His solo work is second to none. He does it all.

    "He alone couldn't do it."
Pardon me while I dissolve in giggles. Geoff Castellucci, VoicePlay's bass singer, has got his own channel where he posts his own solo covers and let me tell you- the man is VoicePlay's gateway drug. He absolutely can do it all by himself- and frequently does. You've only heard the slimmest portion of his vocal range, and he can do things that will leave your jaw on the floor. Not only that, but he did the vocal arrangement for the piece you just watched, and he and his wife Kathy are usually the majority (if not the entirety) of the crew of any solo video he shoots. He and VoicePlay are both 100% independent artists, funded only by performances and Patreon, so everything you see and hear- from song selection to video production- is entirely their project and direct, hands-on creation.

And if you want to check his base, Voiceplay "Valhalla Calling", holding B0 for 15 seconds right from the start!!

The original group was called Four2Five, they sang together in high school choir, and they formed a group when they graduated back in 1997 or 98. The two founding members who are still with the group are Geoff (Jeff) Castellucci, the bass (the deep voice) and Layne Stein, the beatbox/violinist/baritone. Geoff and Layne have been doing almost all of the arrangements and videos, split about 50/50. Geoff did this one. They look at each performance as an art piece, and still managed to produce one a month for the last several years. Eli, the rock tenor, did used to front a Metallica cover band. His voice is amazingly flexible though, and he has incredible technical skill that goes far beyond a single genre. (Listen to their cover Tennessee Whiskey, and you'll see what I mean.Or at least - part of it.) All of them are monsters musically. Layne has been playing violin since he was four. What I love about them is that they bring that intense musicality to each performance without getting lost in it. Technique supports the song, as it should, instead of burying it.

VP is one of the oldest a cappella groups and they do their own thing (totally) independent - no label backing. So everything you heard and seen was done by them. They take turns to arrange songs - but as luck would have it, the base did arrange this one.
They took on the challenge and... won! They are awesome.

They did this last January during my birthday week. What a gift this was. Last year Chicago heard that VoicePlay did this, checked it out, invited them to their Chicago and Friends concert Nov 17-18. When Chicago's staging team came out, they asked where did they need to set up the drums - Eli (bald tenor) pointed at Layne the beatboxer and said that's it. Chicago's trumpet player was sitting next to Geoff (that very low bass) staring at him thinking how does he do that? The second guy singing is J None, used to be a member of VoicePlay but got recruited into the US Navy for his vocal talent. He's done nearly 3 yrs of a 5 yr sting. He spent the first couple of yrs out in Seattle but just was promoted to the premier Navy chorus in Washington DC. It makes it faster and easier to fly down to Orlando for some of the videos (like Valhalla Calling (Miracle of Sound), In the Air Tonight (Phil Collins), Hellfire (Hunchback of Notre Dame), Friends on the Other Side (Disney), Tennessee Whiskey (Chris Stapleton). Cesar is the newest member, taking up some of the slack from VoicePlay having one of the original members (Earl Elkins) leave after 23 yrs and J None being in the Navy. Check out Creep (RadioHead) where Cesar gets the first lead and this was one project that Eli did. I Can't Make You Love Me is one Cesar lobbied for and it is hauntingly beautiful. Their newest video is a gaming piece Sleeping in the Cold Below. I have subscribed in hopes that you will react to more of VoicePlay's work. They deliberately chose not to have contracts so that they get to decide the creativity - do it their way.

The deep bass guy and the beatboxer started singing together almost 30 years ago and Eli, the one in the middle joined them years ago. The feature, J None is the one you liked the best and he is a former member but now sings with the Navy band! These guys are amazing. You might like their covers of Dream On or Carry on Wayward Son. Also they have a very cool Viking cover, very manly. Valhalla Calling and a sea shanty, Hoist the Colours. I would love to see you react to more! 😅

The guy with the deep voice is Geoff Castellucci, and he is a bass singer. Voiceplay has covered pretty much every genre of music, and if you haven't already I HIGHLY recommend scrolling through their catalog and seeing what else you might be interested in! Geoff actually arranged this piece for them, and he has his own solo channel you might like to see at some point. Even if some of the music isn't your preferred style, you might be like me in that you learn SO MUCH about writing and arranging music just from posting close attention to some of the magic they can pull off! Thank you for sharing this reaction with us, and for being humble enough to admit you were wrong 😊

Geoff, the Bass singer, on his site does "manly man" songs. Folsom Prison, 16 Tons, Ain't No Sunshine, Big John, and Ghost Riders In The Sky, as well as others. He has a 5 Octave range and sings all the parts in them.

OK, so this is Voiceplay: Left to right, they are Geoff Castellucci, the bass (he can sing baritone as well but his low notes make him a bass). Geoff has his own channel where he does it all. J.None-he was the baritone for Voiceplay at one time, now he is in the Navy, singing bass for them, and we all hope he’ll come back when his time is up there. Eli (rhymes with Jelly) Jacobson, the tenor (formerly sang with a rock band so yeah, he can go full metal when called for). Next is Cesar de la Rosa-he didn’t get much solo time here but he’s incredible. Check out The Lion Sleeps Tonight. At the end you’ll hear a ridiculous high note-D6. That’s him. He’s theoretically the baritone for the group but he takes on a lot of high harmony. And finally, Layne Stein, the group’s beatboxer/vocal percussionist. He is also a baritone and sometimes sings and we all love it when he does. And yes, in three of their songs he has also played the violin (some say Vio-Layne) and we all love it. It makes this not 100% acapella but nobody cares at all.
Please do check out more by these guys. There’s a lot of high testosterone material. LOL. If you’re into games at all you might like their Halo Theme and/or Valhalla Calling (in both cases the songwriters have posted comments approving their versions), The Dragonborn Comes from Skyrim, and I know there are a few others. If you like classic rock, Carry On Wayward Son is incredible. You’ll find lots to like and there’s a lot to acapella beyond the nerdy stuff you probably saw years ago.
Great reaction. I’m glad they kind of won you over!

It's always fun to watch someone discover Voiceplay! They are absolutely top notch. Totally independent, no manager, no label. They have complete creative control and it shows. They are supported almost exclusively by patrons on Patreon. Pre-Covid they toured extensively. In fact they were on one of the cruise ships that sat off shore when it hit. Because of the lockdown, they focused exclusively on their UA-cam recordings. All but one is married, three have children and they have no desire to go on the road again.
Subscribed in anticipation of more Voiceplay and Geoff Castellucci!

  • @rhov-anion
    @rhov-anion 2 місяці тому +6

The guy with the soul voice is J.None. He currently sings with the US Navy, but used to be with VoicePlay. Since they weren't touring during Covid, he decided to follow his dream of service to our country, and he returns as a guest when on leave.
The fancy beard dude (Eli like jelly) who you say probably sings in a metal band actually did sing in a Metallica cover band. He's got that rock grit in his voice, and he's crazy good.
The angelic voice with the fluffy hair is Cesar, a new guy to the band who came in after they lost their high tenor named Earl in 2020, and then J went into the Navy. He's bringing in the youth, sass, and experimenting with social media more for this group of 40-year-olds.
The beatboxer/violinist Layne doesn't always pull out his instrument (they're acapella after all) but he's a wizard at sound effects, both drums and EDM noises. He also sings with the voice of a cherub, but he rarely gets a chance since he's busy laying down the tempo. He plays violin in their version of "Warriors" by Imagine Dragons... and he's GOOD.
Geoff ("Jeff") the Low Bass... he's a dragon. He's not human. The man sings 5 octaves, something only a few people in the world can do. (Fact: Axel Rose can sing 6 octaves, but he's also supernatural.) Geoff has a solo channel, playing piano, harmonizing with himself, sometimes using guitar, drums, and computer sound effects, all done by him and his wife. Definitely check out his "Sound of Silence." It's chilling!
Not bad for a bunch of choir nerds from Florida, right? It's a crime they're not on the radio, but they do get millions of views. Great review! I like that you're not afraid to be honest and check out something that "isn't your thing."

Ah, yes! I subscribed to your wife after her reaction to this! It was delightful! Welcome to the Voiceplay Rabbit Hole! Hold onto your hat! Geoff Castellucci, the long-haired bass, is one of a kind, and believe me, HE DOES IT! And yes, J. None, the African-American fellow is so good the US Naval Choir asked him to sing with them, but he comes back and sings with Voiceplay a lot. I posted some "rules" for them on your wife's channel, should you decide to keep diving, as well as some info about the group. I would recommend "Valhalla Calling," because not only is it my favorite VP song, it's about Vikings, and you can't get much more manly than that!

Eli didn't open with his strongest grittiest rock-tenor vocal, because he was leaving room for the intensity to build as the song progressed.
Geoff (the basso profondo) and Layne (who did vocal percussion in this one, and played the violin) sang together in high school choir, along with also Earl, a countertenor who was in the group until a couple of years ago. Eli (the bald rock tenor) wasn't quite original but joined fairly early, back when the group got its current name. J-None and Cesar joined more recently (and now J is listed as a featured guest, because his full-time job now is singing for the US Navy, so he's not in all of VoicePlay's songs any more, only the ones he has time for when he's on leave or whatever).

Yes, Eli (in the middle) does come from a metal background. The sound effects are called beatboxing, and Layne is considered a master of the craft as well as a classically trained violinist, a baritone singer and one of the group's arrangers. Geoff, the subterranean bass on the far left, is a founding member and put together this arrangement, and yeah, I think he tosses in some of those unexpected deep bass drops as a shout-out to the fans. I'm sorry to hear your wife gave you a hard time; keep writing, that's how you learn and improve!

Two of the original members are still in the group. The bass singer and the beat boxer who are at the two ends met in middle school and along with a third member who left the group in 2020 started singing together in high school. The bald tenor with the gritty voice also went to school in the area and competed against them.
They issued their first album under a different group name in 1997 right out of high school. So the reason they sound good is that they practice, practice, practice and have for years. Over time some have come and gone, but you will always see those three.
You asked if there was more at the end and in a way there is. They do a karaoke track which is all the backgrounds without the lead which is often a piece of music on its own. They make the karaoke track available to their patrons but they’ve also been using it in the outro lately which might help you understand the harmonies better because you’re not distracted by the lead.
I’m glad you watched it and I hope you do more. I don’t know what your typical genre is. They don’t normally do metal. But they have done Dream On, In the Air Tonight, Wayward Son, Seven Nation Army that you might like.
They also have done quite a few video game themes- HALO and Dragonborn/Skyrim are two favorites.
And I think you would really like Valhalla Calling. Eli (bald guy who did used to perform in rock bands) really rocks it and J (the Black guy who is technically a guest as he isn’t a regular member anymore as the Navy recruited him to sing for their elite vocal group) is in it as well and shows off a bit.

Welcome to your journey into the rabbit hole. I think you will enjoy it.
There is a debate among we VoicePlay listeners. It is whether Geoff the bass singer is part Titan or par Dragon. This is yet to be determined.
I had to chuckle when you commented about Eli's ( pronounced L E like jelly) voice. I thought " oh, will you surprised!".
They have quite a catalog that showcases everyone's talents.I know you won't be disappointed by your trip through that rabbit hole. I grew up in the 70s and 80s on Priest, Maiden, Zep, Sabbath and Purple. Actually have seen most of them live a few times and I love VoicePlay. I subbed to follow your journey.

Every one of these guys is incredible. None of them have a vocal lane. Geoff, the bass, usually gets all the attention first - great that you picked up on JNone's beautiful voice so fast. There are many of their songs you would probably like. Viking? Got it covered. Pirates? Ditto. Aerosmith, Kansas...pick a genre and you'll find something to like. (Your wife does reactions too? Going to check her out!) Edited: It's hilarious - I had already found her and subscribed

You need to hear them do Aerosmith’s Dream On. They hit that high note in three part harmony.
And White Stripe’s Seven National Army. Geoff actually sings deep there - this was more like lower middle range for him. He’s got more, lol.
I think you’d like Valhalla Calling and Hoist The Colors as well. The first was inspired by the video game Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and it’s a Viking battle song. Hoist The Colors is from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Vikings and Pirates. You’re not going to get much more manly than that!!
They also did Creep by Radiohead, and a melody of Queen songs called Queen In Five Minutes.
Layne, the beatboxer, does take a line now and again, but he’s usually too busy being a drum machine.

    Oh, ye of little faith...
This is a very rare appearance of an actual musical instrument. The beatboxer, Layne Stein, has only brought it out on rare occasions in the many years they have performed.
The bass singer, Geoff Castellucci, can also sing as high as any other Voiceplay member. He can cover five octaves, from the lowest keys of the piano to pretty far toward the other end.

  • @christinestromberg4057
    @christinestromberg4057 2 місяці тому +1

A capella really means unacompanied. And some do complain that this has a violin in it. It does, but only as a short solo. The singing is still unacompanied. VoicePlay is unlike any other a capella group, in their harmonies, their arrangements, the breadth of genres they cover. And their videos which are always amazing. And don't worry, I'll be just as honest about you as you are about the singing. I will pull no punches. The lowest male voice is a bass. I'm sure you know about bass guitars. Geoff is a bass, even a double bass at times, but also a tenor when he needs to be. The other sounds you hear are beatboxing, or vocal percussion. People who just laugh at what they don't understand are basically pretty stupid, and insecure. If you want to learn, listen. To your wife, to good singers, who do know what they're doing. And yes, Eli has fronted rock bands in the past. Try Dream On. I think you could call that manly. Being macho and unkind is NOT manly, it's just pathetic. Oh and there are other hyper-critical reactors out there. You're not the only one who says what he thinks.

You actually caught Eli (pronounced jelly without the j) early on, where you said you could tell he was not putting it all into it. J None, the really sleek guy who was second, is a part time member until he finishes his US Navy contract... and is good enough that he got pulled for the Navy Choir almost immediately... then we have Ceasar with the higher (tenor) voice, although he can swing down low when he needs. The beatboxer, Layne, only occasionally brings out the violin, but we loved seeing it here... and then, last but not least... the man in the basement. Geoff (pronounced simply Jeff) who actually was not pushing on this song because like you said, on a song like this you can go too low... and if there is a too low, he can hit it. I am looking forward to when you review their song "Valhalla Calling" from Assasins Creed... because it is the same five, but with a song they are not as restrained with. Geoff actually was mute for a couple days after, to give you some idea how interesting the song will be.

I tried listening to your reaction when first you released it...I became a bit irritated by some of your comments before you even heard them. So, I gave you a thumbs down about 30 seconds into your video. Tonight I decided to watch again. I am sorry I reacted so negatively. You actually did listen and change your mind, so I changed my negative to a positive. Pretty good reaction. Thank you.❤❤❤❤

Male voices are bass, baritone, and tenor. Geoff, the low voice here, is a bass. You are a baritone... as are over 80% of the male population on earth.

But Geoff can also sing tenor lol

And still thinks if himself as a Baritone with a base range

@@JillPeterson-dr6ox, and is completely wrong... was even called out on it by Peter Barber... who knows what makes a person a bass. Just the fact his voice dips to an A1 just speaking, that shows he is NOT a baritone, whatsoever. A baritone is well into vocal fry by E2; Geoff breathes deeper than an E2.
