.

Thank you for this video! Your insights are amazing. This piece means a lot to me because as a Chinese Filipino, it represents a piece of my heritage, although here we're exposed to very little traditional Chinese culture and I've only just recently learned about this piece and the legend of 梁祝. I remember my interest in Chinese music started when I had the opportunity to learn a little bit of guzheng. Although I've always been into other kinds of music, there will always be a special place in my heart for classical and traditional Chinese music because of those experiences, and it's an absolute joy for me to learn more about the Butterfly Lovers concerto. I wish I could hear it performed live one day ❤
also, 4:25 I see what you did there 😂

Kerson, first, wow your mandarin is perfect! You obviously have great understanding of 梁祝。 超讚!
Although 梁祝 is based on 越劇/紹興戲,grew up in Shanghai one can hear various 越劇 coming out of people’s houses everywhere in Shanghai, as the city is full of people originally came from 浙江 area.
Also, it’s worth mentioning that 祝英台 came from a relative liberal-minded family because she was send to school to study with boys and men by hiding her female gender.
