Geoff arranged it with the guitar solo being done by the vocals, but then asked Layne if he could do it on the violin. He's been playing since he was 4 and is excellent.
I was mesmerized by this from the moment it came out on Patreon.
I sure do love surprises. They have surprised me each and every time I hear a song but Layne on the violin- did not have that on my bingo card, nope! ❤️
That blew my socks off! I think that this is the best VoicePlay that I have heard. Now I have to go listen to that at least five more times.

Yes! VioLayne, the super secret weapon VoicePlay has only unleashed three times in their 20+year career. Fun fact, he _can_ play and beatbox at the same time. But it's not easy and it looks kinda funny, so they decided to play his pre-recorded percussion in the background during the solo. That effortless catch from off-screen was the culmination of a very long string of attempts. Good thing that violin is neither expensive nor especially fragile 😆
Secret weapon for sure! That was amazing! I don't know much about the violin but I doubt it's a 'cheap' one. Although, maybe by violin standards (Stratovarius violins are millions of dollars. I know it's not one, but they are a pretty penny) but I hope there wasn't any big drops!
Thought they did an awesome job on this, and I saw Metallica perform this on the Black album tour. I had pretty much the same reaction as you, the first time I saw this, when the violin came flying in. But , it works, and works well.
Since you liked this, you are also going to like the VoicePlay cover of Aerosmith's "Dream On" feat Omar Cardona.

Layne was dubbed VioLayne when he hauled out his violin the first time and left us all on the floor screaming for more. It took 3 years before this one happened, and he brought it back. And yes, there is even a t-shirt that says VioLayne on the front, and "A Cappella, it's better with instruments" on the back. I have it. First fan t-shirt I'd bought in decades.

Eli's a rock god, but J. None brings the SOUL! The only complaint I have is that, I too, wish Cesar had a few more lines. But he's still very in it!

Nobody would have thought they could do Metallica, but they did.
Soon - probably this Friday - they’ll release another genre of rock that I’m sure no one even thought of. But it’s fun to see that people still underestimate them. That way they can still surprise!

Crazy thing is, I was so distracted by that violin being tossed in that I must have watched this video 10 times before I noticed the climactic high chord the boys do right before VioLayne starts the guitar solo.
I was confused at first- "There was a violin thrown in????" but then you mentioned VioLayne and now I get it! You're referring to VoicePlay's rendition of Nothing Else matters. Ok! Yes, I missed that too! 🤣🤘❤️

This was great! This song is one of those songs that will live forever. I love acapella groups such as Home Free and Pentatonix but I think that VoicePlay is the best. It think I feel this way because of Geoff's incredible vocal range.
I know a little from Pentatonix because I love their version of My Favorite Things. Other than that I don't know anything else. I've only heard of Home Free since covering VoicePlay but have never heard anything from them. These guys are amazing and yes, Geoff's vocals are unearthly! Besides, they all seem to be a good bunch of fellas. Thank you, Mossy!

About Cesar part: Note: this is my theory, it is not based of interview/discussion. Elis have alway been thr "rock guy" of the group, he was in a rock band before joining cosplay, have stroger presence in rock part, etc... a few month after this song, Elis directed VP adaptation of CREEP. Its is rare of him, but he start directing more. In CREEP Cesar was given the lead to the intro, the ending and a decent part of the song.
I believe "Nothing Else Matter" was really important for Elis on a personal level(i speculate). I believe Cesar offer to cut short his time in lead to give it to Elis for this song, as it mattered to him. As thanks, when making the artistic/musical choice for CREEP, Elis choosed to give Cesar more presence as acthank you for being so short-lead in Nothing Else Matter.
It is speculation, my personnal theory, but if you watch CREEP, I think you'll get what I mean.

To be honest, I'm not a Metallica fan. That being said, this is one of my favorite voiceplay songs. It's just so damn good. 😊💜💜
As a Metallica fan, I can say I'm not crazy about a lot of their stuff and I'll leave it at that. But this is such a great cover! Truly unique and that violin at the end was the big WOW! 💜❤️❤️
If you want to hear Cesar take that lead, see him and VP doing "I Can't Make You Love Me" (Bonnie Raitt) or "In the Air Tonight" (Phil Collins). Now you know why he is also called VioLayne (and the Carrot Lord).

@@BemusingBill It’s was a bit of silliness that turned into a long running inside joke at this point. This literally goes back years - it was an established thing when I discovered them the year before the pandemic.
As I understand it, Layne was goofing with a carrot at one point - pretending it was a cigar or something during lunch break when they were shooting - and cracked someone up hard.
Now It’s just…a thing. He has a carrot lapel pin on in “The Grinch”, he uses a carrot as a nose to make faces at DeeJay Young in “Butter”. His character tosses a carrot into the pot in “Hall Of The Mountain King”.
There are probably other examples (I feel the lapel pin may have been in another vid, but not sure), but that’s what came to mind.
